I tried to play the file in totem and it shows+plays only the first 3 seconds of this file. [Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH
Jason: are there any risks to having ~/bin in the PATH by default? If not, why not? It's the traditional Unix place for people to put their own scripts. If people don't want it, they just don't create the directory. If people want some other directories, they can add them too in the way I have, or in a more convenient way to be developed. It also seems to me that adding it unconditionally (or perhaps, conditionally on its actually existing), in whatever file you consider appropriate, is the easiest way to resolve this bug. If someone has to add UI to Users and Groups, isn't that going to take much longer and be much more effort? [Bug 183543] Re: tali crashes
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 164804] Re: Gnome Login Error
I'm adding information here in case it may help in determining the cause of the problem: This morning one of our Samba networked Ubuntu computers had the error message: [QUOTE]Error: The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID: Gnome_fastuserswitchapplet. Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?[/QUOTE] The workstation is a plain vanilla Ubuntu 7.10 i386 install which has been working for about a month. No updates have been applied yet. The stock desktop is used. It is networked with Samba. Two users are installed on this workstation. One major network change was instituted last night -- we went from DHCP to static IPs. Systems were tested last night and the network was functional. This is a home network with a dialup connection, and we turn the network (workstations router and modem) off when not in use. A nautilus bookmark exists on the problem workstation for a Samba shared file folder on another workstation. When the workstation was started this morning, the routers and modem were turned off, as was the computer with the shared Samba file. The error message appeared twice after two hard reboots. It appeared about a minute after the desktop was up. A third attempt at booting was succesful and did not show the error message -- the router, modem, and shared folder workstation had been started BEFORE the reboot. I'm wondering whether this problem is related to STATIC configured networks which are unresponsive, or unconnected. I notice some additional evidence here (static IP, network non- functional, same error message): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=632755 -- Gnome Login Error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/164804 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gnome-applets in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 64064] Re: would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH
There are risks -- users can add in-path executables to the system, making it easier for an exploit to be leashed against the user. A malicious script can install a bunch of tools under similar names to existing commands (i.e. ks instead of ls) so that the next time the user types that on accident, something bad happens. Of course, if a program has been compromised enough to let this happen, then this should be the LEAST of your concerns ;-) I would personally like to see this configurable and not enabled by default, as it's not really standard practice on any distro currently and not everyone would like it. -- would be nice to add ~/bin to the default PATH https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/64064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 178032] Re: Add to Address Book kills Metacity it doesn't return
I can confirm this bug and I can reproduce it with Gutsy (including latest updates). However, I believe that gtk-window-decorator is actually crashing, not evolution or metacity. In fact, if the bug reporter has selected advanced effects from the Appearance tool, they are most likely running compiz instead of metacity. I will attempt to gather more information the next time this happens. Until then, I hope that narrowing this problem down to the correct process affected is helpful. -- Add to Address Book kills Metacity it doesn't return https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/178032 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
