Good day from Singapore,

I have successfully installed Debian Linux 12.4.0 on my refurbished HP
EliteBook 840 G1 laptop on 21 Dec 2023 Thursday. It was done using Graphical
Install.

The installation started on 20 Dec 2023 Wednesday at 11.45 PM at night and
completed successfully on 21 Dec 2023 Thursday at 12.17 AM in the early
morning. I have taken about 32 minutes to complete the Graphical Installation
of Debian Linux 12.4.0.

I have taken 43 screenshots using my vivo V25 Pro 5G mobile phone during the
installation process and will be sharing them on my personal blogs in the
future.

Thank you for the Debian Linux.

Could not find interfaces configuration file /etc/network/interfaces in Debian Linux 11 (bullseye)

2023-12-07 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: Could not find interfaces configuration file /etc/network/interfaces
in Debian Linux 11 (bullseye)

Good day from Singapore,

Background Information
===

Initially our client has a UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM Pro) acting as a
firewall and router. Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM Pro was connected to the ONT.
Port 1 on the UDM Pro was connected to the LAN switch.

Then our client purchased Fortigate 80F firewall from us.

The date of the deployment of the Fortigate 80F firewall is 26 May 2023.

During the setup and installation, I had connected WAN1 on the Fortigate 80F
firewall to the ONT. Then I need to convert UDM Pro to non-routing mode. RJ45
cable to Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM Pro was removed. I proceeded to connect Port
1 on the UDM Pro to Port 1 on the Fortigate 80F firewall. As the Fortigate 80F
firewall already had DHCP server configured, I disabled the DHCP server inside
UDM Pro.

Everything (the network infrastructure) was working well for 6 months 11 days
until 6 Dec 2023.

Problem
=

On 6 Dec 2023, our client discovered that their UDM Pro could not perform
firmware updates automatically. Their UDM Pro was running UniFi OS version
3.0.20. Client wants to upgrade firmware to latest version 3.1.16 but couldn't.

UDM Pro runs Debian 11 (bullseye)

When I putty (SSH) into the UDM Pro machine, I executed the command "cat
/etc/os-release".

The output is:

PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="11"
VERSION="11 (bullseye)"
VERSION_CODENAME=bullseye
ID=debian
HOME_URL="https://www.debian.org/;
SUPPORT_URL="https://www.debian.org/support;
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.debian.org/;

The output of the "uname -a" command is:

Linux United-States-Space-Command-Secret-Server 4.19.152-ui-alpine #4.19.152
SMP Thu Apr 6 21:41:48 CST 2023 aarch64 GNU/Linux

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting date is 6 Dec 2023 Wednesday.

When I run "netstat -nr" or "route" commands in UDM Pro, the output shows that
the default gateway for the 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 destination is 192.168.2.2.
192.168.2.2 is the IP address of the Fortigate 80F firewall. This confirms that
the gateway was correctly configured on the UDM Pro. The LAN IP address of the
UDM Pro is 192.168.2.1.

The UDM Pro could reach the gateway 192.168.2.2, in this case the Fortigate 80F
firewall.

I could ping the gateway 192.168.2.2 from within the UDM Pro CLI.

However, I could not ping 1.2.3.4 or 8.8.8.8.

Even with the gateway correctly configured on the UDM Pro, it could not reach
the outside world.

When I run the command "ifconfig br0", the broadcast shows up as 0.0.0.0. I
thought this is wrong. So I ran the following Linux command to correct it.

# ifconfig br0 broadcast 192.168.2.255

But it did not solve the problem.

My colleague Henry Kissinger told me that Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM Pro must be
connected (seems like a design flaw). I had wanted to configure the network
interfaces using the /etc/network/interfaces file. But I could not find it
anywhere in the terminal in Debian 11. Where can I find this file in Debian 11?
It is missing!

I had no choice but to use the web UI of the UDM Pro to configure Port 9
(WAN1). I had asked the client to connect Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM Pro to Port
5 (LAN) on the Fortigate firewall. Then I configure Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM
Pro with the following network parameters:

Static IPv4 address: 192.168.2.254
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.2

After configuring Port 9 (WAN1) on the UDM Pro, I could ping 8.8.8.8 from
inside the UDM Pro already. However, I still could not ping www.google.com.
That means DNS name resolution has failed. I had to edit /etc/resolv.conf.

