Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 199756] Re: Clock Applet crashes GNOME when trying to add Wichita-McConnell AFB to locations
Sebastian, The word crash in the title may be misleading, I think. The precise symptom is that gnome panel and all its applets disappear, then reappear (and the new location is not added). There is no crash report in /var/crash. The automatic bug reporting tool is also not run. So I am not sure this is a crash, or otherwise, if it is then no crash report is generated. (The problem is consistently reproducible, however, crash or not.) [Bug 161787] Re: Gnome Sound Preferences help refers to a system bell, but it's called system beep.
Err... as a newbie to Ubuntu who wants to use the sound card, the lack of accurate documentation is a real turn-off. As well as the change from bell to beep (which is pretty trivial), there's also the issue of the completely new user interface on the general tab. A lot of the fields are not exactly self-explanatory (at least to a newbie). To be honest, assigning a low priority to documentation is self- defeating. Linux will never take off until this casual attitude is changed. Yes, I know that MS documentation help files are equally badly maintained, but there's so much larger a user base that bulletin boards help sites quickly fill up with fixes. And then there are books like Windows xxx Annoyances which help (albeit a year too late given the publication cycle). Linux appears to have none of this, only a community which, as soon as a difficult question is asked, goes rapidly silent. -- Gnome Sound Preferences help refers to a system bell, but it's called system beep. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161787 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome2-user-docs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 199245] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon - System: Hardy 32-bit, x86 Dell server hardware. Fully updated packages as of 06-Mar-2008. - I've set up Xvnc remote access since this is a server-room machine and I need to administer it from a remote workstation. (apt-get install vnc4server ; or apt-get install vncserver. Same problem with either package). Steps to reproduce. 1) Everything works fine logging in locally in the server room. 2) Set up Xvnc remote login via VNC (cmd line: Xvnc :1 -query localhost -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 16 -once -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc -DisconnectClients=0 -NeverShared passwordFile=/root/.vnc/passwd -extension XFIXES) 3) Run vncviewer from a remote desktop (vncviewer servername:1), GDM login screen comes up fine. Login. 4) The gnome-settings-daemon restarts over and over upon login, and eventually gives up with restarted too many times message. 5) Open a terminal window and start gnome-settings-daemon manually: gnome-settings-daemon 6) Open any other window, or close any other window. gnome-settings- daemon crashes with following error message: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 2686 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. ... This BadWindow crash in gnome-settings-daemon occurs every time you open or close a new window. I'm no pro at this but after following the problems with gnome-settings- daemon and the Xrandr extension, perhaps the Xvnc server is also not providing some feature that gnome-settings-daemon is apparently in need of? What other info can I provide that will help pinpoint this bug? ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: Incomplete -- gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/199245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
