(In this case the screen wasn't completely blank but had a non-flashing cursor in the top left corner. After updating mutter to 43 beta, my top corner stopped functioning as a mouse hotspot even though it is defined as such in "Multitasking" settings: I need to click "Activities" manually to invoke the window picker. I think this is to do with the hardware (probably 3D) acceleration under OpenGL since the effect is reproducable by installing virt-manager, setting the type to SPICE instead of VNC and then enabling OpenGL hadware accelerated rendering (3d acceleration as it might be called.) Thus, I believe that this is not limited to just webkit.
