[Bug 1875730] Re: Gnome Shell wallpaper corruption

2020-04-28 Thread Antoine Brunner
** Description changed:

- Last week-end, after restarting my T470s running Ubuntu 19.10, I
- experienced a lot of visual glitches that didn't occur before. However,
- I had already noticed that some applications were unexpectedly freezing
- for about 5-10 seconds.
+ Last week-end, after restarting my T470s running Ubuntu 19.10, I experienced
a lot of visual glitches that didn't occur before.
+ Some of the glitches include wallpaper corruptions, but also font corruption,
where certain characters don't render or render in a weird way. I have also had
some icons disappearing from the launcher, or some applications being
corrupted. I have posted more images about this problem here
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2441857=13951062#post13951062.
+ It is also worth noting that before restarting I had already noticed that
some applications were unexpectedly freezing for about 5-10 seconds.

I have already tried reinstalling xorg, without success. Then, I tried
running Ubuntu 20.04 from a USB stick, and the problem doesn't occur.
Today, I have upgraded Ubuntu to version 20.04 to see if it would fix
  it, but without success again.

Note that when I restart the display server (Alt-F2 -> r -> Enter), it
fixes the problem (sometimes I have to restart it several times).

I would be happy to give you more information if you need.

Re: [Bug 1860483] Re: [nouveau, GeForce 7300 LE] screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-04-28 Thread Paul Collinsworth
I replaced the Nvidia video card in my system and the problem seems to
have gone with it.

I had seen an improvement with the Nvidia card after switching from the
digital video output to the on-card VGA output, but over a period of a
couple of weeks or so, the video degraded again.

The new card is a VisionTek Radeon 5450.

[Bug 1875038] Re: Lock screen not really functioning - Gnome Shell extensions visible and active even in lock screen

2020-04-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I know getting bugs fixed or even recognised as bugs can be very time
consuming and frustrating.

In the case of gnome-shell extensions we only have the choice between:

  * Allow extensions, and allow them to do anything including breaking
the shell; or

  * Disallow extensions.

A more restricted middleground for extensions does not exist and is
unlikely to ever exist because it would be such a large long term
change.

It looks like the Nvidia GPU is a little too "new" for the nouveau

a future kernel version, if not already.

[Bug 1875782] [NEW] tracker-store and tracker-extract using 100% CPU

2020-04-28 Thread TomaszChmielewski
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 20.04, tracker-store and
tracker-extract processes are using 100% CPU. CPU temperature goes above
80 degrees celsius.

This is causing fan spinning and computer is very loud because of it.

I've tried removing tracker package, but it wants to remove the whole
desktop with it.

[Bug 1875730] [NEW] Gnome Shell wallpaper corruption

2020-04-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Last week-end, after restarting my T470s running Ubuntu 19.10, I
experienced a lot of visual glitches that didn't occur before. However,
I had already noticed that some applications were unexpectedly freezing
for about 5-10 seconds.

[Bug 1866841] Please test proposed package

2020-04-28 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello AsciiWolf, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell into focal-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/3.36.1-5ubuntu2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

It appears you're using the GNOME Adwaita theme, which may not support

Please try changing your theme back to Ubuntu's Yaru and then dark mode

Re: [Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04

2020-04-28 Thread ethanay
Copy Q does nothing to fix the issue for me. It exists with or without any
clipboard manager or extension on my Pop!_OS 19.10 install.

Fortunately for my workflow I do as much work as possible in programs not
affected by the bug such as gedit and zim and I believe focuswriter.

Much thanks to the people working to squash this bug! And apologies to real
life bugs for the violent analogy!

the bug persists on my system with or without any clipboard manager or

** Tags added: apport-collected third-party-packages

** Description changed:

I tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 official on VMWare.
But I couldn't switch pages in "Show Applications".

  1. create new machine on VWMARE
  2. specify the path of ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso to CD/DVD(SATA) drive.
  3. boot the virtual machine.
  4. choose "Try Ubuntu".
  5. choose "Show Applications" icon.
  6. choose gray circle icon to switch pages.
  7. But the page will not be switched.

The daily build around at Apr 17 of Ubuntu 20.04 works well.
(I removed the daily builds from that time, So I can't reconfirm the newer
daily build.
But I think I didn't experience such issue.)

I'll show these sha1sum of ISOs which I tried.

  58fcddef2be2b0cea9406a408701f8d65529fc89 focal-desktop-amd64.iso=> OK
  657c603c1f1ea7beb28d00a4c589b2f2698d832c ubuntu-20.04-desktop-amd64.iso => NG

  Note:

  I'm using VMWare ver 15.5.1 build-15018445.
But it didn't happen on Intel NUC (which is installed ubuntu 19.10).

