Gimp file formats?

The save as option on my Gimp only offers its internal (.xcf) format instead of stuff like .gif. What'm I missing here? Layers can only be saved in gimps own format. So you have to flatten an image first, before you can save it as GIF. Also if it has more than 8-bit colors, it can't be saved
