[Bug 373096] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
The bug gets ever more confusing: while logging this information, I had
the expected bahavior (for the first time ever, I think). The monitor
went a little darker after unplugging, and I could turn it up to maximum
brightness using the hotkeys. I'll rerecord that information trying to
reproduce the buggy behavior

[Bug 373096] Re: [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
Actually, it is not always switching to the "cyclic mode". This time,
the screen went black right after unplugging, and I could bring it with
the hotkeys to a level at which it was barely usable in a completely
dark room. However, it did not become brighter by itself this time, as
described above. Here is the output of lshal -m during unplugging, using
the hotkeys to see at least a little bit on the screen and replugging.

[Bug 373096] [NEW] [jaunty] screen brightness level on battery power unsteady and too dark

2009-05-06 Thread Uwe Schilling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since I updated to from hardy to jaunty, the behavior of the screen
brightness on battery power is strange. On unplugging, the overall
brightness goes down (expected), but cannot be brought up to the level
without battery power (unexpected). I can still use the hotkeys to
adjust the brightness, but the intervall is in a lower range than on AC
power. Furthermore, with a period of about one minute, the brightness
goes down even further, bringing it the brightness to a level, where it
is impossible to work, even with the brightness set to maximum. In the
dark periods, the minimum setting seems to turn off the backlight
completely, while maximum is a bit brighter, but still unusable. Then
after about a minute it goes back to the brightness of "only some levels
below AC power, but usable", after a minute dark again and so on.

A similar behavior is described in two bugs: For one bug 284550.
However, in contrast to that report, I have the problem only when
running on battery power. Additionally, it says in that bug report that
a fix was released in gnome 2.24.4, but I still have the problem working
in gnome 2.26.1. Bug 325789 describes the same behavior also only on
battery power, but it claims that it doesn't occur any more in jaunty.
Therefore, I decided to file a new bug report.

I am working on a Samsung X20 with intel graphics chipset.

btw.: how do I link other bugs?

[Bug 373074] [NEW] yahoo.com.au left open causes the browser to slow the system

2009-05-06 Thread Mat
Public bug reported:

Opening the page and leaving it open for a while causes the browser to
slow the system.

The CPU usage and memory usage go right up and the system becomes less
responsive.
This is most noticeable after leaving it open over night. (I'm not sure how
many hours is minimally required.)

I have run valgrind and the usually suspect of memory leaks are
possible.

There is flash on this page.

find a "report bug" link), which is the page that is failing to load.

[Bug 239413] Re: Four steps of brightness changing after pressing a brightness key only once

Thinkpad T42. The brightness is switched down by gpm 3 or 4 steps, but
only 2 steps up. This happens in AC mode and on battery, every few
minutes the user has to lighten up the display. The osd shows the step
when gpm control the backlight down. Saves lot of energy, but is
extremly annoying. Thanks for tips to disable this completely.

Binary package hint: gimp

Ubuntu 9.10

everytime I want to select something in The Gimp, it creates in the selection a
light brown ubuntubrown square covering up the selection. Normally this
shouldn't appear and it is really annoying.
It is really bad if you want to do serious image-editing or drawing with The
Gimp.
I'm using a X360 ATI Video Card, 1.5 GB RAM, 2.97GHZ P4 CPU. I use a fresh
install and even the problem occurs with the live CD.
See screenshot added.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it. We appreciate the
difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise
problems you are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

For reference, backing up Evolution involves more than just saving the

[Bug 322604] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 Password Bug

2009-05-06 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug:

Today while I was entering my password at my Ubuntu 8.10 login desktop,
by mistake I entered one character more than the actual password.
Everything was working fine. I noticed this was also the case when using
administrative applications in 'System -> Administration'. It also
exists for 'sudo' (root user) commands used in the terminal.

The login is successful whenever password is entered correctly upto
eight characters (or less for smaller passwords), irrespective of length
of password.

Suppose if my password is 'calculator'

Entering following passwords will give successful login:

1. calculater
2. calculatexor
3. calculat

Many other combinations are possible. The only condition is that the
password should correct upto eight characters or less for smaller
password.

In gnome-network-properties, when one tries to change from proxy
settings to direct internet connection, it requires Ubuntu to restart
(not just reset the X's), the button to reset (the connection settings)
doesn't work. It should, as in other versions of Ubuntu, apply the
changes inmediately as to start a working connection with a proxy or
viceversa, without the need for restart.

Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

I find this to be a minor bug, considered for a functionality
improvement.

[Bug 330383] Re: MTP is preferred over UMS/MSC

2009-05-06 Thread Mauricio Barragan
I tried Nicholas' workaround and it seem to work. Now my Walkman its
recognized as MSC and I can browse and add files with no problems. Now I
theres another problem. Any program (mtp-detect, Rhythmbox, Gnomad2)
that tries to connect via MTP fails. This wouldn't be a problem but the
device only handles playlists with the MTP protocol so, despite I can
add music via MSC, there is no way to create or edit playlists. This is
only affecting Ubuntu (or Gnome maybe) because I try it on a machine
running openSUSE and KDE 4.2 and the device mounts as MSC but when a MTP
application tries to connect it switches to MTP and the application
works fine

[Bug 361799] Re: gnome-screensaver does not blank screen in Jaunty beta

2009-05-06 Thread PhilippeDePass
I have also noticed this behaviour in the official Jaunty release (not
beta).

Steps to reproduce:

1) System -> Preferences -> Screensaver
2) Regard computer as idle after 1 minute
3) Activate screensaver when computer is idle
4) Choose "Blank Screen" screensaver
5) Close, and leave the computer alone for 1 minute

Behaviour:

After 1 minute, the screen fades. Once fully faded, the desktop comes
back, as if "something" is waking it up. I have unplugged all input
devices (keyboard, mouse, USB wireless card).

Expected behaviour:

Screensaver should activate until human returns and engages the computer
again.

After a log off and log on, the screen saver works (for a while). Differential
cause still unknown.

2009-05-06 Thread Michal Suchanek
OK, here pointing at Applications shows the Firefox tooltip .. because
clicking Applications starts Firefox (or Evolution or Help depending on
the exact place clicked).

[Bug 362090] Re: cursor doesn't behave properly when hovering over toolbar

2009-05-06 Thread David Nielsen
I am seeing this as well, but only when utilizing the proprietary nvidia
driver. Using nv it is perfectly fine. Is that the case for you?

[Bug 372705] Re: nautilus doesn't update view after file/directory creation

2009-05-06 Thread Konrad Paumann
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 371219 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371219

I don't really think this is a duplicate. Difference is that on my system
gvfs-monitor-dir _doesn't_ recognize any activity (in contrast to the other bug
report where gvfs-monitor-dir _does_ recognize activity)!
Why do you think that this is a duplicate? What can I do to help debug the
problem?
