Re: [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Its would be a great solution but i think that its a solution that requires a lot of work, and would be incompatible with other distributions. Somebody knows the internal structure of XServer to say if i am in a error? 2010/5/24 J Bruni joaohbr...@yahoo.com.br Wondering aloud If the application that owns the clipboard provides its contents (unavailable once it is closed)... What if we always make Xserver itself be this application (the owner of the contents), and thus always serve its contents (always available!) i.e., when the user copies (CTRL+C) or cuts (CTRL+V) instead of stopping at the point where the current application is flagged as owner... just go ahead and transfer contents + ownership to Xserver so, when the user pastes (CTRL+V) elsewhere, it will retrieve contents from Xserver... it doesn't matter if source application is opened or closed... Makes sense? Do we need a more complicated design for the solution? [Bug 584826] [NEW] gnome panel sometimes icons disappears
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal Hi folks I'm reporting a problem in Ubuntu 10.04 32bit. I've noticed that sometimes some icons indicator in upper Gnome panel disappear. [Bug 525368] Re: problem when adding new panels to gnome desktop
I am brand new to anything but windows. I have installed this OS over and over again for a week now. So far I have learned to force the installer to recognize my other multiple hard drive OS's mess with grub2... install and remove things and countless other stuff. As I go along I keep having issues. I have one very similar to this if not the same. On boot I get multiple errors as above with all my taskbar applets, can no longer right click anything to copy text or past, tried removing apps, adding them, and even as I said earlier re-installing the OS. As soon as I do an update BOOM!!! Its back! One thing I noticed on all the forums... This issue has been around since 2008 in varying degrees. This is sad because I really liked the idea of gettin' past my Windrawals. Here I go again with yet ANOTHER re- install. This time NO updates until it is resolved... hopefully. I had this problem as well. I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic to Lucid today. I had held off on upgrading to Karmic due to the backlight cycling bug in Karmic. [Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone
@Bruce I've remained out of the discussion since my initial post, however saying that its over reaction when a button that is actively used is then removed from the interface is not constructive. People like myself used that button, a lot. Clearly you didn't use it, or are happy with way it works now. The remaining functionality is not the same though, it has become more awkward to do things like cut/paste locations. Generally this is not an improvement for a lot of people. Its a regression. Progress would be to make the change as it might be more suited to beginners but leave a preference option for the more advanced user. I accept that in usability testing problems may have been highlighted, but the new implementation isn't suitable either in my humble opinion. Instead of worrying over a button, improvements *really* need to be seen in areas like opening a folder with a large number of files in, Nations can rise and fall in the time that operation takes. -- [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508632 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace
I had not realised I was criticising you so very personally as to provoke that outburst. Perhaps it is you who misunderstand. The current workaround for this bug is to disable compiz. But, one has to ask, and this is my point: Why should compiz even have the opportunity of breaking workspaces? Were the underlying design better then compiz would need to know *nothing* of workspaces. A way, perhaps, to have a better design, would be to have the workspace functionality built in at a more fundamental lower level within Gnome etc. Perhaps my suggestion is flawed, perhaps not, BUT either way: that compiz breaks this aspect of workspace functionality shows something is wrong - something is too closely coupled to something else. And, whatever you say, it would be very neat to have the various workspaces addressable as :0.0, :0.1, :0.2 etc etc This suggestion would not break the thin client functionality to which you allude. [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Making the xserver the owner of all content is pretty much the same as using a clipboard manager and making that the owner of all content. There are working clipboard managers ready to be installed from the repository -- namely klipper, glipper and parcellite . they are the more or less official workaround as suggested by collin watson (see comment # 207 ) why none of these clipboard managers is installed by default goes beyond my understanding. There is one problem with these clipboard manager that causes problems with programs like e.g. the gimp and other, that is quite hard to fix properly. When exporting some lines of text to the clipboard the suggested approach (just grabbing it when it is exported) will work just fine. With binary data like images the problem gets more complicated because now you have a lot more data and it potentially contains lots of troublesome bits (nullbytes and the like) that must not crash nor confuse your clipboard manager. but that is pretty much solved by current clipboard mangers, too. The real problem is about nonstatic data. In the above examples the content was present in the source application and you only had to copy it away from there. The clipboard offers functionality to create the data on demand. For example you could work on some vector graphic in inkscape and copy and paste the data to gimp where it would arrive as pixel data. The pixel data is only created when you paste it somewhere. So you can copy a hundred times and paste only the last copy, then only that version will be converted to pixel data. That is the clipboard basically asks your application to provide some content and it is up to you if you answer with some existing data or generate some new data just to satisfy that request. When that generation is expensive it is not practicable to do it every time something is offered to the clipboard but only when something is requested from the clipboard. But a clipboard manager basically request the data every time some data is offered to the clipboard invalidating that optimization and causing a lot of data to be generated and transferred. That overhead might be tolerated, too. But to further complicate matters: When exporting something to the clipboard you don't export something fixed. Fixed means you already decided about what to export (although you might not yet have created it yet -- see above). No, you say that you offer plain text, rich text, binary data or a nice picture. When pasting the application does not request the contents of the clipboard but says it understands plain text, vector graphics, binary data and wave sounds. Now some arbitration