[Bug 532607] Re: rhythmbox-metadata assert failure: *** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/rhythmbox/rhythmbox-metadata: double free or corruption (fasttop): 0xb6d004c0 ***

2011-01-02 Thread Anonymous
I have a similair problem. Placed music in folder home/me/Music/Alagna/Viva.
(invalid encoding) was added automatically to the name of some of the
unarchived files. When trying to open with right click-Open with Rhythmbox, it
didn't open the invalid encoding files (it played the files which weren't
added invalid encoding). After importing, Rhythmbox played all files.
Rhythmbox imports the music, but as unknown artist, unknown album. Tried to
select all songs in album and change artist and album. Gives errors for every
file and doesn't change artist and album name. Tried for each mp3 separately
and it still gave error, but it changed artist/album name.
Tried to change the artist name of two(at the same time) of the mp3s which
didn't have the invalid encoding appended at their names. It changed the
artist/album names to unknown. It seems the problem is not that artist/album
names are not changed, It seems the problem is they ARE CHANGED TO unknown.

Tried to do the same thing with another bunch of mp3s and sometimes it showed
all of the following:
Error while saving song information Internal Data stream error
Error while saving song information Internal GStreamer problem,; file a bug
Error while saving song information Internal Data stream error
and it changed the artist/album just for some of the files. For the same bunch
of mp3s, it sometimes workes for all the mp3s, sometimes just for some of them.

My suggestion would be to make Rhythmbox automatically know Folder1 is artist
name and Folder2 is album name when finds a file in
/home/me/Music/Folder1/Folder2.

[Bug 696455] [NEW] GTK/gnome applications/desktop loses the GTK theme sometime

2011-01-02 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Public bug reported:

First of all, I am sorry that I may send this bug report against the
wrong package.

With Ubuntu 10.10 (actually on two different machines: one of them is a
notebook with fresh install, the other is upgraded since the stone age
but it is also a 10.10 32 bit version now) sometimes I have the
experience that gtk/gnome apps loses the theme. It means that things
appears in a default themeless GTK way. On the notebook (the new
install) let's say 2 startups from 10 (in average) results the themeless
appearance after logging in (including the gnome panel). On the other
machine, if some application which used the panel exists (or killed)
there is a chance that theme switches back to the themeless state
without my will. In both cases, if I start application gnome-
appearance-properties, everything returns into the correct themed
appearance even without doing anything in gnome-appearance-properties
just starting it, and CTRL-C before its window appears (I run it from
terminal window) helps. I have no idea what can cause this really
annoying bug. Thanks in advance, if you have any advice to avoid this.

[Bug 696455] Re: GTK/gnome applications/desktop loses the GTK theme sometime

2011-01-02 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Hmm, I found this in .xsession-erros file:

** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 1365 error_code 8 request_code 3 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Can it cause the problem? Is it a gnome-setting-daemon bug then?

[Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs

2011-01-02 Thread Jochen Fahrner
We are now on 10.10 Maverick and this bug still exists. I can't believe that!
I have over 20 years experience in unix systems, and believe me, if this bug is
meant by design, than this design is broken!
There should be nothing that root can't access on my own machine. There are
some filesystems for accessing remote file systems (e.g. nfs), where you can
define root acces as nobody. This is for security reasons, because you don't
always have control over user rigths on remote systems. But inside my own
system, root should have access to everything.

And even if I have mounted filesystems where my root account has nobodys
rights, then it should be possible to exclude them with rsyncs -x
option (don't cross filesystem boundaries). This seems to be a second
bug. Why does rsync try to include .gvfs with the -x option? If this is
a mounted filesystem, it should be recognized as such.

[Bug 696471] [NEW] Cannot disable preview pane by default

2011-01-02 Thread dmizer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

UI needs to have a way of disabling the preview pane by default.
Currently the only way to disable the preview pane is to change the
setting on each individual folder. When using multiple email accounts
this is extremely tedious. Starting evolution with the --disable-preview

[Bug 661444] Re: calendar does not respect preference show/hide end times

2011-01-02 Thread Oliver Joos
I just tested Natty alpha and confirm that this bug is fixed.

@Derrick: AFAIK there is no fix for Maverick or older yet. You could try
to convince someone to backport the patch to Lucid as this is an LTS
release.

[Bug 694968] Re: Gthumb : no batch resizing any more !!??!!

