[Bug 151858] gksudo reports authenication rejected - none of the protocols specified are supported and host-base failed.. I have reinstalled Ubuntu 7.04 four times, get same message

2007-10-12 Thread Don Bradford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

nautilus:5297): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.
Initializing gnome-mount extension

I have reinstalled the operating system several times. After as few as
20 minutes and up to maybe an hour or so, gksudo nautilus works, then I
start getting this message and I no longer log into root using gksudo.
The only thing I have done after installing the operating system is
install a printer, a scanner, and set up sharing on a windows local
network. I am using Ubuntu 7.04 updated to the latest fixes.

[Bug 151787] epiphany: Save as vs. download

2007-10-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When trying to download a .deb file using Epiphany, it prompts:

File Type: “Software package”.
It is unsafe to open “filename.deb” as it could potentially damage your
documents or invade your privacy. You can download it instead.

It then gives the options save as... and download. To me, there is
no difference in meaning between these options. However, download has
no apparent effect aside from popping up a window for a split second,
while save as... prompts for a location in which to save the file.

I just now realized that download saves the file to the desktop, but
this is definitely not clear from the prompt. Both options are doing
both downloading the file and saving the file...so the different
words are not at all helpful.

In addition, I should be able to do what I want with the file; epiphany
should not second-guess my judgement by making it annoying to install
software.

[Bug 66104] Re: scim: input freezes in various applications under XIM mode

2007-10-12 Thread Ming Hua
** Description changed:

In gutsy, the default mode of scim (detemined by im-switch's settings
scim) uses XIM mode. This may cause problems in some applications and
make it impossible to input anything, even if you choose the
English/Keyboard input method. This happens most often in nautilus, but
is also seen in gedit, gnome-terminal, etc.

This bug has been around for a long time, it only became more visible
because of the change in the default settings of scim and the Ubuntu
  package.

There are two work arounds for this problem:

  1. If you do not use any programs linked to libstdc++5 (very few of the
Ubuntu official packages do, one know exception is the fglrx video
driver for ATi cards; but plenty of third-party programs do, such as
firefox downloaded from www.mozilla.com, and Adobe's PDF reader), you
can use the scim-immodule setting in im-switch. To change the im-switch
  setting, just run im-switch -s scim-immodule command.

- 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you dont' know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
+ 2. If you do not use the deadkeys (often seen on European keyboards, and if
you don't know what a deadkey is, you are not using it), you can change scim's
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic setting. The procedure to change this setting is:
  (a) Set scim not to start automatically (because it's useless to change the
configuration file when scim is running) using the command im-switch -s none.
 Log out and re-login.
  (b) Edit your ~/.scim/config configuration file, change the
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic option to true.
  (c) Reset scim to start automatically with command im-switch -s scim. Log
out and re-login.

If you are using programs linked to libstdc++5 as well as deadkeys,
there is no known workaround for you. You may try the scim-bridge
- setting of im-switch (you need to install scim-bridge-* packages first),
- but it's not clear whether it works or not.

[Bug 92436] Re: Password is required twice after laptop sleep

2007-10-12 Thread Paul Crowley
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 43169 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43169

This bug is definitely not a duplicate of bug #43169, whatever it is;
that marking is in error.

This behaviour is irritating if you use hibernate and there's a very
simple fix - it would be nice to see the fix go into Gutsy. gnome-
screensaver can now very straightforwardly be configured via PAM to pass
your passphrase on to gnome-keyring, so that typing the passphrase once
serves for both jobs. See:

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam

Whether or not you decide this fix is appropriate though, please fix the
duplicate status on this bug - thanks!

[Bug 151624] Re: Proposed importing audio CD when resuming from hibernation

2007-10-12 Thread Loïc Minier
(grmpf launchpad ate my comment)

I don't think I left sound-juicer open. I wasn't sure whether gnome-
volume-manager or hal would have enough information to take the decision
to launch sound-juicer or not as it probably requires querying the name
of the audio CD (but I'm not sure).

I guess what one expects is that after a suspend / resume, the data CD
or USB drives etc. are mounted again and if they are the same nothing is
done, but if they are different, then the usual action take place: if
it's data, nautilus should open it, if it's audio, sound-juicer should
import it etc.

I reassigned back to gnome-volume-manager because this might be more
generic than just audio CDs after all: if it's a new data CD, it should
be mounted and opened, if it was already in the drive before suspending,
it should probably be mounted but not displayed.

[Bug 116990] Re: Rhythmbox sound problems (clicking/snapping/crackling) when not using crossfading backend

2007-10-12 Thread Loïc Minier
@Martin: I'm afraid the files had too low sound (amplitude didn't reach
the maximum) and hence are improper test cases.

To create a proper test case, people with a sound file exposing the problem
should convert it to wav with this command:
gst-launch -v filesrc location=Music/foo.ogg ! decodebin ! audioconvert !
audio/x-raw-int, width=(int)16, depth=(int)16 ! wavenc ! filesink
location=16.wav

(replace Music/foo.ogg with the path to your sound file)

and the same command with 16 replaced by 32 at the 3 places

then aplay 16.wav and aplay 32.wav.

(I don't get the bug, so it's not easy for me to attach a fixed test
file.)

** Description changed:

- After unsuccessfully trying to open a .xcf file with eog, the default
- program to open the image became eog rather than the gimp. Now everytime
- I double-click a .xcf, eog opens with an error. There is no way for me

I think default programs should not change unless the attempted
operation is successful or if the user changes it him or herself. An
even better option is to have an pop-up box asking the user if they want

[Bug 132992] Re: [gutsy] rhythmbox cannot load UPnP plugin: python-louie package missing

2007-10-12 Thread John Cooper
It would be nice if when I tried to enable the plugin rather than saying
just Error failed to load plugin it could say that this plugin
requires package python-louie and even nicer if it could have a button
to install that packge for you.

