initrd and kernel 2.4.17

2002-01-20 Thread Patrick Dahiroc
hi all

i'm in the process of upgrading my woody box to kernel
2.4.17. does 2.4.17 require initrd to boot-up? if so
aside from adding kernel support for ramdisk and
initrd what else should be done to create a new kernel
and how memory should i allocate, by default it is
4096?

is it really beneficial to boot through ramdisk and
could someone explain why? i've read initrd.txt in
the kernel-source directory and to me the benefit does
not seem that great.

removing directories in /usr/share/doc/

2002-01-19 Thread Patrick Dahiroc
is it completely safe to simply 'rm -rf' certain
directories in /usr/share/doc?

i've noticed that /usr/share/doc takes up the largest
disk space in my /usr partition and i hardly ever read
any doc in it, since i can almost always find the doc
somewhere in the net. and some packages even have the
same doc in different languages taking up even more
space. it would be nice if apt-get has an option to
not install files destined for /usr/share/doc/package.

 i.e. this
output from dpkg -l | grep doc :
   gnome-db-doc
   gnome-dev-doc
   gnome-doc-tools
   gnumeric-doc
   kernel-doc-2.2.20
   kernel-doc-2.4.17
   multi-gnome-terminal-doc

If you are using gnome, run gnome control center /

select icewm. If icewm is already the current

Or edit .xsession and make last line in the file

gdm uses scripts in /etc/gdm/Sessions. If you start
 Xsession or Debian
from gdm, ~/.xsession is used. You could start gnome
 by starting
Xsession and having exec gnome-session as last
 line in your .xsession
 file.

gnome defaults are in /etc/gnome and uses system
 default window manager
 specified in /etc/alternatives/x-window-manager.
 Your specific gnome
 window manager would be in
 ~/.gnome/wm-properties/Config.

chroot'd named dpkg-sources

2000-11-19 Thread Patrick Dahiroc
hi all

i just found that there was a new exploit for bind. i just also
finished reading Chroot-BIND HOWTO. this might be a good time to
apply what i've learned. i've already created my 'named' system user
acct with a /bin/false shell and /chroot/named home directory. i've
copied the contents of /etc/bind/* to /chroot/named/etc/bind, created
/chroot/named/dev/null and modified the syslogd init file.

now i'm ready to compile the bind source code, which i downloaded did
by doing 'apt-get source'. now i have a bind_*.dsc, bind_*.tar.gz,
bind_*.diff.gz, and a bind-* directory.

do i still have to run 'dpkg-source -x bind_*.dsc' or are the contents
of the bind-* directory the output of dpkg-source?

if i edit some of the file in the bind-* directory. is it ok for me to
run 'dpkg-buildpackage; dpkg --install *.deb'?

Additionally, the Intel support site offers the driver, and they say the
i810 driver also needs glibc2.1, presumably because they distribute it as a
binary file compiled for glibc2.1. But slink only has glibc2.0.

First question: Do I really need glibc2.1, or can I build XFree86 and the
driver with glibc2.0? I notice two different versions of the 3.3.6 binaries
for depending on which version of glibc. Unfortunately I didn't see the i810
driver in the binary directories, but I did find it in the Xfree86 sources.

For the best stability, would it be better to try to keep glibc 2.0 and
build the driver on slink, or would the best solution to be to upgrade to
potato, which has kernel 2.2 and glibc2.1, but is not the stable version and
just install the binary from Intel? No matter what I will have to upgrade
the kernel to 2.2 to run the agpgart kernel module.

 Thanks in advance.

You might want to set x-window-manager to a GNOME compliant

want to install xsm so then you can create a bazillion different X

correct me if i'm wrong - simply runs gdmchooser, gdmlogin, and
gnome-session or Xsession depending on which session i choose.
(gnome-session is called by the script /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome)

what i would like to know:
  1) how do i make scwm my default window manager?
in /etc/gnome/default.wm if have made WM=scwm, but everytime i
login in X i keep getting x-window-manager which is fvwm.

  2) can i continue to use /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome or do i have to
 switch to Xsession?

  3) anybody know how well gnome works with scwm?

to use Debian stable except for absolutely mission critical applications.
For exerything else, frozen is a great choice. (Put stable on your mars

So I'm writing to encourage people to upgrade to frozen, and if you can,

upgrade/install makes us that much more likely to release soon. So if
you upgrade or install frozen, post a report to the mailing list

The command is traceroute, in the package traceroute. Another utility of

Bag o' Questions

2000-05-06 Thread Patrick Dahiroc
hi

i have three question that you may be able to help me out.

1) I'm running gnome-terminal as my xterm. The title on the window simply says
'Terminal'. Is possible to have the window title dynamically change to the
current working directory. Kinda like the way emacs changes the window title
to the name of the current file.

2) (C/C++) I need to put ints, floats, and doubles in to char* arrays (weird
huh). Essentially what I would like the is to have the byte information stored
in a float (4bytes) and a char[4] (total 4bytes) to be identical. What's the
proper way to do this?

3) In zsh the is a command 'vared' that allow environment variables to be
edited on th fly. Is there a comparable command on bash?

