This is an annoying bug that gives a very inconsistent experience.
Apparently affecting 21 people ... NO . this is affecting thousands of users,
it's just hard to google/find as a topic.
This deserves much higher priority.

 Title:
nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

 Status in GVFS:
   Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
   Fix Released
Status in “gvfs” source package in Precise:
   In Progress
Status in “gvfs” source package in Raring:
   Fix Committed

 Bug description:
   Impact:
copies from/to samba share often end up hanging

   Test case:
   - visit a smb location in nautilus
   - copies data from/to it (some non trivial directories makes the issues
 easier to trigger)
   - the copy should complete without hanging

   Regression potentiel:
Check that nautilus is still working correctly and than you don't have
issues copying data from/to remote locations

   ---

   Problem
   ===
Copying files to and from samba shares (this includes Windows shares) is
unreliable in Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.04 when using nautilus' integrated
samba client (gvfs-smb): The copy randomly hangs after a few files or a few
 GB.

   Workaround
   ==
Until gvfs-smb is fixed, use the kernel samba client (cifs) that works
reliably, is faster, but needs some terminal commands to get going:
   # sudo -s
   # mkdir /mnt/cifs
   # mount -t cifs -o user=YOUR_SAMBA_USER -o uid=YOUR_LINUX_USER
 //SAMBA_SERVER/SAMBA_SHARE /mnt/cifs
It will ask for you password, you can then access the shared files at
 /mnt/cifs.

[Bug 1157586] Re: Reduced File manager functionality when working with MTP device

2013-03-21 Thread AndreK
Regarding delete:
please check this out, and the comments below:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=696190

That's probably because the backend doesn't support trashing, which is the
Ctrl+Delete action (some distros might have patched that back to use Delete
instead). Shift+Delete triggers the Delete action, and my guess is that will
work too.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-18 Thread AndreK
hi all.
try two things: chaneg MTU from auto to 1500 or 1000
Disable jumbo frames on your switch.

Niticing that the problem happened when opening a video file, or with
massive/fast file access,
I changed MTU to 700, to see if it slowed things down and reduced the problem.
it seems so, I was even able to scan music collection - slowly, but with no
read errors.
Increased MTU to 1500 - and I still do not see problems.
Also: disabled jumbo frame support on my switch.
I *guess* that the bug is somehow sensitive to jumbo frames.

nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
I have a large directory, almost 50Gb and 45.000 files shared by samba
 on ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS server.
I used to copy the whole directory regularly on my desktop, and execute
a backup with deja dup on that.
I did also often backup directly from the samba share.
After upgrading my client to 12.10, copying the directory hangs
randomly, sometimes after having copied just 1 Gb, others having almost
 completed the whole transfer.
It just hangs, without any crash.

I noted the also Deja -dup shows the same behaviour, now it's impossible
to complete a backup from the share, it just hangs.
It seems to me that a bug in the samba client might be the cause of
these issues, since neither nautilus nor Deja-dup have problems with local
 large directories.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-17 Thread AndreK
using another file manager is not a solution.
backup tools, VLV, Mplayer, will still make gvfs-smb fail. and Rhythmbox will
wtill be unable to index a collection on smb server.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-01-21 Thread AndreK
I asked a question how to get some attention to a important bug -
during an chat with one of the guys from ubuntu. ubuntu on air

he told me I needed to contact developer team - easier said, than
done, after much searching I found mail address of somewhat significant
member, team admin. Sent mail, explaining that this is very important
to many users, business users, and very, very, discouraging to anyone
that tries Ubuntu at home and have som sort of network/NAS/server.

no response - that was 1 week ago.

[Bug 1077696] [NEW] mounted samba share stops working for file access

2012-11-11 Thread AndreK
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10 - same problem when acessing SMB shares from two computers
same for shares both on Ubuntu 12.10 server, and a windows server.

Reproduce;
it helps if you play a video/movie using vlc or mplayer from share. the file
should be open for hours. (use pause)
- when unpaused, the file will play fine.
-no new big files on that share will open, small files may work.
unmounting + remounting the SMB share may fixe the problem, but other
processes may be affected:
VLC - while stuck with such samba problem, is impossible to kill, same for
smplayer
sudo killall vlc -s KILL
.. will not kill it.
and so unmounting the share takes 10 attempts..

2011-10-20 Thread AndreK
Hi.
So far, I've run only one such backup with grsync on 11.10 - without problem. -
this could be random luck, or just no more bug.
-the 11.10 is clean installed, with only some application settings imported
(like .grsync settings)
I will do more testing soon, it would be nice if the problem proved to be gone.
Thank you.

only during copying.

[Bug 664643] [NEW] icons with white/black bars

2010-10-21 Thread AndreK
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Please see attached image.

This problem existed for a long time now, (several versions of Ubuntu).
Sometimes, there are two icons, yet is still only one jungledisk desktop
process (see screenshot).
Even more annoying, are the white bars above and below the icon.
Also, RealVNC server, have *black* bars above and below it's icon.

[Bug 664643] Re: duplicate icons and icons displayed with white/black bars in gnome panel

2010-10-21 Thread AndreK
Yes, it's completely reproducible I have 4 Ubuntu computers (2 workstations , 2
laptops, at home+work) - all have this problem.
I would say chances are that 80% of boots result in bad looking icon, and even
if it's ok, it can go bad after a while.

32bit Jungledisk: (I don't use 64bit)
http://downloads.jungledisk.com/jungledisk/junglediskdesktop_312-0_i386.deb
64bit Jungledisk
http://downloads.jungledisk.com/jungledisk/junglediskdesktop_312-0_amd64.deb

RealVNC: http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/download.cgi

I also attached a new screenshot, I just swapped between viewports - and
for some bizzare reason, one of the Jungledisk icons just got a nice
background.

I have also seen this happen to only up or down-side of the icon. - so
sometimes, there's only one white bar..

[Bug 664643] Re: duplicate icons and icons displayed with white/black bars in gnome panel

2010-10-21 Thread AndreK
Additional info (please see the comments I posted 1 minute ago)
just grabbed the top panel (ALT+LeftMouseDown) - then dragged it to right
monitor, then back.
Look at the attached image now... strange stuff :)
Switching viewports does not seem to mess up the icons, maybe it's only things
that redraw the panels / like RDP fullscreen..
(check out the attached file)

[Bug 575337] [NEW] power manager delays logon, and there is no batery icon

2010-05-04 Thread AndreK
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

during boot: (travelmate 4230)
after the proper background + mouse pointer is displayed, and sound plays it's
a 20-30 seconds delay before the login window appears.
after logging in , power-manager crash-window appears, the bizzare thing is
that in order to proceed with logon, I need to click logoff anyway.
Then after more delay, desktop appears, but panels are delayed.
finally panels appear, but no battery icon, starting power management takes
also *very* long time.
misc operationsnow-and then seem to be delayed by this problem.
