[Bug 688799] Re: Evolution Crashes on Startup EI: MAIL PREFSSegmentation fault

2010-12-11 Thread Omer Akram
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding

[Bug 253785] Re: Apps can't sync with Rockbox

2010-12-11 Thread Scott Hosking
Following comment #9, I added the file .is_audio_player to my Rockbox
device (ipod 60Gb v5.5) so that I could specify the location of
Playlists directory when syncing with Banshee (1.8.0).

I've tried setting/adding the line playlist_path=Playlists/ to the
file, the default for Rockbox, but Banshee still added my playlists to
the path Music/Playlists. Thus, it seems Banshee isn't reading my
.is_audio_player file.

[Bug 253785] Re: Apps can't sync with Rockbox

2010-12-11 Thread Scott Hosking
Following on from my last comment (#12), I've created a script which
rsync's my playlists to the path Playlists/ (on the Rockbox device) and
then converts from the format .m3u to .m3u8 (smaller files + seems to be
preferred by Rockbox... can an option to use m3u8 be added to Banshee?)

This needs to be used after syncing with Banshee (i.e., shut Banshee
down) with the Rockbox device still plugged in.

I do not know if I have the same bug here. I can start evolution as usual and
after some time (especially when hitting 'send message') it crashes with an
segmentation fault. But it did also when I just minimized it.
How can I get such detailed information like Eike posted here?
--debug=FILE dues also only write 'segmentation fault' to that file...

[Bug 668525] Re: No hibernate in gdm system menu (inconsistency against indicator-applet)

2010-12-11 Thread Mik
The same situation here.
I try in 2 different PC, one AMD based and another Intel based.
The system is hibernate capable:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower
--type=method_call --reply-timeout=6000 /org/freedesktop/UPower
org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.Get string:org.freedesktop.UPower
string:CanHibernate
method return sender=:1.17 - dest=:1.41 reply_serial=2
   variant boolean true
The bus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower
/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Hibernate command working fine,
and of course under the logout menu is still working the hibernate. Only under
the GDM login window is missing the hibernate option.
The system is a up-to-date Xubuntu 10.10.

Re: [Papercuts-ninja] [Bug 491555] [NEW] In gedit's Replace window, a single Tab does not move focus from Search to Replace field

default input focus lies in the Search field. The user types the search

focus moves from the Search field to the choice disclosure control
instead of to the Replace field. Pressing Tab in the Search field should
move input focus to the Replace field. The search field can recall
history by pressing Up/Down arrows, and offers autocomplete, so changing
the Tab focus chain does not prevent the user from recalling a previous
 search string.

[Bug 688943] [NEW] gdm should use the theme of the user when there is only one user on the system

2010-12-11 Thread Mathijs Henquet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When gdm only lists one user, so when there is only one user available
at login, gdm should sync it's gtk theme and perhaps the background with
that user's theme and background. So when i'm the only user on a ubuntu
system chaning the theme from ambiance to radiance the gdm theme should
also change acordingly.

I understand the current behaviour is desirable when there are more
users on a single system, but I think gdm should make a exception in
this case.

[Bug 688943] Re: gdm should use the theme of the user when there is only one user on the system

2010-12-11 Thread Chris Wilson
I don't think this would be a good idea as it would provide an
inconsistent user experience between different computers. It's not a big
problem, but for some user it will be a source of confusion that may
lead them to believe that there is actually a difference between the two
computers.

Not sure if this a paper cut, certainly a edge case. But since it is
extremely annoying, the gdm theming could be labeled as a 'exitsing
feature' and it seems to be a trivial fix it thought i would report it
anyway.

[Bug 688943] Re: gdm should use the theme of the user when there is only one user on the system

2010-12-11 Thread Mathijs Henquet
@Chris if there is only one user on the computer wouldn't it be logical
that they changed the system settings when changing their themes. On
another computer they can just assume a diffrent system theme. That was
the whole point of this bug that since there is only *one* user that
user setting should escalate to system wide settings. I think this
wouldn't lead to confusion and users can grasp this.

Besides the difference is subtle in a way that is adds that little bit
of refinement we should be striving for while not confusing users that
look at it 'at a glance'.

