[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag in native terminal on Nvidia desktops with X11

2024-04-01 Thread Andreas Smas
I can confirm the issue (I am on ubuntu 22.04 nvidia + x11). gnome-
terminal, emacs and similar applications was lagging. Starting an
application that updated the screen continuously (such as glxgears)
seems to have alleviated the problem.

Downgrading mutter to from 42.9-0ubuntu7 (which I got in the latest
upgrade yesterday) to 42.0-3ubuntu2 (release, which was easy to get hold
of) seems to have fixed the problem.

[Bug 2046360] Re: Heavy stuttering in Firefox with mutter 45.1/45.2

2023-12-19 Thread Andreas Hasenack
mantic verification

I used mutter from mantic-proposed:
andreas@nsnx2:~$ apt-cache policy mutter
mutter:
  Installed: 45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0
  Candidate: 45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0
  Version table:
 *** 45.2-0ubuntu2~really45.0 100
100 http://br.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu mantic-proposed/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 45.2-0ubuntu1 500 (phased 0%)
500 http://br.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu mantic-updates/universe amd64
Packages
 45.0-3ubuntu3 500
500 http://br.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu mantic/universe amd64 Packages

I installed gnome-session gnome-shell-extensions. I did not install budgie,
because the test plan at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/Mutter
says it's not needed for 23.10.

Each login, I selected a different session from this list: GNOME, GNOME
Classic, Ubuntu, Ubuntu on Xorg.

In each session, I did:
- play 4k youtube video in full screen in firefox and chrome. For the next
steps, I left firefox playing that video while conducting the other checks
- verified that firefox was using hardware acceleration (chrome isn't, that's
known)
- sent a notification via notify-send, observed it was displayed
- did a large file copy with the file manager. First, locally, then over the
network using SMB.

I did not observe any stuttering during these verifications, nor any
other ill effect.

The hardware this was tested on is a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 with an
Intel Alderlake_p (Gen12) video system.

[Bug 2046360] Re: Heavy stuttering in Firefox with mutter 45.1/45.2

2023-12-19 Thread Andreas Hasenack
The DEP8 tests are green now.

I'm going to verify this revert for mantic, which is currently in
mantic-proposed. But note I have NOT been able to reproduce the stuttering in
firefox with the mutter package from mantic-updates (45.2-0ubuntu1). I tried:
- wayland
- xorg
- native resolution (2880x1800)) and 1920x1200
- youtube playback, full screen, windows, 4k resolution. I also observed
hardware acceleration was being used
- I have even set MUTTER_DEBUG_TRIPLE_BUFFERING to "auto" in /etc/environment,
which is what the bug description says should NOT be done.

[Bug 2038907] Re: Ubuntu patch incorrect disable the thunderbolt and security panels

2023-11-16 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Noble also has 1:45.0-1ubuntu3, with the same fix. This all started
before noble was released, hence the version collision, but I'm pretty
sure that throughout the devel cycle, noble will get a gnome-control-
center version bump, so no harm in releasing mantic with this version
now.

[Bug 1865226] Re: gdm-smartcard pam config needs to be updated for Ubuntu and installed

2023-09-06 Thread Andreas Hasenack
There is an sssd package in focal-unapproved that points at this bug,
with this d/changelog snippet:

  * debian/patches: Backport patches atches to support properly GDM smartcard
login (LP: #1865226)
(sic)

But there is no sssd task in this bug.

I also don't see a gdm3 upload to focal unapproved, nor gnome-settings-

Can somebody please clarify this situation? What is needed in focal to
fix this bug?

[Bug 1794064] Re: Clicking a hyperlink in a PDF fails to open it if the default browser is a snap

2023-07-06 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Looks like we get this if evince is update, apparmor is not, and a link
in a pdf is clicked:

Jul 06 18:36:59 j-evince kernel: audit: type=1400
audit(1688668619.304:78): apparmor="DENIED" operation="exec"
info="profile transition not found" error=-13 profile="/usr/bin/evince"
name="/usr/bin/snap" pid=2246 comm="env" requested_mask="x"
denied_mask="x" fsuid=1000 ouid=0

The end result seems the same: permission denied, link isn't opened, the evince
gui just does nothing, the console (if launched from a terminal) saya "env:
'/snap/bin/firefox': Permission denied

If Georgia can confirm this is the worst that can happen by not having
the Recommends on the updated apparmor profile, then I think it's ok to
leave it out, but would be good to have confirmation from @vorlon, as he
raised the objection and it's not clear if he saw Georgia's comment.

