[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-15 Thread Rachel Greenham
[x] option to show the damn global menu all the time

i believe that was the original complaint here; recently there's been
all these other options thrown in like someone *wanted* to muddy the
issue. LIM fwiw is a cute variation on the theme of having the menu on
the window, but which is just going to introduce more difficult design
decisions that kicks everything further down the road (what to do about
important window-title text especially if there's a no-autohide option,
what to do when the window gets narrower than the menu...) to which the
answers are going to be, in short, complex behaviour and clutter.

We just wanted the menu to not auto-hide. How can that be taking
*years*? Time is not silencing the argument here!

And there's little point in repeating this isn't a place to vote when
there *isn't* a place to vote. So we'll continue to say it here, so it's
recorded, somewhere.

Public bug reported:

When selecting a jpg image and launching image viewer for a fullscreen

then ubuntu crashes: the screen displays a rapidly scrolling series of
command lines and responses until the PC is forcibly (manually) closed
down.

fwiw i'd also say that for consistency's sake leave the default as-is -
not least for the reviews, where you'd have a choice between They
changed the way menus work *again* and While the default menu
behaviour remains the same as before, there are now some user-
configurable options to answer long-held criticisms.

System and installation:

Unfortunately could not get wakeonlan to work whit

PCI ON ( PME ) clients will startup again immediately after
shutdown ( there is 0.5 seconds power off state!!),
SO no way to do POWER OFF except 5 second

Original bug reports:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/1005292

I'm using a freshly installed Precise on a fairly old computer.

eog: 3.4.1-0ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: 1:0.0.16+git20111201+b5534a1-1build2

The problem is that eog shows a black stripe in some of my jpg pictures. I
think the position of the stripe depends on the resolution of the picture. If
the resolution is high the stripe is located close to the top, if it's medium
the stripe is in the middle. If the resolution is low then there is no black
stripe. Please take a look at the sample images.

I used the printscreen button to create the eog version of the images.
There is no problem with other image viewing tools.

Sample images:

/eog-version_2.png

First I reported this as a Gnome bug on bugzilla.gnome.org but after
some investigation it turned out that this problem only occurs with the
nouveau driver. There is no problem with the official nVidia (173)
driver.

There are two main use cases for Close() on a MUC not actually leaving
the room:

• If Empathy crashes, MC calls Close() on all channels it was handling. I'd
rather not leave all the channels on my IRC proxy when that happens. (This is
Idle bug #24273.)
• Marco is in an XMPP MUC with three of his friends, who sporadically discuss
Aqua. He doesn't want to have the conversation window open constantly,
cluttering his desktop, but wants to be in the room in case someone says
something.

If we make Close() not actually leave the room (depending on
RemoveMembers() for that) it needs to be opt-in until Telepathy 1.0. Rob
suggests adding a property for this behaviour which could be requested,
or set by the handler.

That means the channel requester has to know whether the handler
supports this new method. I wonder whether we could use
http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/spec/Client_Handler.html#org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Client.Handler.Capabilities
for this? Technically it's imperfect, because if you have two handlers
installed—one with and one without this feature—the CM can't tell them
apart. But it might be good enough.

[Bug 1002537] Re: Shotwell Send To Email doesn't attach multiple photos

2012-09-15 Thread Ed Comer
This is a definately shotwell bug. I have verified with the test script
below. Simply selecting multiple photos will only result in one photo
being mailed. To get around the bug, the only known workaround is to
transform them at the SendTo dialog by scaling them. If they are already
too small to scale, the bug will remain, thus scaling will have to occur
to workaround the bug.

--TEST-SCRIPT---
#!/bin/sh
# replace nautilus-sendto with the test script. nautilus-sendto is
# found in your executable path. Remember to save the original
# nautilus-sendto for restoration after tests.

[Bug 1041930] Re: Cannot navigate in nautilius using touchscreen of Asus Slate ep121

2012-09-15 Thread Marko Obert
It seems, when I touch once the screen with my finger the mouse
(Microsoft Comfort Mouse 4500) got to the state clickhold and can not
be released from this state anymore, even when I unplug it fiscally.

To illustrate this I've made a screenshot of the shutdown dialogue,
where you can see, that when I hover over the dialog the text get
selected, even it I don't press the left mouse button.

And my impression is, that only GTK(3) aplications are affected by this
bug.

[Bug 1051371] [NEW] Can't play files with apostrophe in file name

2012-09-15 Thread Nate Wiebe
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 12.10 with all updates. Running totem 3.4.3.

Tried playing a song from the Black Mesa Source soundtrack titled We've Got
Hostiles.
It shows up in totem as three tracks:
- We've
- Got
- Hostiles.mp3

The files cannot be played simply because it thinks it's looking for:

- /home/nate/Desktop/BMS - Soundtrack/We've
- /home/nate/Desktop/BMS - Soundtrack/Got
- /home/nate/Desktop/BMS - Soundtrack/Hostiles.mp3

After some testing, it's due to the apostrophe. I don't remember this
being an issue in 12.04.

[Bug 964339] Re: Can't Connect to MSN

2012-09-15 Thread markba
Please upgrade to a recent version first (stable 3.4 series or unstable 3.5
series) - 3.3.92 is an old unstable development version.
A I indicated before, I'm using a stable version 3.4.2.3 (stock Ubuntu 12.04),
*not* a development version; so as far I can see, that would be OK.

And what is the source of the assumption that I'm using 3.3.93? Is that
from the attached log file? In that case, version numbering in that file
is wrong I guess.

