Help--language problem
Help. I can't change my keyboard in to from English to other language in Debian (slink) with Gnome. I need spanish as I write lots in that language. I go through all the correct steps going to panel , properties, etc and I have a nice old Spanish flag on the taskbar. But when I click on it, it stays with English. In fact, it does that with all languages. In Linux mandrake and Gnome, it's easy to set up and easy to use. I have the OReilly cd of slink, and I have had some peculiar problems with it..no session management, having to boot into Windowmaker to make it change to Enlightenment. Has anyone else had problems with the Oreilly product? adios, stevew Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
crashing and no intl keyboard
Need help. I have two bad problems on Slink: I can't make Debian type Spanish and many of my apps crash often. 1. I can't make the international keyboard work. I need to use Spanish markings but they don't work on my copy of Slink. I can change flags but I can't change the keyboard. I go to panel -- add applet--utility--GKB international keyboard. No luck. 2. Many application are crashing. GEdit, Bluefish, Balsa all crash regularly. What should I do? This is an amd k6-2 400 mhz, 128 ram. Also, I get no session management. thanks if you can help., STeve W Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
printcap problems, please help
I need a little help getting a printer working with Devian. On slink, I mistakenly erased my printcap while setting up an Epson Stylus 740. Because I also have Linux mandrake on the same computer with the same printer, I installed the mandrake printcap and then did /usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig --force to convert the printcap to Debian. But when I try to print something (e.g., lpr something?), the printer makes a noise and then stops. Enclosed is my printcap file. Can anyone tell me what I should change? Thanks in advance. colors change. help
I need help with a color problem. In slink, when I try to use any graphics program, the overall colors of desktop change. In xpaint or Moonlight Creator, gray areas turn to green or turquoise blue when I move the mouse from the menu to the drawing areas. Also, when I try to use AbiWord, I get a similar result: Colors changed all over the desktop to hot greens blues, pinks and reds. Any ideas anyone? This is an AMD k6-2 400 mmx, 128mb RAM. gdm.conf problem -- dumb newbie question
In slink in /etc/gdm, in gdm.conf, under the section DAEMON where it calls for USER and GROUP==I get the message that the Gnome Display manager can't find the USER. gdm.conf had USER=nobody, GROUP=daemon right out of the box. I want to change it so it doesn't conflict with xdm. So, what user do I put there for USER? Dumb question, but I don't know what to do. modem problem on slink
Suddenly, my modem is haywire on slink. Can anyone suggest a solution. It tries to log on to my isp but after a few minutes, a low flute sound replaces the modem sounds and then it shuts off. The log says the dial-in script failed. If I go over to Windows 98 on the same hard drive, the problem persists with the dial-up connection to the same ISP. After two or three attempts, the modem returns to normal. It doesn't exist to another ISP that I use only with Win98. It continues with Linux Mandrake which shares the modem and the isp but is on a different hard drive. The modem had worked fine until this started last night. The only change was that I had tried to set up HylaFax. I noticed that the Hylafax daemons started as I booted up. So I removed Hylafax, but the problem persists. Any ideas? This is slink and a USRobotics voice-fax modem. I am using a dial-up script that is the ppp script that came with RedHat 5.2. It works so well I just keep using it for everything. Wierd gnome!
My Gnome is wierd. Help! This is slink. X is 3.3.6. I log on with the graphics log-in screen. I get a minimal Gnome window. The configuration manager says enlightenment is the window manager. But to start enlightenment, I have to select icewm instead, then reselect enlightenment. Then and only then, enlightenment starts. Also, it seems to deteriorate over time. Also, there are few themes, only three. steve winston Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
need tutorials
Can anyone recommend tutorials on the following subjects (yes, I can use the search engines, too..but I am looking for something that has helped you): 1. using the conflict resolution portion of dselect. 2. replacing xdm with gdm. 3. getting netscape (I can't get all of it no matter what i do). I don't have any tech background, so there are holes in my knowledge when it comes to this stuff. I have gotten far enough to set up enlightenment and to tap into gnome thru enlightenment, but I want the gnome desktop and I don't know how to replace xdm with gdm. In fact, until yesterday, I thought gdm meant goddam millstone, etc. adios, steve Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.

X hell!!
Please give this newbie some advice. I have configured X to the point where I get an Enlightenment window including one open terminal window that gives me access to the command line. But I can't use any functions. When I try to open Eterm, Electric Eyes, GIMP, etc., I get messages saying they are not included in the /bin/bash path. I check echo $PATH naturally, but I don't understand what path the enlightenment stuff should go into. Also, when I try to go into GNOME, following instructions from the OReilly Debian book, I am told much of the stuff, gmc, panel, etc., don't exist. I try apt-get update or install or install --fix-missing with no luck or else to receive messages that 404 isn't found. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. lockfile--what is it?