[Bug 1794064] Re: Clicking a hyperlink in a PDF fails to open it if the default browser is a snap

2023-07-06 Thread Andreas Hasenack
> Do we need evince to be reuploaded for jammy there since the previous
upload was rejected by Steve?

I'm trying to see what type of error we get if we load a profile with
such a rule and the target profile does not exist:

  /{,snap/core/[0-9]*/,snap/snapd/[0-9]*/}usr/bin/snap mrCx ->
snap_browsers,

Will it be worse than what we have now?
Will evince's postinst fail when it reloads the profile with the above line,
and snap_browsers is not defined?
Will it crash when a link in a pdf is clicked?

It's taking a bit to setup a jammy desktop vm to try this, and I have
other SRUs to process. Georgia, could you elaborate on what would happen
if the new evince were to be installed with an old apparmor that knows
nothing about the snap_browsers profile?

2023-06-29 Thread Andreas Hasenack
It's my understanding that this should be released together with gnome-
shell 42.9-0ubuntu2 which is currently in jammy-proposed.

gnome-shell 42.9 is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/2023913 and has been in jammy-proposed for 5 days, and is
still pending verification.

[Bug 1998286] Re: Release mutter 42.9 to jammy

2023-06-29 Thread Andreas Hasenack
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
There is a new bugfix release in the stable 42 series.
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/blob/42.9/NEWS

The overall GNOME project considers GNOME 42 to be end of life now and
there are no more scheduled releases for mutter 42 after 42.9

This is basically a prerequisite for GNOME Shell 42.9 LP: #2023913

The current version of Mutter in Jammy is 42.5.

  Test Case
  -
  Complete the test case from

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/Mutter

  Extra Test Case 1
  -
This release also cherry-picks a patch to fix the prompt to enable
accessibility features using keyboard shortcuts.

  0. Install the updated mutter packages. Then log out and log back in.
  1. Open the Settings app (gnome-control-center)
  2. In the left sidebar, click Accessibility
- 3. In the typing section, lick Typing Assist
+ 3. In the typing section, click Typing Assist
  4. Turn on the first switch to enable turning accessibility features on and
off using the keyboard
  5. Close the Settings app
  6. Press the Shift key 5 or 6 times in a row
  7. You should see a system prompt about turning on Sticky Keys

  What Could Go Wrong
  ---
Mutter is an essential component of the default Ubuntu desktop and for the
desktop used by Ubuntu Budgie.

A severe enough bug could mean that people are unable to use their
  desktop version of Ubuntu.

Smaller bugs could interrupt people's workflows.

mutter is part of GNOME Core and is included in the GNOME micro release
  exception

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/GNOME

  Other Info
  --
Upstream assumes that people will be using matching versions of mutter and
gnome-shell. To be cautious, I therefore bumped the dependency version in GNOME
Shell 42.9 to require mutter >= 42.9 (even though GNOME Shell 42.9 appears to
run ok with Mutter 42.5). I believe the only way to make the dependency
relationship work the other way (not allow Mutter 42.9 with GNOME Shell 42.5)
requires bumping the Breaks version but I don't think it's worth using Breaks
unless necessary.

This release will also enable AMD Xilinx/Mali support on Wayland. See
https://ubuntu.com/download/amd-xilinx or private bug 1961563 or the
  42.6 release notes.

