[Bug 1718446] Re: Ensure wayland -> xorg fallback to the corresponding session
Here is a distro-patch approach that I think is reasonable with the 17.10 final freeze in mind: - https://code.launchpad.net/~osomon/gdm/fix-1718446/+merge/332145 - https://code.launchpad.net/~osomon/gnome-session/fix-1718446/+merge/332146 (the two branches are required for a complete fix). This is trying to conform to the expectation that fallback sessions have the same desktop file name, which according to Ray (upstream gdm) is how the fallback mechanism is supposed to function. While testing that approach, I found one minor gotcha: if, with wayland enabled, I intentionally select ubuntu-xorg, then disable wayland, then reboot, in the login screen no session is selected in the dropdown (because gdm ignored ubuntu-xorg). However this will still launch the ubuntu-xorg session by default (which effectively is the same as the ubuntu session), so all is good (except for the fact that no session appears selected in the dropdown). This has the advantage of retaining the "ubuntu-xorg" session selected by the user if wayland is re-enabled later, though. I didn't get feedback from upstream on that approach yet, although the discussion in the upstream bug report is pointing towards more substantial changes which will require more work and won't be ready in time for 17.10. If we choose to distro-patch I will continue to work on a cleaner solution that can be upstreamed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1718446 Title: Ensure wayland -> xorg fallback to the corresponding session To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gdm/+bug/1718446/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1722779] [NEW] Xorg session exits on login if nvidia modeset=1
Public bug reported: This may relate to this item in the changelog for this version of gdm3: * Drop 95_hide_x11_sessions_with_nvidia_kdms.patch: - No longer needed with nvidia-384 I noticed before this version that indeed, if I enabled modeset on nvidia-387 (which actually worked), I only saw the Wayland sessions in gdm, not the Xorg ones. I actually want Xorg sessions right now (For Reasons I Could Bore You With), but I thought I'd try enabling modeset again when I saw this. Instead what happens is, I see and can choose the Xorg sessions, but when I try to log in using GNOME on Xorg, it just returns back to the gdm login screen, after a pause of a few seconds. There's no obvious signs of an actual crash, in syslog or in /var/crash. I spot this though, during each attempted X session startup: Oct 11 12:39:07 fleetfoot gsd-xsettings[2515]: Failed to get current display configuration state: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist and Oct 11 12:39:21 fleetfoot gnome-shell[2816]: Failed to apply DRM plane transform 0: Invalid argument Oct 11 12:39:21 fleetfoot gnome-shell[2816]: Failed to apply DRM plane transform 0: Invalid argument Oct 11 12:39:21 fleetfoot org.gnome.Shell.desktop[2816]: Disabling glamor and dri3, EGL setup failed Oct 11 12:39:21 fleetfoot org.gnome.Shell.desktop[2816]: Failed to initialize glamor, falling back to sw Wayland session appears to be working fine FWIW, with nvidia-387. But previously I did have a couple of random-seeming system hangs using it, which is one of the boring reasons I'm still preferring Xorg on nvidia. [Bug 1720149] Re: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep
It just happened, so attached the crash file that was generated. NB: gnome-shell 3.26.1-0ubuntu2 mutter 3.26.1-1 libmutter-1-0 3.26.1-1 NB: I notice there's also a libmutter-0-0 installed, possibly a hangover from the original zesty install. but ldd $(which gnome-shell) indicates it's linked to libmutter-1.so.0 so it's presumably irrelevant. I've now removed it anyway. This was a bit of a messy event. It went something like this: Attempted to wake system (from displaysleep, wasn't suspended) It appeared at first to work! My session was there. But the displays config was wrong. I noticed that my 4K monitor had (again, I think it's *its* problem) woken up thinking it's a 1440p monitor. As this is usually fixed by powercycling it, I did so. The second monitor (actually the first in discovery order), which is *actually* a 1440p monitor, also went to sleep. Power-cycling *it* woke them both up, (I think; things got confusing) but at that point it came back to the gdm login screen. So I'm guessing around then was where the gnome-shell crash happened. Often it's simpler than that. I wake the system up, it comes up logged- out. ** Attachment added: "_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1720149/+attachment/4967524/+files/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1720149 Title: gnome-shell segv on wake from display or system sleep To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1720149/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
