[Bug 433928] Re: gdm-binary[2671]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

2011-04-22 Thread Robotex
I have the same problem in 11.04.

System starts and propose me enter login password in console, but I can't do
it, because console hidden by violet screen (without Ubuntu logo and progress
bar). So I must wait about 10 minutes for gdm start.
I can load in recovery mode (and must hope that Ubuntu not hang on load), enter
login and password in console and then type sudo /etc/inid.t/gdm start (I'll
see text on gdm's loading: unable to find users :no seat-id found) and gdm
starts. What's wrong.
It started when I install video driver.

[Bug 768876] [NEW] terminal autocompletion adds space after cp target folder using Tab

2011-04-22 Thread Ascurion
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When using cp or mv the tab auto-completion of the target folder
adds a space after the autocompleted folder name. This makes the
navigation to sub-folders cumbersome since one has to delete this
additional space first. I found this change in behavior after upgrading
from Maverick 10.10 to Natty 11.04 beta 2. An example is:

cp someFile Doc[pressing Tab] - cp someFile Documents[additional
Space]

[Bug 3923] Re: Cannot change default character encoding

2011-04-22 Thread marcobra (Marco Braida)
I want use Utf8 as default coding and i cannot get it as default at terminal
starting
my locale is correctly configured but i always get as default encoding
ANSI_X3.4-1968

A work around on Ubuntu 10.04.2

cd .gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/global/
mv %gconf.xml $HOME/.

I do a logout and then i login before login i set/check the lang setting
from login screen option (gdm) and

.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/global/%gconf.xml

was recreated and now from terminal i can have Utf8 as default.

Hope this helps

[Bug 740864] Re: Find result is too light gray

2011-04-22 Thread Paul Sladen
There are at this stage three main options:

  a. Leave as-is (0.1.8.13): Selected text looks better during search-
replace, but black-on-orange highlighted when another application is
open. The borders are thinner and there the 'pixmap' theme engine is
also loaded. (There is no risk of a crash).

  b. Fix properly: Figure out the real solution for Gedit, where the
selected text remains readable when Gedit Search-and-replace is open,
and returns to the defocused grey state when a different application is
focused. This would solve the bug in a clean way.

  c. Partial revert: Drop the 'gedit.rc' changes introduced in
0.1.8.13 all-together. This would return to the previous status-quo of
(0.1.8.12), without solving the highlighting being defocused when
search+replace is open, and would require further re-evaluation later.
It would drop the pixmap library loading (again, not a crasher, but
increases the RSS size).

In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to present them all to the
release team and let them choose based on the delta-size and impact,
with guidance documented here on usability, style, and technical/code
sanity from those in a position to give the relevant input. At the
moment we don't have all three options, and don't (I feel) have enough
expert input.

PS. Vish: Bug #767531 was filed to provide status-tracking of the
proposed merge being signed (I'm uncomfortable signing things at this
stage where there is not a corresponding bug report to provide a
feedback/tracking/audit path). There is no Ayatana-Design line in this
case, and it had not gone via the Ayatana-Design process.

1. the release is closed now
2. it can't go as a 0day-sru, because we would have to have a clear definition
of what to put in, and a clear test plan, and do that for the next week before
the release; i don't see that happen right now
3. so it's an SRU, a normal one, with a complete change description, a test
plan, test packages, etc.

I invite you to continue commenting on the bug to provide that
information.

In terms of scope for the change, being an SRU it can only fix real
problems, so: reverting to gray to make sure unfocused windows are not
mistakenly taken for focused ones, and cimi's changes to make sure the
scrollbar is still usable.

[Bug 768900] [NEW] evince not indexed / launchable from unity dash

2011-04-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

The Unity dash doesn't seem to index evince. Invoking the dash and searching
for 'evince' or 'viewer' or 'pdf' or 'document viewer' doesn't show evince in
the list of resulting applications. For other applications in general, either
the executable name or the friendly name are both sufficient for finding an
application (e.g. either 'palimsest' or 'disk utility' find the same
application).
As a workaround, you can start evince from a command line, or launch it
indirectly by opening a PDF from e.g. nautilus and then right click the icon in
the launcher and selecting 'Keep in launcher' once it's running.

[Bug 768912] [NEW] Thumbnails for JPGs sometimes replaced with generic JPG icon

2011-04-22 Thread Michael Hendry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'd previously noticed that when I open a folder of JPG images some of
the images have thumbnails displayed, and some just have an icon with
the letters JPG, and thought it might be related to the different
software being used to create the different images.

Today I've been scanning a batch of 35mm slides using my Nikon scanner,
and find that this affects 5 out of 18 images I've scanned in. The files
are all in the 700Kb to 1.6 Mb size range, and size doesn't seem to be
the issue.