2011-01-02 Thread Michael Chudobiak
Yes, this was a one way (nonsense) decision. With each release, we
randomly select 2 or 3 features to remove, just to annoy people. Also,
we will no longer use the letter u or the number 7 in any part of
the user interface. The use of the letter q is also under review.

If any of this is a problem for you, you can try upgrading to gThumb
2.12.1-3, available here:

https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/gthumb

More seriously, as a stable release, 2.12.1-3 does include the resizing
tool. The 2.11.x series was an unstable development series.

- Mike

[Bug 696534] [NEW] Regression in maverick: hang when fetching IMAP mail

2011-01-02 Thread Wolf Geldmacher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu.
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

I just upgraded from lucid to maverick. Evolution worked without issues
in lucid.

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
$ dpkg -l | grep evolution
ii evolution 2.30.3-1ubuntu7.1 groupware
suite with mail client and organizer
ii evolution-common2.30.3-1ubuntu7.1 architecture
independent files for Evolution
ii evolution-data-server 2.30.3-2ubuntu2evolution database
backend server
ii evolution-data-server-common 2.30.3-2ubuntu2 architecture independent
files for Evolution Data Server

3) What you expected to happen
As nothing was changed on the server side I expected evolution to work as it
did in Lucid.

4) What happened instead
In maverick evolution hangs indefinitely trying to retrieve mail from my imap
aacount. The network (wireless) is flooded with packets being resent/duplicate
ACKs up to the point of being barely usable.

Taking evolution off-line and then back online fixes the problem until
the next time that evolution tries to retrieve mail.

[Bug 696498] Re: weather applet crashes login and password

2011-01-02 Thread Paolo Rotolo
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus

2011-01-02 Thread ElPasmo
I've tried to reproduce this bug:
gconf-editor - apps - nautilus - list_view - I've checked
default_sort_in_reverse_order
I've create two new documents a and b and insert them in a new folder. I've
entered the folder and found first b and after a.
I unchecked default_sort_in_reverse_order, created a new subfolder, moved a
and b to the new subfolder, entered it and found them in the correct order
(first a and second b).

So I wasn't able to reproduce this bug on a x86_64 2.6.32-27.49 with
nautilus 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.1

Are you aware that this option only applies to new folders (old folders
remember their previous order and show that order instead of the
default)?

If that's not the case:
Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

[Bug 696546] [NEW] Crypic error comment

The package says An error occurred while adding files to archive.
This is about as helpful as the old IBM 7000 Series console message
'Operator must do something'. Even running this from console does not
produce a log of the errors.

If I have missed a report file, I crave enlightenment.

If there is a log, the message could at least say where it is. If there
is not a log, then the package needs to create one. I need to know
whether my archive is any good or not. And if it is bad, what parts of
it are untrustworthy.

I have run this twice to two different external hard drives with the
same result, and I am not amused.

[Bug 225361] Re: other users don't have access to .gvfs

2011-01-02 Thread Ralph Corderoy
rsync isn't trying to include .gvfs even with the -x option. It along
with find(1), etc., has to be able to do some things with .gvfs to even
work out it is the mount point of another filesystem and shouldn't be
descended into further. Those things fail in a way that they never
should with Unix semantics for root. You're just seeing other symptoms
of the same underlying problem; FUSE's configuration not allowing root
to do anything, as it normally can. But this bug report isn't the place
for discussion, I suspect. I just wanted to clarify that there isn't a
further bug.

[Bug 696505] Re: Problem with reverse list order in Nautilus

2011-01-02 Thread smurf
what you have done is not correct. you don't need to create new documents.
I've modified the gconf key like you made, after that:
- I opened a Nautlus window in list mode and the files were ordered in reverse
sort order.
- that was not ok for me, I closed the window and restored the gconf key
- I reopened the same window and the list was back to normal sort order
- after a bit of time casually I opened gedit and looking for a file to edit I
noticed that the browser window was in reverse sort order, I checked other
Nautilus window but they were ok, but all the other browser window, in all the
programs that allow to surf the file system, were in reverse sort order.

What you say about new and old folders is not correct, the gconf option
apply to old folders as well.

Trying to reproduce the bug on my laptop I was not able to obtain
exactly the same behaviour, there the gedit browser window maintain the
normal order, but the bin folder I was using to check the changes has
been changed in reverse order and now is not restored to the normal
order.

that smell like a brother of another bug in nautilus windows I reported
before, bug # 435343

Binary package hint: gnome-panel, nm-applet, etc...

