Hi there,
I've uploaded gnapster 1.5.0 to sid. Many bugfixes and UI improvements.
I've also made builds for potato, available at
http://people.debian.org/~madhack/gnapster-potato. Aptable:
deb http://people.debian.org/~madhack/gnapster-potato/ ./
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~madhack
Hey people. So I pointed my source.list at the red-carpet site for gnome
1.4, did an update and installed gnapster.
The following extra packages will be installed:
libgdk-pixbuf2
The following NEW packages will be installed:
gnapster libgdk-pixbuf2
No errors in the install, and yet
Hi all,
I've gotten a few comments, emails, and even a bug report about the gnapster
packages in potato. Specifically, 1.3-5 doesn't support connections to the
official servers (not that they're terribly useful anymore), and in general
just kinda sucks. But, just kinda sucking doesn't really make

Some days ago a friend of mine had the same problem, not being

time, with the same username. But it does make sense, because

i must confess I just managed to get my sound card
to work. I was wondering how to subscribe to napsterI am guessing
because of the legal case against napster that one can not
subscribe? I notice that newsgroups have a lot of files...
any advice on how to find interesting sounds/music etc.
etc.
I wasn't aware that they weren't accepting new accounts and/or users.
What happens the first time you run gnapster ?? It should ask for your
username and password. You may have to check the console tab for
messages. Also, unlike the real napster, gnapster allows you to change
your name/password

When I start gnapster, there is a message Finding best server ...

netstat shows that it has sent a syn out and is listening. I know it's
not an isp problem because I can use napster from Win98. I have this

So we are now agreed that gnapster bit it, yes?
Can someone who has just been through this post a brief
summary of the procedure for replacing gnapster (notably, what
to replace it with). I tried knapster a while back but I never
managed to install the right libs for it (I'm not running kde

The latest gnapster (1.3.12-helix1) from spidermonkey.helixcode.com

working?

Another alternative is to grab knapster.rpm, convert it to a
deb package via alien. I did this months ago because I
never could get gnapster to work.
I've never had problems with knapster.

legal problems? or is it my system?
Here's what I've changed since the last time

It's probably a gnapster issue then..

Except that I rebooted into *shudder* windoze to see if the
official napster client was still working, and it was. I rebooted into
Linux and gnapster was having the same problems. Maybe part of napster is
shut down and I got lucky in windoze? Don't know...
It'd be cool to continue
I just checked on the official napster website and it says the system is
up and functioning.. but it's not working on my system, does anyone else
have it working?

I've found that gnome-napster works perfectly whereas gnapster stays
disconnected. However, gnome-napster has few less features, but at least
its a temporary answer.

It's buggy, you can only share mp3's, I often try to download a few
songs only to get error so I can only assume that their database isn't
kept updated very often at all. I can only compare it to gnutella under
linux, which is also buggy but I like how it's distributed and not
limited to mp3
I had trouble downloading with gnapster too, so I switched to
knapster, which I found more reliable.

Out of curiousity, what don't you like about napster?
One thing that strikes me as potentially lame is that you can only
upload my files while I'm running the client..but I guess that's the
windows way (howbout a napsterd with sophisticated access control
etc.?) Napster struck me as
