[Bug 680817] [NEW] Personal information is not saved between sessions

2010-11-24 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I have a Jabber account set up. If I go to Edit - Personal Information, the
Alias is set to my email address by default. I can change the alias and it will
persist until I reboot my computer, at which point it will be reset to my email
address.
I've tried exiting empathy and opening it again and it does persist, it seems
the reboot is what resets it.

Does anyone know of a config file where I could set it manually whilst
this is fixed?

I'm using Empathy 2.32.0.1 in Ubuntu 10.10

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-11-24 Thread Martin Pitt
Gunnar,

finally I have some time to get back to this. I looked at your recent
gdm patch, and have some questions:

 - in language_update(), why do we need the en special case?

 - in the second part of language_update(), why would $GDM_LANG not be a
valid locale? this does some rather expensive things like locale -a and
grep and iterating over all available locales. So far we trusted that
$GDM_LANG was the format of a locale name, and also a valid locale (gdm
already tests that); under that assumption, couldn't we simply set
$LC_MESSAGES to $GDM_LANG?

 - in the new_language check at the bottom, I think we should
additionally check that $GDM_LANG != $LANG; for people who already have
$LANG set to $GDM_LANG (as we do in our installer by default, etc.)
there is IMHO no reason to change anything in the environment or do any
expensive operations.

 - in the final patch I'd like to replace some external program calls
(expr, grep) with internal shell constructs for efficiency; that's just
a FYI, though

Thanks!

Martin

[Bug 535046] Re: VNC connection to Mac OS X 10.6 screen sharing keeps freezing

2010-11-24 Thread Henri Sivonen
It's an known issue of OSX clipboard sharing. VNC session will be
frozen once you copy some text in your X.

Great to know what the reason is. Thank you!

Temporarily workaround is to disable clipboard, but there is no
options in vinagre.

Any chance of detecting if the VNC server is a the OSX built-in server
and disabling clipboard sharing in that case?

[Bug 162111]

2010-11-24 Thread Roman
Indeed, the issue is with the unicode encoding. In my case, e.g., the
degree sign (U+00B0) was rendered as uppercase Upsilon which is wrongly
mapped in the wine's Symbol font by the same code. And wine's unicode
code for the degree symbol is U+221e, which normally refers to the math
infinity sign.

I think it would be great if this font was somehow prevented to override
other system fonts for native linux applications, even after the unicode
mismatch issue is corrected. Why my usual linux apps should be forced to
use a wine's font?

[Bug 680972] [NEW] e-calendar-factory pegs cpu for a while on access to GroupWise calendar

2010-11-24 Thread Dan Connolly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

To reproduce:

1. In evolution, add a groupwise calendar
2. Bring up the gnome calendar panel applet showing your appointments for the
day and such
3. Click the date again to put the panel applet away

expected result: applet goes away with no perceived latency

observed result: applet remains on screen and CPU utilization goes to
100% for 10 or 15 seconds; then applet goes away and CPU usage returns
to normal

The symptoms and such are quite similar to:

I can confirm this in Maverick, but I'm not sure if it's PyGtk or aptdaemon
issue.
I have a Python script that runs the following code:
trans = yield apt_client.update_cache()
action = UPDATE
dia = AptProgressDialog(trans)
dia.set_icon_name(update-manager)
dia.connect(finished, self._on_finished, action)
dia.run()
It gets this error and update dialog doesn't appear.

Maybe I do something wrong?

Completely reproducible on ubuntu 10.10 with evolution 2.30.3. I had an
existing folder and dragged only 1 email to that folder. The complete
inbox was deleted unless the mail that was selected to be dragged. The
email in question was placed in the folder and also found the same email
in the trash folder.

Any idea about recovering my lost emails would be more than welcome. Off
course I have made no backup.

Maybe this information helps. I was not sure that I clicked on the email
before I dragged it. I was coming from reading another email and just
dragged the email from the inbox to the other folder in stead of
clicking on it first. I think it might be related to the problem and
therefore I mention it.

The key can be played anywhere you want as long as it's in line with the
config, the important part is the public and private key are both
there.