# vi /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 8.8.8.8

Now I could ping www.google.com from inside the UDM Pro. Name resolution is
working after I have modified the /etc/resolv.conf file by hand.

My client Edward Joseph Snowden then initiated the firmware upgrade using the
web UI. After the firmware upgrade, the UDM Pro rebooted. Yes, it did reboot. I
can confirm. The LCD screen on the UDM Pro shows that the firmware has been
successfully upgraded to version 3.1.16. We have the screenshots to show it.

Everything is working. All the UniFi wireless access points are working. All
the laptops and mobile phones have internet access. But another problem cropped
up. Now we could not access the web UI of the UDM Pro.

https://192.168.2.1 of the UDM Pro (LAN IP address) is now not accessible.
https://192.168.2.254 of the UDM Pro (Port 9 (WAN1)) is also not accessible.

We could not putty (ssh) into the UDM Pro too.

May I know what the problem could be? I think there's no choice now but to
factory reset the UDM Pro and restore configuration from the most recent
backup. Our client says their most recent backup

I can confirm that Fortigate firewalls are definitely based on Linux

2023-06-22 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: I can confirm that Fortigate firewalls are definitely based on Linux

Good day from Singapore,

These few days, I have discovered that the output of the Fortigate
firewall CLI command "diag hardware sysinfo cpu" is exactly the same
as the output of the command "cat /proc/cpuinfo" in Linux operating
systems. Hence I can confirm that the underlying operating system of
Fortigate firewalls is definitely Linux. But I do not know which Linux
distro Fortigate firewalls are based on.

Fortigate 90E firewall has 2-Core Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU  C2338  @
1.74GHz processor.

Fortigate 101F firewall has 8-core ARMv8 Processor rev 4 (v8l) 1400
MHz processor.

Fortigate 200F firewall has 8-core Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU D-1627 @
2.90GHz processor.

I will try to find out what processors my own personal Fortigate 60D
and Fortigate 60E firewalls have later on.

I have configured and deployed 22 Fortigate firewalls for 20
companies/organizations in Singapore so far (as of 22 June 2023
Thursday). On 15 June 2020, I joined my present company (Systems
Integrator/Managed Services) as an IT support engineer. I have been
working at my present company for slightly more than 3 years already.
My 3rd anniversary falls on 15 June 2023.

The following are useful commands for troubleshooting high CPU usage
on Fortigate firewalls (provided by Fortinet technical support).

get system status
get system performance status --run 5 times
diag hardware sysinfo cpu
diag sys top
diag debug crashlog read
execute tac report

Do you guys know which Linux distro Fortigate firewalls are based on?
I would like to know. This will be very interesting.

As you can see from the above certificate details, the Godaddy SSL

However, when we try to access https://cloudkey.teo-en-ming-corp.com:8443,
it says that SSL Protocol is not supported. Something like that. I can't
remember the exact error message.

I guess this happens because there is no UniFi Controller running at HTTPS
port 8443. Only the standalone UniFi Cloud Key UniFi OS is running at HTTPS
port 443.

Also, I guess that the correct/default location for the Java Keystore is
/usr/lib/unifi/data/keystore

It should not be located at /etc/ssl/private/unifi.keystore.jks

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

What is the best (and free) Linux softphone?

2021-05-05 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: What is the best (and free) Linux softphone?

Good day from Singapore,

I already have an Asterisk-based FreePBX VoIP IP PBX SIP server
virtual appliance (VirtualBox).

I do not want to spend so much money on buying physical IP phones.

Recently, I migrated my Fortigate 60D firewall, Huawei E3276s-920 4G
LTE USB modem, FreePBX virtual appliance (on laptop) and 1 unit of
Cisco 7960 IP phone from my home to the community hostel. I cannot
migrate too many hardware to the community hostel even though I have 4
Cisco 7960 IP phones.

As stated earlier, I do not want to spend so much money on buying
physical IP phones.

I am trying to save as much money as possible as I live in extreme
poverty in Singapore. My proposed solution is to install many Linux
virtual machines on my laptop. Each Linux virtual machine will have a
softphone.

So my ultimate question is: What is the best (and free) Linux
softphone available? Do I have many choices?

I am looking forward to your reply.

Thank you very much.

You may be better off using the debian package ddclient. It supports
no-ip.com.

