[Bug 129391] Re: : colonial India.............. a must read

2010-09-07 Thread JOY
*Just see what British thought of India and how they managed to
 rule us.*

*plz don't forget to read the letter in the end
  *
Just read what INDIA was as per LORD MACAULAY on his statement on 2nd
February 1835, in the last snap. That would really shock us Old Photographs
from Indian History. Please Read the last Article Carefully

The daughter of an Indian maharajah seated on a panther she shot,
 sometime during 1920s.

A British man gets a pedicure from an Indian servant.

The Grand Trunk Road , built by Sher Shah Suri, was the main trade route
 from Calcutta to Kabul .

A group of Dancing or notch girls began performing with their elaborate
 costumes and jewelry*. *

A rare view of the President's palace and the Parliament building in New
 Delhi .

Women gather at a party in Mumbai ( Bombay ) in 1910.

A group from Vaishnava, a sect founded by a Hindu mystic. His followers
 are called Gosvami-maharajahs

An aerial view of Jama Masjid mosque in Delhi , built between 1650 and
 1658.

The Imperial Airways 'Hanno' Hadley Page passenger airplane carries the
England to India air mail, stopping in Sharjah to refuel.

*See what the India was at 1835... *

 *Read this carefully*

But now JAn Indian owns Britain's East India Company - Another circle got
 completed.

The East India Company which ruled India for more than 200 years is now
ruled by an Indian Sanjiv Mehta who took over the company for $150 lac.
He said” at an emotional level as an Indian, when you think with your heart
as I do, I had this huge feeling of redemption - this indescribable feeling
of owning a company that once owned us” *
 *
But media is not interested in such great news.

They were busy in useless Sania and Shoaib’s marriage

Let us be the media…..Fwd this mail to all Indians... *
Sanjiv Mehta, CEO of The East India Company *

 *
 Just think………???*

 *
Forward it to all Indian* *s* *. I really liked it, so forwarding it to
 you* *.*

[Bug 632231] [NEW] Keyboard locks up after login, no desktop appears

2010-09-07 Thread Nicholas Christian Langkjær Ipsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When trying to install Maverick on my Desktop, I ran into quite a few
issues. First off, when using the live cd and selecting Install
Ubuntu, the installer didn't appear, only the top panel with the
Sound and Shutdown icons, which didn't work. I then tried to use the
other option Try Ubuntu without installing, but that simply left me
staring at the plymouth screen. If seemed like everything loaded, just
in the background. Also, the keyboard locked up, and even the *lock keys
didn't work, unless I used ctrl+alt+sysrq+r.

Finally, I successfully installed it with the alternative cd, but now
I'm again stuck with a locked keyboard and a cursor, only this time it's
not during plymouth, but just after having logged in using GDM! Only the
cursor and the default wallpaper are on the screen; no icons, no panels,
no nothing. I can move the cursor so it's not a total freeze.

I was able to use ctrl+alt+F1 to get to a TTY before logging in, and
installed all available updates. Didn't help. I also tried Gnome Safe
Mode, and Unity. Same result. Haven't tried KDM yet, will do if it
helps.

[Bug 389686] Re: compiz --replace fails to kill metacity, resulting in cpu overload

2010-09-07 Thread Tebibyte
Login into Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 with compiz --replace , emerald
--replace and avant-window-navigator as autostart programs causes
1) CPU overload ... most possible from gcond2
2) hard drive constantly buzy/ in use even when machine is innactive
3) performance issues (slow)

killall metacity does not work for me,

Thinking it is metacity related I installed _xfce4_

Booting into an xfce4 session with compiz --replace , emerald --replace and
avant-window-navigator as autostart programs solved the problem,
specifically
1)gconfd2 does not appear when i run top
2) hard drive is not constantly in use

[Bug 516023] Re: Critcally low shown on unplug at 100% full

2010-09-07 Thread Karel Zengdurf
If g-p-m would just perform even a slight filter for extreme outliers in
its data, this would be solved. I have a Medion Akoya (MSI Wind
rebrand), and yes whenever I unplug (even after fully charging),
apparently the battery reports an extreme power surge (not even sure if
it's real, it could also just be a glitch).

Not only does this trigger notifications that the battery is almost
empty when it's clearly not, it also throws off the scale of the graphs
in the power-statistics window, and the discharge profile has a bunch of
erroneous peaks in it.

Filtering them out would be fairly trivial. My normal power consumption
seems to hover between 10W and 14W, while the typical peak values
generated on unplugging the cable always is in the range of 710-720W. I
don't think there are any normal circumstances under which a battery
should/would report such a huge leap in power usage, not even when it's
near the end of its lifetime and almost immediately dies.