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

[Bug 662641] Re: Nautilus does not give Show in Folder option to files after running a search

Hi David

I can confirm that when using the package nautilus on Ubuntu 10.10 using
the steps provided by David that I can reproduce the bug. Therefore I
have set this bug to confirmed.

However I think that this bug should be categorised as 'wishlist' as it
is a feature that needs to be added to Nautilus rather than a bug in a
current feature.

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in all
applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have open
right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The result is
that I get a lot of misses when I try to drag a window border, which
usually results in my clicking on the wrong window altogether. The best
fix for this usability bug is to create an invisible region around
each non-maximized window about 4px thick that can be used for resizing
(in addition to the visible border). Or perhaps there should be a border
thickness option on the System Preferences Windows dialog (although
the default thickness should still be increased considerably). Ideally
all windows would also have a resize handle but I realize that these
have to be application controlled (at least that seems to be the
  position of the metacity team).

[Bug 692145] Re: Need to enter two times my pass word

2011-01-02 Thread Dragonfly
So, I discover what wrong now, I don't know if it's normal or not? If you use
some services like Ubuntu one or other through Gwibber, your pass word is
record inside a seahorse folder and the key word for this is generally the same
as your Ubuntu login. If you change your Ubuntu login, several troubles
appears, because you don't use the same pass word (but not all time, every
login)... When you log in Ubuntu trought GDM after your are login a new window
appears equaly and ask to you to enter your trousseau of key connexion
(connect you with different servivies you use who the pass word are stocked
inside seahorse). And some other trouble appears aqually in your Gnome
environment. The color of your task bar (up and down) change for a grey color
and your icons change too. Nautilus environement is changed equally??? Now, I
use the same pass word and this problem is gone. But I think there is a trouble
with the encrytion system... Because now I test an other software who use the
encryption: Crytpkeeper, is feel nice ans usefull. However, some time after
to be login in Ubuntu the trouble with Gnome environement and Nautilus come
back?...
Somebody have an idea for this question?

[Bug 666555] Re: users and groups home directory change does not take

2011-01-02 Thread RnSC
Following up, new system. Gave up on getting 10.04 video to work on my
system (another story), switched to 10.10.

Created a user named bugta, user 1001, group 1001.

Tried to use System / Administration / Users and Groups to change the
home directory of bugta from /home to /lhome. lhome pre-existed, but
did NOT have a directory in it called bugta.

After prompting me, it created /lhome/bugta and copied the contents of
/home/bugta into it. However it did not update /etc/passwd. To be
explicit, the bugta line in /etc/passwd still had /home/bugta as the
user's home directory.

Repeated the test described in my 2010-11-14 post exactly, except for
changing the user. The line below was copy pasted from what I typed:

/usr/sbin/usermod -d /lhome/bugta -g 1001 -l bugta -s /bin/bash -u 1001
bugta 2011.01.02-1709.log 21

/etc/passwd was modified to make the home directory /lhome/bugta.

I believe that this represents a bug in 10.10. The System / Administration /
users and groups dialog does not modify /etc/passwd even when the user being
changed is not logged on.
---

With regard to modifying the user who is logged on, I believe that
*somehow* this should work. My need for it *is* driven by how I build
my systems, which will explain below, but that is immaterial and I do
not want to cloud my message. It suggest the following:

The issue would arise any time userid, groupid, home directory is
changed for an active user. If the user is *not* in the user trying to
make the change, I suggest that the program refuse to make the change,
and specify that the user must log off and all processes running under
that user ID must exit before the change can be made. Note that in
obscure cases that this may still not be sufficient, as any process
could have information about the target user ID in private memory. The
only 100% safe thing to do is to reboot. The user could be warned and
given a choice - log off or reboot.

If the user is the one running Users and Groups, I suggest that a
dialog offer the choices of aborting the change, or continuing with a
unavoidable and immediate system restart without further warning
afterward to ensure consistency for running processes related to that
user ID (To avoid giving the user the opportunity to ctrl-alt-backspace
for example out of the reboot).

I do not like the idea of having to reboot the system for a change, but
this is a very unusual situation.

