[Bug 670237] [NEW] gedit does not stay on top

2010-11-03 Thread alexanghh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

1) Description: Ubuntu 10.10 Release: 10.10
2) Gedit 2.30.3-1ubuntu1
3) What you expected to happen:
I have enabled gedit Always on top in window mode (not maximized).
When I click on other applications, e.g., terminal maximized and without
Always on top enabled, gedit should remain visible (on top of the terminal).
4) What happened instead:
However, gedit disappears into the background, i.e., cannot be seen on screen.

Re: [Bug 661609] Re: empathy can not connect with microsoft MSN video call

2010-11-03 Thread Hussain
Actually,

I had a nightmare with ubuntu 10.10, the CPU gets extremely very hot,
and that without any computational effort, just web surfing cause the
cpu to get at 80 C , while it is critical at 90 C.

I have tried every possible way, needless to say, I even tried to use
another kernel, which resulted in a damage to the boot sector of my
hard drive

I had to low level format it, I have lost all of my data, and decided
to go back to ubuntu 9.04 which is stable ( the CPU temp is still high
about 60 C ) but better,

I have had a bad experience with ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 and lastly with
10.10 , everytime I decide to upgrade I endup with 9.04 again

so, the problem was not fixed but I have had enough with ubuntu, I use
the same laptop with Windows operating system and never get to 54 C ,
so can you help with this issue?

thanks

Hussain

One more data point:
I've been using Evolution since Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04, but I've only started to
see this problem now, with 10.10. All distribution updates were actual updates,
not reinstalls, so the configuration and data directories should have stayed
unchanged.
Curious.

[Bug 664449] Re: Tasks component of evolution not accessible in maverick UNE

2010-11-03 Thread user user
There are 2 alternatives what to do:
1. make the evolution appear normal. this can be done by editing
/usr/share/applications/evolution.desktop. Change the Exec=evolution %U
line to Exec=evolution (my understanding the %U adds the --express switch)
and then re-login. Problem with this approach is that on small netbook
displays the full version doesn't work very well. Another problem is that it
is sort of visually unstable. after a few switches between the mail, calendar,
tasks and memos the section where normally menu is located gets lost and the
whole image shifts downwards so that the botom status line gets cropped from
the screen.

another approach which worked better for me was to do the following
1. sudo cp /usr/share/applications/evolution-mail.desktop
/usr/share/applications/evolution-tasks.desktop
2. sudo cp /usr/share/applications/evolution-mail.desktop
/usr/share/applications/evolution-memos.desktop
3. edit the files, change the first four lines to:
Name=Evolution Tasks
Comment=Manage tasks
Exec=evolution --component=tasks --express
Icon=evolution-tasks
(and similarly for evolution-memos.desktop)
4. relogin, find the new applications in the app finder and put them to the
sidebar.

hope this helps

[Bug 670281] [NEW] evolution stays showing loading information... on inbox

2010-11-03 Thread Tarmo Aia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When IMAP server is configured, at first there is no problem to load mail.
After some time useing, it hangs, and keeps showing loading information... on
the Inbox tab.
Closing or killing evolution won't help, after restart the result is still same.
I found the temporary cure - : deleting the whole .evolution directory resolved
problem for some time.
Maybe the problem is in the security sertificate, because one server has
certificate what is not on the default trust DB and evolution keeps asking the
permission to proceed with this server sertificate on first time opened.
The asking is random, it happens some time and sometimes not.
As far as i know, the certificate is still same, because Mozilla doesent have
any problem useing that certificate after user have confirmed it.

[Bug 540774] Re: G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed

2010-11-03 Thread Ken Southerland
UPDATE:
Solved and my problem had nothing to do with this mentioned error message as it
turns out. Now I can log in and this CRITICAL message still appears in my
syslog.

I first copied all of my system folders (hidden dot folders) out of the
way and verified that I could log in and then carefully copied them back
in a few chunks at a time, logging out and back in after each edit, and
finally found the culprit to be my .profile!

Somehow, possibly by an accidental edit of mine(?), a line in it that
set my PATH had got truncated leaving off the trailing important bits.

export PATH=some_path_of_mine:$PATH

had become ...

export PATH=some_path_of_mine

... with no trailing $PATH or quotation mark.