BTW in a related question, does anyone know where g-p-m stores its
charge profile and discharge profile data? I looked for it in
several places, without luck. I want to see and try if I can manually
remove the huge peak values that are in the discharge profile, because
right now it looks like a flat line with two or three peaks towering out
of it (because of the scaling of the peaks).

[Bug 553646] Re: Waking from hibernate unexpectedly prompts for password

2010-09-07 Thread Stuart Gillies
Not only do I not use a password to log on, I also have the screensaver
set to not require a password when interrupted. So it is odd that power
management requires one when resuming. To me it seems that the
screensaver setting and the logon setting should be one and the same and
should match the PM resume behaviour as well. Either you need a
password to use the machine (non-su), or you don't! Then there is the
keyring password to consider ...

[Bug 605577] Re: Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title

2010-09-07 Thread David Planella
Here's what happens:

In an English system, the English language pack installs the following
translation catalogs for yelp:

/usr/share/locale-langpack/en/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/e...@shaw/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_AU/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_CA/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo
/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo

They correspond to each one of the variants for which there are
translations. However, /usr/share/locale-langpack/en/LC_MESSAGES/yelp.mo
should not exist, since that corresponds to the POSIX (C, or US English)
locale, in which all applications are written - and therefore no
translations are needed.

The 'en' translation is being created from the 'e...@shaw' one, and that's
because the translation tarball exported from Launchpad to create the
latest full language pack on 2010-08-17 [1] contains the yelp e...@shaw
translation in the en/LC_MESSAGES folder. I'm not sure why, but perhaps
because of the recent changes with @ locales in Launchpad?

I'm adding a task for Launchpad Translations.

Thanks Dennis for pointing to the cause of the problem.

Re: [Bug 608577] Re: Pressing ENTER after automatic login logs out abruptly

2010-09-07 Thread Aurelian Radoaca
I don't know if it was a gdm problem. It might have been a kernel problem.
With a new kernel version, the problem was alleviated,
but still a problem remained with Seamonkey browser.
After selecting an URL an pressing ENTER would still log out.

With manual login, pressing ENTER first used to make the screen image
disappear and reappear (the login screen).
The problem was only on a 32 bit machine.

[Bug 632272] [NEW] fails to build on amd64: attempts to wrap removed ev_selection_get_selection_map

2010-09-07 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

ev_selection_get_selection_map was removed in this upstream commit:

http://git.gnome.org/browse/evince/commit/?id=18d2af9bce80392407fae997c8dfa029f5a54123

... but gnome-python-desktop still tries to wrap it. This results in
this compiler warning on amd64, which is promoted to a build failure by
our buildd infrastructure because int/pointer conversions can result in
somewhat rare crashes on amd64:

  evince.c: In function '_wrap_ev_selection_get_selection_map':
evince.c:4900: warning: implicit declaration of function
'ev_selection_get_selection_map'
evince.c:4900: warning: assignment makes pointer from integer without a cast

I suspect the proper fix is to simply remove that wrapping from gnome-
python-desktop, although I don't know whether the new interface needs to
be wrapped too.

[Bug 632284] [NEW] gnome-terminal is slow during vertical scrolling

2010-09-07 Thread Victor Costan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Reproduce by typing the following command in a blank shell

for i in {1..200}; do echo Some random echo output for line $i; done

The following methods for scrolling are significantly slower than in OSX's
Terminal.app (I believe they're also slower than in previous versions of
Ubuntu, but I don't have anything handy to test):
* mouse-wheel scrolling
* clicking near the top of the scroll bar when all the way at the bottom
* clicking near the bottom of the scroll bar when all the way at the top
* clicking on either the top or the bottom arrow of the scroll bar

This bug makes it really hard for me to do development work in Ubuntu.

[Bug 629508] Re: gnome-about crashed with KeyError in make_info_label()

2010-09-07 Thread David Planella
Erdal,

as mentioned in the upstream bug:

That's a bug in the ku translation:

msgid %(name)s: %(value)s
msgstr %(nav)s: %(nirx)s

%(name) and %(value) shouldn't be translated. So the translated string should
be %(name)s: %(value)s.

