I have done some more tests. When upgrading linux-base the pointer is
still visible.
It doesn't matter using the touchpad or a mouse connected by USB. The
point is, that the pointer is not visible. But by moving the mouse you
can trigger the mouse over events of buttons, when klicking

Yes, I think that is exactly the problem I have. Thanks. And sorry, but
I didn't found that bugreport...

Looks as if downgrading the kernel (as you did) is a workaround for the time
being.
That is the same thing I have here. Including the video playback described in:

Do I need to build from source at kernel.org or can I use apt?

First of all, please do not top-post.
If you installed Debian from a CD, there may be a back-level copy of
the package file (.deb file) on the CD

Yes Chen, that is correct. Either Suspending or Hibernating followed by
the wake-up results in the mouse pointer
after build a vanilla 2.6.38 kernel, the mouse pointer is finally back.
It has to be a kernel problem.

That seems to be your problem, gpm is not installed.
As I do not use gnome this may not be required but the only way I can
get a mouse to work is by installing the gpm package
I think you are correct Chen. On the following thread they found it to be the
kernel too:

@Wayne I apologize for sending the extra mail directly to you. At the time,
my mouse pointer was not showing up and I was having great difficulty
maneuvering through my mail. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

I've always used gpm and didn't realize that KDE/Gnome don't. :-(

Strictly speaking, the mouse support is in the X server itself and
not in any desktop environment that may run

I rebooted after the upgrade. Ever since then I have had no mouse pointer.
Changing the themes has no effect. I am using GNOME
