[Bug 847001] Re: Adjusting display brightness is very slow on several Dell laptops
I'm experiencing this too, using Ubuntu 13.10 on Dell E6530 laptop. After pressing Fn+up/down, nothing happens for 1-2s, then the brightness is changed, then the OSD for it pops up. I can only change the backlight in steps with this frequency. During that waiting, the whole system (terminals, mouse, keyboard, ...) becomes sluggish, CPU meter does *not* go up. I don't remember to change anything related since the install. The backlight stepping works find on the older Dell V13 laptop using Ubuntu 13.04 (though it had its own problems in the past -- one direction keypress behind). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/847001 Title: Adjusting display brightness is very slow on several Dell laptops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/847001/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1239087]
Thank you for your commits, David! I installed all build-dependencies on my Ubuntu 14.04 system with 'apt- get install build-dep', did a 'git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/udisks', did './autogen.sh', did 'make', did 'sudo checkinstall make install', verified that I have udisks 2.1.3 installed with 'apt-cache policy', did 'mv /usr/local/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks2.policy /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/' and rebooted my machine. Please note: automount is disabled. What I get after reboot? 1. for USB-HDDs (both drives have EXT4 and NTFS partitions) 1.1. Seagate - 'Safely remove drive' option in Nautilus spinned-down it, gnome-disks spinned-down it after click on 'Power off the drive'. The 'udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdX' works too. If I enable automount, the 'Safely remove drive'/'Power off the drive' spins-down my drive. It's very good! 1.2. WD - 'Safely remove drive' option in Nautilus spinned-down it, gnome-disks 'Power off the drive' and 'udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdX' works too. But there is a little difference - if I enable automount the 'Safely remove drive'/'Power off the drive' does not spin-down the disk (disk plates rotating, but device is removed from system), I reopen the bug because of this. 2. for USB-flashes There is no 'Safely remove drive' option in Nautilus for my USB-flashes. After 'Eject' the parent device remains in system and may be powered-off by gnome-disks. For me it's a good compromise between udisks1 and udisks2 behavior. I'm ready to test and collect logs of my WD USB-HDD. I can't understand why Seagate drive unmounts all partitions before power-off, but WD does not. What logs can help you to understand the problem? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-disk-utility in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1239087 Title: Safely remove is not working (or broken) in Gnome Disks To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-disk-utility/+bug/1239087/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

It seems that my english is not perfect. I'm sorry. Let's consider only WD-HDD. Let me see if I understand this correctly: 1. Manually unmount, then power-off via the Disks GUI works as expected. Yes. 2. The safely remove drive button in Nautilus does not work as expected. No. It works as expected on other drives, but not WD. Is that about right? Yes and no. Safely remove (in Nautilus) and Power off (in Disks) works as expected only if I manually unmount all WD partitions before Safe removal / Power off. If I unmount all WD partitions manually and then do Safe removal / Power off HDD spins down.
[Bug 1239087]
Thank you for reply, David! I have an idea of what's wrong here but before I speculate on that, what exactly does enable automount mean? Are you referring to having the 'auto' option in the /etc/fstab file? By enable automount I mean these dconf-editor parameters: org.gnome.desktop.media-handling.automount and org.gnome.desktop.media- handling.automount-open (see comment #5). So if I set both parameters to true (in dconf-editor) I get all two partitions of my drive mounted in Nautilus on device connection. (In reply to comment #20) OK, I'm interested in output of /var/log/messages when it doesn't work with the WD. Or is that what you posted in comment 15? I tested it again - the log in comment 15 represent both situations - when drive spinned-down and when it does not. Only timestamps differ, messages order is the same. With udisks1 this WD-HDD spins-down (by Safely remove in Nautilus or Power off in Disks) even if all partitions mounted, with udisks2 it does not. There is a little difference between udisks1 and udisks2 powering off drive algorithms. What other log-file can I attach to help you to understand the problem? Your testing with udisks1 is on an older version of Ubuntu (12.04 vs. 14.04) isn't it? If so, any chance you can install the udisks1 package on the same OS as you tested with udisks2? The packages are parallel- installable (and called 'udisks' and 'udisks2') so it should be as simple as 'apt-get install udisks' and then run udisks --detach /dev/sdX. I'm asking for this because I think this is due to a kernel and/or ntfs- 3g problem. Another thing to try would be to see if it happens if the filesystem type is *not* ntfs, e.g. try with ext4. (I realize this may not be possible as you may not want to reformat the disk.) To recap, the only difference now from udisks1 is that udisks2 does not send SYNCHRONIZE CACHE before START STOP UNIT (it didn't work on any of my devices when I make the recent udisks2 changes). (Hmm, the drives have can_stop=1 start_stop_type=shutdown so everything should be good. My guess is that it's the NTFS partition that is the culprit. Specifically, unmounting it via udisks somehow fails.) If you manually unmount the partitions, does powering down the drive work? Specifically, try this 1. Unmount all partitions using Disks - if that fails, try 'umount /dev/sdXN' from a terminal. Does that work? 2. Press the Power off button in Disks when everything has been unmounted. Does that work? After 'Eject' the parent device remains in system and may be powered-off by gnome-disks. For me it's a good compromise between udisks1 and udisks2 behavior. I'm ready to test and collect logs of my WD USB-HDD. I can't understand why Seagate drive unmounts all partitions before power-off, but WD does not. What logs can help you to understand the problem? [Bug 1131664] Re: The default apps should have standard menubars under Unity