Perhaps there could be a change in the description on the plugin
manager, as a quick fix, to say make sure you have python-louie
installed before trying this package.

It all worked fine, for me, as soon a I installed python-louie but I had
to guess what to install and it was not obvious.

Does anyone have any hints for debugging this bug? I'd like to help

Btw, this bug has an annoying side effect on a laptop. When gnome-

for entering powersaving (sleep or hibernate) is never voided. I guess
that's a separate bug though.

[Bug 150513] Re: Terminal window black when maximized

2007-10-12 Thread speakman
No, it does not appear with desktop effects turned off.
Actually, with the latest updates, it's just black for a few seconds, then it's
all visible by it self.

But another related problem is when I open up a new Tab with Ctrl+Shift+T (or
by menus) nothing seems to happen (except that the cursor stops blinking).
Then I really have to click on the window (anywhere) until the window update
it's contents.

[Bug 151954] Nautilus freeze desktop and kill CPU when handle SVG files

2007-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I work for some vectorial logo's with Inkscape.
After I do primary shapes and I imported a 24mb png inside the svg file, I have
to embed image file on svg [ here can be a point of this problem ].

Now when I save this file to desktop, Desktop(Nautilus) freeze, CPU go 100%.
Re Login (instead restart) and the same problem. Because the file was saved
to desktop,
Nautilus tried to understand this SVG file with embed bitmap and try to
create a thumbnail.

Then I restart - the same problem. Each restart - Nautilus freeze
desktop because the filw was there.

I need to go as ROOT, to install Thunar, to navigate with Thunar on HOME
partition and to move SVG file (68 mb) in other folder.

Then I can enter with my USER credentials on computer and all was OK again.
Just for testing purposes I navigate with Nautilus in the folder that contain
SVG file.
Nautilus freeze again, CPU 100%, so I need to restart.

I put my folder on a stick and I go to a friend with Gutsy to test on
his desktop.

I obtain the same behavior. Nautilus freeze, CPU gone wild.

On XP I can have 200mb Corel Draw files with thumbnail and no problem.

I think Nautilus has problems with the bitmap binary code embed in SVG.
But this is only a guess...

I hope to see this fixed before Gutsy launch.
We need a true stable Nautilus.

[Bug 151997] visualisation button sometimes does nothing

2007-10-12 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

From testing of gutsy amd64 dvd 20071010.2:

Open rhythmbox. Click on the button Visualization (once!). You will
note that nothing happens.

If you then manage to get it to a point where it will play something,
the visualization - that is, swirly patterns - appears. Now the button
turns it on and off and shows a black screen when it's turned on but not
available.

This is confusing. Probably, 1. the button should be greyed out when it
isn't meaningful and 2. the real contents display should be displayed
rather than the black screen - although there might be other sensible
approaches.

[Bug 152006] connect to server / browse network does something unexpected

2007-10-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

From testing of gutsy amd64 dvd 20071010.2:

I wanted to access an anonymous ftp area on my house network. So I
selected Places / Connect to server.

In the resulting window I selected Service type: Public FTP. Then I
thought oh, a browse button, let me see what it does.

What it does is bring up a copy of Places / Network. I don't think this
is correct. It should bring up a subdirectory of Places / Network which
corresponds to the root of the selected service type. If the service
type is not browseable then the Browse button should be disabled.

Hi. I think this may be related too : after upgrading yesterday to
Kubuntu 7.10 my mail bogofilter decided to put all of my mail ( from all
of my ids ) except for two items in to my local spam folder.

Disabling bogofilter within kmail alows all mail through.

if this so, this may well be a bogofilter config / implementation
problem, rather than a specific mail client problem.

Actually in Gnome Alt+F2 dialog, the Up key browses history from the

Re: [Bug 151954] Re: Nautilus freeze desktop and kill CPU when handle SVG files

2007-10-12 Thread Nemes Ioan Sorin
In addition to my previous mail (1 minute ago), I can open folder with
SVG files - Nautilus does not crash - just push the CPU to 100%.

If I close this folder even I don't do any operation, Nautilus still
remain at 60 - 100% CPU.

I must kill him every time.

Curiously only some SVG files can do this - seems to be SVG files where
are embedded graphics OR complicated fills like pattern fills [svg
patterns with a lot of details - repeated many times in background of an
object].

Right now my CPU is 100% - I can't do almost anything ONLY because I
visited a folder ;).

I tried to open a terminal - terminal window appear and disappear
instantly.

Maybe is not a Nautilus fault but 99,3% peoples will perceive that
Nautilus is unstable.

2007-10-12 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 150984] Re: Title of the 'Similar words' frame in gnome-dictionary gets overlapped by the Close Frame and Sort icons, when the frame is re-sized

2007-10-12 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The gedit way impose a limitation, I'm not sure that's better for the
users, what is wrong with having the choice to truncate the text if you
want to move the sidebar? Would you prefer to not let the option to
user who would like to use it?

[Bug 152004] does not work on ftp gnome-vfs(?) areas

2007-10-12 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I have some music .oggs available for anonymous ftp on my house network.

I used Places / Connect to server / Public FTP to connect to the server
and used the mouse to browse to a relevant directory.

Then I double-clicked on one of the .oggs. Totem opened and appeared to
be trying to play, but no music came out. I dragged another file (with
left mouse button held down) into the totem window and it added it to
the playlist. I was able to rearrange the playlist but still no sound
came out.

After a bit more fiddling I got an error dialogue
An error occurred
Could not perform seek on resource.

** Affects: totem (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
