Can confirm this is an issue in ubuntu 18.04. Also affects Ubuntu Budgie
(reported it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntubudgie/+bug/1767264)
which uses the same window manager as gnome shell (mutter).
Animations/window dragging are locked to 60fps regardless of actual
monitor refresh rate while everything else (glxgears, etc.) works as
expected. This issue doesn't exist in gnome 3.28.1 in other Linux
distributions so is likely the result of some Ubuntu 18.04 specific
patches.

I think the info is stored; the problem is that GDM does not make use of

This happens sometimes (~70% to happen) after I upgrdaded my ubuntu to 18.04. 
After entering user & password I see only blank purple screen without anything. 
I was trying to wait for 30 minutes, but it seemed like nothing was happening. 
This problem affects gnome-session and ubuntu-session for me. 
I've also found that I'm not the only person who is affected.

@guido Nope, that one is irrelevant (that icon title is something
completely different, it's a legacy concept: the title of the window
whenever it's iconified; plus the change is in gnome-terminal's current
development series which won't appear in Bionic).

Anyway, I managed to locate the bug, see my previous comment. Now it's
Ubuntu's turn to apply the fix.

I made a comment over there. This patch is buggy, this is the one that
breaks my previous fix.

The patch is shipped by Ubuntu, named theme-use-gtk_render_icon_suface-
to-paint-button-icon.patch (intended to fix LP #1764558) inside
mutter_3.28.1-1ubuntu1.debian.tar.xz. Ubuntu should drop (or fix) this
broken patch to fix this problem.

Why don't we have both options? Why removing something that we like

(search)? I am trying to get used to this new behavior for almost a
week, but it is just slowing me down.

I have the same experience on my evolution.  I am using synology caldav
server (latest) and this hasn't been working for me for some time
(around a year or more).  I have been running the latest ubuntu, and
presently I'm on 18.04.  The attached log is from evolution v3.28.1-2
calendar-factory in debug-all mode.

Quick note, the attachment above yields an error message from evolution
that reads:

Cannot create calendar object: Failed to put data: HTTP error code 201
(Created): The server responded with an HTML page, which can mean
there’s an error on the server or with the client request. The used URI
was:
https://synology.wolffelectronicdesign.com:5006/calendars/Kirk/8fd98e334f3a02482f68b77a2cabf68f1efa4e24.ics

The new event does not show up in the calendar until I force a refresh
of the caldav account from evolution.  Note, if I attempt to modify a
calendar entry, and press 'save', I do not get an error.

[Bug 1769720] [NEW] Logged out when unplugging external monitors with screen locked and lid closed

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) 64-bit on a System76 Galaga UltraPro
laptop. At work, I plug two displays into my laptop, one DisplayPort and
one HDMI.

If, while both displays are plugged in and the laptop lid is closed and
the laptop's built-in display is therefore disabled, I:

1. lock my screen;
2. unplug both displays at about the same time;
3. wait about ten seconds; and then
4. open my laptop lid,

I find that I have been logged out.

If I immediately log back in to the built-in display, a couple seconds
after I log in, the screen locks. If I then immediately log out and log
back in again, the screen does _not_ lock.

It seems that this weird lock-right-after-login behavior is related to
the fact that I get logged out as described above. It seems that the
shell remembers that it is supposed to be locked despite the crash /
logout, such that when I log back in, it realizes that it's supposed to
be locked and locks itself.

Note that I am filing this bug as instructed in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-shell/+bug/1721428/comments/105: "BTW,
we have fixed many gnome-shell bugs with these symptoms recently in
Ubuntu 18.04. So please try 18.04 and log a new bug if you have any
problems."

I have this error occurring when I run the regular GNOME session.

In Ubuntu session, control panel works. In GNOME session, settings does
not launch. Launching "gnome-control-center" from terminal provides the
core dump message initially reported.

[Bug 1769695] [NEW] Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

I am using a fresh installed Ubuntu 18.04 on an RX 480 and an i5 7600.
3.28.0-0ubuntu1 is running. Normaly, everything runs fine, but lately
when I had some windows open (eclipse, Texmaker, Terminal, Firefox with
Youtube and other windows) the system suddenly was nearly frozen, I
could move the mouse and change active windows by ctrl+tab but not use
the keyboard e.g. for typing into windows or make any actions with the
mouse (e.g. open menues, click on menues, ..).