[Bug 1794064] Re: Clicking a hyperlink in a PDF fails to open it if the default browser is a snap

2023-06-29 Thread Andreas Hasenack
evince and apparmor for lunar should be released together to fix this
bug, but there is still a DEP8 failure that needs clearing under
apparmor: libreoffice/armhf

https://ubuntu-archive-team.ubuntu.com/proposed-
migration/lunar/update_excuses.html#apparmor

It was retried a few times already, but still fails. This is a very long
test, 5-6h, andlibreoffice/armhf is already in the big_packages DEP8
queue, which gives it a bigger VM.

I triggered it one more time.

Ah, and besides that, apparmor has been in proposed for just 5 days, not
the required 7.

[Bug 2020641] Please test proposed package

2023-06-01 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hello Ghadi, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gdm3 into lunar-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/44.0-1ubuntu2 in
a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
lunar to verification-done-lunar. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-lunar. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 2020641] Re: Installing or removing apps through snap-store launches another gdm session

2023-06-01 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Please include a "normal" test for gdm3 in the test case. Something like
testing that logins keep working after applying this update, a switch
between "init 3" and "init 5", and that user switching works (while
logged in as user A, with open apps, login as user B, launch an app, and
come back to user A and you still have your stuff running).

And if the upstream MP changes significantly, please update the patch
here as well.

Please take the following into consideration for the next time. It's not
blocking this upload, but helps with the SRU processing and allows us to
process more SRUs per day:
- use the same patch filename in all affected releases: it speeds up
considerably the review of the diff, as git can show they are identical, or
mostly identical. But with different filenames, and content (see below), not
even git can do it
- try to use the same patch content-wise, where possible of course (most of the
time the affected versions will be different). But the DEP3 headers at least
can be very similar, if not identical
- complete DEP3 headers: one patch has an ubuntu bug reference but no upstream
reference, while the other one has an upstream reference, but no ubuntu bug.
And the code change is the same, but with a different diff.
- avoid including unrelated changes in the upload, even if they are no-ops. For
example, the lunar upload is changing the Uploaders field in d/control. It
makes us wonder if that was on purpose, if it was a mistake, perhaps we ask the
uploader if they want to keep it or reupload, etc. Unecessary back-and-forth.

[Bug 2020674] Re: Artifacts at window borders with mutter 44.1

2023-05-24 Thread Andreas Hasenack
It's particularly annoying if I have a maximized terminal window in one
monitor. Chrome on the monitor in its left "perturbs" the terminal
window, see the screenshot. It's like it's drawing beyond the window
limits, over the adjacent window.

The moment the terminal window that has the "corruption" is focused,
it's drawn correctly again. But if I focus the chrome window, then the
terminal window gets these artifacts again as shown in the screenshot.

[Bug 2020674] [NEW] Artifacts at window borders with mutter 44.1

2023-05-24 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

I installed mutter 44.1 and gnome-shell 44.1 from proposed, and a few of
other related dependencies. I don't have everything at 44.1, I don't
know if we should expect more gnome-related updates in lunar-proposed.
For example, I have

gnome-shell-extension-prefs 44.1-0ubuntu1

but gnome-shell-extensions is at 44.0-1

Anyway, I wanted to report that I'm now seeing artifacts around window
borders, when they are arranged to occupy all available area. I should
note I'm also using gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-tiling-assistant
39-3ubuntu2.

I'm attaching a screen recording of what I'm seeing.

The artifact at the border also happens across monitors. The tall chrome
window on the right of the left monitor interferes with the windows
aligned to the left of the right monitor.

This happened immediately after updating mutter and gnome shell to 44.1,
it wasn't happening before.

So far I'm seeing them with just google-chrome and chromium (snap), but
not other apps I quickly tried (gnome-terminal, firefox).

[Bug 2019751] Please test proposed package

2023-05-18 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hello Marco, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock into jammy-proposed. The
package will build now and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/72~ubuntu5.22.04.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy.

The package built correctly in all architectures and Ubuntu releases it
was meant for.

There are no DEP8 regressions.

There is no SRU freeze ongoing at the moment.

There is no halted phasing on the previous update.

[Bug 2006059] Re: systemd refuses to start secondary Xorg logins [org.gnome.Shell@x11.service: Skipped due to 'exec-condition'.]