Xwindow help needed
Xwindows still doesn't work. It won't install, and startx no longer exists. Somehow, I have Xfree86 3.3.6 instead of 3.3.5. I had to reinstall debian after win98 on the same disk crashed. Anyway, I reinstalled Debian (slink), did apt-get update and ended up with Xfree86 3.3.6 to my surprise. When i tried to install and configure, I got numerous error messages. Among these are: Cannot remove lockfile /var/run/update-menus.pid Errors encountered while processing xterm dpkg --configure returned error exit status 1 I have also gotten numerous error messages saying exit status 100. It did install correctly once, but I got only a gray screen that I shut down after a minute per instructions in the Oreilly debian book. X problems HELPPPP
I am having terrible troubles with X in Debian, and worse, I can't escape from the X server so that I can get into the command line and fix things. When I boot up, linux goes straight into a graphic log-in screen that is too large for my 17-inch monitor. When I log in, I get a blank, green screen with no icons. I try every possible combination of key strokes, but nothing happens although I can hear something going on my hard drive. When I try alt-control-backspace, nothing happens. I am forced to reboot. Since I can't get to the command line, I can't get into things and change whatever mess I have made. I configured Xfree86 for a voodoo3 2000 card. This is the the first time I tried setting up X in Debian. This is slink, the version that comes with the Oreilly book. Xwindow hassles, helphelp
I am having a terrible problem with Xwindows in Debian. Last night, I configured it for a voodoo3 card. Now, it boots straight to a graphic log-in screen and from that to a blank green win95color screen. THere are no icons. No combination of mouse key strokes makes any difference. Alt-ctl-backspace has no effect. It leaves me facing the blank screen. And everytime I try to send this message, this damned netscape crashes. So, this is the first try at setting up X in Debian. I am using slink that comes with the Oreilly book. It boots straight to the graphics log-in screen, so I can't get to a command line and fix my mess. Any suggestions? xfree86 woes. Help please
Helphelp, I am trying to install 3dfx Xfree86 drivers for my voodoo3 video card. I am running into a conflict between these drivers and the debian drivers.I am using Debian that Oreilly and Var are selling. 2.1.? Any ideas how to get around this. Details are below: I have successfully downloaded and installed Xfree86 3.3.5 from debian.org. Also, I have installed the RedHat package manager that works with alien. Now, I have 5 rpm packages of the 3dfx Xfree86 drivers to install. S: alien -i Xfree86~1.rpm (to take care of the first package) Installation starts but ends with following messages: Unpacking xfree86-SVGA (from Xfree86-svga-3.3.35-1.6_i386.deb) dpkg: error processing xfree86-svga_3.3.5-1.6.i386.deb (--install): trying to overwrite '/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA', which is also in package xserver-svga dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (broken pipe) Errors were encountered whil processing: xfree86-svga_3.3.5-1.6_i386.deb alien: error running: dpkg --no-force-overwrite -i xfree86 (and more stuff, but I got called away and didn't finish writing it all). Note: I had two install two Glide packages, also .rpm, that I used alien -i to install and it all went well and slick. connecting to internet
I am a newbie and have just installed Debian. I need to connect to a website to download an upgrade to xfree86. I put the url in my sources list, but when I try apt-update, the response I get is that the website doesn't exist. I have checked it and it exists. My ppp connection to my isp is working ok. but I can't get to the website. Lynx doesn't connect to anything although I have put a url in lynx.cfg. I have tried ncftp, but no hosts are recognized although I use them in with other distributions. Any recommendations? I am using Debian Gnu/linux that is publish by Oreilly. System is asus p5a mo-board, amd k6-2 400 cpu, 128 mb ram. debian shares a drive with win98. steve w Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
voodoo3 on debian
Has anyone successfully installed debian on a system that uses a 3dfx voodoo3 video card? I need help installing Debian on such a system. I am using the Debian that Oreilly is now selling, 2.2.1 or Slink, I think. I have installed Debian in a partition on a drive that also has win98. But I can't proceed until I install linux drivers from 3dfx's website. I have downloaded the drivers and I have installed the RedHat package manager for Debian as well as alien. But I am stumped because this Debian has Xfree86 3.3.2 while the 3dfx drivers require at least 3.3.3. Any recommendations? What should I do? This is a home-built computer with Asus 35A mother board, AMD k6-2 400, 128mb RAM, Voodoo3 2000 video card. Debian is on a WD caviar drive with win98. Linux mandrake is on another drive. I successfully installed the 3dfx drivers on mandrake, no sweat. thanks for any help, steve Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
newbie curious
I am going to install Debian Gnu-Linux (the version to come out bundled with an Oreilly text) on a hard drive that already has win98 on it. The same machine has linux mandrake 6.0 on a separate hard drive (the master drive on this computer), and it works super with linux mandrake. I have some questions: 1. If the computer works with linux mandrake, then am I safe to assume that everything will be compatible with Debian Gnu-linux? 2. Win98 occupies 5gb of a 10gb hard drive. The rest of the drive is not partitioned. I will stick the debian distribution there. Will the Debian lilo let me boot into Win98? Right now, linux mandrake recognizes the win98 partition on the slave drive, but when I try to boot into windows with lilo, win98 insists it sees a nonsystem disk in the a drive and refuses to boot up. So, I am using the BIOS to switch between the two hard drives. 3. Is there anything special I should know THAT ISN'T COVERED IN THE DOCUMENTATION before I start? Any advice some of you have to offer? adios, Steve W. = __ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com
