I can also confirm, and here is a link to a thread with more info about
my experience with this bug:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=899590

I can also confirm that Compiz is not affected. Windows open the way
they should when I use Compiz.

Here is my setup:
Fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron i386
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
512MB RDRAM
Changed Visual Effects to None

Here is a video of the bug in action:

[Bug 278489] [NEW] vinagre local mouse pointer disappears

2008-10-05 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

When you first connect to a VNC session with vinagre, you have both a
'local' mouse pointer, which moves smoothly in concert with your mouse
movements (compare with xtightvnc where this local mouse pointer is a
circle rather than an arrow), and the 'remote' mouse pointer for the
remote computer, which lags behind the local pointer depending on the
bandwidth of the connection. This is all as expected.

But when you move the local mouse outside the window displaying the
remote computer (eg move the mouse into Vinagre's bookmarks column or
title bar) and then back into the window displaying the remote computer,
the 'local' mouse pointer vanishes.

This makes using vinagre quite frustrating because the 'lagging' mouse
pointer gives poor feedback and you continuously overshoot menus, etc.

Intrepid 8.10 kernel 2.7.26-5 amd64
vinagre 2.24.0-0ubuntu1

This also happens on the Hardy version.

[Bug 278550] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex amd64 beta. At boot: There is a problem with the configuration server. /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

2008-10-05 Thread ledenjes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gconf

Ever since I started to use Intrepid Ibex amd64 (I started off with
Alpha 3) on my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa1510 (AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile
Technology TL-52 1.6GHz; 2Gb RAM; ATI Radeon® Xpress 1100) I get this
message at boot: There is a problem with the configuration server.
/usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256.

I can only click Close to proceed to the Gnome gui environment. Once
the boot is complete there don't seem to be any major problems, although
the Gnome gui environment seems to be somewhat slow in reponsiveness.

At the moment my Ubuntu OS has been updated to kernel 2.6.27-4-generic
(Gnome 2.24; GCC version 4.3.2). The updates have not resolved this
issue, unfortunately.

[Bug 237401] Re: totem tries to allocate 4GB

2008-10-05 Thread mnemo
Here is the glib allocation code:

gpointer
g_malloc (gsize n_bytes)
{
  if (G_UNLIKELY (!g_mem_initialized))
g_mem_init_nomessage();
  if (G_LIKELY (n_bytes))
{
  gpointer mem;

  mem = glib_mem_vtable.malloc (n_bytes);
  if (mem)
return mem;

  g_error (%s: failed to allocate %G_GSIZE_FORMAT bytes,
   G_STRLOC, n_bytes);
}

  return NULL;
}

Basically, what happened was that the glib_mem_vtable.malloc() freaked
out about the huge size requested and as a response it returned NULL.
This in turn caused the program to call g_error() which printed the
error.

Re-running this scenario under gdb with a breakpoint on g_error and then
obtaining a backtrace would probably be interesting because the bug is
almost certainly in the calling code (possibly in totem). However, if
the reporter does not have a specific set of steps that can reproduce
this bug then further analysis is not possible. This bug should not be
re-opened unless a consistent repro is found.

[Bug 278503] [NEW] UPS not recognized by GNOME Power Manager

2008-10-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a ups battery for my desktop pc. The device is connected to a usb
port. In Windows Vista the ups gets recognized automatically and a
battery icon is displayed in the notification area. In Ubuntu there is
not a sign that the computer is protected by a ups and so I can not set
any power setting in case the power goes out and the battery is running
out of juice.

The manufacturer does provide a Linux application but I don't see the
need to install a 3th party application. Why can I not use the same
tools as if I was working with a laptop? The only thing I need to set is
to shut down the system when the battery is at a critical percentage.
This should all be possible to do in the Gnome Power manager but it only
displays the 'AC power' tab.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, Ubuntu gets its translations from the
translations portion of Launchpad

work on making Ubuntu more useful in their language. If you want to
change a translation in Ubuntu there is the right place.

[Bug 278299] Re: Intrepid: arrows in gnome menu?

2008-10-05 Thread Paul Broadhead
Thanks for the links Bernhard.

The first might well describe a genuine bug. It refers to the
top/bottom arrows that appear in menus when they are too long to fit
onto the screen; the reported behaviour is that the menu length is fine
but the arrows appear and you have to scroll up/down to see all the menu
entries. I'll have a hunt around to see if that bug had been reported
before.