[Bug 688955] [NEW] Evince Starts OK But Crashes When File Opened

2010-12-11 Thread LaneLester
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

There are lots of evince crashes reports, but they all have specific
conditions that don't match mine.

I get the same results with xpdf as with evince, which may be a clue.

I've tried several different PDFs from different sources, and the
behavior is the same: the program starts OK, but as soon as I click Open
for the file, the program exits. Evince produces no message in the
terminal, but xpdf says Segmentation fault.:

1) Description: Ubuntu natty (development branch) Release: 11.04

[Bug 688858] [NEW] Moving the panal renders the computer useless unrepairable !

2010-12-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

My son tried a puzzle game I installed from games multi verse. It crashed and
changed the screen resolution. The only available panel was on the bottom. That
panel did have any options. A forced pull the plug reboot was the only way out
of this. THIS IS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM NOT THE PROBLEM
To fix this I moved the top panel to the bottom so he could at least log out
and start over. I unexpanded the bottom panel. Then I moved the top panel to
the bottom and it worked great. In fact I liked it so much I decided to move
the top to the bottom on my own login. I did not unexpanded. I expected it to
just place the panel above the bottom panel. Here is the problem:
It did NOT simply put the panel above the bottom one, it simply put the panel
on top of the bottom one!!! This results in a huge computer error as to objects
can not occupies the same space at the same time. Ubuntu deals with this by a
blank flickering panel that is totally useless. This is the main control task
bar. At this point you can not do anything. You cannot even fix this. There are
no controls whatsoever. I even upgraded to a newer release and the problem is
still there. I can log in under another user but all the files under the other
user are still protected under the other user. I cant see any way around this
except to just lose all user information, data, and settings. Im sure glad my
windows system doesn't pull this crap!

[Bug 673760] Re: Rhythmbox crashes with Wacom tablet attached

2010-12-11 Thread zmooc
I am running into the same problem: when my Wacom Bamboo One tablet is
connected and I start rhythmbox, I am logged out after a few seconds. It
appears X crashes. Nothing in /var/crash after enabling apport. Xorg
logfile and dmesg show that it appears the tablet is connected and
reconnected 3 times or so.

Excerpt from dmesg:
Dec 11 17:39:59 dallas kernel: [ 28.748150] usb 2-1.1.1: USB disconnect,
address 11
Dec 11 17:39:59 dallas kernel: [ 29.024678] usb 2-1.1.1: new low speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 12
Dec 11 17:40:00 dallas kernel: [ 29.121493] input: Wacom Bamboo1 as
/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.1/2-1.1.1/2-1.1.1:1.0/input/input12

Nothing else in there.

The order in the Xorg.log is rather odd. It appears the disconnects are
noticed in quick succession as are the reconnects. I have attached the
logfile. After the last line, X crashes (or I'm logged out, I'm not
sure).

Disabling MTP support for Rhythmbox does indeed solve the problem.

[Bug 588155] Re: randomly gnome-settings-daemon fails to start

2010-12-11 Thread Kupfer
This problem keeps appearing for me since yesterday. Just as in the bug
description, when I log in, sometimes the ambiance theme doesn't load and I get
the default GTK-Theme instead. I have to either log out and log back in or
start the appearances window to solve this annoying issue.
Also, even tough I don't know whether this is normal or not (I usually don't
fiddle around with appearance settings, but use the defaults instead), when I'm
selecting ambiance, after restart or log in-log out it is set to custom.
Again, I have no clue if this is relevant.
I'm using Ubuntu 64bit desktop edition on an Asus EeePC 1005PE.

[Bug 688995] [NEW] gedit remains open when last tab closed

2010-12-11 Thread Tin Tvrtkovic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Gedit uses a MDI model; in particular, tabs. When the last tab in Gedit
is closed, Gedit remains open with no tabs. Gedit should be modified to
close the application when the last tab is closed.

Rationale:

Ubuntu ships a number of application that use tab interfaces; for
example: Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, Pidgin (conversation window),
Nautilus, Eclipse, Monodevelop, etc. I find that all of these
applications except Eclipse and similar (so, development environments)
will terminate once the last tab is closed.