2020-08-16 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: I discovered a bug in the no-ip dynamic dns free hostname auto
renewal/confirmation script written by loblab

Good day from Singapore,

Programming code troubleshooting person: Mr. Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En
Ming (Targeted Individual)

Country: Singapore
Date: 15 to 16 August 2020 Singapore Time (Saturday and Sunday)

My IT consulting company in Singapore asked me to install a Linux
virtual machine so that we can run no-ip dynamic dns free hostname auto
renewal/confirmation script written by loblab. I am an IT consultant in
Singapore, 42 years old as of 16 Aug 2020.

I am not a Python or Java programmer or software developer. The last
time I had formal training in structured C programming (not C++ objected
oriented programming) was more than 20 years ago at Singapore
Polytechnic (Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering course year 1995-1998).
Although I am not a programmer or software developer, I can still more
or less understand the flow of programming code.

I chose Debian 10.5 64-bit Linux to install as my virtual machine/guest
operating system because loblab mentioned that his scripts have been
tested on Debian 9.x/10.x. But first I have to install VMware
Workstation Pro 15.5.6 in my Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Linux desktop operating
system. The iso file I downloaded is debian-10.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso.

The virtual network adapter in my Debian 10.5 Linux virtual machine was
configured to use Network Address Translation (NAT). You can verify the
IP address of your VM with the following Linux commands:

$ ip a

$ ip route

Give your Debian 10.5 Linux VM at least 2 GB of RAM.

After installing Debian 10.5 Linux virtual machine (minimal installation
with SSH server and standard system utilities), I need to do a few more
things, as follows.

# apt install sudo

# usermod -aG sudo teo-en-ming

# groups teo-en-ming

So that I can sudo as a regular Linux user.

# apt install git

Then I downloaded the no-ip ddns free hostname auto renewal/confirmation
script using git clone.

Software: Script to auto renew/confirm noip.com free hosts
Download link: https://github.com/loblab/noip-renew
Programmer: loblab

I believe programmer loblab is based in China.

The version of the scripts I downloaded is 1.1 dated 18 May 2020.

The composition of the software is 58.4% Python programming language,
36% Linux shell scripts, and 5.6% Dockerfile.

I tried to run setup.sh Linux shell script and choose "Install/Repair
Script". But I found out that nothing is being installed in
/usr/local/bin after a few installation attempts.

I thought the scripts/installation were being blocked by AppArmor, so I
went to disable AppArmor using the following Linux commands.

$ sudo mkdir -p /etc/default/grub.d
$ echo 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
apparmor=0"' \

  | sudo tee /etc/default/grub.d/apparmor.cfg
$ sudo update-grub
$ sudo reboot

$ aa-enabled
$ sudo aa-status

But AppArmor is NOT the cause of the problem.

I began to examine the Python programming code and Linux shell scripts.

For the setup.sh script, when you choose "Install/Repair Script", it
will call the installer() function. Inside the installer() function, it
will call the following functions, in sequence:

config(), install(), deploy()

When the install() function was called, it tried to execute the
following Linux command:

$SUDO apt -y install chromium-browser # Update Chromium Browser or
script won't work.

Executing the above Linux command resulted in an ERROR because Debian
10.5 Linux does not have the chromium-browser software package. Instead
it has the chromium package.

When the above error is encountered, the installer script ABORTED
PREMATURELY and could not continue running. The installer script could
not run to completion. This is the bug.

To fix the bug, I have to COMMENT OUT/DISABLE the following line in
setup.sh script:

$SUDO apt -y install chromium-browser # Update Chromium Browser or
script won't work.

And add the following line below the above-mentioned line:

$SUDO apt -y install chromium

It fixed the bug. I ran setup.sh script again, choose "Install/Repair
Script", and the installer ran to completion. Finally the scripts are
installed in /usr/local/bin.

Please DO NOT add your no-ip account password to noip-renew.sh script
manually in plain text because it has to be Base64 encoded/encrypted. If
you add your no-ip account password directly to noip-renew.sh script,
you will get an "Incorrect Padding" Python programming base64 error
code.

You need to supply the no-ip account password when you run the installer
script. When the installer script calls the deploy() function, it will
also call the noip() function.

The noip() function is as follows:

function noip() {
echo "Enter your No-IP Account details..."
read -p 'Username: ' uservar
read -sp 'Password: ' passvar

passvar=`echo

Good evening from Singapore,

In Windows 10, it is possible to select multiple video files, right

If GNOME Files is lacking such a feature, can I request for it to be

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Not important, just about a bit of history about why ARMs didn't have
floating point hardware until recently.

