[Bug 452642] [NEW] The '"x" is an executable text file' dialogue is not user friendly
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I originally raised this as an idea on the brainstorm, but was told it should be reported as a bug by the brainstorm admin (the brainstorm is here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21745/). When you click on an executable text file, such as a script to which you've just made a change which you want to test, a dialogue appears asking if you want to open it, run it, run it in a terminal, or cancel. I think this dialogue is severely flawed. Why aren't the two run buttons next to each other? Why isn't cancel on the far left where it usually is? What if I want to edit the file instead of displaying it (I know the Display button /actually/ opens it for editing, but it doesn't say that)? Why can't I tell it to stop asking me every time I click on the file, if I always want to do the same thing? And why is the dialogue so cluttered? My solution is as follows: - Move Cancel to the far left, because that's where we've come to expect it to be - Rename the Display button Display/Edit, because that's what it's for - Get rid of the Run in Terminal option, but put a "Run in Terminal" tick box under the "Run" button, because the dialogue is cluttered - Add a "Remember my Choice" tick box It occurs to me that this is probably trivial to fix - could it be a paper-cut? I don't know if you could say it effects lots of users, but it does happen on any executable file. I know that the last thing my mum wants to see when she clicks an executable file is a scary technical sounding dialogue - if we could simplify it (by reducing the number of buttons) and give her a remember my choice option so that she doesn't get bothered with it every time, she'd be a lot happier. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- The '"x" is an executable text file' dialogue is not user friendly https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/452642 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken
Maybe the bug you encountered is different from mine, because in my case evince failed silently to print, and now it works again. I never had an error message (but the printer made its caracteristic "heating noise" each time, as it probably received something, just didn't know how to deal with). [Bug 444881] Re: [Karmic] Battery monitor applet doesn't show battery remaining time
I can confirm this bug on an HP Mini 1035nr netbook. Given our rather different bits of hardware, it strikes me as reasonably possible that it affects a larger selection of HP computers. Something particularly interesting to note is that the lack of 'time remaining' info means that gnome-power-manager doesn't seem to perform any action for low battery. It gives a warning, but doesn't enter sleep mode; it just lets the battery drain and perform a hard shutdown. (Which can't be good. It's partly a bug in gnome-power-manager, which should NOT rely on time remaining alone to decide when to do a safe shutdown, but it definitely makes this bug more significant). -- [Karmic] Battery monitor applet doesn't show battery remaining time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Another quick thought are the words "zip" "zipped" "unzip" etc patented but Winzip in some way? so to use these words as a generic term for all compression, as apposed to just referring to a zip file (compressed in zip format etc), may mean its possible for Ubuntu to be sued for patent\brand usage etc (I'm not a lawyer but yeah that bollocks stuff). Re: [Bug 285998] Re: Deleting ~/Templates and rebooting makes a change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
Hello Sebastien. I don't understand why the description of the bug seems unclear to you, but I explain again (actually I think this bug is already fixed, but check me since I am not sure): After deleting the auto-generated folders in the user home directory like : Templates, Videos, Pictures, Documents (not sure about the exact names), restarting the computer and recreating them, the ubuntu system won't recognise them, especially the Templates folder as the folders to look up for templates and other files... The solution for this bug, is to edit the ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file and modify the directories to match the formerly deleted directories. [Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
Interesting Paper Cut I just thought I would add something in regards to the "windows" world that is mentioned throughout I think its slightly incorrect to think of the "Send To --> Compressed (zipped) folder" dialog as universally used under windows. Ever since zip files were handled by XP released in 2002-2003, I still run across people who still think they need to install Winzip\Winrar or whatever app to create\open zip files. It is not very well advertised in the OS and people are most still using windows as if its windows 98 and nothing has changed. eg still need Winzip (shareware woot!) installed.. still need Nero installed to create a simple data CD So using this as the "standard" for how things should be implemented is not entirely correct. I do think the windows way is more seamless than a separate application though and ill usually just install 7zip on windows (for myself and other users) to handle other archive formats (and more advanced zip file creation) but leave windows as the associated app for zip and cab files. Still how it is implemented at the moment in Ubuntu is great. I do think there should be less abstraction involved with dealing with archive files (eg make them look like a folder with all the same operations as mentioned above) BUT they still need to be recognized as files to the user and it needs to be obvious that they are archive files so the user can make decisions based on that on the topic at hand.. I think "Compress file\s..." is only slightly better than "Create Archive". Most people would think that one "zip file" will be created when clicking this... I doubt a majority of people will think if they click this they will create many compressed files or something silly like that -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 452643] [NEW] restart to use gstreamer codec
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem When trying to play a media file in totem, you sometimes have to get a codec to play it. For example, an RM (realmedia) file needs gstreamer- ugly. Restarting totem solves the problem - the files play fine. Totem needs to either restart itself or play the file without having to restart. [Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)
I suspect the bug report was either not fully read or fully understood by David S, otherwise he would not have written that - he must have thought I was wanting to eliminate the find as you type feature, which is not the case at all. I know the Save dialog is not something that developers use very frequently, but anyone that ever tries to get real-life knowledge workers to use OpenOffice on any Gnome-using OS will run into this complaint very quickly (I know). Saving a new document is just too hard. By the way, KDE (Qt) does this better too; choose a folder where you want to save your document and a SINGLE tab takes you back to the file name entry field (just like on Windows and Mac OS). Despite all being very different, 3 of the top 4 desktop GUIs allow you to jump from the folder selection space to the file name entry field with a SINGLE push of the tab key - maybe that's a hint that Gnome is doing it wrong. -- Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/387957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 446395] Re: Screen lock unlocks after 5 wrong attempts
This seems to be because gnome-screensaver-dialog exits after the 5th failed attempt, whilst the main gnome-screensaver process is still shaking the dialog to indicate an auth failure. I've ran it through xtrace which shows that gnome-screensaver tries to do some X calls on the gnome-screensaver-dialog window after it was destroyed. I also rebuilt gnome-screensaver with some extra debug statements which show that gnome-screensaver-dialog exits whilst the dialog is being shaken. This happens every time, but it just seems to be that you need to be unlucky with the timing to get it to crash. Anyway, the current implementation is not robust and is race-prone, so I will work on fixing that now. ** Changed in: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu Karmic) Status: Triaged => In Progress -- Screen lock unlocks after 5 wrong attempts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446395 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 451841] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in g_simple_async_result_complete()
Elegant... Will try it and post the log. I do not program C yet so I have no clue how and if this will be helpful but according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind , this is what I have to do next if I see a segfault. I hope it helps. I could also submit a bugreport upstream. Is it possible to patch this before release if there is enough useful information? -- gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in g_simple_async_result_complete() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/451841 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

OK.