The second refers to the small down arrow you get on the Menu Bar
panel applet icon. It is there I assume, to hint that the icon is
actually a menu but some folks obviously don't like it.

Again, I'm sorry if I misunderstand what you wrote, but neither of these
sound like what you reported.

What would you like to do with this bug report?

[Bug 278598] [NEW] cdrom/dvd names are not correct

2008-10-05 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

When I puts a cdrom/dvd in my macbook the name of the DVD is shown in
nautilus/open file dialogs/etc...

When I eject the cdrom the name of the cdrom disappears (all ok until now)
Then I put ANOTHER cdrom/dvd in the drive = The name of the first DVD appears
instead of the new one. This is until I reboot (or login/logout, didn't test)

Another strange effect:
When I enter a music cdrom in the drive it is even worse: It is displayed as
Audio CD, when I eject and enter another cdrom/dvd which is not an audio cd and
then double click on the Audio-CD icon (in Computer in nautilus) it says that
the cdrom drive is not an Audio CD and could not be mounted.
The Audio-CD should be replace by Cdrom-Drive when the drive is ejected.
(Cdrom-drive is the initial state when I start the computer with no cd/dvd in
the drive).

I'm using Intrepid

This is already longer than today, and I didn't found a similar bug
report, so I wonder if I'm the only one with this problem, or I can't
search.

[Bug 278597] [NEW] High pitch noise under kernel 2.6.27-4-generic

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

This is a continuation of bug #93067
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/93067). I have
continued to experience the high pitch electronic noise under Feisty,
Hardy and now Intrepid. Under Hardy, the noise was only present to a
small degree. Last night I upgraded to 8.10 Beta and the noise has
seemingly become louder.

The # echo 2 /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate work around
used to work for me under Feisty, but has not worked for some time since
this parameter was removed from recent kernel revisions(?). Are there
any new work arounds for this issue. Is there additional information
which I may provide to help in this situation.

[Bug 217997] Re: Incorrect icons displayed for mimetypes installed in hicolor theme only

2008-10-05 Thread Chris
@Peter: I agree that the current situation isn't great because hicolor
mimetype icons in fact never get shown. The proper thing to do would
probably be to display the custom mimetype icons when the default theme
is used and use the generic fallbacks when a custom theme is in use.

Regarding your reductio ad absurdum argument the correct behavior would
depend on whether we want to keep style or convey information. If we
want to keep the theme consistent the correct thing to do would be to
display all files as this icon - this may well be the author's intent.
However if we intend to convey information we could use the specific
hicolor theme icons. I think this decision would be best left to the
theme author, so the solution is to add a flag to the index.theme file,
let's call it InheritsMimeTypes, that would determine whether to use
hicolor mime icons if they are more specific. If your theme is
reasonably tango-like then you set it to true. If it's completely
different like Gartoon Redux or BlackWhite, you set it to false so the
style is consistent.

[Bug 278078] Re: The key repeat delay for the down-arrow left-arrow keys is longer than the other keys

2008-10-05 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
From the GNOME's bugzilla, a developer says:

I cannot reproduce the behaviour you describe, and in any case, key repeat
delay is a global X server setting. There is no way for us to define different
delays or different keys. So if anything, this is a bug in the X server.

I've tested then on Xfce4 and I got the same issue, so the problem is
not a GNOME problem.

Another way to test the existence of the issue:

1. Go to System-Preferences-Keyboard.
2. Go to Layouts tab.
3. Check Key presses repeat when key is held down chekbox.
4. Move the Delay rule to the very left (near to Short label).
5. Go to Accessibility tab.
6. Check Only accept long keypresses in Slow Keys.
7. Move the Delay rule of the Slow Keys section to the very left (near to
Short label).
8. Open a Terminal. Press and hold any printable key (say, for instance, the
d key). You can see the d char appearing repeatedly. Now, press and hold
the left-arrow key.

Expected behavior: The blinking cursor moves repeatedly to the left,
traveling all the d chars.

Actual behavior: The cursor moves ONLY ONE POSITION to the left, without
repetition.

You can check that the down-arrow key is affected with this bug, too.
However, the up-arrow key and the right-arrow key works as expected.

[Bug 29622] Re: Many web browsers not print the headers and footers.

2008-10-05 Thread Bruce Miller
I am running Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex beta with Firefox 3.0.3.

