[Bug 183443] Re: Only beginning of certain mp3s are played

2008-01-16 Thread Parthan
I tried to play the file in totem and it shows+plays only the first 3
seconds of this file. But when I try the same in other media player,
namely amarok, it shows+plays 2:27 mins of the song, which is perhaps
the entire song. I could reproduce the error and hence I confirm the
error.

[Bug 40866] Re: [dapper] Cannot use the 'Super_L' key for shortcuts

2008-01-16 Thread interp
Same problem here on Ubuntu 7.10.

Workaround:
Run gconf-editor
Change keys in
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings
apps/metacity/window_keybindings
Say Mod3 or Mod4 or Mod5 to tell the key you mean, Mod4m

You can find and set the modification bits with xmodmap:
$ xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 3 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lock
control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x6d)
mod1Alt_L (0x40), Alt_L (0x7d), Meta_L (0x9c)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3Super_L (0x7f)
mod4Hyper_L (0x80)
mod5Mode_switch (0x5d), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x74), ISO_Level3_Shift
(0x7c)

If your map does not look like this one, use xmodmap to change the modification
bits:
clear Mod4
add Mod4 = Hyper_L
or similar
An alternative is to use xkbcomp (read out keyboard table, change, read back
in), but this is trickier.

[Bug 183463] duplicate anniversary in calendar

2008-01-16 Thread Anton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since anniversaries typically are between two people, if you have both in your
contact list with the anniversary set, you will get two entries on that
particular date in your calendar. This seems illogical. So, in stead of seeing:
[ Anniversary: Smith, Jack (1) ]
[ Anniversary: Smith, Jane (1) ]
I'd expect to see:
[ Anniversary: Jack and Jane (1) ]
Also, I'd like to select how names should be formatted in anniversaries or
birthdays, like 'first last', 'last, first' or 'last' or 'first' only; or
possibly 'first'/'first (last)' or 'last'/last (first)' to resolve ambiguities.

[Bug 40866] Re: [dapper] Cannot use the 'Super_L' key for shortcuts

2008-01-16 Thread interp
For the xkbcomp workaround to set the modifier bits correctly:
Read out the xkbcomp with
$ xkbcomp -o my-xkbcomp :0.0
Modify the xkbcomp map with your editor.
Read it back in with
$ xkbcomp my-xkbcomp :0.0
(ignore the warnings of undefined keys).
Attached is the diff of my xkbcomp, if this helps.
See at the end of the diff to see how to change the modifier bits.

[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH

2008-01-16 Thread Gerv
Jason: are there any risks to having ~/bin in the PATH by default? If
not, why not? It's the traditional Unix place for people to put their
own scripts. If people don't want it, they just don't create the
directory. If people want some other directories, they can add them too
in the way I have, or in a more convenient way to be developed.

It also seems to me that adding it unconditionally (or perhaps,
conditionally on its actually existing), in whatever file you consider
appropriate, is the easiest way to resolve this bug. If someone has to
add UI to Users and Groups, isn't that going to take much longer and be
much more effort?

[Bug 183483] From line in message list does not handle embedded encoding

2008-01-16 Thread interp
Public bug reported:

Names in emails with From headers that have embedded encoding like
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Eric =?utf-8?Q?B=C3=B6se-Wolf?=)

are not displayed correctly in the message list (see attached screenshot),
but are correctly displayed in the message preview.

The message list wrongly says
Eric_B=F6se-Wolf [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Note how evolution seems to have changed the encoding internally from utf-8 to
iso-8859-1
(bu for the mail address, not the mailer's name) and inserted
underscores (between Eric and Böse Wolf and at the end of the email
message).

The message preview correctly says
Eric Böse-Wolf [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Bug 117896] Re: Loses e-mails when moving accross IMAP folders

2008-01-16 Thread Jörn Dreyer
I can confirm this behaviour with gutsy. I am using debian/etch postfix as IMAP
server. Moving mails (to another account) sometimes just flags them as deleted.
As the mailserver is hosted in a vserver I assume that this might be related to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=390740 (Evolution pegs cpu when
connected to overloaded imap server).
Maybe the copy operation does not finish in time and just gets lost?

[Bug 183486] gnome-screensaver locks up randomly when unlocking screen

2008-01-16 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Hello! I'm using Hardy, and I noticed that gnome-screensaver locks up
sometimes when unlocking the screen.

I have the laptop set-up to blank and lock the screen after a while (no
screensaver is actually running). When I return, it asks for the
password. Sometimes it just locks up with the checking password
message, and doesn't do anything else. (The screen remains black, with
the password dialog frozen.)

I can switch to a console and just kill gnome-screensaver, which gives
me back the desktop.

It doesn't happen every time, I can't find a pattern in it.

[Bug 183486] Re: gnome-screensaver locks up randomly when unlocking screen

2008-01-16 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Today I ran an strace from the text console while it was locked up. It
stays in a loop of those gettimeofday/poll/read. I forgot to give the
timing options to strace; it stays for a dozen seconds or so in the poll
call, the rest seems to happen quickly. (I suppose if you know the
arguments to gettimeofday you could get the exact timing.) I killed
strace after awhile.

Let me know if there's anything else I can give. The OS is an up-to-date
Hardy.

[Bug 163220] Re: Manual update blocked by automatic background update check

2008-01-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
(I have rewritten the description text and changed the bug title.)

I think personally this is an important problem and suggests that
somehow both update apps are being allowed to run at once - which I
thought was not allowed. Should each of these apps reserve rights
earlier in the process?