If it was a new design, all ARMs would be armhf type.

What is the difference between armhf and arm64?

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/37790029/what-is-difference-between-arm64-and-armhf

The original 1988 ARM and many generations since did not have floating
point hardware. It's only when multiple cores became popular that it
became worth doing. Floating point hardware was always a separate core,
(the 80486 was an 80386 plus an 80387 in the same package) using
microprogramming to provide the functions. The RISC ARM doesn't do the
CISC/microprogram thing, so a single processor would spend the same
amount of time carrying out the calculations whether they were a formal
FP instruction set or not, and the whole point of the ARM is that it is
smaller and simpler than a CISC processor.

A bit difficult for me to understand :)

I booted in raspbian and debootstrapped debian armhf.
I did copy the boot and kernel from raspbian and it works fine.

I was going to do the same for amd64, but did not have the time. It
seems

then you need the kernel8

Something that does work, is using raspbian, and then using a debian
docker container. Not exactly where docker is made for, but it does
work

I would refer you to this page to get the latest status:
<https://wiki.debian.org/RaspberryPi>
For the Pi 4, it claims "There is no support for it in the Debian
kernels yet."

According to this blog
<https://david.wragg.org/blog/2020/01/installing-64-bit-debian-on-rpi.html>
It's possible if you use a kernel from outside Debian, provided by the
Raspberry Pi foundation. But I would suggest this was not a
beginner-level project.

Hi Alexander,

Basically personal data. I don't intend to access the data in the
Cloud often. Just want to park it permanently in the Cloud. Maybe I
can access the Cloud from anywhere in the world?

USD$1300 per month is more than half or 50% of the monthly salary of a
typical university graduate in Singapore. So I don't think I will be
able to afford to pay USD$1300 per month just for cloud storage alone.

Noted above sentence with thanks.

Please Recommend Affordable and Reliable Cloud Storage for 50 TB of Data

2019-02-14 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Hi,

Could you recommend affordable and reliable cloud storage for 50 TB of data?

Here are some important factors to consider:

1. Personal/non-commercial use.
2. Must be affordable, since I am unemployed most of the time and have
super low levels of income for the past 12 years since I graduated
from the National University of Singapore in 2007.
3. Cloud storage provider must not be a fly-by-night company, that is,
it will not suddenly close down the next day.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Good afternoon from Singapore,

What are the differences between systemd and non-systemd Linux distros?

Is systemd implemented in all the latest Linux distros?

Please advise. Thank you.

Good afternoon from Singapore, I came across this Linux Journal article titled
"DIY: Build a Custom Minimal Linux Distribution from Source", written by Petros

 Are the instructions in this article meant to be executed with ease on Debian
9.5.0 or perhaps easier on other Linux distros? Please advise. Thank you.

Which is better? Microsoft Exchange 2016 or Linux-based SMTP Servers?

2018-07-18 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Good evening from Singapore,

I am torn between deploying Microsoft Exchange 2016 and Linux-based
SMTP servers like sendmail, postfix, qmail and exim.

Relative ease of installation and configuration is an important
consideration factor.

Microsoft Exchange 2016, Domain Controller, and Active Directory are
relatively easy to install and configure. Linux-based SMTP servers are
extremely difficult to install and configure and of course, extremely
time-consuming.

One of the features of Microsoft Exchange 2016 is that you can create
additional folders on your Inbox in the server (server-side). Can
Linux-based SMTP servers do that?

Does Exchange 2016 offer more user-friendly features or Linux-based
SMTP servers?

Besides the above considerations, how about security? Traditionally,
Linux is far more secure than Windows.

Judging by security, Linux-based SMTP servers ought to have a higher percentage
of the market share?

Finally, I can only use Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation Copy FREE for a
period of 3 years MAXIMUM. But I can use Linux servers and Mail Transport
Agents (MTA) FREE perpetually.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

What is the universal (world wide) understanding behind degaussing harddisks?

2018-04-02 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Good evening from Singapore!

The foremost question which I want to ask is, what is the universal
(world wide) understanding behind degaussing hard drives?

I work for No Secrets Agency (NSA) Pte Ltd (fictitious company name
used). My sales manager Edward Joseph Snowden (fictitious individual
name used) had *promised* our customer Leave Me in the Lurch (S) Pte
Ltd (fictitious company name used) that we would "DEGAUSS" their hard
disks after the PC replacement and data migration exercise for 15
trillion PCs (fictitious number used).