takes place and the applications agree on transferring plain text (or binary data whatever is better for some definition of better). Thus it is not even clear what a clipboard manager should grab when an application offers some data for export to the clipboard. It might grab all the offered datastreams but that obviously means some heavy overhead... One thing gnome does is to offer a clipboard manager where your application can store the things it offers to the clipboard when it exits. Control over the clipboard is then transferred to that clipboard manager. That way no data is lost and data is only copied when your application exits, minimizing overhead. This means each and every past, present and future application must be extended to make use of that manager (opt in instead of opt out or forced use of the manager). That is not gonna happen. Furthermore it will not work for crashing applications... Conclusion: Why not go with a clipboard manager that grabs everything? And then working around the performance bottlenecks by stopping certain transfers from happening? You could offer an API to application to mark certain exports as not relevant for the clipboard manager and you could blacklist certain offerings in the clipboard manager for some cases where you cannot modify the application. You could even display a shiny notify-system message telling the user: what you just copied will not be available permanently. Paste it now before closing that app! That manager would support legacy applcation and should be installed by default so no user is bothered with this bug ever again. How to implement: Patch glipper/parcellite to grab everything, offer some blacklisting to mitigate bottlenecks and talk to someone at canonical to include it in the default install... -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 584351] [NEW] Notification area does not contain icons
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: firefox Using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) and GNOME 2.30.0, build date 3/31/10. The GNOME Panel 2.30.0 notification area has been showing erratic behavior in drawing expected icons. When I was running Karmic, the notification area always displayed icons for my Wi-fi connection and the system audio volume level; if my laptop battery was charging or discharging, an appropriate battery icon would be show as well. Since upgrading to Lucid, these icons are not being drawn (and are not accessible) in the notification area. I tried removing the notification area from the panel and reinstalling it, which helped temporarily (several restarts over several days drew the wi-fi icon correctly). However, the wi-fi icon is now not being drawn (despite me being connected). I just now removed the notification area from my panel and re-added it, and the wi-fi icon is again present; the battery icon is displayed when I unplug the machine and the battery discharges. I will update this bug report if this behavior continues. [Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Several users seem to be experiencing difficulties shutting down, rebooting or logging out in the absence of the panel icon's functionality. The following methods may help: - If you want the functions for logging out, shutting down, etc., back in the System menu, right-click the power-button or shut down icon on the panel designed for this, which by default appears in the top-right corner, and select Remove From Panel. You may want to move the rest of the items to reclaim the empty space. If you want to shut down or reboot, the traditional method is through the command shutdown -h now or shutdown -r now, but you can also press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination. If you want to shut down, reboot, log out, hibernate or suspend, you can use one of the commands gnome-session-save --logout, gnome-session-save --logout-dialog or gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog. See man gnome- session-save for more information. Press Alt+F2 and type the command in the window that appears if you do not wish to open the Terminal. Also, as mentioned by f00fyf00fer, most functionality can be alternatively accessed from the main menu. However, some critical functions such as the Network Manager functions and the indication of battery state on a laptop cannot be so easily accessed in a GUI setting in the absence of the panel icons. Besides, the problem is not so much the use of textual commands as the forced use of such commands because of the malfunctioning of elementary GUI facilities. These are, it seems to me, the main reasons people are so angry here. Re: [Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Michael Nagel, I have read carefully your comment and I think you are right for the non-static data and it might be also complicated to deal with the history of clipboard managers and this kind of data also... We could have a history per clipboard type, the text history would have more items than bitmap type, etc. But there is some problems with the clipboard manager workaround : Parcellite - it is not a Gnome application (does not use gconf, stay in the notification area, etc) and it is not going to be maintained anymore (see parcellite website) Glipper - dead for three years, and it is written in the mailing list of the project that it won't be maintained anymore If we want to have a clipboard manager integrated to distributions, the first thing to have is maybe a well maintained application for that first ? I think we should continue the development of Glipper because it is written in python and it is easy to patch, maintain and it is also a real gnome application. Plugins are also very easy to add. Is someone interesting in making a fork or something about Glipper ? Once we have a maintained clipboard manager, we could add more features like the ability to manage different kinds of contents of the clipboard. 2010/5/24, Michael Nagel ubu...@nailor.devzero.de: Making the xserver the owner of all content is pretty much the same as using a clipboard manager and making that the owner of all content. And then
[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
I am affected by this bug as well. On my Computer it happens randomly. That means, even if the applets load well at the beginning, after a while and sporadically a second battery indicator applet appears. I have this problem only with this applet, never had another one doubled. Also it is in two different sizes but their behavior is the same (clicking on them opens their context-menu). This applet appears sometimes when opening Openoffice, opening pdf-files and so on. Restarting the panel with killall gnome-panel does not solve the problem. The icon is still there. I have to logout and login. ** Attachment added: double.Battery.indicator.applet.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49019892/double.Battery.indicator.applet.png -- visual corruption affecting several panel applets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
I forgot to mention that I use latest Lucid with all updates and it was a fresh install.
