[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-12-13 Thread er...@hamburg
If ubuntu wont fix that, we need a system service that set the gconf on
every bootup. It occurs on all 3 machines here and my collegues at work
are unhappy by this noise. Together with the broken eee volume keys this
give full power drumsound at boot. Di i have to glue the speakers?

2009-12-13 Thread Alex K
I'm in favor of the solution presented by post #7. The solution is not

[Bug 496134] [NEW] f-spot printing missing image icon instead of actual image

2009-12-13 Thread ricardisimo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

Although bug #450456 looks like it might be similar, I couldn't tell
from the description.

If I try to print (or view print preview) instead of the image I have
selected, I get the image missing icon instead (it looks like it's
probably the one from the Oxygen theme set, under status), the red
circle with the diagonal red bar, a lá Ghostbusters. I tried altering
various printer settings to see if for some bizarre reason it was CUPS
or HPLIP instead of F-Spot, but no.

I'm on Ubuntu Koala, fully updated to the best of my knowledge; F-Spot
version 0.6.1.5. My printer is an HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One, which
used to print everything just fine. Not a great printer by any stretch
of the imagination, but it certainly worked OK.

2009-12-13 Thread norbert
Ekiga echo test is not playing back the sound. No PC to PC connection with
sound is possible, also not possible to make a sensufl PC to telephone
connection because no sound is played.
System plays otherwise sound normally: system sounds, rhythmbox or any other

Cam is displayed in the echo test, microphone is not tested because sound does
not work. microphone and soundsystem are working under system check test for
audio.
In the attached file is the system configuration: Shortly: I am using Ubuntu

Yes,it's due to the version of driver.
I met with the same problem that the xorg always consumes CPU nearby 100% when

I tried other versions, such as 185 or 190 ,and found the CPU usage dropped

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-12-13 Thread gw0
Well, I see two better options than physically doing something to the
speakers:

1. Use another display/login manager. There are plenty of other ones out
there, gdm is just happens to be the default for Gnome... Actually
that's exactly what GNU/Linux is all about - choice - because no one
forces you to use crappy software (what the default Ubuntu installation
is becoming). So just remove or somehow disable the default packages and
install the good ones.

2. Create a simple package that inserts a hook in apt-get post-
installation phase for setting the above gconf values (disabling sound).

[Bug 492128] Re: Gnometris sound very quiet.

2009-12-13 Thread Computa_mike
I tried installing gnome ALSA mixer but that doesn't seem to help - All
my levels are fine - it's more a relative volume - if i'm playing audio
and playing gnometris the audio is louder than the effects. I think
this is more likely related to gnometris not supporting Pulse Audio. I
would suggest creating a pulse audio connection or object at when
gnometris starts? This way the relative volume can be set.

I wonder if it's something simple to achieve? I might even have a look
at the source...

I don't know how to debug the problem. Please help.

Thank you very much.

My statement was based just on my experience during Karmic cycle.
I trust the package managers not to change such global setting as
sound mute/unmute.

[Bug 258083] Re: F-Spot - Error connecting to camera. Could not lock the device

2009-12-13 Thread DrH
Thanks for the reply Brian.

Yes...Nautilus is launched when I click on Select Folders from the
drop down list. I was mistaken.

Interestingly, I receive a third (3rd) error message when I click on
NIKON DSC COOLPIX P5100-PTP

Could not mount NIKON DSC COOLPIX P5100-PTP
Error initializing camera: -110: I/O in progress

The steps were.

1. Connect camera (Nikon P5100) via USB to the laptop
2. Turn on the camera
3. When prompted, choose to launch F-Spot
4. Close out error described above
5. Click on Select Folders from drop down window of Import dialog window
6. Click on NIKON DSC COOLPIX P5100-PTP from the Nautilux Places pane.

Error appears.

Although mounted, Nautilus will not open the camera in browse mode,
which probably makes sense due to PTP mode.

I do a find command for the f-spot log file, but it isn't to be found.

[Bug 232469] Re: wget does not use network proxy in some cases

2009-12-13 Thread gpk
Well, it still doesn't work in karmic, despite all the discussion of
whose problem it is.Flashplugin-nonfree still does this:

Setting up flashplugin-installer (10.0.42.34ubuntu0.9.10.1) ...
Downloading...
--2009-12-13 12:39:09--
http://archive.canonical.com/pool/partner/a/adobe-flashplugin/adobe-flashplugin_10.0.42.34.orig.tar.gz
Resolving archive.canonical.com... 91.189.90.142
Connecting to archive.canonical.com|91.189.90.142|:80... failed: Connection
timed out.
Retrying.

And /etc/apt/apt.conf contains this:

Acquire::http::Proxy http://192.168.2.1:8113/;;

Look, suppose the problem is really wget's problem. OK? Then why
can't flashplugin-nonfree solve this mess by simply passing a -p flag
to wget? Then, when (and if) the wget people get off their collective
a***es (Hah, British!) it will continue to work, and the '-p' flag could
eventually be removed.

Not my problem... it's their problem... sheesh!

There is a well-known idea in designing network protocols: anything you
produce should adhere strictly to the standard, but you should accept
small unambiguous deviations from the standard. The same should apply
to packages. They should do the right thing, but not necessarily
depend on other packages being perfect.

[Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-12-13 Thread Jakob Unterwurzacher
** Description changed:

  ==
  WORKAROUNDS
  ==
+ NOTE: These workarounds disable the system ready sound (the drums). They
will not disable the successful login and logout sounds. Go to Settings -
Sounds and set the sound theme to no sounds to disable these.
+
  1) Disable all sounds for the login screen via gconf
  $ sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool
false

  -OR-

  2) Rename the system-ready.ogg sound file
  $ sudo mv -v /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/system-ready.ogg
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/system-ready.ogg.DISABLED

  ==
  BUG
  ==
When you log into Karmic using a Gnome session, you get a drum sound. There
are many situations where you need a silent boot process, but it appears that
this is impossible under Karmic.

In Jaunty and previous, you could configure gdm to log you in silently.
This configuration has been removed from Karmic. Even opening Sound
Preferences and choosing No sounds for Sound theme or disabling
window and button sounds does not prevent the login sound from
  occurring.

Users must have the ability to login silently.

[Bug 386309] Re: Brasero gives Unknown Error

2009-12-13 Thread DaniGRF
Same problem here, on ubuntu karmic 32 bit. I can't burn anything on dvd-r
discs. I tried almost everything with brasero 2.28.2, but it continue to give
me unknown error, I'll post the log in this message. No problem with writers
and media, because I tried to burn from a windows partition and it worked well.
I tried too look over the internet and i found different people with similar
problems, but I haven't found a working solution.
Gnomebaker doesn't work to, and honestly I don't want to install k3b and all
its kde dependencies, so I hope to get Brasero to work.

[Bug 495430] Re: Evince fails in printing pdf document

2009-12-13 Thread Christian Mondrup
As manager of the sheet music archive referenced in this bug report I've
asked the contributor to provide an alternative version of the file
giving rise to the report. I've renamed the file in question to http
://icking-music-archive.org/scores/banchieri/BanchieriI-Recorders-Score-
unembedded.pdf. The file now present as http://icking-music-
archive.org/scores/banchieri/BanchieriI-Recorders-Score.pdf has all
fonts embedded. As I expected Evince prints the new pdf file with no
problems. On the background of this experience I'd expect Evince to (try
to) print a file with unembedded fonts replacing with alternative
fonts. I guess that's the strategy of Adobe Reader. If Evince for some
reason can't complete the printing then it should explain that to the
user through a reasonable error message.

2009-12-13 Thread zasq
Strange thing is that, if you burn the data or even an iso-image out of
the filemanager nautilus, everything works fine - even with DVD-RW. And
nautilus uses brasero to burn data to cd or dvd. But if you go directly
to brasero you get the unknown error...

[Bug 472717] Re: Laptop sleeps when plugged in, hibernates when unplugged

2009-12-13 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in gnome-power-manager.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 472717]

2009-12-13 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 472717

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 496214] [NEW] gnome-system-monitor and notification area not readable without compiz

2009-12-13 Thread mistr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

The first time I noticed that bug was during the pop-ups of the
notifier (connected to network, etc.). The attached file shows what
that looks like.

I get a similar pattern when I try to open the gnome-system-monitor.

When I switch to the lowest compiz setting in gnome (normal), these
windows show the correct content.

Other programs that I normally use, don't have these problems. As a
matter of fact, I only realized the problem with the system-monitor when
I tried to get the process id to report this bug. And as I don't know
which package the notification area belongs to, I file it against the
gnome-system-monitor, even though a notification area that is not
readable is more important (IMHO).

I can reproduce the bug on a freshly installed Karmic system, on the
Karmic i386 Live CD and on todays build of the Lucid Live CD.

Karmic:
I tried xorg-edgers - same problem.

Lucid;
The dsplay on the Lucid build looks weird even with compiz, but at least the
text is readable. When switchin the visual effects off, I again get some kind
of pattern.

The laptop I'm running is a few years old and uses an ATI radeon card
(r100 driver).

Status in File Roller: New
Status in “file-roller” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

Bug description:
Binary package hint: file-roller

I've got an email acting as a mailing list notice about spam outgoing from
my account.
The attachment.zip contained a file named:

attachment.txt ...spaces... .exe

Which was rendered as attachment.txt ... in File Roller.
The ellipsis is almost unnoticable and people can accidentally forward it to
someone on Windows or so.

I suggest to trim the non-printable characters to a limited width, eg. max
20 px ( / max 4 spaces).

Thanks for consideration.

[Bug 496253] [NEW] default keyring does not get unlocked at login

2009-12-13 Thread Cris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Hi,

on a new Karmic installation, suddenly my default keyring does not get
automatically unlocked when logging in.
Thus I get an annoying popup window asking me to insert the password the first
time an application tries to access the keyring.

1. I've not changed my passwords
2. my login password is the same as the default keyring one
3. I've already tried to delete my ./gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring and
recreate
a new one without any luck

It just seems like the magic with pam_gnome_keyring isn't working
anymore ...

Any help would be appreciated.

[Bug 496106] Re: [lucid] opening a chat window requires a triple-click

2009-12-13 Thread Matt Drake
the protocol doesn't matter, this happens on the contact list

however, i figured out some interesting behavior that i didn't notice until now:
- when empathy starts, you are able to launch chats by double clicking on
contacts
- highlight a contact using a single click. double clicking on a contact should
now do nothing. when it's in this state, there's two things you can do:
  - triple click a contact. this will open a chat window. it will also
restore the expected double click behavior
  - single click another contact. the expected double click behavior is
restored.

so it seems single clicking on contacts puts empathy in some weird state
that requires another single click to be returned back to a normal
state. i guessing the triple click gets translated into a single click
followed by double click, so that's why it has the same behavior as
such.

if you can reproduce this, i'll modify the title and the summary
