I used the standard tools in Ubuntu 16 to format and encrypt a large USB
hard drive for storing secure backups to. I then used that drive with
the standard "Backups" tool to capture periodic backups.

My hard drive recently died, forcing me to re-install Ubuntu 16. The re-
install went well, but when I tried to attach the drive to restore my
personal files, a modal appeared, prompting me to enter my password.

So I did. And then it prompted me again. I thought I'd mistyped my
password, so I re-entered it, making sure my caplocks or numlock key
weren't on, but again, it prompted me. After each prompt, the full-
screen modal darkened the background until after a dozen attempts, my
background was almost completely black. I suspect what's going on is
something's trying to access the encrypted disk while I'm typing in the
password, and each access is triggering another prompt, effectively
locking me out of the system because it's impossible for me to enter a
nearly infinite series of prompts.

This bug is a huge problem for two reasons:

1. it locks you out of your computer
2. it prevents you from accessing secure storage and restoring your system

I managed to partially workaround #1 by switching to a terminal and
running `export DISPLAY=:0; gnome-shell --replace`. That caused Gnome to
reload, which minimized the modal program, allowing me to kill it in the
app thumbnail view.

However, that's a huge hassle, and I'm still unable to access any data
on encrypted USB drives, even when I enter the password correctly.
Please advise.

In bionic, /dev/log is now owned by systemd-journald.

This is ok; there are good reasons to want to do this.  (Timestamp
precision that's not dependent on the syslog protocol; logging available
earlier in boot and later at shutdown; unified queriability of logs
around services.)

The logfiles previously populated by rsyslog under /var/log are now
empty (no longer being updated, and the previous files logrotated away):

$ ls -l /var/log/auth.log
-rw-r- 1 syslog adm 0 Mar 25 00:06 /var/log/auth.log
$

This is also ok, we don't really want log data duplicated in two places
on the system; so since we now have persistent journal under
/var/log/journal, we don't want to also create these plaintext files by
default.

However, it's not clear that this is by design, rather than by accident.
rsyslog is still /configured/ to log to these files; it just isn't
receiving any data because it no longer controls the socket.

Dimitri and I have discussed that rsyslog should continue to function,
so that users who have remote syslogging configured can still make use
of this.  It looks like currently this is not the case, because journald
is not forwarding to rsyslog.

That is not ok.

What is also not ok is that, now that logs are only being written to the
journal by default instead of to syslog files, querying these logs by
syslog priority only works if you know the syslog facility by number
(and, afaics, you can only filter by one syslog facility at a time).  So
whereas before, you could find mail logs by looking in /var/log/mail.log
by default, you now have to know to run 'journalctl SYSLOG_FACILITY=2';
and if you want a view of what was previously in /var/log/syslog (i.e.
filtering out non-syslog systemd logs, it seems the most compact way to
express this is 'journalctl --system
SYSLOG_FACILITY={0,1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23}'.

This is really not good.  Admins have never needed to know the mapping
of symbolic names to facility numbers to work with syslog; this throws
away 30 years of convention with log handling.

If we are going to store the logs in the journal by default, I think
there needs to be a way to query the logs using symbolic names
consistent with syslog(3) and /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf.

I don't think we can release with things in the current state.

I tried to follow the directions in comment #52, but when I ran the
`ubuntu-bug` command, it didn't give me any output. So I followed the
instructions in comment #55, but although I do get the the searchable
histogram of top issues, I receive the error "Sorry, you are not a
member of a group that is allowed to see the data from error reports.
Please fill out this form to request access."

When I click that, it's asking me to consent to a legal disclaimer and
provide a bunch of personal information, including home address, which
seems excessive. I just want to report a bug, and if this isn't the
right bug to track, the proper procedure needs to be simplified.

I do have a crash file; can I just create a new ticket, tag the app
named in the crash file (apport-gtk), and attach it to the ticket?

1. Open the Settings app. Click Universal Access.
2. Enable the Screen Keyboard. (Optionally, turn on "Always Show Universal 
Access Menu" to make turning the Screen Keyboard on and off easier.)
3. Open Text Editor
4. Click the u button on the Screen Keyboard
5. Long-press the u button on the Screen Keyboard for a few seconds. On the 
popup, click the ü character.

What Happens

In Step 4, u is entered in the Text Editor document.

Nothing is entered in Step 5.

This bug affects any of the "extended characters" clicked on from the

  1. Open the Settings app. Click Universal Access.
  2. Enable the Screen Keyboard. (Optionally, turn on "Always Show Universal 
Access Menu" to make turning the Screen Keyboard on and off easier.)
  3. Open Text Editor
  4. Click the u button on the Screen Keyboard
  5. Long-press the u button on the Screen Keyboard for a few seconds. On the 
popup, click the ü character.
  
  What Happens
  
- In Step 4, **u** is entered in the Text Editor document.
+ In Step 4, u is entered in the Text Editor document.
  
  Nothing is entered in Step 5.
  
  This bug affects any of the "extended characters" clicked on from the
  long-press popup in the Screen Keyboard.

I'm experiencing this as well. When I try to install gnome-control-
center I get:

sudo apt install gnome-control-center

I haven't fiddled with anything, I haven't moved the dock... How can I
be missing colord, system settings? I've got to calibrate and profile a
new monitor.

I'm not a noob, I just install or update and work. I don't mess with
anything!

It's a little better now. There is no crash, but Ubuntu dock isn't working.

that massive texture leak any more.
