I seem to recall that there *is* a way to do step-wise upgrades of
such old systems, i.e. upgrading from oldoldoldoldstable to
oldoldoldstable, then to oldoldstable, then to oldstable, then to
stable. However, I'm stumped as to how to actually get started on
 doing that.

The last few steps of this are straightforward; oldoldstable is
still available in the repos, as far as I'm aware. The first ones
are more of a problem; if I understand matters correctly, anything
prior to oldoldstable is removed from the live repos, although its
.deb files are still maintained on e.g. snapshot.debian.org. (Which
doesn't really suffice for the equivalent of a dist-upgrade,
because you'd have to manually download all the correct .debs by
hand and then install them with dpkg.)

Is there in fact a way to manage the first steps of this stepwise
upgrade, from one aged-out-of-the-repos release to another?

If so, any pointers to information on how to go about it?

I assume you meant to say none have 3D capability.

When GNOME 3 first came out, it had a fallback mode for systems without
3D graphics acceleration capability. Fallback mode was essentially the
GNOME 2 interface. I continued to use GNOME 3 in fallback mode for a
while. Changing desktops is a lot of work, and I'm lazy. But eventually,
GNOME 3 eliminated fallback mode. At that point, GNOME 3 became totally
unusable for me. I have at least two systems without 3D graphics
capability: one desktop and one laptop. I'm not sure about the others.
Anyway, elimination of fallback mode from GNOME 3 forced the issue.
I had to switch to something else. I did some research, and discovered
that XFCE was a popular desktop with a GNOME2-like interface and
was designed to accommodate applications written for GNOME. I thought it
would be a relatively smooth transition for me. So I tried it. I've never
 looked back.

XFCE is my standard desktop now. When doing new installs on new
machines, I install XFCE as the desktop by selecting it as the desktop
of choice in the Debian installer. If I were to start over from scratch
today, I might try LXDE. But I'm happy with XFCE, and I see no compelling
reason to change at this point.

Maybe it would be worth having a look at ubuntu-mate.org, downloading
the iso image, and running it as a live disk.

what other steps should I take to move on from where I left of?

 Hello,

I am in testing, and I have a radeom 4000 graphic card. I used to use
the radeon driver but I had to switch after kernel 3.10, because I
got GUI freeze of 20 to 30 s avery 15 to 20 minutes, making it
 unusable.

But now I see that fglrx-legacy is not compatible with the new
xorg. Is there a hope to get a new version, or should I use something
else than debian (changing hardware is not possible that's my work PC,
and if it does not work, use the corporate windows image).

your problem could be similar to my X300 radeon on T43

what i did:

1- install xserver-xorg-video-ati libgl1-mesa-glx firmware-linux-nonfree
2- remove xserver-xorg-video-radeon

if i remember it correctly, i also had to replace gnome 3 with mate
for a smoother desktop experience

YMMV

After that I do need to build latest xorg-radeon or just install

Just use the kernel 3.10 backport for Wheezy, already packaged in the
wheezy-backports suite. It is not what I use, but it should work just fine.

Instead I tried kernel 3.10 on Jessie, except for occasional black
screen, which I have have press Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Ctrl+Al+F8. On Wheezy
with its default kernel, open source radeon driver, mesa-utils and
firmware-linux-nonfree, this would cause laptop to freeze.

Yes, mine works just fine, but it has an Intel IPW2915 wireless module and
an ATI Radeon X300. It is a model 2687 T43/p.

However, I do use a custom Linux 3.9.8 kernel, and the open X.org GPU
drivers for the Radeon X300. The ATI-radeon-based T43 are known to work
just fine with the latest 3.4 and 3.9 kernels, it has been a very long while
since I last tried any kernel from the 3.2 series.

how's 3D acceleration? on wheezy radeon keeps restarting until my
laptop hangs, removing radeon x11 is the only way, leaving no 3D

Make sure you update your ThinkPad to its latest BIOS and EC firmware if you
 haven't done so already.

BIOS being used is from latest version

Today I tried upgrading from squeeze to wheezy. I followed the instructions
 here:
 http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-upgrade-debian-squeeze-to-wheezy

When I did the dist-upgrade, after it downloaded several hundred files, it
 gave me this error message:

E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'libgstreamer0.10-0'. Please
 see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2)

I am stuck. Although others have experienced this problem, there are few
solutions. The solutions I found did not work.

I would be grateful for any suggestions on how to proceed.

The question is: what kind of hardware do you have? How strong? How
 many ram, etch...

2012-11-19 Thread Umarzuki Mochlis
2012/11/19 Mark Allums m...@allums.com:
 Hello,

Is there anyone having luck with skype 4.1 in debian ?
I have tried to install it and get the following dependency issue and
also lost my working skype 4.0

 dpkg: error processing skype (--install):
  dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
 Processing triggers for desktop-file-utils ...
 Errors were encountered while processing:
  skype

Any link to download the 4.0 version ?

If you are running 64-bit, you will need to install some 32-bit libraries.
The issue many people are having with Skype on Debian is the multiarch
transition. I think Skype/Microsoft has made changes with 4.1 that address
some multiarch issues while creating others. If this is the case , 4.0 may
not want to install properly, either.

Are you running Squeeze, Wheezy, or sid?

 Try this:

 #dpkg --add-architectecture i386
 #apt-get update

Then try installing 4.1 package again. As I said, you may need to add some
 32-bit libraries.

last time I tried, I need to have libqt4-gui ia32-libs-gtk

Re: how do i disable auto-connect to wireless network on wheezy?