When I changed the session by Ctrl+Alt+F3 and then killed firefox,
everything worked again. I do not know whether this is a Firefox, a gdm
or a graphics driver issue. Since a program should not be able to make
the desktop crash at all, I suppose its not Firefox and so I post it
here.

/var/log/syslog around the time contains the following (even if it
contains some device removed code, I did not do anything with the cables
and am sure that there isn't a hardware defect with mouse and keyboard):

I am experiencing the same problem on bionic.

My system is an upgrade from artful.

The NFS shares are mounted at: 
/media/sharename 

I don't know whether it is relevant, but I am still using the Unity 7
desktop on bionic.

The shortcuts of the NFS mounts were visible in nautilus on artful,
where I was also using the Unity 7 desktop.

Jayatana, create a new menu items identifier any time we make an update
"sendAboutToShow". This can be traduced in a poor performance and create
a lot of noises and graphics glitches.

The idea is try to find a way to not create new menu items identifier
while the menu items are the same menu items between update cycles.

sorry for need updating this bug report, I had switched back to xorg
because of too many bugs in wayland. Now running bionic 18.04 which use
xorg by default. Can't say it is a bad decision, it feels like 17.10 was
for beta testing whereas not advertised as such.

After testing over a month, this gnome-shell issue on wayland was
tailored to clipboard-indicator use. It did not appear without this
extension. But this is clearly is gnome-shell issue (it should not crash
so easily and freeze the entire system).

Thank you for replying and for analysis.

1. On clean installation on physical hardware the behavior of Power Button is 
as follows:
* on console ttys system shutdowns
* on the GDM system goes to sleep (suspends)
* in GNOME session it asks what to do if run `gsettings set 
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power power-button-action interactive` 
manually (no GUI option - it is a bug 1769614 )

So seems to be expected behavior.

2. But if I run Ubuntu as VirtualBox 5.1 guest (this bug report):
* all settings are ignored (both `logind.conf` and `gsettings`).
* I do not have "When the Power Button is pressed" in `gnome-control-center 
power`

How to debug this? Should I report special bug to upstream?

More weird; the GUI does contain the feature you want, but upon looking
at the source code I found it is just named incorrectly:

So for now set it to "Power Off".

Yes, both are on 18.04.

I wonder why I can reproduce it on three computers with two ubuntu
versions, with both Nvidia and Intel and you cannot (post #6)... Just in
case it might matter, I have other desktop environments (Plasma, xfce)
also installed, but my session manager is set to gdm.

Additional info: I have a third computer which is still on 17.10 with
Nvidia graphics, and it also sports the same kind of buggy behaviour as
my post #8, so it seems this might be inherited from at least one prior
version. I reported the bug and assigned it to gdm because, well, when
the computer is apparently dead (step 3 in #8), if you SSH and do sudo
pkill gdm, then it dies, respawns and things go back to normal, no need
to reboot via REISUB when another computer is at hand.

Further info: I updated my main computer to 18.04. That one has Nvidia
graphics (updated to the latest nvidia-390 from PPA). Behaviour is
different, but buggy, too, as follows:

1. boot
2. Hit ctrl+alt+f3. Console shows. Log in. exit (log out).
Expected behaviour: return to gdm's graphical login screen with responsive 
keyboard and mouse.
Actual behaviour: the gdm's screen appears but keyboard and mouse are 
unresponsive... 
3. Hit ctrl+alt+f1. 
Expected behaviour: even if ttt3's screen seems corrupted, hopefully 
ctrl+alt+f1 would return to gdm's graphical login screen with responsive 
keyboard and mouse on tty1.
Actual behaviour: screen blanks. Computer is unrecoverable from keyboard and 
mouse. Only REISUB can reboot it again (alternatively, accessing it via SSH 
shows that the OS is still alive and well, but graphics are messed up).

In summary, both Intel and Nvidia behaviours, in two different
computers, seem buggy, although the actual behaviour is slightly
different for each case.

A bold conjecture: does GDM use Wayland or X? Is this caused by any
Wayland/X switching?

Doesn't that work-around only apply to Wayland, while the default GNOME3
desktop in Ubuntu 18.04 is Xorg?

I am on Intel graphics (xps13 i7-4500U HD4400).

I can still reproduce it... basically, at boot, Ctr+Alt+Fn do nothing
(behaviour steps 1 and 2 in #3). However, once you start a user's X
session the shortcut "activates"... if an X session is open, things go
as well (step 4). However, if such a session is closed, the shortcut is
still active (and the virtual console recognises keyboard commands) but
the screen does not show it (steps 6 to 8).