Firefox: will make is difficult for the user to close the last tab
(either by hiding the tab bar when only one tab is open, or by removing
the X button in the last remaining tab). However, the last tab can be
closed by CTRL+W (although this command, found in the File menu, changes
name from 'close tab' to just 'close' when only one tab is open), or by
a mouse gesture bound to 'close current tab' (if using such an add-on).
Once the last tab is closed, the whole window instance closes.

Chrome: closing the last tab is easy with the X button in the tab
itself. When the last tab is closed, the application instance closes.

Pidgin conversation window: hides the tab bar when only one tab open, so
technically the ability to close tabs is taken away when there is only
one tab, and the user is forced to close the entire conversation window.
Still: no tabs, no window.

Nautilus: similar to Pidgin conversation window.

Applications like Eclipse, Monodevelop etc. use a different model: they
can continue running with zero tabs open.

I would argue that, since Gedit is likely to be used by non-technical
users on a daily basis (being the default text editor/previewer), Gedit
should be patched to behave consistently with applications like Firefox
and Nautilus; that is, to either hide the tab bar when there is only one
document loaded, or to terminate itself when the last tab is closed. I
argue this should be done primarily in the name of user interface
consistency of the platform.

Since Gedit can be used as more than a simple text editor, even as a
full fledged IDE, Gedit should be patched to allow reverting to the old
behavior, but this option should be disabled by default.

[Bug 689022] [NEW] MSN account (telepathy-butterfly) vanishes when password is removed from keyring

2010-12-11 Thread Dylan McCall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I have Empathy hooked up to an MSN account, which uses telepathy-butterfly. My
password for that account is in Gnome Keyring's password store like this:
account: butterfly/msn/[$LOGINNAME]; param: param-password

If that stored password is missing, the account completely vanishes from
Empathy's Accounts list. It does not seem to disappear from ~/.mission-
control/accounts/accounts.cfg.

This does not happen with any other protocols. (Normally, Empathy will just
recognise it needs a password for an account).
I recently switched my default keyring from Default to Login, which triggered
the issue.
This can cause data loss (in a practical sense), since the conversation logs
for that vanished account are no longer available from Empathy's interface.

Steps to reproduce:
 * Add a telepathy-butterfly account in Empathy
 * Quit Empathy, make sure telepathy-* and mission-control are not running.
(Probably not necessary, but just to be sure).
 * Open Seahorse. Search for a password with “account: butterfly/msn” in the
description and delete it.
 * Log out and log in, again just to be sure.
 * Start Empathy. Note that the MSN account is missing.

[Bug 689021] [NEW] Totem window's minimum height increased too much.

2010-12-11 Thread farta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

The totem media player window's minimum height will increase if the
media info the playing file is long. However, it will not limit its
minimum height if it met a extreme long media info. I have a media file,

window grows even more height than the entire screen, and cannot be
resized down vertically. It looks rather ugly.

[Bug 687670] Re: [Natty] Add a ubiquity slide for GDM Session choosing. Also add to help files.

2010-12-11 Thread Dylan McCall
I really appreciate that you took the time to make a branch for this, Matt. It
does look good, and from the looks of it you did everything right! :)
One other cool thing you can do: it's possible to make a bug that is fixed with
a commit. If you're using the command line, it's something like bzr commit
--fixes=lp:BUGNUMBER. If you're using Bazaar Explorer, there's a text box below
where you enter the commit message to list any fixed bugs. This way, Launchpad
can keep track of things a little better.
I'm also quite interested in the layered screenshot you mentioned in the merge
request (although the link is broken). I had no idea what those were, looked it
up and it's a neat idea. Could make things very smooth…

However, I do agree with Evan. This is the type of thing that shouldn't
be necessary. It's kind of a mundane detail that the login screen should
make clear on its own anyway. By presenting it front and centre here, we
risk creating an illusion of complexity.

Now somebody reading this sees two choices they must weigh. It may be
obvious to us that one is the default (and we can even say “Unity is the
default because it's shiny and new and awesome”), but people brand new
to Ubuntu are not always happy when they see “Some Assembly May Be
Required.“ They've already made the choice to drop Windows and clean
install Ubuntu on top, and that's enough choosing for one day. The
important thing here is making them feel satisfied, like they've made
the right choice already (because they have). Pointing out what they can
do Right Now (without deviating from Ubuntu's standard experience!) and
how cool it is.