Subject: [Bug 375341] Re: ssh-add/ssh-askpass (gnome) not launching graphical
prompt on connect

So, the conclusion is that ssh-askpass will not show if the key is
placed in any other location than .ssh ?

It seems so, for every key under .ssh (regardless of filename), ssh-
askpass launches properly. But if the key is somewhere else ssh-askpass
ignores .ssh/config

It seems like a bug to me, unless ssh-askpass is supposed not to follow
.ssh/config

Btw, the behaviour describe here was consistent in:

[Bug 397980] Re: evolution deletes all e-mails in a folder after renaming

2010-11-24 Thread Joost Verweij
We´ve just had the same problem. I´ve tried a couple of things, the
following thing seemed to work:

-Go to your home folder
-Mark under ´view´ the option ´show hidden files´

Off course, before you do anything, make a backup of the folder

-Go to the folder ´.evolution/mail/local/
-You´ll see a file ´Inbox´
-Rename the file, for instance ´_Inbox´
-(Close and/or) open Evolution
-Still nothing there.. but you´ll see that a new ´Inbox´ file has been created
(in .Evolution/mail/local)
-Delete that file and rename the original file ´_Inbox´ into ´Inbox´
-(Close and/or) open Evolution again.

After that we had our e-mail back in the Inbox.
I hope this works for you as well.

Good luck
Joost

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-11-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi Martin,

Thanks for your comments and questions, both here and on the merge
proposal!

On 2010-11-24 10:40, Martin Pitt wrote:
I looked at your recent gdm patch,

Please note that the gdm patch, i.e. the Xsession code changes, is not
part of my suggestion any longer. The reason why I still didn't remove
the patch is that I wasn't sure about which route to take. My apologies
if that caused some confusion.

As you know, I tried to 'sell' the idea upstream, but wasn't very successful...
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633295

As a result of that, I replaced the previously suggested Xsession changes with
two new language-selector files:
/etc/profile.d/gdm-lang-unset.sh
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/language-environment.sh

OTOH, since language_update() is now part of language-environment.sh,
your questions and comments still apply.

  - in language_update(), why do we need the en special case?

That's an attempt to imitate what the LANGUAGE list would have looked
like if the change had been made via the language tab in
LanguageSelector. If a user picks 'en' in the GDM greeter, the whole
LANGUAGE list should consist of nothing but 'en'.

  - in the second part of language_update(), why would $GDM_LANG not
be a valid locale? this does some rather expensive things like
locale -a and grep and iterating over all available locales. So far
we trusted that $GDM_LANG was the format of a locale name, and also
a valid locale (gdm already tests that); under that assumption,
 couldn't we simply set $LC_MESSAGES to $GDM_LANG?

I think that the reason why there is a need to ensure that LC_MESSAGES
is assigned a valid locale is that ~/.dmrc and /var/cache/gdm/$USER/dmrc
are now updated when LANGUAGE is set. Hence $GDM_LANG (or $GDM_LANGUAGE)
may well be just 'en.utf8', 'sv.utf8' or 'de.utf8', none of which is a
valid locale (at least not on my box).

As regards efficiency (expensive things), please note that the
language_update() function is called only when the user changes the
language from the GDM greeter.

  - in the new_language check at the bottom, I think we should
additionally check that $GDM_LANG != $LANG; for people who already
have $LANG set to $GDM_LANG (as we do in our installer by default,
etc.) there is IMHO no reason to change anything in the environment
 or do any expensive operations.

No, no, please don't go back to mixing up LANG and LANGUAGE/LC_MESSAGES.
;-)

Assume a user with these ~/.profile settings:

export LANG=de_DE.utf8
export LANGUAGE=en_GB:en
export LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.utf8

If s/he picks German (Germany) from the GDM greeter, i.e. changes the
language from English to German, $GDM_LANG/$GDM_LANGUAGE would equal
$LANG. But now, when we complete the separation of LANG from the
translation language, that has nothing to do with it any longer, has it?

  - in the final patch I'd like to replace some external program
 calls (expr, grep) with internal shell constructs for efficiency;
 that's just a FYI, though

Ok. I did a few such replacements already, but there may well be further
opportunities that I missed.

Please also see my comments on the merge proposal.

