[Bug 260918] Re: needed: libv4l and associated application patches (or gspca stopped working in 2.6.27)

2008-12-04 Thread Petar Velkovski
Are you sure it is only the libv4l package that has the problem? I can't
get /device/videoX at all. I have rried libv4l from
http://ppa.launchpad.net/lool/ubuntu, tried
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so ...

dmesg gives this:

[ 644.112142] gspca: probing 055f:c200
[ 644.120720] gspca: probe ok
[ 644.120964] gspca: probing 055f:c200
[ 644.606989] gspca: disconnect complete
.
Why is the camera probed twice?
Why after the second probing it is saying disconnect complete (and the web
camera is still conected to the computer)?
How come lsmod lists the module for the web camera present in memory after
saying it was disconnected?

it should be double checked if the mencoder is in sleeping state in the

cat /proc/2534/stat
or else seems that kernel doesn't write the status of the process correctly in

2008-12-04 Thread Gabriel de Perthuis
There is no switch for graphical or noninteractive installation of OOo
extensions:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=83448

Some extensions are OK, others will ask for a licence in the terminal.
You could associate the mimetype with this command:
sh -c yes yes | LANG=C unopkg add $PATH_TO_OXT
or maybe a command that runs unopkg add in a terminal.

[Bug 305126] [NEW] Resume ignored after auto-hibernate

2008-12-04 Thread Cybah
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

1) Description: Ubuntu 8.10
   Release: 8.10

2) gnome-power-manager:
 Installed: 2.24.0-0ubuntu8

3) I expected my laptop to resume/thaw following automatic hibernation.

4) I switched my laptop on and it booted normally, as if it never went
into hibernation (suspend to disc). I allowed the battery to discharge
and watched the popups appear to warn me that the computer would
hibernate within n minutes and eventually that the computer was going to
hibernate. It hibernated automatically and switched off. When I switched
it on again, the laptop didn't restore/thaw.

I checked /var/log/pm-suspend.log (attached) and can see entries for
the hibernate, yet nothing for resume.

I tested a manual hibernate and the laptop resumes without problems.

What can I do to help track down the problem?

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

Further information... I can't deterministically reproduce this bug.
Sometimes the readings are accurate, sometimes wrong. I tried
hibernate/resume, but the problem didn't reoccur. I tried a fresh boot

charging from AC. However, as I type this bug report, the readings have
returned to normal.

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2008-12-04 Thread Sesivany
I think the problem is that gnome-power-manager takes the value from the
battery. For example LiOn batteries tend to report lower times if they
were stressed by higher energy consumption for a short time. I think we
will get more accurate values if gnome-power-manager calculates the
remaining time from the remaining energy and the current consumption (or
weighted average of consumption values for 5, 10, 15 minutes while
lastest value has the highest weight).

[Bug 305126] Re: Resume ignored after auto-hibernate

2008-12-04 Thread Chris Coulson
This is unlikely to be a gnome-power-manager issue. Could you please run
dmesg dmesg.log after an attempt to resume, and then attach it to
this bug report, as it might give an idea what the problem is.

The chances are that the UUID for your swap partition changed at some
point since your initial install (perhaps you did a mkswap on it?), and
your initramfs hasn't been updated to point at the new UUID.

e-mail.
But Evolution can't set + mark, this system automatically set @mark.
This is the reason I can't receive e-mail.
When I click send/receive tab by Evolution. 'Smtp is complete' is displayed.
'pop' is shown 'Please wait' This word is displayed for ever. Then I click

[Bug 305135] Re: Ubuntu logs off randomly

2008-12-04 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. This isn't a GDM bug, but a X server bug instead. It seems Xorg
is crashing. Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /etc/X11/xorg.conf after this crash occurs.
Hopefully, the Xorg log will contain a backtrace.

[Bug 305144] [NEW] *for some URLs* opening a link in the terminal says, 'operator not supported'

2008-12-04 Thread Stuart Morrow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Opening some links with right-click - Open Link in gnome-terminal causes this
popup, with Could not open the address operation not supported
Here's the extra details, something to do with gconf keys:
Bad key or directory name: /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/: Key/directory may
not end with a slash '/'

Here is my /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http :
command: 'firefox %s',
enabled: True,
needs_terminal: False

But the weird and important thing is that I've only encountered this bug
with one URL so far.

Here is one URL for which right-click - Open Link gets this bug:
http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0003832
Here is one for which it doesn't:

both work at their native 1440x900 resolution.

They are Yuraku MW9KBA 19 Widescreen monitors.