Network Security / SRP

2000-02-26 Thread Patrick Dahiroc
hi all

i'm trying to make my system as secure as possible, in light of recent news of
networks getting broken. the first thing i did was to turn off services
spawned by the inet daemon that i don't use. currently the following are the
only ones running - i didn't turn them off since i don't know exactly what they
do:
discard
daytime
time
saft?? What is this used for? is this like ftp?
cvspserver ?? is this safe to turn off?

i dont quite know what discard, daytime, and time do is it safe to turn these
guys off? i run nntp - does nntp rely on daytime and time?

in general is it better to use tcpserver than the inet daemon. i run qmail
which uses tcpserver and i'm planning to have sshd be spawned by tcpserver.
i've read the tcpserver is better than inet - does anyone have any opinion on
this? are there any draw backs to removing the inet daemon completely? if i
can turn off the services i've listed above i would not have any use for inet.

has anyone have any experience with SRP - Secure Remote Password. is this
similar to ssh. i've also looked at FreeS/WAN and it looks like a very good
solution to network security. is anyone using this now and how is it working
for you? while reading about FreeS/WAN i also came across DNSSEC - DNS
Security - featured in Bind-8.2.2p5, which i am using. exactly what is this
feature and how do i take advantage of it?

No, the kernel will not automatically upgrade. This topic has been

Fixing Bad Blocks

1997-10-20 Thread PATRICK DAHIROC
Hi.

I recently posted a message about Kernel Panic that was due to bad
blocks in my hard drive. My plan is to just start all over. What I need
now is a way to fix bad blocks or to skip over them if neccessary. I
received a message that told me to use e2fsck -c /dev/hda? ( where ? is
any one of my 5 partions) to find the bad the bad block and then to use
badblocks to mark them. However when I did e2fsck -c /dev/hda? again it
still sees the bad blocks and I am afraid that this will still cause the
system to hang. I am thinking of reformatting and drive all over again.
Will this fix the problem? Does any body have any suggestions. Is there
any program that fixes badblocks?

Kernel Panic !!!!!

1997-10-18 Thread PATRICK DAHIROC
Hi

My Linux box had problems shutting down when I Ctrl-Alt-Del, so I can boot
up in Windows, and now Linux would not boot up. When I boot up, after the
message - Running /etc/init.d/boot - I get the error message

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest

hda: read-intr: error 0x49 {UncorrectableError}, LBAsect=1897876,

Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 03:02): ext2_read_inode:
unable to read i-node block - inode=21868, block=91022

Before all of this I was in root setting up my ppp connection to my
school. I don't think that writing my chat scripts could cause this
problems. I tried booting from a boot floopy hoping that I could use
fsck, but I still got error message above when I got to Running
/etc/init.d/boot.
Is this as serious as it looks? Do I have to reformat hda (root dir) all
over again and re-install the kernel? I'd really appreciate all the help
with this.

Thanks for Everything

Sound card PPP configuration

1997-08-07 Thread PATRICK DAHIROC
Hi

I'm trying to cojfigure my computer's sound card and internet connection
via PPP. As far as I can figure I have to recompile the whole kernel to
get the proper devices working. Currently the kernel I'm using is 2.29 is
worth it to upgrade to 2.30 (is there any big difference in stability and
performance)if so do i just run 'make xconfig'. If not how do I
recompile the kernel so that only the internet and sound card
configuration are affected. I have read the Sound HOWTO, PPP HOWTO and
Kernel HOWTO but I am still a little bit confused about the whole process
since the Sound and PPP HOWTOs assumes that things are already compiled.

Repartition Format

1997-07-29 Thread PATRICK DAHIROC
Hi

I've just finished repartition my hard drive using FIPS and have confirmed
that the partition was done, but the new partition doesn't seem to be

(a) - Format the new drive first in DOS then boot Linux from the
CD.
or
(b) - Format the new drive using the Linux fdisk, then boot Linux.

My new disk space for Linux is around 700MB could provide a nice way of
dividing this for Linux, (i.e how much do I reserve for root, swap disk (i
have 16MB RAM), usr, etc).

How do directly boot of the CD? From DOS or Win95?

Thanks

Install Instructions

1997-07-24 Thread PATRICK DAHIROC
Hi

I recently obtained a copy of Debian Linux 1.3.1 on a CD, however there
were no instructions accompanying it and I looked in the Debian website
for instructions for a CD installation. Could someone please send me some
instructions on how to begin the installation. Do I still need the floppy
rescue disks and images files?

Thanks for the help
Patrick

 Hi.

I am planning to obtain your official LINUX two CD Set. I have looked at
the installation page at your site and there was no instruction for a CD
installation. Could you please provide me a set of instruction of the CD
installation, the more detailed the better.

I also would like to be able to boot to Windows 95 if I need to - is this
possible with your LINUX distribution? If it is could also provide
 instruction for this.

I realize that I have to repartition my hard drive - 1.2GB. Is it
possible to repartition with out wiping out the files that are already
present? Could you also include specific instruction for a multiple
 partition, i.e. /usr.

Last thing, which kernel version is Debian 1.3 based on. Red Hat 4.2 uses
the modular 2.0.30 kennel, is the kernel in Debian 1.3 comparable to this
kernel. If not could you please list the major differences.

 Thanks
 Patrick