[Bug 1873638] Re: Titlebar buttons incorrectly placed when set to appear on the left

2020-04-28 Thread NITSCH Zoltán
I can confirm this bug, it can be 100% reporduced and affects everyone who sets
the window buttons from the right to the left (e.g. via gnome tweaks or
gsettings). Very ugly and irritating.
Most applications are ok, it could some others as well but it is mostly just
the gnome-control-center.
@Dragosh: it does not help if you make the window bigger, on maximaized on a
full-hd monitor, it remains the same

Actually Gnome Tweak is displayed also incorrectly, it is even more
fubar, Most of the times, none of the windows buttons are visible, nor
the sidebar on the left, they only appear if you maximize it

Yes, it was working, albeit it was behaving also differently. Instead
of:

gga $ sudo bash

(password)

root # xdg-user-dirs DESKTOP
/root/Escritorio

it would return:

gga $ sudo bash

(password)

root # xdg-user-dirs DESKTOP
/home/gga/Escritorio

The button you are calling waffle is the button grid icons for the

[Bug 1875744] [NEW] xdg-user-dir does for root does not return the locale names of the directories

2020-04-28 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04, the root user does not
receive the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and thus the locale names are
not translated.

Example:

$ sudo bash
[sudo] password for gga:

# xdg-user-dir DESKTOP
/root/Desktop

With the proper (Spanish) .config/user-dirs.dirs:

$ sudo bash
[sudo] password for gga:

# xdg-user-dir DESKTOP
/root/Escritorio

[Bug 1875445] Re: Volume slider doesn't produce sound

2020-04-28 Thread David
Hello,
I tried to narrow down the possible triggers of the above-described bug. I
think the bug is triggered by KeePassXC - it's reproducible and happens every
time ONLY when I use Keepass to enter my credential on certain webpages in
Firefox (perhaps it has something to do with Firefox, too). As requested I
attach journalctl (only the part when the bug happens) - it really a few lines
of logs. I also attach screenshot of Settings->Sound window before the bug and
after to show additional entries of dummy adapters.
Let me know I can do anything else.

[Bug 1852183] Re: [X11] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04

2020-04-28 Thread J. B. Rainsberger
For the benefit of bystanders who might be using the Clipboard Indicator
extension to Gnome, I've switched to CopyQ and been quite happy with the
results. I'll know more in the next 2-3 weeks whether this problem
persists in my environment when I complete my next expense report.

In the meantime, thanks to everyone involved in trying to diagnose and
fix this problem. I share many people's frustrations about not getting a
version of Mutter that seems to work, especially since it seems beyond
me to try to upgrade Mutter independently of the rest of the operating
system in order to evaluate the results. Coupling!

[Bug 1875729] Re: Fractional Scaling crashes gnome-control-center

2020-04-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1875729] [NEW] Fractional Scaling crashes gnome-control-center

2020-04-28 Thread Ben
Public bug reported:

Overview:

When applying "Fractional Scaling" of 150% or 175%, the screen goes
black for a while, then after a little while it comes back unscaled and
gnome-control-center has crashed.

Found in:

Description:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release:20.04

gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:3.36.1-1ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1:3.36.1-1ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.36.1-1ubuntu5 500
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Steps to reproduce:

1. Go into "Screen Display" in Settings.
2. Enable "Fractional Scaling".
3. Select "150%" or "175%".
4. Observe that the screen goes blank for about 5 seconds.
5. Observe that upon the screen coming back, the Settings application has
crashed.

Additional details:

If instead of selecting "150%" or "175%" I select "125%", then the
screen will scale to 200% instead, but if I select and apply "125%"
again, then suddenly only just over of a quarter of the screen is
recognised as display and the rest just displays my background and top
bar extended.

I am using a 4k display over a display port cable.
I am using a GTX 1070 TI with the Nvidia 440.64 driver.

changed my password, the Livepatch is complaining "An error occured when
checking for Livepatch updates.". Went to update the password in
Settings, but it won't accept the new password saying "Error connecting
to Ubuntu Single Sign-On server: Provided email/password is not
correct". The web version still works.

[Bug 1874217] Re: Dual monitor setup with secondary monitor in portrait-right mode cause tiled windows to occupy 1.5 monitors

2020-04-28 Thread Tomek
I also have the same issue with two monitors connected, one of which in
portrait mode. When selecting the second monitor to switch to portrait
mode, it extends the rotated monitor about halfway into the second
screen and they are shown as overlapping in the display settings. It is
not possible to rotate the monitor.

A temporary workaround is to set the rotation with xrandr or with the
NVIDIA X Server. However, once the machine is rebooted or the screen
lock turned on, the settings are "forgotten" as if one made no changes
to the screen orientation at all, back to zero.

Here is also a thread on reddit with more people experiencing the exact
same issue:

[Bug 1852183]

2020-04-28 Thread Eike Rathke
(In reply to larrybradley from comment #25)
> Interesting attitude. If you buy a Toyota and the engine goes bad, do you
> expect Toyota to say, "Sorry, not our problem, they sold us bad engines."
Interesting approach. I hate car allegories, but the broken part is not even
part of the car. So if the bridge you want to ride over is broken you go to the
car manufacturer and tell him to make your car fly.

> Your name is on the product. The product is broken.
No, the clipboard manager of the compositor of your window manager of your
operating system is broken. That's why there is the Mutter bug linked and this
bug here is flagged as notourbug.

Additional findings from the linked Mutter bug are that the problem
seems to be (also) related to the Clipboard Indicator GNOME Shell
Extension, see already comment 7 here, so you may want to remove that.
