Sometimes newer versions of programs can be found as backports. I've never had any luck finding them, however. I think these are versions that have been put in unstable or testing and someone kindly generates a .deb for the stable environment. See what you can find about backports. Jim.

You need to have the drivers for your card either in the kernel or in a module and load that module. I suggest you generate a custom kernel by installing the source and following the directions in the README. You will be able to configure it to support your network card specifically that way.