The translation of this particular string cannot be fixed in Launchpad,
so you'll have to fix it on damned-lies:

[Bug 607357] Re: gnome-about-me: cannot cope with incorrect current password under LDAP backend

2010-09-07 Thread Varga Péter
This is an issue on x86 too.
Some more symptoms (sorry for not being able to reproduce the correct dialogs,
I do not have this app in English)
1) Clicking on Change Password the 'Present password' line accepts ANY
passwords, after clicking on the Check button (the one to the right form the
'Presnet password' input box).
2) Then you give your new password (twice). You do this happily as you have
been NOT warned that you made a typo at the present password. You click on the
Change Password button and you get: 'The old and new passwords are the same.'
(of course they are not.)

[Bug 632331] [NEW] gvfsd-smb using as much CPU as is available

2010-09-07 Thread SuperMatt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

GVFS is using a lot of system resources. According to top:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
25625 matthew 20 0 102m 4008 3112 R 49 0.1 3:19.32 gvfsd-smb
25631 matthew 20 0 102m 4008 3112 R 49 0.1 3:19.06 gvfsd-smb
25627 matthew 20 0 102m 4012 3112 R 48 0.1 3:11.93 gvfsd-smb
25629 matthew 20 0 102m 4008 3112 R 48 0.1 3:14.82 gvfsd-smb

This is on a two core box, so as you can see, it is trying to use up all
the CPU it can get its hands on. Despite not affecting the performance
of the box, it seems to give up CPU time quite nicely, it is a little
disconcerting.

Matthew.

[Bug 632341] [NEW] Num Lock is not activated by default at GDM

2010-09-07 Thread Nickedynick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

This is a pretty trivial bug, but it may be a candidate for future a 100
papercuts cycle. I did try searching to see if it had been reported
before, but couldn't find any - apologies if I've missed it!

At present, NumLock isn't enabled when you go to log in to Ubuntu, so
you have to manually enable it before entering numerical passwords on
the number pad. While this isn't a critical issue, it is one that I feel
should be fixed. I don't know anyone who uses the number pad for its
arrows, and other OSs do enable NumLock by default.

Additionally to achieve this behaviour at present requires installing
the numlockx package, and manually editing /etc/gdm/Init/Default - which
is clearly not appropriate for new users.

[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager

2010-09-07 Thread Gabor Heja
I have seen the same behavior with Lucid, my machine was up for about
one month and during that time I have experienced big I/O waits several
times.

I found gnome-power-manager to be the source of the problem so last time
I had it I logged some info about the case.

The result was: in 6 minutes gnome-power-manager memory consumption has
grown from 372MB (which can hardly be called normal, I guess) to 569MB.
(Details: http://pastebin.com/YjFjZcqV )

Restarting it is a working workaround of course.

[Bug 632362] [NEW] eye of gnome cannot open image file with wrong extension

2010-09-07 Thread Jonas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Eye of gnome fails to open a jpg image file, if file-extension is .png,
failing with the following non-friendly error-message:

Could not load image 'image.png'
Fatal error reading PNG image file: Not a PNG file

However, EOG has no problems opening the file if the file-extension is
completely removed. This inconsistent behaviour should be fixed, and
from a users point of view I would say the best solution is to simply
open the file as any other file, possibly with a message to the user
that the file-extension on the file is wrong (maybe even suggest to
change the file extension to the correct one). In previous versions
ubuntu/gnome has been good at ignoring file extensions and checking file
content to determine what sort of file it is.

To reproduce error:
- rename a jpg-file, image.jpg to image.png
- Browse to the file-location in nautilus (nautilus will correctly display a
miniature of the file, regardless of file extension, if miniatures are enabled )
- in nautilus: double click the file, or right-click and select Open with
image viewer
- or in a terminal, type: eog /path/to/image.png

Platform:
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04
Package:
Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu1

[Bug 605577] Re: Help contents title bar shows cubes with numbers instead of a proper title

2010-09-07 Thread David Planella
What happened was that for some unknown reason an en.po file containing
e...@shaw translation was imported into Launchpad at some point. We do not
know if this was because of a bug in the imports and how they deal with
@ translations or a mistakenly commited translation or something else.

What we do know is that it is not a bug in the translation exports, so
I'm marking the Launchpad Translations task as Invalid.

In order to fix this, I've uploaded an empty (without msgstr
translations) en.po file to the yelp template in Launchpad Translations,
and this empty file should replace the current en.po with wrong Shavian
translations.

This effectively means that in the next translations export the empty
file will fix this. If we're lucky, and the file is imported some time
today before the scheduled export, the next Maverick language pack
tomorrow should include the fix. If not, the next one on Sunday will fix
it.

[Bug 630975] Re: package gtk2-engines-pixbuf 2.12.9-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: pembacaan singkat dalam buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb saat `./usr/share/doc/gtk2-engines-pixbuf/changelog.gz')

2010-09-07 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