I experienced same results with GNOME Shell 3.10.3. I have possibility only keyboard using Ubuntu with screen reader support. Now, how can enable for example the caret navigation support in Evince when I not using Unity? Caret navigation support need when a blind user want reading a pdf support with Evince the Orca Screen Reader. Usual, need provide keyboard navigation possibility. Visually impaired users only using keyboard and screen reader support, if entire not seeing the screen, not have possibility ofcourse to using a mouse. Please don't block other environments the available menubar accessing methods. Note: if I revert following patches, everithing works fine me with Orca screen reader: 0001-Port-to-GMenuModel-and-add-menu-bar.patch 0002-Remove-gtk_application_set_accels_for_actions.patch Me suspicious the second patch with keyboard accelerators related. Why need remove keyboard accelerators with menu items and other actions related? Testcase the actual version, only with keyboard and GNOME Shell: 1. Open a PDF document with Evince. This situation not presenting the screen any menu bar. Expected result: independent the desktop environment if the Evince application is the default application an Ubuntu release, need presenting a menu bar. 2. Press F10 key. Expected result: the GNOME style menu presenting (until the menu bar not awailable with GNOME Shell too). Actual result: if I using the F10 key, nothing happen, because you removed keyboard accelerators. 3. Try enabling the caret navigation support with F7 key. Expected result: a message window presenting to you would like enabling the caret navigation support. If you click Enable button, caret navigation support is enabled. Actual result: nothing happening. Please fix this issues. I now testing what happening when I reverted only the second patch, now Evince package is building my system. [Bug 1277013] Re: Launcher icon size missing from System Settings, Appearance
I see now that I had completely mis-diagnosed the problem. In fact the problem is that the system is reverting to Unity-2D and if I select 'Ubuntu' at login then it is still using 2D, so the issue is not with the settings at all (I assume that icon size is not adjustable on 2D). [Bug 1276072] [NEW] Language selection always falls back to English
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I upgraded two amd64 computers from 13.04 to 13.10, and discovered on both that the language is set to English (whereas I selected French language at the beginning of the upgrade). Moreover, each time I set it back to French, dragging both French (France and Canada) and some English (UK US) on top of the default English in the language selection list, default English comes back on top at next login. I even tried to modify my .pam_environment (in console mode) and the /etc/environment to set fr_FR as the default, no way: gnome-language- selector seems to force default English as default at each connection! Hopefully, I do understand English, but this is turning me mad. [Bug 1276072] Re: Language selection always falls back to English
Now this is strange. I see in /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log the entry Greeter sets language fr_FR, and it's not followed by any error message. Still, as you say, Language is not set in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer. Furthermore, since Language isn't set in /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer, accountsservice should fall back to the language in /etc/default/locale. So French (France) should be pre-selected at login. I wouldn't think that those warning messages in x-0-greeter.log are related. (I have one of those warnings myself.) OTOH I'm kind of lost. I tested with my own relatively clean Xubuntu installation (it's Xubuntu you are using, right?), and it behaves as expected in this respect. You could of course try to manually edit /var/lib/AccountsService/users/scheuer and add these lines: Language=fr_FR FormatsLocale=fr_FR.UTF-8 ** Package changed: language-selector (Ubuntu) = accountsservice (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: accountsservice (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to accountsservice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1276072 Title: Language selection always falls back to English To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/accountsservice/+bug/1276072/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1131664] Re: The default apps should have standard menubars under Unity
Hi, I think all gtk3 programs schould use the old gtk3.4-6 like menubar functions . Gnome 3 could easily create an dconf variable wich schould force the program too use gear menus instead of the menubar. Why not an scalable space area in the toolbar which would be 1px transparent normally and show on Gnome 3 shell gear menu's . Where lies the problem?? . Do somebody need an APP-MENU ??? I don`t. It would be better to have an MENUBAR or GAER MENU SETTINGS with MENUBAR as default. Have patched evince (already posted) file-roller and epiphany to MENUBAR ONLY . Instead of nautilus use nemo . If somebody likes to see the modified sources send me an PM. regards bluedxca93 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1131664 Title: The default apps should have standard menubars under Unity To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1131664/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1277180] [NEW] dotted rectangles remain drawn in window after copying a bunch of files
