Turns out IRQ 0 meant that the card wasn't actually getting an IRQ at all
(thanks to the ever fabulous rcw :). I set the BIOS to a non-PNP OS and
all is well. :)

OK, I figured out that the cause of my 'problem' is the Xaw3dg package
required by gv. I've read all the documentation regarding scrollbars and
even tried downloading the sources from ftp.x.org, but the directions
given in /usr/doc/Xaw3dg/scrollbars didn't work for me. It said

After a recent upgrade, all my scrollbars went from smooth, dark grey
ones, to clear ones with fuzzy edges. I searched the mailing list

I receive these errors during boot-up (I included the /dev/... entries to
let you know at what point in the boot process the errors come up):
Mounting local file systems ...

and said no to the cddb's and now it works

I bought a ASUS P55T2P4 recently and it came with Award BIOS v4.51, which
does allow booting off of SCSI devices (although I only have ide). You
might try going to Award's site and getting an upgrade.

Thanks for your reply. I'm currently working on the later version of GIMP
right now (i've found that it's quite involved. thankfully 'Che-Fox' is
gracious enough to help me with that) but I will try the lesstif for xtar.

I've made myself a member of audio in /etc/group. Also, do you have nas
installed? If so, it will automatically start an 'au' process at
boot-time. I just removed nas from /etc/init.d since i'd never used nas
anyway. Do a ps ax to see if there is an 'au' process running.

updated.

Are you by any chance using Debian 1.2? I had that, and it seemed to have
all sorts of problems with X libraries. I upgraded to 1.3 and everything
worked fine.