** Summary changed:

- notification stops update
+ Manual update blocked by automatic background update check

** Description changed:

- I boot Ubuntu, and i knew that updates were availables. I ran the update
manager mannually, and there was updates. I clicked over Update install and
then, the tray icon appeared alerting me about the updates.
- The update manager stopped and i had to do a right click over the tray icon
to install.
+ I booted Ubuntu, and I knew that updates were available. So I ran
+ 'Update Manager' manually and the updates were visible. I clicked
+ 'Update' an extra time and then 'Install' and the update tried to start.
+ But then the 'Updates Available' notification icon appeared and stopped
+ my manual update.

- I have replayed the bug 2 once
+ I had to use the notification icon instead. I have recreated this
+ situation twice.

- It is a little bug. (Sorry for my bad english)
+ This is only a little bug. (Sorry about my bad English)
+ (The original text has been rewritten to be more easily understood, but the
English wasn't that bad really.)

[Bug 183534] 'Context menu Close' from a window selector (bottom panel) doesn't close all apps

2008-01-16 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If I use the 'Context menu Close' from bottom panel window selector it
doesn't close all applications it should. Specific case:

Trying to unpack an .uif disk image I installed Magic ISO with Wine and the
application eventually froze.
So I tried to close it by first clicking the top-right 'X' with no result and
then the right-click menu of the window selector option 'Close' with no result.

I eventually closed the app by killing it from inside the System
Monitor. I don't think this should be necessary. A solution could for
example be:

* 'Window selector Right Click Close' could start a timer, and if
the app is still running after n seconds a new gksudo window opens
offering to kill the application.

[Bug 183534] Re: 'Context menu Close' from a window selector (bottom panel) doesn't close all apps

2008-01-16 Thread Roberto Sarrionandia
This should be wishlist.

Gnome offers to kill an application if it is detected as frozen for a
while.

You can do it manually by adding the force-quit applet to the panel, you
can then click a window to kill it.

The problem you describe is applicable when Gnome doesn't detect that an
application has frozen, correct? (The window doesn't turn grey)

2008-01-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

System: Ubuntu 7.10
Due boot with windows
Computer: Dell laptop

I have installed Windows and Ubuntu in my laptop, when it starts, it
will automatically boot to Ubuntu, but I am not using Linux all the
time, sometimes I want to change back to Windows, so at the Login screen
of Ubuntu, I will click on the Option button, then press Restart
button.

Now the Ubuntu is closing down, but after few seconds it will go back to
Login screen with a different background, then if I click on Restart
button again, the same thing happens until you hit the restart button
the third time.

Expected results: When press restart button, it should shut down ubuntu
then restart.

Thanks Pedro. 'Show Menubar' worked.

Do you know why the title bar is missing min, max, close buttons? And

2008-01-16 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 164804] Re: Gnome Login Error

2008-01-16 Thread gilf
I'm adding information here in case it may help in determining the cause
of the problem:

This morning one of our Samba networked Ubuntu computers had the error
message:

[QUOTE]Error: The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:
Gnome_fastuserswitchapplet. Do you want to delete the applet from your
configuration?[/QUOTE]

The workstation is a plain vanilla Ubuntu 7.10 i386 install which has
been working for about a month. No updates have been applied yet. The
stock desktop is used. It is networked with Samba. Two users are
installed on this workstation.

One major network change was instituted last night -- we went from DHCP
to static IPs. Systems were tested last night and the network was
functional. This is a home network with a dialup connection, and we turn
the network (workstations router and modem) off when not in use.

A nautilus bookmark exists on the problem workstation for a Samba shared
file folder on another workstation.

When the workstation was started this morning, the routers and modem
were turned off, as was the computer with the shared Samba file.

The error message appeared twice after two hard reboots. It appeared
about a minute after the desktop was up.

A third attempt at booting was succesful and did not show the error
message -- the router, modem, and shared folder workstation had been
started BEFORE the reboot.

I'm wondering whether this problem is related to STATIC configured
networks which are unresponsive, or unconnected.

I notice some additional evidence here (static IP, network non-
functional, same error message):

2008-01-16 Thread gilf
Reading the prior Bug Description message to mine, above, I also recall
that the problem workstation warned that two users were connected during

These would have been samba network users connected to shared folders on
the problem workstation.

2008-01-16 Thread hggdh
Should have been... do you have a stacktrace available? OTH, this is a
race, and it might not have been fully contained. I *know* I could not
repeat it -- which means at least my scenario was taken care of --, but
other scenarios may exist.

[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH

2008-01-16 Thread John Dong
There are risks -- users can add in-path executables to the system,
making it easier for an exploit to be leashed against the user. A
malicious script can install a bunch of tools under similar names to
existing commands (i.e. ks instead of ls) so that the next time the user
types that on accident, something bad happens.

Of course, if a program has been compromised enough to let this happen,
then this should be the LEAST of your concerns ;-)

I would personally like to see this configurable and not enabled by
default, as it's not really standard practice on any distro currently
and not everyone would like it.

[Bug 178032] Re: Add to Address Book kills Metacity it doesn't return

2008-01-16 Thread Richard Gabriel
I can confirm this bug and I can reproduce it with Gutsy (including
latest updates). However, I believe that gtk-window-decorator is
actually crashing, not evolution or metacity. In fact, if the bug
reporter has selected advanced effects from the Appearance tool, they
are most likely running compiz instead of metacity. I will attempt to
gather more information the next time this happens. Until then, I hope
that narrowing this problem down to the correct process affected is
helpful.