Public bug reported: I copyed a bunch of files from a Nautilus window into another by Ctrl+dragging and dropping them. Both windows were set with icons visualization, so when I (ctrl)dragged and dropped the icons, dotted rectangles were drawn and dragged, as expected. However, after dropping the files, which were succesfully copied, the dotted rectangles should have disappeared, but they remained, as if printed on the destination window. Neither by moving, nor by minimizing and remaximizing the window, could I get rid of the spurious dotted rectangles. Even while navigating to other folders, the dotted rectangles stay there. Even after resizing the window. Despite the contents of the window being redrawn and updated, the dotted rectangles are still there, and they move around while I move around the window, as if they were part of its contents. The only way to have them disappear is to completely close the window. Obviously this is not systematically reproducible. This doesn't happen often. Don't expect to be able to reproduce it by ctrl+dragging icons from a window to another. 99.99% of the times this won't happen. [Bug 1248303] Re: Regression: installing gutenprint printer driver fails
This is my first post here, I hope this is the right place for this. I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 x64, and I tried installing my printer Canon Pixma MP250. [Bug 1244338] Re: External tool won't run if Save is set to All documents
Going through the code I figured out the problem that is that is causing save to fail when set to All documents--a classic Python bug. If an item is deleted from a list while that list is being looped through, then it's like sawing off the branch of a tree you are sitting on. Here is the code: for i in range(len(docs)): doc = docs[i] ... docs.remove(doc) The code will break with 'list index out of range' if a list member is deleted. There is a simple fix--just reverse the direction of the loop: for i in reversed(range(len(docs))): I have submitted a patch that fixes both errors. Please head over to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=659437 and mark the bug confirmed if you are getting the error described in this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244338 Title: External tool won't run if Save is set to All documents To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1244338/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1277370] [NEW] Now used Aiatana design blocks Evince accessibility usage if the current session is not Unity
Public bug reported: Dear Developers, Since Evince 3.10.3-0ubuntu3 version used changes blocks Evince keyboard usage with accessibility related. To testing some testcases, please install gnome-shell and gnome-shell-extensions packages, logout and login the gnome-classic session. Two simple testcases if the used session is not Ubuntu (Unity interface), for example gnome, gnome-classic or gnome-flashback: 1. Launch Evince if you using for example gnome or gnome-classic session. 2. Press F10 key. Expected result with original upstream version: After F10 key press presenting a context menu with have possibility to use importanter functions (open, close, etc). Actual result: nothing happening after F10 key press. A testcase with Evince accelerators related: 1. Launch Evince. 2. Try opening a file with CTRL+O keystroke. Expected result with upstream 3.10.3 version: the file open dialog is presenting the screen after CTRL+O keystroke. Actual result: nothing happening. My conclusion is following with GNOME Shell environment and downstream patched evince 3.10.3-0ubuntu3 and 3.10.3-0ubuntu4 package version related: The evince 3.10.3-0ubuntu3 and higher versions killed the original upstream version available accessibility support. Visually impaired users using only with keyboard and screen reader support if entire not see the screen. To demonstrate this bad change, try following testcase: 1. Launch Orca screen reader with orca command. 2. Launch evince and opening a text containing pdf document (only images containing pdf file is not good now). 3. Try enabling the F7 keystroke the caret navigation support. Expected result with upstream version: a popup message dialog will be presenting the screen after F7 keystroke, and the user have possibility to click enable button. When caret navigation support is enabled, visually impaired users have possibility to read text-only pdf documents with Evince the Orca screen reader, full accessible way. Actual result with Ubuntu Trusty packaged version: when F7 keystroke is pressed, nothing happening. Impossible to enabling this function, so impossible reading a pdf document with arrow keys the Evince application and Orca screen reader, impossible to selecting only a part of a pdf file, etc. Now, I need reverting following patches and using own compiled evince package to I get full the awailable a11y support this application: 0001-Port-to-GMenuModel-and-add-menu-bar.patch 0002-Remove-gtk_application_set_accels_for_actions.patch If I understanding right the purpose of the second patch, this patch reverting keyboard accelerators with Evince awailable actions. If I using temporary my modified evince package, all wrote testcases passed right if I using gnome-classic session. [Bug 1277370] Re: Now used Aiatana design blocks Evince accessibility usage if the current session is not Unity
This patch restoring missing a11y support for Evince, but not an optimal way. Unfortunately if this patch applied a new version, will be kill Unity related doed menubar related modification. Need founding a more optimal solution to al desktop environments have possibility to use you wanted menubar possibility, but keep already upstream level awailable a11y support. I not see clear the concept. If an user using Unity and launching Evince, will be presenting a gtk.menubar style main menu, or an absolute different visually lookup main menu? I not have possibility to using Unity, because GNOME Shell environment is more accessible now with orca.
