[Bug 517925] Re: The help files won't print

2010-06-07 Thread Nate Derby
Hello Mitch and Charlie,

Thanks for your work on this. However, now I've just installed Lucid
and am very frustrated to see that this issue is still not fixed -- at
least on my installation. In fact, it's worse, as neither the
workaround above nor the print preview work. Can you replicate this in
Lucid?

However, something really irregular happened -- I was able to print one
help page, but then the print function stopped working after that first
page. My workaround is to cut and paste into another text editor, but
that's a pain because I lose the formatting (i.e., the table
indentations).

Incidentally, is there a reason why the help files aren't on HTML, so
that they can be printed from any HTML browser? Or is this a GNOME
issue that you have no control over?

Thanks so much for your help. I'm still very new to Ubuntu and am
reading (and printing) the help files to learn how to use it better.

Thanks so much,

NATE

Re: [Bug 497219] Re: Playing audio cd - Rhythmbox seems to jump tracks - occassional put-put sound.

2010-06-07 Thread George A
Hello Kamus:
Thank you for your inquiry. Recently I deleted 9.04 and made a clean
installation of Lucid 10.04 ( I'm trying to become familiar with Lucid, and
to get Totem to play DVD's) . My PC and hardware are unchanged . When
playing an audio CD ( using Rhythmbox) the sound skips / jumps
occasionally. I also have a clean install of 8.04 on a separate
removable HDD. What is interesting is that when I play the same CD (via
Rhythmbox) using 8.04, the sound is OK and does not skip or distort !

I hope this is the info you wanted. Regards, George A

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 as the only installed OS - it was installed last
week, and this is my first exposure to Linux.
Hardware: MB is Asus A7N8x-X-UAYZ, with onboard AC 97 Audio Controller. CPU
is AMD Athelon XP 2000+ , 2GB RAM, 230 GB HDD. I have two installed
DVD/RW's and a wireless internet connection. I've also installed MPlayer and
a lot of related (??) files using the Synaptic Pakage Mgr.

When I insert an audio CD and choose Rhythmbox to play it, I expect the
application to play the CD smoothly, without any extraneous sounds. When
playing an Audio CD installed in my #2DVD drive, the music skips or misses
a few beats, and there is an intermitant put-put sound.

I've experienced a number of other problems with Rhythmbox - it will not
launch when I place the audio cd in #1DVD drive - it causes the desktop to
go black, however, some applications , such as Games, can be launched in
this condition, whereas, other views such as PlacesComputer will not
 launch.

Status in Gnome Settings Daemon: New
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
Dell E1505 inspiron laptop. Fn-F10 hotkey combo ejects cd/dvd tray on
jaunty and earlier versions of gnome, but fails on lucid gnome.

When I hit Fn-F10, the eject on-screen-display icon appears, but the cd
does not open. I've checked the tray on another OS and it works with that
key combo, so it's not a hardware problem.

The output from xev when I press Fn-F10 is:

MappingNotify event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x0,
request MappingKeyboard, first_keycode 8, count 248

FocusOut event, serial 36, synthetic NO, window 0x5c1,

The fact that the eject on-screen-display icon pops up makes me think this
has nothing to do with failure to recognize the key input, and more likely
relates to how gnome processes the XF86Eject command.

For example, if I install xdotool and enter 'xdotool key XF86Eject' in a
console, I see the same result. The o-s-d icon appears, but the cd/dvd
 fails to open.

Entering 'eject' in the console results in the cd/dvd opening.

Not sure what else you need, but let me know.

[Bug 590656] [NEW] Very long lines in output kill scrolling performance

I'd expect no visible slowdown even for very long lines that need
multiple wrapping to get displayed. Nevertheless slowdown is sometimes
so, that can cause gnome-terminal to lose response for a few minutes

[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup

2010-06-07 Thread eyrieowl
If Empathy is going to present itself to the user as though it is
started (the Indicator panel), it should, in fact, be started. It is
entirely misleading to have the status indications there and not have
the actual application which sets them running. It's perfectly fine to
have a Startup Applications entry for empathy and to have that be the
way it starts; however, users should not have to go find that and put
that in themselves. It should already be there. The flexibility goal
of Linux would be met, users intuition about what is going on would be
met, life would be good. :) It's no good putting nifty social
networking features front-and-center and then telling users well, to
use it, you actually have to go do this and type that, etc... Fwiw, I
think the me menu should also have a direct link to pull up the buddy
list, but that's somewhat outside the scope of this bug

