However, I'm stumped as to how to actually get started on doing that. The last few steps of this are straightforward; oldoldstable is still available in the repos, as far as I'm aware. The first ones are more of a problem; if I understand matters correctly, anything prior to oldoldstable is removed from the live repos, although its .deb files are still maintained on e.g. snapshot.debian.org. When GNOME 3 first came out, it had a fallback mode for systems without 3D graphics acceleration capability. Fallback mode was essentially the GNOME 2 interface. I continued to use GNOME 3 in fallback mode for a while. Changing desktops is a lot of work, and I'm lazy. But eventually, GNOME 3 eliminated fallback mode. At that point, GNOME 3 became totally unusable for me. I have at least two systems without 3D graphics capability: one desktop and one laptop. I'm not sure about the others. Anyway, elimination of fallback mode from GNOME 3 forced the issue. I had to switch to something else. I did some research, and discovered that XFCE was a popular desktop with a GNOME2-like interface and was designed to accommodate applications written for GNOME. I thought it would be a relatively smooth transition for me. So I tried it. I've never looked back. XFCE is my standard desktop now. When doing new installs on new machines, I install XFCE as the desktop by selecting it as the desktop of choice in the Debian installer. If I were to start over from scratch today, I might try LXDE. But I'm happy with XFCE, and I see no compelling reason to change at this point. Maybe it would be worth having a look at ubuntu-mate.org, downloading the iso image, and running it as a live disk. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .. 2012/11/12 Selim T. One possibility is to choose Gnome Classic mode when you log in to gnome. This will give you something that looks like gnome 2 and you can get the old setup options. More strange is that VLC fails to display the video because this fact will discard a missing plugin problem. Can you launch the video file from VLC using the command line? You can Use the debug parameter to get more info (vlc -vvv myfile.ogg). Also, check for the current video output under your preferences, it should be set to X11. Yes. Your public and private ssh keys should be in ~/.ssh Your gpg keys should be in ~/.gnupg As long as you copy these two folders to your new debian installation, everything should be alright. If you are using gnome, you might also want to copy seahorse keyrings (in ./gnome2 last time I checked, but that might have changed). To sum up, if you copy your whole user directory to a new installation, everything should be right where you left them. thanks for the confirmation -- Regards, Umarzuki Mochlis http://debmal.my -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Yes. A so-called live CD, or more precisely, a live system, is a complete system prepared for a CD, DVD, USB key or other medium. _*You*_ do not need to install anything on the hard drive.