PC = Personal Computer, which includes desktops and laptops

Last Friday, I had already reflected to my sales manager Edward
Snowden that since we are definitely NOT going to wipe our customer's
data by using strong and powerful magnets (physical means), should I
send an email to the IT Administrator of our customer Lady Gaga
(fictitious individual name used) asking her which data sanitization
method (by software means) I should use? My sales manager Edward
Snowden had quickly deflected my concerns (that is, wanting to send an
email to our customer Lady Gaga asking her which data sanitization
method I should use).

I had brought up to the sales manager Edward Snowden a number of data
wiping methods by software means last Friday.

(1) Very very simple 1-pass data wiping, quickest

a. Using "sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda", overwriting harddisks
from beginning to end with zeroes, where /dev/sda refers to the 500 GB
harddisk, not /dev/loop0 and not /dev/sdb which refers to the bootable
live operating system on thumb drive

b. Using "sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda", overwriting harddisks
from beginning to end with random data, where /dev/sda refers to the
500 GB harddisk, not /dev/loop0 and not /dev/sdb which refers to the
bootable live operating system on thumb drive

Any bootable Live CD/DVD/flash media could do it.

(2) 3-pass U.S. Government/Department of Defense (DoD) standard (DoD 5220.22-M)

Certified commercial software required

(3) 7-pass U.S. Government/Department of Defense (DoD) standard (DoD 5220.22-M)

Certified commercial software required

(4) 35-pass Gutmann method, slowest

Certified commercial software required

All these was last Friday. In the midst of our argument over the
cellular network "just now", my sales manager Edward Snowden tried to
cover up himself by suddenly and unexpectedly making an excuse that he
had told me last Friday I was supposed to wipe user data only, not the
operating system!

If he had wanted me to wipe user data and retain/keep the Windows
operating system, he should simply have told me to Reset the PC (for
Windows 10 only) or use a =secure File Shredder=! For Windows 7, you
can still wipe user data and preserve the operating system by using
the Recovery Partition. On Lenovo desktops, press and hold F11 when
Windows 7 is starting and reset to factory defaults.

I had advised my sales manager Edward Snowden not to use BIG WORDS
like "degaussing the harddisk" and market to the customer using these
big words. Any person who sees the word "degauss" would have
understood it to mean sanitize *ALL* data on the harddisk straight
away and without question.

Please refer to Figure 1. Exhibit A below for the "degaussing"
instructions communicated to me by my sales manager Edward Snowden.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

[LEARNING OUTCOME] Wi-Fi WPA Hacking Tool is Totally Useless on New Wireless Routers

2018-03-19 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Hi,

I am sharing my learning outcomes.

Recently I downloaded Kali Linux 64-bit Version 2018.1 and ran it on
my HP laptop with the integrated Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260
Wireless Network Card.

I wanted to test if I could hack the Wi-Fi WPA password on Ruckus R700
Access Point (AP) and the Aztech DSL8900GR(AC) Wireless Router. So I
started using the Reaver WPA cracking tool.

I understand that the Reaver tool works because there is a bug with
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).

I have no luck with Reaver on the Ruckus R700 Access Point. After
running Reaver, I found out that WPS is permanently disabled on the
Ruckus R700 AP with no option to turn it back on at all. Hence It is
not possible to hack the WPA password on Ruckus R700 AP.

Understanding that I couldn't do anything further with Ruckus R700 AP,
I proceeded to test Reaver on the Aztech DSL8900GR(AC) wireless
router. In this case, I also found out that WPS is disabled by default
on the Aztech wireless router. Reaver will not be useful at all if WPS
is disabled. But there is an option to enable WPS. So I enabled WPS in
the Aztech wireless router configuration page. And continued testing
with Reaver. But because Aztech wireless router has the rate limiting
security feature, brute force password attacks will be very slow and
probably take forever. The rate limiting security feature on the
Aztech wireless router is meant to slow you down when you are brute
forcing the WPS pin.

So here is my conclusion: Reaver Wi-Fi WPA hacking tool is totally
useless on new wireless routers which have the WPS disabled or have
implemented a fix for the WPS bug. Are there any other WPA cracking
tools which I can use in my educational learning journey? Please
advise.