2012-11-13 Thread Umarzuki Mochlis
2012/11/12 Selim T. Erdogan se...@alumni.cs.utexas.edu:

I'm assuming that you mean: in wheezy gnome-shell's wireless icon on the
tab doesn't give you the same setup options that squeeze's gnome 2 did.

One possibility is to choose Gnome Classic mode when you log in to
gnome. This will give you something that looks like gnome 2 and you can
get the old setup options. After you configure not to auto-connect to a
particular network, if you want to use gnome shell again, you can log
out and log back in with that choice.

Thanks. That solved it.

i checked with .ogg .avi but none can show video, except audio
strangely enough, streaming ogg via iceweasel works (built-in HTML5

already tried with smplayer VLC but the same

Streaming could be done from a flash player object or using the
video tag of HTML5, only the code of the page you rendered can tell.

More strange is that VLC fails to display the video because this fact
will discard a missing plugin problem. Can you launch the video file from
VLC using the command line? You can Use the debug parameter to get more
info (vlc -vvv myfile.ogg). Also, check for the current video output
under your preferences, it should be set to X11.

Do commercial/self-made DVDs play fine or fail in the same way?

What ffmpeg package do you have installed? Debian's stock or the one from

i think its from official repo

Yes, they come from the official repo, otherwise there will be a -bpo in
the package's name (in addition, those packages are not available at
D-M). Anyway, I don't think this is a plugin issue because if so, VLC
would have no problem for getting video and also, an ogg video file
 wouldn't experience this.

Mmm... Sandy Bridge uses to have dual VGA chipsets but anyway, vdpau is
not nvidia specific. Do you have libvdpau1 installed? BTW, Google says
that libvdpau_nvidia.so warning can be harmless.

could it be a problem with the video driver?
the built-in webcam that comes with this laptop (lenovo v470) also
cannot show any video from Cheese

The problem with webcam can be of a different nature, you will have to
ensure your device is supported and modules are properly loaded. Also,
you can try to get video from a different application such as Ekiga.

it seems that graphic module from backports isn't working well
when i switched to 2.6.32-5-amd64, video runs fine

Yes. Your public and private ssh keys should be in ~/.ssh
Your gpg keys should be in ~/.gnupg

As long as you copy these two folders to your new debian installation,
 everything should be alright.

If you are using gnome, you might also want to copy seahorse keyrings
(in ./gnome2 last time I checked, but that might have changed).

To sum up, if you copy your whole user directory to a new installation,
everything should be right where you left them.

I'm not sure what protocol is ym, but in case you cannot connect to it
with SSL, you could enable encryption in Pidgin.

 # aptitude install pidgin-otr pidgin-openpgp

and then enable them in Pidgin plugins menu and you should be able to

I think that OTR is more popular than PGP with IM encryption.

Not a recommendation but a list of available tools for your review:

 http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_%26_LDAP#GUI_Tools

Mmm, at Debian standard repositories I can see luma, jxplorer,
ldaptor-webui and gosa, not sure if any of these would be of your

I, being a java-lover (I specially like java for small applications that
can be put in portable USB flash keys and used in multiple operating

Uh? Yes, you should can :-?

How did you setup the samba share local folder? IIRC, you have to use
cifs (mount -t cifs ...). Once you have check the manual mount point is
nicely done and works as you want you can add the samba share to your
/ etc/fstab so it gets mounted on every boot.

maybe it cannot be used because i use nautilus to mount the samba share
 folder instead of command line?

To use Areca Backup I recall that you needed a samba volume mounted
locally, yes. If Nautilus is accesing the share via smb:// the trick
does not work (in fact, that's one of the reasons I stopped using Areca's
 solution :-) )

do you have any suggestion for open source backup software that can
backup to samba do block level backup while the source is still
running?

preferrably would be able to run on linux and windows client

round-robin mx and nginx proxy

2012-06-21 Thread Umarzuki Mochlis
I need general help on a multi-server setup with

2 MTAs (each also a nginx reverse-proxy)
2 mailbox servers (round-robin)

when i check nginx.log on both MTA, only the second MTA got https
connection (zimbra support also confirmed this) and it seems that this
might caused by DNS setup or related network configuration

how do I pinpoint as to where the root cause might be?

If you only get the same output each time, then it's down to the sending
MTA to pick an appropriate MX from the list. I assume both your MXs have
the same priority; in that case the sending SMTP should pick one at
random and, if that fails, try the other. Note here, that if you're
using round-robin AND same-priority MXs, both are picking the order at
 random.
thanks,

i also need to know how I would be able to investigate the flow of
emails. What I had tried so far:

dig +short mx reveals that from outside, users would hit barracuda MTA first
then barracuda would forward (or so i thought) to a MailScanner
(barracuda's outbound smtp host setting)

but how do I check that MailScanner (installed on top of centos 5)
forwards emails to those 2 MTA+proxy servers?

email system is working at the moment, fortunately.

mail flow that i assumed from outside:
user - barracuda - mailscanner - second zimbra MTA+proxy server -
one of two mailbox servers (via its public name)

thanks

my method of creating a ext3 logical volume is

Yes. A so-called live CD, or more precisely, a live system, is a
complete system prepared for a CD, DVD, USB key or other medium.
_*You*_ do not need to install anything on the hard drive. Instead
you boot from the CD or other medium and _*are able to start working

  medium.

sir, you probably had a bad day and mistakenly downloaded the lxde (for its

as everyone suggested, use the gnome version instead which can be get from