This bug is not only still valid, but Firefox 3.0 has introduced serious
regression.

To the best of my knowledge, *_all_* HP LaserJet printers (and I have
used many, going back to the original ~1986 model) have an unprintable
area 0.5 (12.7mm) across the top and bottom of all paper sizes and
0.25 (~6.4mm) along each side of all paper sizes (top, bottom and sides
as seen in portrait mode).

To get browser headers and footers to print reliably has always taken
tweaking of the printable area and margins/headers/footers. The Firefox
3 page setup and printer dialogs have removed all ability to alter these
settings.

This regression makes Firefox 3 on Linux close to useless for printing
Web pages. I am trying to eliminate Windows from my life and
considerably prefer Firefox to Konqueror. This regression therefore
represents a considerable setback.

[Bug 278709] [NEW] Rhythmbox stops playing new sounds from ices2

2008-10-05 Thread Steven
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Player: Rhythmbox 0.115
OS: Ubuntu 8.04

Problem description:
I have ices2 and icecast2 working. 4 ogg sounds are in my playlist and ices2
is streaming it. I use Rhythmbox radio feature to play to sounds. The first
song would play and Rhythmbox would stop playing the next song. So, when ever
there is a change of track or song, Rhythmbox seems to fail in handling the
event. I expect Rhythmbox to continues playing all songs from ices2 and since
ices2 is configured to loop the songs, Rhythmbox should play none stop.

[Bug 36189] Re: Applets do not scale well with changing resolution

2008-10-05 Thread elm
Here's a workaround. I did not test it very well. It keeps the objects
at the same position. Simple go the the directory
~/.gconf/apps/panel/applets/ and set the %gconf.xml to read-only after
setting the position. The Shutdown-Dialog-gconf.xml is located in
~/.gconf/apps/panel/objects/session_dialog_screen0/. To make the applets
stick to the right open gconf-editor goto
apps/panel/applets/appletOfChoice and set panel_right_stick to 1. To
order the applets from right to left set the position in gconf to 0 for
the one at the border and 1 for the next one and so on. E.g. position=0
for session_dialog, position=1 for clock, position=2 for mixer,
position=3 for notification-area.

[Bug 278503] Re: UPS not recognized by GNOME Power Manager

2008-10-05 Thread Chris Coulson
Right, HAL is showing no batteries, so this isn't a gnome-power-manager
bug. Re-assigning to the kernel for now.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot with the UPS
connected and attach the resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report.
3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.
4. Please run the command lsusb -v lsusb.log with the UPS connected and
attach the resulting file lsusb.log to the bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

2008-10-05 Thread Paul Broadhead
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in rhythmbox.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at

[Bug 278739] [NEW] Rhythmbox should propose to install python-coherence when activating UPnP/DLNA plugin

2008-10-05 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Public bug reported:

This is related to the (closed) bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/160592 .

The error message shown when trying to enable this plugin is not user
friendly. It doesn't tell the user what's missing and doesn't propose
the automatic installation of the missing packages.

Package kit or another mean could be used instead.
A first fix could be to tell the user the name of the package to be installed.

well.

As Mark says this has nothing to do with AWN and is an issue with the
Intrepid beta. There is a fix available in a PPA in the duplicate bug
which you can test however; it works for me.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 252795 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252795

Yes, the account has the privileges. I can launch shut down from the system
menu. Apparently, Ubuntu has split up ending sessions into two different
commands in Intrepid. The first does what the quit applet is now doing,
offers log off or switch user. The second offers to let the user shut down
or restart. Both of the options are available from the gnome system menu.
The awn quit applet brings up the first option. I'd like to edit it so that
it brings up the second.

I don't think this is a bug in the Quit applet. Could you make sure

 restart/shutdown?

If the account has the privileges, then I think it's a bug in Ubuntu's
 gnome-session.

Otherwise, I believe that your account is not configured the way you
 want it to be.

[Bug 278772] [NEW] Drag 'n' drop for the pathbar

2008-10-05 Thread chips
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Drag 'n' dropping files to the path bar should move them to the proper
location. This would make it easier to move files to parent folders.

Example: Consider I am in $HOME/foo/. It would be nice to move the file
$HOME/foo/bar directly to $HOME/bar simply dragging it onto $HOME button
at the pathbar. Currently we have either to open two windows, or to cut
and paste.