[Bug 768900] Re: evince not indexed / launchable from unity dash

2011-04-22 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Evince was hidden from the menu before, and unity seems to honor the
NoDisplay=True setting. It has been debated upstream (see the linked bug
report) whether this is reasonable for the Gnome Shell. I'm marking it as
Opinion for now because it is a rather fundamental question, whether this is
really be a bug or not -- maybe someone from the Ubuntu desktop team can
comment on what the consensus is on this... A similar bug report has been
closed as invalid a long time ago
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/123397), but maybe we
should think about it again for unity because I do not see any disadvantage in
being able to start evince from the dash (in contrast to classic Gnome where it
adds clutter to the menu).
The question is: What is the usecase for opening evince directly? Correct me if
I'm wrong but the only one I'm seeing is using the recent documents entry in
the file menu -- in contrast to many other applications that you can start
directly, you can't for example create a new document in evince. With all the
zeitgeist goodness this should not be needed anymore because you can access the
recent documents directly from the dash.

BTW: All this applies to other applications as well, most notably the
shotwell image viewer and eog.

[Bug 745556] Re: nautilus ssh connection after suspend to ram - browsing location lost

2011-04-22 Thread donquixote
A little workaround:

7.d) For each of the remote nautilus tabs, click Home. Then unmount the ssh
connections (in the side pane).
This prevents the tabs from being closed.

8.d) For each of the previously remote nautilus tabs, click the Back button.
Yeah!

Anyway, this is not a satisfactory solution.

Btw, often when I unmount an ssh connection with Nautilus, it will
directly ask for the password to reconnect. Strange, that is.

Yes, I find the same behavior using ls,rm,ln,mkdir. However, I just saw
that for commands to open programs, e.g. acroread or gimp, the behavior
is normal adding a \ after folders when giving a additional variable,
i.e. a file to open, to the program in the command line using the tab
completion. Strangely, also the command more does behave normal,
while less does not.

[Bug 768876] Re: terminal autocompletion adds space after cp target folder using Tab

Following your comment that the problem could stem from Adobe Acrobat, I
just removed the Acrobat Reader package from my system. You were right,
now the bash-completion does behave normal. So the problems really seems
to come from Adobe Acrobat.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
 apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't
allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
 /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 768900] Re: evince not indexed / launchable from unity dash

2011-04-22 Thread Chad A. Davis
I agree in that case that this is an opinion. And the use case in
question is exactly the one you mentioned: accessing the recent file
list. That this can be accomplished in one preferred manner, does not
mean that the other ways need to be hidden, though. This is inconsistent
with other applications: the recent files menu does not show me recent
web pages; for that I need to open the browser, and I need to open the
correct browser and not a different browser. Because of this, many users
associate the document/page/image that they see with the application
used to view it. When I want to re-edit a recent word processing
document, I first open Open/Libre-Office; when I want to listen to a
song again, I start by opening Banshee/Rhythmbox, not by checking the
recent files in the dash.

It does make sense, when browsing a menu, that small utilities be
hidden, for the sake of saving space. However, the new design of the
Unity dash eliminates the need to make exceptions in order to save
space. In Maverick I used Gnome Do or Kupfer to launch applications
because of the nice experience that it provided, which we now have in
Unity. Gnome Do and Kupfer index Evince, because they don't need to
hide it in order to not be overwhelming.

The rhetorical question: why should we permit something that we haven't
foreseen is contrary to what makes the Unix approach flexible, which is
that having things behave consistently not only allows users to define
their own work habit, but also allows them to come up with workflows
that go beyond what developers originally had in mind. It makes for a
very inconsistent user experience to have these exceptions. Of course,
they will be retained for the classic desktop, but do we really need to
save so much space in unity, when we have the nice search facility?

A final use case to demonstrate the inconsistency: delete Firefox from
the launcher and try to add it back: open the dash, search for firefox
or browser and drag the application icon and drop it on the launcher.
Done. Now delete the Home folder from the launcher and try to add it
back: search for home or folder or even nautilus, no results. Even
if you find the *.desktop file and drag it to the launcher, it is
rejected. I think this inconsistent user experience will make unity more
unpredictable than it needs to be and may negatively impact adoption of
unity.

[Bug 766882] Re: [apparmor] evince need access to /dev/.udev/data/b

2011-04-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
1. When people use evince, apparmor spams the syslog.

2. This has not been fixed in Oneirc (which isn't open yet)

3. Patch is very small:
- /dev/.udev/db/* r,
+ /dev/.udev/{data,db}/* r,

4. TEST CASE
$ evince /usr/share/doc/shared-mime-info/shared-mime-info-spec.pdf
$ tail /var/log/kern.log
...
Apr 22 13:38:09 sec-natty-amd64 kernel: [ 72.743938] type=1400
audit(1303497489.238:24): apparmor=DENIED operation=open parent=1342
profile=/usr/bin/evince name=/dev/.udev/data/b252:1 pid=1469 comm=evince
requested_mask=r denied_mask=r fsuid=1000 ouid=0

5. Regression potential is very low, we are only adding access, not
taking away.

[Bug 769184] [NEW] screen locks after suspend despite gconf-editor setting

2011-04-22 Thread Krister
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

1. In gconf-editor, uncheck the box /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock_on_suspend.
2. use the power button in the upper corner of unity to choose suspend.

See that the setting is ignored, i.e. the screen is locked.

suspend the machine, it is not locked upon resuming.