---
Why I need this (And a little bit of a soap box):

In general, my user home directories are on a file server. This is
/home, created by an auto mount map or direct nfs mount. I create the
accounts on each machine to avoid the complexity of LDAP at the cost of
15 minutes work when I rebuild.

The account created during installation I use as a local administrator
account (naming it administ), which is functional and whole even if my
network or the file server with the home directories is non-functional.
But Ubuntu gives me no choice but to create it in /home! So I let it
create it, then need to move it to *somewhere else* before I can make
/home refer to my server and activate my other accounts. I choose
/lhome (local home).

I use the Ubuntu System / administration / users and groups dialog to
change the home directory (This *is* the mainstream Ubuntu mechanism).
I guess I *could* create another administrator account, then change it
from there, then delete the second account. But I feel that somehow the
system should deal with this situation, not block out a valid change.

Regarding using the dialog vs. the command line stuff, I grew up
editing UNIX configuration files such as /etc/passwd and /etc/group,
creating home directories with mkdir. man explained the actions of
each command, and each configuration file. Life was simple and
transparent. Today a plethora of dialog boxes provide magical access to
who-knows-what underlying mechanisms, and maintaining coherence of who-
knows-what interdependencies. I am afraid to change anything the easy
way, and instead use the provided dialogs. I fear that Linux is moving
toward Windows, where everything is opaque and based on hidden magic,
vs. UNIX where everything was transparent and intuitive to the most
casual observer. Because the dialogs are not well documented as to what
they do, one cannot manage the system the old way because you have no
way of knowing what to do any more.

Hiding the underlying mechanisms is a good architectural principle, but
I would prefer the simple transparent system with those clearly
identified as the system interfaces, perhaps with nice helpful graphical
applications whose stated role is to manipulate those system interfaces
in well defined and documented (transparent) ways to make the system
nice for those who cannot type. I like to be in control and secure that
I can make the system work. Otherwise I might as well buy Windows,
where everything is easy, confusing, seems to encounter unanticipated
situations and malfunctions or doesn't

 SUMMARY:

After graphical logon notification area gets scrambled. Icons are in
terrible mess. Some of them are overlapping others. Sometimes network
manager icon is missing. Sometimes phantom icons show up. They can be
clones
of any other icons in the notification area. Bug affects any graphics
card:
 ATI, nVidia, Intel...

 WORKAROUND 1:

Run 'killall gnome-panel' from the terminal or Gnome's Run dialog. The
 panels will automatically respawn correctly.

 WORKAROUND 2:

When you get your icons distorted right-click on the affected panel (not
icons) click Properties. In Panel Properties change panel orientation
to
Left or Right and back to Top or Bottom. In my case all icons are
displayed properly, but one (nm-applet) is missing.

 WORKAROUND 3:

Right click the Gnome panel and remove the offending applets and re-add
 them, i.e. Indicator Applet, etc.

I think it's important to note that because of this problem, the
program does NOT continue in the case of making multiple copies

Whenever Brasero is started, you have the option of copy or make
multiple copies. With this bug it CANNOT achieve this task because it
hangs on 'ejecting disc. Someone took my bug down, pointed me here,
and truncated all the particulars which I just described.

I don't understand why it doesn't have the permissions to eject the

[Bug 696696] [NEW] Search for metadata is not possible

2011-01-02 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Search for description or tags gives no result.

A local filter by the filter bar (below the image) does work as
expected; problem is that this filtering is only projected on the given
folder, thus no sub-folders.

gThumb 2.11.3

[Bug 696697] [NEW] Tags are not visible under properties

2011-01-02 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

When an image has tags attached, these are not visible under the
properties pane. This would be very helpfull when organizing images to
provide a quick and complete overview.

[Bug 696698] [NEW] Multi-select metadata change is not possible

2011-01-02 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

When selecting multiple images, the metadata-button is greyed out. Thus
it is not possible to change the metadata of several images in one
action.

When organizing bulk images, this feauture would enhance efficiency
tremendously.

It would be nice if at least the following metadata could be changed by
multi-select: description, place, tags.

[Bug 696699] [NEW] Disabling filterbar should disable filter

2011-01-02 Thread markba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

When the filterbar has an active filter and the filterbar is hided, the
filter is still active. The problem with this is that the user has no
clue why images are not shown. It would be better to disable filtering
(setting to 'All files') when disabling (=hiding) the filterbar,
possibly with a messagebox to explain what is happening.
