Re: gdm3 greeter banner question

Brian,

I did a search as you suggested and came up with a lot of other people
experiencing and discussing the same issue. I tracked it down to a bug that had
been filed a little over 3 years ago, with gdm3 which was introduced some time
between 3.4 and 3.14. Eventually they made a patch for it (version 3.15 of gdm3
- and that was over a year ago) but that patch has not since been included in
any stable release of debian nor any official debian repo, and it does not
appear that the 3.15 package is available for jessie, even as a standalone (see
pkgs.org).

Apparently, debian Sid (unstable release) includes gdm3 version 3.22, but no
word yet on the release date of the next stable version (Stretch) of debian
after that :(

Don't know why it took them so long to include this gdm3 patch..

Unfortunately for me, upgrading to an unstable release, org-wide, is not an
option.

Searching the list archive for "Changing background for GDM3" could get
you something. Does it?

To change the background, see the "Theming options" section in
/etc/gdm3/greeter.dconf-defaults. There is also a "Show a login welcome
message" section in that file, but I've never used it.
