[Bug 281314] [NEW] Keyboard and Mouse not recognized on GDM login screen (but can ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a terminal)

2008-10-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I need help further diagnosing it, but today (Friday October 10th) I
installed the mornings updates to interpid, and upon rebooting GDM login
screen will not recognize (zero response) my keyboard (both external and
built in on my laptop) or mouse (both external and trackpad).

I can however use ctrl+alt+f1 to get to a terminal and interact with the

I've also double checked to see if there are any more updates that might
fix this problem, and apt-get upgrade doesn't give any result.

Re: [Bug 280646] Re: ACPI brightness events no longer work on ThinkPad T61

2008-10-10 Thread Marc Jauvin
Hi Matt, since I did this upgrade, keyboard and mouse don't work after
I rebooted... not sure if this is caused by your updated package (or
one of their dependency like xinput).

I'm currently writing this from Hardy since my Intrepid install is
unusable... ;)

Matt Zimmerman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

There is a package in my PPA with this patch:

 https://edge.launchpad.net/~mdz/+archive

 deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mdz/ubuntu intrepid main

I haven't been able to test it on the T61 yet, but would appreciate
 regression testing nonetheless.

Status in “gnome-power-manager” source package in Ubuntu: Triaged
Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

 Problem:
The state of the numlock key affects how the brightness switching
keys work. The OCD display does not display. On some systems (e.g.
Thinkpad 61's), it also prevents brightness from changing. This
seems to be a new behavior in Intrepid, and not reproducible on Hardy

A further issue on Thinkpad T61's is that the numlock key does not
signal toggle off properly. This can be seen in xkbwatch, which
shows that some modifiers are not getting turned off when numlock is
 toggled off.

 Original Report:
 [regression from 8.04]

I'm not sure about the root cause of this yet, but starting here.

Pressing the brightness up/down keys on my ThinkPad T61 no longer
changes the brightness of the LCD backlight. This worked fine in
8.04, and at some point in Intrepid as well.

When I press the brightness-up key, I see two ACPI events:
 video LCD0 0086
 ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 501

 brightness-down is similar:
 video LCD0 0087
 ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 501

In xev, I see KeyPress and KeyRelease events forXF86MonBrightnessUp
 and XF86MonBrightnessDown, respectively.

However, the backlight is not actually changed, and
gnome-power-manager does not display the brightness level OSD (both
 of which worked in 8.04)

 WORKAROUND: gconftool-2 --set --type bool
 /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-perseus/0/numlock_on false

[Bug 279800] Re: GStreamer update (7-Oct-2008, Intrepid) causes Banshee crash

2008-10-10 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Alright, well, this isn't going to yield as much information as you'd
like, I'm afraid. I have the debugger attached to the process at the
moment, and am attaching the debug session. However, when I did p
gst_object_get_name(0x169ee30) (0x169ee30 being the pad number this
time around) after the SIGABRT, I was greeted with:

==
(gdb) p gst_object_get_name(0x169ee30)
[Thread 0x43abf950 (LWP 8863) exited]

==

Banshee was responsive again, tried to activate a new song, and that of
course failed.

I gave a SIGINT, and got:

==
[Thread 0x43abf950 (LWP 9304) exited]
^C
Program received signal SIGINT, Interrupt.
[Switching to Thread 0x7f99deb98710 (LWP 8581)]
0x7f99ddeb0b04 in __lll_lock_wait () from /lib/libpthread.so.0
The program being debugged was signaled while in a function called from GDB.
GDB remains in the frame where the signal was received.
To change this behavior use set unwindonsignal on
Evaluation of the expression containing the function (gst_object_get_name) will
be abandoned.
==

Alright, so I tried to continue a few times, failing of course. So, I
did another backtrace and found out that gst_object_get_parent(...) was
calling for a mutex, and hanging on attempting to get it. I don't know
how to work around that.

I'll leave the debugger active for now... Any advice on how to proceed
from here? The entire debugging session so far is attached.

[Bug 260252] Re: When the display reoslution falls to 640x480 the Monitor Resolution Settings cannot be used to restore a higher resolution

2008-10-10 Thread JAdshead
This highly frustrating problem is equally present on Ubuntu 8.10
Intrepid.

Can a general solution be found - such as whenever the height of a window
exceeds the height of the screen, automatically present a scrollbar to enable
accessing the bottom part of the window?
(same thing applies for the width)

Nb. the command line workaround that got me out of this trap was:
  xrandr -s 800x600

(another related Bug #8629)?