Attached is the working xorg.conf file. (copy o working original)

[Bug 305147] [NEW] [jaunty] gnome-panel cannot Adjust Date Time

2008-12-04 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If I right click on the gnome-panel clock, and select 'Adjust Date
Time', then click 'Set System Time', I am prompted for authorization.
After entering my password, the authorization dialog goes away, but
'time-admin' is not launched. I see this in ~/.xsession-errors:

current dist not found in meta-release file
** (gnome-panel:7723): DEBUG: helper refused; returned
polkit_result='auth_self_keep_always -- (action, result)' and
polkit_action='org.gnome.clockapplet.mechanism.settime'
checking for valid crashreport now

If I launch 'time-admin' from a terminal (without sudo), and click
'Unlock', I am again prompted for authorization, but time-admin is
launched.

The authorization dialogs are different though: time-admin from a
terminal has the 'Select User' drop down box, but the gnome-panel one
does not. Also, after attempting the gnome-panel 'Set System Time' once,
subsequent attempts yield no authorization dialog, but still does not
launch time-admin.

if gtk+-demo is affected then this is not a firefox, gnome-terminal, or

2008-12-04 Thread launcspad

To remake the problem, try this. (Evolution 2.24.2, Ubuntu 8.10.)

1. Compose a new html mail and insert a huge text. (I tried with the inserted

2. Add html atachments. (I tried with the attached ones, with all, no archived,
just the pure files.)
3. Send the mail.

Anecdotally I think I can say that the delay between typing Ctrl-A and
the messages in the folder being highlighted is less than it was, but
there is still a noticeable delay. The delay though is fairly clearly
dependent on the number of messages in the folder.

It remains the case that if you type Ctrl-A, Ctrl-D, Ctrl-E a lot as I
do, it is incredibly easy to hit the Ctrl-D before the Ctrl-A has caused
all the items in the folder to be highlighted, which then leads to the
Ctrl-D and Ctrl-E being lost. It seems that there is (actually always
has been) a loss of typed input when an action is being undertaken.

[Bug 259385] Re: Intrepid Compiz hangs on login for i830MG, i845, and i945GM video cards

2008-12-04 Thread Reed
It sounds like you may be experiencing a different issue. On Ubuntu
8.10, at least, the intel driver works fine for all chipsets EXCEPT the
three mentioned above. On those three, once compiz is disabled, the
intel driver works fine again.

Work appears to be ongoing regarding finding a fix for running compiz on
these specific problematic cards.

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-12-04 Thread Jeff Powell
Max, good question. Right now, on the computer in question, I see only
the daemon. Not the wrapper. What I saw back in mid-November (when I
first tried your workaround) I can't say. I probably had only the
daemon itself running at that time as well, but who knows.

8.10 hasn't been nearly stable enough for me to avoid reboots in the
interim. At least 2 kernel updates and 3 or 4 issues of a black screen
in X (when coming back after the screen saver has been invoked) that
won't go away and require a reboot, etc. I wish my Ubuntu experience had
been a smooth one, but it's been really rocky. I've got other issues as
well that I won't bother to detail here.

Anyway, to answer you, it appears the keyring is running, which is
apparently the right thing, so disregard my comment.

[Bug 305226] [NEW] GtkExpander reports incorrect name to accessibility tools

2008-12-04 Thread Pete Johanson
Public bug reported:

This is a request to add the fix from GNOME bug #353088
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353088) to the Intrepid gtk+
package. Without this fix, on Intrepid, GtkExpander widgets that
normally would be named something like Options now have a name of
_Options if there was a mnemonic of O to toggle the GtkExpander.

This has broken our automated GUI tests via Strongwind

names are now reported.

[Bug 305230] [NEW] SSL certificate for Ekiga.net is self signed, prevents registration

2008-12-04 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

Using Intrepid 8.10.

When using Ekiga for the first time, if the configuration assistant is
used it proposes registering to Ekiga.net in the third step.

The get an ekiga.net SIP account opens Firefox which in turn reports
this error:

www.ekiga.net uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.
(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

This doesn't trigger any mechanism to bypass the error, thus preventing
registration.

Yes I know how to add an exception for an invalid cert, but this really
should not be a site where self-signed certificates are used. the
required procedure to bypass the error is not trivial to new users, and
does not help trusting Ekiga as an application or as a service.

Please either remove this link and option from the assistant or buy a
valid SSL certificate.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nautilus

Using hardy beta, when I browse with nautilus other machines in an Active
Directory (ADS) network, some of them do not show their shared folders.
The ADS integration of the hardy box was done using winbind, kerberos and PAM
 libraries, essentially as described here:
 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto
The network contains mostly windows clients, but also several linux boxes,
which were joined to the ADS domain with the command: 'net ads join'.
Machines running windows XP, windows 2003 and samba show '0 objects' in
nautilus, but after inserting the complete path (eg.: smb://server/share) the
folders can be accessed after the password prompt.
Machines running windows 2000 show their folders regularly.

Here is a detailed description of what happens:

 Case 1
 -
Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running ubuntu-gutsy server.