I'm really surprised that this killed my login capabilities so
drastically though!!! Wow.

Sorry for the false alarm on the G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN(value)'failed
message. Although I can safely say that the message is still coming up,
but what harm it is doing I don't know. :)

I am using firefly svn-1696.
With this version of Firefly/MTdaap, Smart playlists do show up in banshee,
amarok and mplayer on n900. Though that is no proof, it appears the problem
does not lie on the mt-daap side, but is unique to Rhythmbox.

[Bug 670341] [NEW] Find keyboard shortcut does not deliver subsequent keypresses into Find dialogue box

2010-11-03 Thread markling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

When using the keyboard shortcut to Find text, it is usual to deploy
it on the fly. That is, seemlessly. There is unfortunately a seem in
Gedit's Find shortcut.

The process, while in the midst of working in the text editor, takes a
split second, and it usually goes like this:

- Establish a need to find text
- Press the keyboard shortcut to Find
- Enter the text to be found
- Press return
- Find the text
- Continue working

Gedit, however, does not capture keypresses made immediately following
the invocation of the Find function with the keyboard shortcut. It
begins capturing keypresses and putting them in the Search field of
the Find dialogue only after the dialogue has opened.

Since the dialogue can take a while to open there is an unnatural pause
between the Find invocation and the dialogue's appearance. Any
keypresses that are made in this space are channelled into whatever
document is open in Gedit.

But it is normal to start typing the text to be found immediately after
the Find function has been invoked with the keyboard shortcut. It is not
only frustrating to have to wait for the dialogue to open, it is
unintuitive.

The result is that text intended for the Search field is forever being
entered the document because the Find function is taking too long to
catch up.

The resulting processes looks like this:

- Establish a need to find text
- Press the keyboard shortcut to Find
- Enter the text to be found
- See that the Find dialogue has opened slowly and the find text has not
appeared in the Search field
- Press Esc to close the Find dialogue again
- Delete the text that has been put in the document instead of the Find dialogue
- Press the keyboard shortcut to Find again
- What patiently for the Find dialogue to open
- Enter the text to be found
- Press return
- Find the text
- Continue working

You might think that I should learn to wait. But I do find this is
happening time and again because I have an unshakable expectation that
keypresses made after the invocation of a function will go to that
function.

Or this may be because my machine is slow. This should not, however,
prevent my keypresses being captured at the right time and put in the
right place so that my use of the keyboard operates as it ought, which
is seemlessly.

Excellent text editor all the same.

Markling.

[Bug 376073] Re: Pdf search doesn't find strings running over lines

2010-11-03 Thread markling
This should be high priority.

As it stands, the Ubuntu Document viewer cannot be trusted. The search
function does that work.

How many professions can you think of where it is crucial to know
whether a string occurs in a document or not?

Law, journalism, health, security, law enforcement.

Need I go on?

Can anyone trust to use the search in Ubuntu's document viewer? Of
course they can't they shall have to manually read a document before
they can establish whether the text they are looking for is there or
not.

Now consider an instance where one of these professionals has to
establish that a string DOES NOT appear in a document. These documents
can stretch to hundreds of pages. Are you going to sit down and search
through manually and trust your judgment when you need to establish the
absence of something as a matter of life and death, of national
security, of legal importance? Of course you're not. You are going to
get another piece of software to do it, aren't you?

[Bug 629258] Re: Battery life estimation never comes around

2010-11-03 Thread Philip Guyton
I have this Laptop battery (estimating..) on battery left click.
Doesn't change -
Compaq Presario A900 (bios f.33)

whilst on battery
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/current_now
0
cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate:0 mW
remaining capacity: 3422 mWh
present voltage: 10800 mV

So same situation where no current rate is given.
But graphic bat OK and % reading in power stats details tab.
I haven't tried ppa:brian-rogers/power yet but thanks to Andy Eyre and Brian
Rogers for the option.
As it is a client machine and non crucial bug I am reluctant to modify from
vanilla much.

[Bug 668835] Re: Can't unlink metacontact

2010-11-03 Thread topdownjimmy
The corresponding GNOME bug shows that it's intended behavior. I was
misinterpreting what was happening -- the contacts were actually linked
automatically because they were the same contact ID under different user
accounts.