2023-05-11 Thread Andreas Hasenack
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

Switching to a second user falls back to Wayland even when Xorg was
  explicitly selected.

  [ Test Plan ]

On an NVIDIA DGX Station (known to reliably reproduce the issue):
  1. Start with a default Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop install
- 2. apt install dannf linux-modules-nvidia-525-server-generic
nvidia-driver-525-server -y
+ 2. apt install linux-modules-nvidia-525-server-generic
nvidia-driver-525-server -y
  3. reboot (so new modules load)
  4. Login to a desktop session
  5. Create a new user using 'adduser'
  6. Attempt to "switch to" the new user from the existing login

[ Where problems could occur ]

Any part of the login procedure as that is what is being modified.

  [ Original Description ]

I have three accounts and I need all three to run on xorg instead of
  wayland.

For some reason, when switching accounts, two of them consistently start
wayland even when I select plain gnome from the gdm menu. To get xorg, I
need to log out and log in a second time.

A solution that is supposed to work consists in customizing
  /etc/gdm3/custom.conf (see https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-
  docs/configuring-xorg-as-default-gnome-session/). This solution does not
  work.

I have also experimented with the following options:
  DefaultSession=gnome-xorg.desktop
  and
  PreferredDisplayServer=xorg
Neither appears to set xorg as the default...

I have found the following bug reported upstream against gdm:
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/733.
It looks like this was fixed a year ago but my system is still affected.

Note that I am using the gnome-session package. I doubt whether it makes
any difference but I am adding it for the sake of completeness.

[Bug 1998267] Re: glib not aware of snap confinement

2023-04-27 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I verified that the test was executed according to the [test plan].

I understand kinetic is not part of this SRU. The reason wasn't
explained anywhere, but I'm assuming it's because it's a) ending support
soon; and/or b) this glib update is more useful for core22 snap and core
desktop deployments, which are 22.04 only (am I correct?).

That being said, of course it will also be available to regular 22.04
desktops, so it must not break that scenario. And this was tested in
comment #9.

The package built correctly in all architectures and Ubuntu releases it
was meant for.

There are no DEP8 regressions, or they were fixed.

There is no SRU freeze ongoing at the moment.

There is no halted phasing on the previous update.

[Bug 1987976] Re: firefox black window on wayland

2023-04-20 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hi Gunnar and others,

with Lunar just released, I'm going over the lunar unapproved queue to
pick out packages that should now become SRUs for lunar.

Could someone please add the SRU template to this bug's description, and
fill it out?

Since the package is in unapproved, and not proposed, I'm switching the
bug task back to "in progress".

Regarding the patch, I see there is still a bit of back and forth in the
upstream merge request[1]. Can we get that stabilized, hopefully even
merged, before committing to an SRU?

[Bug 1983794] Re: Evolution not deleting autosave files

2023-04-13 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Jaap, what's needed is a verification for kinetic. Please see the test
plan in the bug description at the very top, and try out the package
from proposed as outlined in comment #24.

And we also need a kinetic verification on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1949200 which
is being fixed in the same upload.

Since jammy comes before kinetic, and both are affected, we need the
verification to be complete for both, to avoid jammy users upgrading to
kinetic and experiencing the bug again.

to enable and use -proposed.

[Bug 1999884] Re: gdm-smartcard not passing successful authentication to desktop at system logon

2023-02-11 Thread Andreas Hasenack
We discussed this a bit in the SRU team, and the external dependency is
"fine" because it's disabled by default. I would still prefer it's not
there, or at least that the default for OFFLINE_MODE was already 1 and
you wouldn't have to specify it when running the test, but this is not a
blocker for the SRU.

