weird su behavior

Hi, recently I've been having problems going into root... When I do a 'su' and type in the passwd, it kicks me out with a Broken pipe When this is happening, I also can't telnet into the machine; the telnet session gets closed. What could be causing this? Where could I look to diagnose the