On the other hand, this is certainly something to keep track of. If the
appropriate stuff is put in place we won't need to, but it may be
necessary to explain what the Ubuntu Classic Desktop / 2D desktop /
whatever-we're-calling-it is, and what Unity is. We'll have to wait and
see, I think.

Not that choices are bad, but I think they are better presented later
on, after somebody has experienced the defaults and has some opinions
about what is new. If I understand correctly, Yelp will finally be
usable. Maybe now is a good time to promote the offline help for that
purpose.

Just to clarify why I don't want the slideshow doing something it wouldn't need
to do if another application was clearer: the slideshow should never, ever ever
be necessary. If we use it to bandage UI blunders elsewhere, it risks being too
important.

[Bug 689066] [NEW] new appointment or new task produces segfault

2010-12-11 Thread old_toby
Public bug reported:

evolution 2.32.1-0ubuntu2

When trying to create a new appointment or a new task, evolution crashes
immediately. When I started evolution from commandline, I can see it
produces a segfault.

I actually wanted to report the bug with apport, but everytime I want to
report it, apport itself crashes (#688535).

If anybody can help me on how to add more information, I'll do.

[Bug 657357] Re: GTK Printing Dialog: Duplex printing on HP inkjets does not work

2010-12-11 Thread jpka
Hi Till, i try to follow your suggestion. I start 'system-config-
printer' from commandline; well known printer setup GUI appears. I not
find any 'driver' selector, but found 'Make and model - Change' button,
i use it, i hope it's right place. I also read your comment #1 for bug
#378068, which says

... Try also the SpliX driver. If it does not appear under the
driver choices for your printer, try a similar printer model like the
CLP-300 or CLP-310. ...

Sadly my CLP-300N (or CLP-300) not have splix associated. Nearest is CLP-500. I
select it, it looks now 'Samsung CLP-500, SpliX V. 2.0.0', but printer instead
of my document, print
'SPL-C error - Please use proper driver. .'
I also read your

... If these also do not list the SpliX driver, install the SpliX
package from ...

But synaptic show me Splix already exist in my system.
Is there any instruction how to tie (associate) my CLP-300N with Splix? I not
found anything via search. Thank you!

It's actually the appointment properties dialog which causes the

[Bug 656932] Re: send file to thunderbird with non-ASCII path

2010-12-11 Thread urusha
So, here is quick fix, run this as root:

printf '#!/usr/bin/perl
system(/usr/bin/thunderbird @ARGV);
' /usr/local/bin/thunderbird
chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/thunderbird
chown root:root /usr/local/bin/thunderbird

It just runs thunderbird through perl script (using the fact that
/usr/local/bin is in the left of /usr/bin in PATH). Don't ask me why it
works:).

But there is another bug: if you want send many files at the time, only one
file appears in the created message. So, I write workaround. Copy thunderbird
from attachment to /usr/local/bin, chmod 755 and chown root:root it.
This workaround has a little bug, which breaks file names if you enter
something like %D0 in recipient field in nautilus-sendto window. But I can't
imagine a situation you'll need or want this.

[Bug 631740] Re: Dbus error when clicking network icon in nautilus - Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply

2010-12-11 Thread Evan Broder
Oliver, I'm a bit confused. As I understand it, the bug described here
was the result of switching gconf to use gdbus, and that change was only
introduced in Maverick. If I am understanding this correctly, then you
could not be experiencing this particular bug on Lucid, even if you're
experiencing the same symptoms. Can you please open a separate bug
against the gvfs package in Ubuntu (not against lucid-backports) so that
we can track it more appropriately?

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken (0a bytes inserted into PostScript output)

2010-12-11 Thread LEGOManiac
Four days ago I unsubscribed to this list as I hadn't had this problem in
months and assumed it was fixed. Today, I tried printing a calendar and
discovered the bug still exists.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, fully patched as of this afternoon (Dec. 11, 2010).
The problem surfaces when I try to this PDF from Document Viewer. I've had to
resort to using Okular.

When I print it from Document viewer, the printer light flashes to
indicate that it is receiving data, but nothing ever prints. Printing
from Okular works fine.

For what it's worth, the calendar is formatted for 11x17 paper but I
was trying to print it to legal size pages. I'm not sure if it's the
printer or the computer that does the appropriate scaling, in case that
has anything to do with it.