2023-02-10 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Marco, why have you kept the code that may download a test script from a
github gist? I can more or less understand having that there while
testing/troubleshooting, but now? I know it's gated on a) OFFLINE_MODE
(although lunar has some changes in that area that are not in kinetic);
and b) the test script NOT being in d/t (and it is), but it still feels
odd to have this potentially-execute-code-from-internet case in there

[Bug 1982560] Re: Mouse lag/stutter (missed frames) in Wayland sessions

2022-12-23 Thread Andreas Hoornstra
Hi Daniel and Francesco, neither of the two options given seem to work
in my case. Hardware: Dell XPS Plus 9320 (i7 1260P, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD,
4K+ 60Hz 500 nit LCD). Software: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. If more information
is needed, feel free to ask. I think I'll switch back to X11 and maybe
try Touchégg to still get gesture support, as X11 works a lot smoother.

[Bug 1915910] Re: evince does not print (apparmor, pxgsettings)

2022-12-08 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hi all,

I'm reviewing this SRU, and was trying to reproduce the issue following
the given test case, but no matter what I try, it just works.

I installed cinnamon 22.10 from the ISO image into a VM, and added a
remote network printer (not wifi, though: wired ethernet). I monitored
dmesg, and launched evince from a terminal so I could spot errors there,
but it printed to that remote printer just fine, directly to it.

I also tested installing ubuntu jammy 22.04, then the cinnamon desktop,
and it also printed find, but there was some problem with the driver and
the printed page just said "Unsupported Personality: UNKNOWN".

In any case, it feels like we need to narrow this case down a bit
further. I therefore ask all who are affected, what else could it be
that is triggering the apparmor error on your end? What would make
pxgsettings be called by evince? Something in particular to the PDF file
that is being printed? Perhaps an image? Or a font?

[Bug 1992299] Re: gsd-smartcard crashed with SIGSEGV in WaitForMultipleObjects()

2022-10-10 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I see. That is a proprietary library needed for this particular
smartcard. I understand Ubuntu is not responsible for it. The only thing
I can add it that it didn't crash before, and I've been using it since
2017 or so.

It still works, mind you, I can login to sites that require it, sign
documents, etc, but this crash happens every now and then, specially
after I login to my desktop.

[Bug 1969849] Re: Evolution crashes when viewing certain emails

2022-04-24 Thread Andreas Olsson
For me it helped upgrading to Evolution version 3.44.0-1ubuntu1, which
currently resides in jammy-proposed.

Whenever I view an email which previously crashed Evolution I still get
the "Cannot find handler for scheme 'evo-https'" message in the
terminal. Except that Evolution doesn't crash, and I get to actually
read the email in question.

[Bug 1969619] Re: RDP Sharing appears on by default in jammy

2022-04-20 Thread Andreas Hasenack
I think this is a bit more nefarious.

On an installed system, all you have to do to have port 3389/tcp
suddenly open is to *visit* the "share" tab in the settings. No need to
change a thing, just visit it, then close the window. Boom, you have rdp
desktop sharing running. At least it's a random password (I think: it's
not the local account password).

[Bug 1875829] Re: in kubuntu 20.04 GIMP offers only English language

2021-12-08 Thread Andreas Fester
This seems to be a packaging issue. "language-pack-de-base" installs the
"gimp*.mo" files at "/usr/share/locale-langpack/de/LC_MESSAGES", while
gimp searches them at "/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES". After manually
copying "/usr/share/locale-langpack/de/LC_MESSAGES/gimp*" to
"/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/", the entry for the new language is
shown in the "Language" dropdown.

Probably "gimp_locale_directory()" returns the wrong directory (called
in gimp_language_store_parser_init() at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/blob/0c8a7891f75a9f41cd36fc0efe2ad506a53d0a15/app/widgets/gimplanguagestore-
parser.c).

The "gimp_locale_directory()" function either uses the value from the
"GIMP2_LOCALEDIR" environment variable, OR a compile time absolute
directory ("LOCALEDIR") OR the directory "share/locale" below the GIMP
installation directory, in that order (see "gimp_locale_directory()" at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/blob/0c8a7891f75a9f41cd36fc0efe2ad506a53d0a15/libgimpbase/gimpenv.c).

A workaround is to set the GIMP2_LOCALEDIR to "/usr/share/locale-
langpack" before launching gimp.

The solution is probably to set the LOCALEDIR compile time variable to
"/usr/share/locale-langpack" when building gimp.