[Bug 904323] Re: [Printing] White-margins problem

I revert what I said just above: this bug report is no duplicate at all.

The proportion of space margins take upon printing is just too large --
margins are not intended to be _that_ wide.

Anyone else suffering from the same issue, needing to enable select
page size using document page size ?

[Bug 871133] Re: Ubuntu Oneric Volume Step Can Not be Changed

2012-09-15 Thread George
Woop woop! Confirmed on Ubuntu 12.04!
After the restart did something funny as I tried to turn the volume down to 0
and then I lost everything.
Run alsamixer again and check for any MM label below any channel. This means
the channel is muted. Hit m on keyboard to turn MM to 00 (means
open=working). Once I did this I could turn the volume from my keyboard from
all the way down to 0 to 100%.

Thanks bdantas a LOT !!!

[Bug 1051402] [NEW] keybindings using the Super key stopped working in 12.04

2012-09-15 Thread Mindaugas Jakutis
Public bug reported:

12.04 suffers from a keybinding regression (both in media-keys plugin
and custom commands)

I realise some of the bindings are used by Unity (like Super+A/D/F/N/S/W... )
The problem is other keys stop working _after some time_: it seems that Super
loses it's modifier function, i. e., pressing Super+C is the same as just
pressing 'C' – it starts the type-to-search function on some dialogs.
Interestingly, some bindings seem not to be affected at all (Super+R).
Key-bindings *do* work when an additional modifier is used (e.g. Shift+Super+C).

Tried setting the bindings with both gnome-control-center and dconf-
editor.

Using an updated Ubuntu 12.04 64bit with Unity and vanilla drivers from
nvidia.com

gnome-settings-daemon: 3.4.2-0ubuntu0
Apologies if this is the wrong package...

[Bug 869793] Re: Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

2012-09-15 Thread Norbert
I have a folder with sub-folders (173,844 items, totalling 11.4 GB). Nautilus
opens this folder very slowly.
I like Nautilus because of tortoisehg-nautilus package and simple interface.

I agree with #7.

[Bug 1051417] [NEW] sleep-display for battery vs AC in GUI

2012-09-15 Thread Donjan Rodic
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 12.04
Hardware: ThinkPad X230

Rationale: Being able to set different screen-inactive-times (-blank and lock)
when on battery vs. AC is quite useful, for example 3-5 min vs. 20 min.
Earlier versions of the power manager settings allowed this distinction, the
current one (System Settings - Brightness and Lock) doesn't anymore (only for
lid/critical actions in System Settings - Power).

Observed behaviour:
The corresponding dconf keys are
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.sleep-display-ac
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power.sleep-display-battery

Editing these seems to work after rudimentary testing, but also changes
the Turn screen off when inactive for in Brightness and Lock to
Never, regardless of which values are set. Changing the latter in turn
sets both keys to the same value, which destroys the customisation.

Expected behaviour:
The Brightness and Lock should partially have a column for AC and battery each,
like the Power settings do.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-09-15 Thread Aleve Sicofante
@Rachel Greenham: I couldn't agree more with you. We need to solve one
single issue first: show the global menu all the time, then proceed with
caution for any other options.

Just a few comments/suggestion on the main and secondary issues:

- Showing global menu permanently will hide the title of the window. I'd
suggest it to be shown whenever the mouse goes to the top of the screen
anywhere where there's no menu: for instance, the top-left corner.
Throwing the mouse there will do two things: show the title and position
the mouse over the close-window button. But throwing the mouse to the
top of the screen to the right of the menu (maybe including the
indicators area), will reveal the window title.

Regarding LIMs:

what to do about important window-title text especially if there's a
no-autohide option

- A similar aproach to what I suggested above: reveal the window title
whenever the mouse is over non-menu areas (and of course by pushing a
certain key, such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, etc.)

what to do when the window gets narrower than the menu...

- Whatever has been done for 20+ years with the classic menu bar in the
window. This is not a new problem.

The problem I can see arising with menus on the title-bar is how to grab
the window for moving it around.

But AGAIN: the primary concern NOW is having the global menu permanently
visible. It's a serious usability issue that needs urgent attention.

[Bug 1051448] [NEW] Empathy cannot correctly use IPv6 Local Link addressing.

2012-09-15 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Avahi provides presence information using IPv6 local link (FE80)
addressing, and the remote machine can be seen in People Nearby... but
trying to send a message returns an error.

Connecting with telnet shows that the service is available.

My guess is that it doesn't handle specifying the interface correctly

[Bug 1051449] [NEW] Contacts that go offline aren't hidden again

I've set empathy to hide offline contacts. Although, when someone that's

Hide offline contacts option doesn't affect this. They only vanish if
I restart the app.

I'm running Empathy 3.4.2.3 under Mint 13 with MATE 1.2.

** Affects: empathy (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1051447] Re: Filenames that contain an apostrophe before a space in the name won't open from context menus

2012-09-15 Thread Alvaro Leal (Effenberg0x0)
It also affects me, I have tested it in two up-to-date Quantal testing
machines.

We have tested and discussed this bug originally at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2058395 . It's easily
reproducible, but there are some instructions at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12240946postcount=2 if needed.

[Bug 1051371] Re: Can't play files with apostrophe in file name

2012-09-15 Thread Edward Donovan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1051447 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1051447

Bug 1051447 is about this same problem, it seems. That one's assigned
to glib. It probably is that general, 'cause it's happening in
naultilus too. (See bug 1048454; I may dupe that one, too.) So I'm
going to mark this a dupe of bug 1051447. I think you'll agree; change
things if you don't. Thanks.