[Bug 590442] Re: Evince crashes when viewing a certain page in a pdf file

2010-06-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 590716] [NEW] apps wont open due to maximum clients reached error

2010-06-07 Thread Alloc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I start my computer, work on it, go to sleep, wake up and after some
time I can't start any app on it. If I run the app from a still open
console (or a newly opened after closing one or two apps) I get errors
like the following:

Maximum number of clients
reached/var/lib/python-support/python2.5/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:72:
GtkWarning: could not open display
  warnings.warn(str(e), _gtk.Warning)
Maximum number of clients reachedTraceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/bin/update-manager, line 44, in module
gtk.init_check()
RuntimeError: could not open display

Running Ubuntu 10.04.

This bug is similar to what was reported in #263211.

In the meanwhile until it is fixed: Is there any way (besides disabling
the screensaver) to avoid this? Like manually removing the
pixmaps/unknown's from X?

[Bug 589076] Re: Nautilus Segmentation Fault 0x010719a5 in IA__gtk_range_set_value

2010-06-07 Thread kitkat
Thx Sebastien Bacher to re-attach the bug to us.

I want to be clear on some of your notes. nautilus-elementary is not a
duplicated effort, it's a different implementation from upstream exactly
like the patches you apply on your ubuntu version except it's a little
larger.

All theses changes were never proposed to upstream for a reason,
nautilus-elementary is mostly patches, implementation rejected by
upstream or implementation that never landed. So it would be a waste of
time to publish all this patches a second time, bugzilla or nautilus
mailing list is already full of theses patchs. So there's really no
duplication efforts. Having say that, nautilus-elementary and nautilus
teams have talked together recently and there would be a collaboration
between the two project on some points but each project would follows
their road and their choices.

more details on nautilus mailing list: http://www.mail-archive.com
/nautilus-l...@gnome.org/msg06391.html

I just wanted to make this clear as i am sick of reading this
duplication effort stuff... seriously if there was any duplication i
wouldn't have wasted my time in nautilus-elementary project implementing
stuff upstream didn't want to.

sorry for the spam.

[Bug 380898] Re: files window opens automatically on startup

2010-06-07 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 589076] Re: Nautilus Segmentation Fault 0x010719a5 in IA__gtk_range_set_value

2010-06-07 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thx Sebastien Bacher to re-attach the bug to us.

You are welcome

I want to be clear on some of your notes. nautilus-elementary is not
a duplicated effort, it's a different implementation from upstream
exactly like the patches you apply on your ubuntu version except it's a
little larger.

Right, the difference is that we don't like having to carry those
changes and we think it benefit everybody when those go upstream that's
why we do efforts to get all the changes submitted upstream for review

All theses changes were never proposed to upstream for a reason,
nautilus-elementary is mostly patches, implementation rejected by
upstream or implementation that never landed.

How do you know they would not be accepted since you didn't try? One
reason changes in bugzilla are often sitting there is that they need
work and nobody is available to do the work. If you do pick those tasks
and do the work there is no reason they wouldn't interest upstream as
well.

So it would be a waste of time to publish all this patches a second
time, bugzilla or nautilus mailing list is already full of theses
patchs.

It's not true. Bugzilla has high activity and most maintainer don't
manage to follow things there but patches on the mailing list usually
get reviewed. If you do changes on nautilus you should at least discuss
them on their mailing list. You would get some code review which would
help quality and help nautilus and be nice opensource citizens.

So there's really no duplication efforts. Having say that, nautilus-
elementary and nautilus teams have talked together recently and there
would be a collaboration between the two project on some points but each
project would follows their road and their choices.

Right. I'm following the nautilus mailing list and IRC channel for some
years and I've been talking to Jorge Castro about the issues between
teams recently since the nautilus team expressed concerned about your
team doing changes and not contributing back to nautilus.

I just wanted to make this clear as i am sick of reading this
duplication effort stuff... seriously if there was any duplication i
wouldn't have wasted my time in nautilus-elementary project implementing
stuff upstream didn't want to.

That's a troll, you could suggest your changes and go your way if they
are not interest. They are interested for changes like editable toolbars
for years though, it didn't happen by lack of manpower, it seems that
you guys picked on the task and there is no reason why you shouldn't do
it with the nautilus team to get those change in the upstream code.

 sorry for the spam.

No worry, that's not spam but a constructive discussion to have (though
maybe it should be take out of the bug tracker), your team seems to have
a wrong perception of what nautilus upstream is wanting to work on and
on the value of working with upstream on the sort of changes you are
doing