 In a terminal window:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ smbclient -L gutsy-server
 Password: (password inserted here)
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a]
  Sharename Type Comment
  - ---
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (gutsy-server (Samba 3.0.26a, Ubuntu))
  share Disk gutsy-server_share
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a]

 In Nautilus:

Open Network -- Double-click on the 'LAB' icon (Domain) -- All machines are
 displayed;
Double-click on the 'gutsy-server' icon -- after a while, Nautilus returns
 '0 objects', without asking for a password;
Insert the full address (smb://gutsy-server/share) -- a password is
requested and the share content is displayed.

 Case 2
 -
Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running Windows XP

 In a terminal window:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ smbclient -L XP-ACQ
 Password: (password inserted here)
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
  Sharename Type Comment
  - ---
  IPC$ IPC Remote IPC
  Data Disk
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

 In Nautilus:

Same behaviour as in case 1.
 smb://XP-ACQ -- '0 objects';
smb://XP-ACQ/Data -- content displayed after password.

 Case 3
 -
Browsing from hardy-beta a machine running Windows 2000

 In a terminal window:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ smbclient -L TF-2000
 Password: (password inserted here)
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
  Sharename Type Comment
  - ---
  IPC$ IPC Remote IPC
  Data Disk
 Domain=[LAB] OS=[Windows 5.0] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]

 In Nautilus:

Open Network -- Double-click on the 'LAB' icon (Domain) -- All machines are
 displayed;
Double-click on the 'TF-2000' icon -- All the shared folders are displayed,
 without asking for a password;
Double-click on the 'Data' folder icon -- a password is requested and the
 content is displayed.
(This is the correct and the expected behaviour).

Using ubuntu-gutsy boxes, with exactly the same samba configuration
(smb.conf), to browse the same machines I never observed Nautilus return '0
objects' as in case 1 and 2.
Such a behaviour in hardy will make a normal user think that browsing an ADS
network does not work at all.

[Bug 164591] Re: gimp windows steal focus on start

2008-12-04 Thread Roman Polach
Seems that it is related more to compiz than gimp,
because it cannot be reproduced with metacity.

So for Gimp this should stay invalid, but it should be valid for
compiz..

** Also affects: compiz
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gimp (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = New

** Summary changed:

- gimp windows steal focus on start
+ gimp windows steal focus on start with compiz

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gimp

- In gutsy, gimp windows steal focus on start.
+ In Intrepid, gimp windows steal focus on start.
Most of gnome applications behave correctly: when they
start a bit longer and user switch to other window/application,
then newly launched applications open on background.
But this is not the case of this application.

- Note: This happen both using compiz or metacity
+ This happen only using compiz (not happen with metacity)
+ (in Gutsy I saw it also with metacity, but this fact is probably irrelevant
now)

[Bug 210379] Re: should not list mounts that the user doesn't have permission to use

[Bug 304955] Re: gnome-display-properties applies resolution changes without a timeout box

2008-12-04 Thread Adam Buchbinder
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Run gnome-display-properties. Pick a different resolution. Click
  apply.

What I expected: I expected a confirmation dialog with a countdown to
appear, saying that I should click OK if my monitor was displaying the
resolution. (More accurately, since the resolution I picked was out of
range, I expected that my monitor would snap back to the old resolution
  eventually.)

What happened: My monitor proceeded to display the Invalid Resolution
message for quite some time. I did a CTRL-ALT-Backspace, and tried to
log back in, to discover that the invalid resolution was now part of my
user profile, making my account nigh-unusable.

Compounding this problem was the fact that failsafe mode doesn't reset
resolution changes; I ended up creating another user account from the
- xterm-only account (since CTRL-ALT-n doesn't switch to a plain tty any
- more), logging in there, and trying to find any reference to ways to
- change the mysterious setting which wasn't in .gnome or .gconf and
- wasn't affected by logging in as failsafe, but *was* affected by logging
- in as terminal only.
+ xterm-only login, logging in there, and trying to find any reference to
+ ways to change the mysterious setting which wasn't in .gnome or .gconf
+ and wasn't affected by logging in as failsafe, but *was* affected by
+ logging in as terminal only.

(For some reason, I found a forum post rather than
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution, but eventually I deleted
.config/monitors.xml. In any case, this is hardly bulletproof, and I'll
file a bug on whatever makes failsafe configurations as soon as I find
out what component it is. Aren't we supposed to have bullet-proof X?)

I don't think this is a dupe of bug 197673, since that was about randr
changes, while this is just about screen-resolution changes. If it *is*
a dupe, please just reopen that one.

Glad it's fixed, but bugs in Hotmail should be filed at Microsoft.

[Bug 305257] Re: Nautilus crashes when starting without Metacity

2008-12-04 Thread A. Walton
Thank you for reporting. Can you please clarify what you mean by not
starting? Nautilus is already running if you are able to open folders
on your desktop (as Nautilus is generally responsible for drawing the
desktop). If it is crashing, can you get a backtrace of the crash? You
can find the procedure for this here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace

[Bug 305059] Re: crash when clicking youtube links in the search window

2008-12-04 Thread goto
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