I'd like to raise a couple of Kubuntu related questions. The GNOME and
KDE versions of language-selector are distributed in separate binary
packages, while there is a third common container. The code that sets
LC_MESSAGES is included in language-selector-common, but I suppose it
can't hurt the KDE users. As regards the code that replaces the
previously suggested changes to /etc/gdm/Xsession, it's put in the GNOME
binary package to prevent possible conflicts with KDE. My first question
is whether there is a need for code tweaking to prevent problems when
both GNOME and KDE reside on the same machine. Secondly, OTOH, I wonder
if the suggested changes may be useful to KDE users as well, and
consequently should be included in the common binary instead of the
GNOME binary?

Gunnar

[Bug 681126] [NEW] Selections work column by column, not row by row

2010-11-24 Thread Greg Auger
Public bug reported:

When selecting text that is in blocks (see attached PDF) then text is
selected in columns, rather than in rows. In some contexts this makes
PDF readers that use poppler almost useless.

The problem was noticed in Evince and Okular. Adobe Reader does not
experience this problem.

[Bug 643883] Re: detecting discharging is wrong

2010-11-24 Thread cherep
@ombako
Before I switched to Linux Ubuntu, I had used Windows where I chose an option
to the case when my battery is charged up to 80% to maximize LIFETIME of the
battery like it is described here:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/Z560-Battery-80-available-plugged-in-not-charging-Energy/ta-p/309028
I did it in Lenovo Energy Management. Have you done the same? It might be a
source of the problem :)

[Bug 387835] Re: It is not possible to right-click and drag the files

2010-11-24 Thread David
While I understand why this bug was Won’t-Fix’ed, the reasons for the
bug remain:

(1) Using the middle mouse button either for dragging or to show a menu is not
particularly discoverable. Dragging is usually done with the left mouse button,
and menus are shown either via the right mouse button or via some visual
affordance. Using the middle button for either is something almost no one will
guess, due to the button not being used in such a manner in any other context
(at least none that an average user would be aware of).
(2) Even if one discovers this functionality, it will still feel unnatural.
Since the middle mouse button is never used in this way anywhere else, this
behaviour will continue violating the user’s mental model of how this button is
used, and will be difficult to get used to.
(3) You have to remember before starting the drag operation if you might want
to use the menu. If you remember afterwards, you have to use the Alt key.
Having two methods of doing the same thing makes an interface less
habit-forming.
(4) Most crucially, anyone using a non–multi-touch touchpad (that is, the vast
majority of notebook users), will be unable to user this feature as is (but
will have to use the Alt key). This is worse for anyone that uses both a
desktop and a notebook, as one will have to use two slightly different methods
in each environment, rather than getting into the habit of using one single
method.

My proposal: When dragging a file, if the right mouse button is click,
the drag operation ends and a context menu appears. At this point, the
user may stop holding down the left mouse button. Letting go of the
right mouse button while hovering over a command in the menu activates
it, just like with standard context menus.

This alternate solution is less affected by the above issues. It can
even replace both the middle-drag and the Alt-drag methods entirely.

Thoughts? (Should I bring this up in the upstream bug?)

[Bug 438016] Re: Evolution is not pulling birthdays, or other items on the personal information tab from Google Contacts

2010-11-24 Thread Tobias Wolf
So, we need libgdata 0.7 in Ubuntu now as per comment #5
[ at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630358#c5 ]

Though this is still waiting for libgdata 0.7, then there weren't as that many
API changes, thus I got eds ready for it, so when the eds will be compiled
against 0.7 or higher libgdata, then fields like birthday, home page url and
blog url will be available in UI and will be synced forth and back from the
Google server.

I had a similiar problem and I solved it with:

[srydb...@zeus tmp]$ sudo rm -rf keyring-KXX3Aw/

Maybe the keys are cached there?

[Bug 669578] Re: Evolution Address Book Sync with Gmail Missing Fields

2010-11-24 Thread Tobias Wolf
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 438016 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438016

I think we need libgdata 0.7 to support these fields.

The support was committed here:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/libgdata/commit/?id=aa23ec1cdcaaa5511a5ba713bebdbe0f101bf180

But it didn’t go into 0.6.4, so we should upgrade?

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=630358#c5

In any case, this is a dupe of but #438016