[Bug 263211] Re: apps-wont-open-due-to-maximum-clients-reached-error

2008-10-10 Thread Scott James Remnant
A little digging gives the following:

libgnome-desktop/gnome-bg.c - both the gnome_bg_create_pixmap() and
make_root_pixmap() function it calls are largely unchanged since this
code was added - however that was only in November 2007 - previously
libegg was used

The change to use this function seems to have landed in gnome-
screensaver in rev 1434, which is since hardy - however this isn't
exactly a one line change! :-(

Add support for showing the desktop background behind the

pull in libbackground as an svn:external.
Still to-do:
1. add bg_preferences_load_defaults to pull from
system defaults instead of user settings
2. process bg changes
3. fix clearing child windows to the pixmap

[Bug 271894] Re: Evolution hangs after resuming from suspend

2008-10-10 Thread Christian Doczkal
I have the same/a similar problem on current Ubuntu 8.04. Evolution
hangs reproducibly when trying to close the program after a
suspend/resume cycle. I remember older versions of evolution hanging on
every sort of network anomaly. So it looks like there is some check for
error condititions missing.

There ssems to be a connection to:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=551788

Their bottom line is:

In addition choosing File-Quit does nothing until it finally quits
 evolution about 10 minutes later.
Disconnect from the network in nm-applet and reconnect fixes this for me, but
it's annoying.
---

So it appears to be improper handling of changing networks/invalid
sockets when doing suspend.

Re: [Bug 191027] Re: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument

2008-10-10 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Apport is now telling me gnome-login-sound has crashed; eventhough I heard
it play without problems. When apport is turned off, this message will go
away I presume, but it makes me feel funny.

Isn't there a better way than to configure things so that a race-condition
is _unlikely_?
Perhaps there is a solution that makes a race condition theoretically
impossible? Like launching pulseaudio after the login-sound .. or having
pulse-audio launch the login-sound ..

I know upstart doesn't do user-space; but it surely sounds like what we
really need is some event-based scheduling system here.

Works for me now in Intrepid after todays update

[Bug 250085] Re: exporting to flickr halts and never completes

2008-10-10 Thread dierre
It happens with all the filed I've tried to upload so far. I'm sure of
having experienced the problem when asking f-spot to resize the image
before exporting it to flickr but if I remember correctly the problem
stays even if no image resizing is required.

Attached is an example of a picture that I tried to upload and the log I
got with the command line you suggested. In the log, please note that
the last entries appeared after I clicked to interrupt the transfer that
was stuck...

I haven't had occasion yet to test under f-spot.

Thanks.

[Bug 280122] [NEW] [hardy] blank screen on user logout when 2 sessions running

2008-10-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu Hardy 8.10 all updates as of 08 Oct 2008.

This seems to have been a problem in previous released, but it has
regressed into hardy.

Steps to reproduce:

1 Login 2 Desktop user accounts

2 Switch from one to the other

3 Logout

This results in a blank screen where you cannot log back into the other
session

This is meant to just logout the 1 user and continue with the other with
the login box.

Could this be a gnome-screensaver or gdm bug?

[Bug 274630] Re: GDM crashes after restart

2008-10-10 Thread Chris
Ok, this isn't very useful.. but here is the information I collected:

I Ctrl-Alt-F2'd into a terminal to stop it crashing on boot. Then I re-
started the gdm. The system locked up again, but I was able to gain ssh
access for about 20 seconds before it because unresponsive. There was
no message in the syslog and no message in messages past the initial
boot messages. I know this because I appended them with a mark before
restarting the gdm.

What can I try now to sort this? Is there any way that the gdm theme
might be causing it maybe?

[Bug 281403] [NEW] Sessions not saved in Sessions Preferences

2008-10-10 Thread chrisisbd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Selecting Automatically remember running applications when logging out

[Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed

2008-10-10 Thread PardusLynx
Sorry about putting so many messages in a row but this is a major
problem for me and I'm sure for many people out there while trying to
find an alternative OS at work. It has been really so many months since
this bug was announced by users but I see no progress about a solution.
A new ubuntu release is on the way but it is about to be released with
this bug too. With this bug it is impossible to use ubuntu in a network
enviroment efficiently. Could somebody please at least confirm that
someone is working on a fix?

Re: [Bug 200337] Re: CD/DVD burning problem in hardy

2008-10-10 Thread JoelOl75

 To Leann Ogasawara:

 (some offtopic)
I booted into the Live CD of intrepid but the graphics would not start. I
traced it down to the fact that my Wacom Graphire3 table was plugged in to
USB. When the tablet is unplugged, X starts with no problem, but crashes
almost immediately after I plug in the tablet. Logs say error due to conflict
 between mouse and the tablet.

I did not try the CD/DVD issue.

Not to jump in on this, since it doesn't much matter anymore... But I
had a problem with my DVD burner as well. The cause was the mountpoint
and a config file that was left over from the earlier version. All that
it took to fix it was to delete /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules
and reboot... Well actually I moved the file to my home directory just
in case I needed it... Seems this was causing the problem. It gets
regenerated on reboot.

So if you're having problems this might be worth a shot... Some bugs
come from changes between versions with old config files laying around.

Joel.

[Bug 271138] Re: mouse and keyboard unresponsive when gdm first runs

2008-10-10 Thread sirkubador
It definitely seems like X problem. I booted by killing X and startx so
I got into GNOME desktop, but mouse and keyboard did not work anyway.
