[Bug 1724024] [NEW] can't set usable scale for hidpi internal display if when using external display less than 1600x1200
Public bug reported: [Impact] Users on X11 are unable to set sane configurations for mixed hidpi/lowdpi multi-monitor setups. A limitation in Mutter prevents gnome-control-center (and any other users of the dbus api or monitors.xml) from changing even unrelated display settings unless 1x scaling factor is chosen. There is no user-facing reason why, the settings just won't apply. This applies to X11 and not Wayland. All NVIDIA users and some others who require X for the time being are affected when using mixed-dpi setups. This especially affects System76 customers, since the patch is required for the automatic multi-monitor setup to work. [Description] When plugging in an external 1920 x 1080 monitor to a laptop with a hipdi screen (e.g. 13" 3200x1800), mutter automatically configures the two displays next to each other and keeps the 2x scale factor. If the user sets the scale factor (using the control center, the dbus api, or the monitors.xml file), they will be stuck at 1x and everything will be tiny on the internal display. It's not possible to set the scale factor back to 2x, and any attempts to do so will result in mutter complaining that "Logical monitor scales must be identical" or "Scale 2 not valid for resolution 1920x1080". The user can't even move the external display from the right of the internal to the left without selecting 1x scaling. The configuration simply won't apply. Mutter prevents applying a scale to a logical display if it would result in a logical resolution less than 800x600. On X11, all displays must have the same scaling factor. The primary reason to prevent setting a too-high a scale factor is that a user may get stuck in an unusable state. The proposed patch, enables Mutter to apply a given scale factor if at least one display supports it. [Test Case] 1) Install Ubuntu 17.10 on a laptop with a hidpi display. By default, Gnome should be correctly scaled at 2x. If you have previously configured this setup, you will have to delete the monitors.xml file and reboot. 2) Plug in a 1920x1080 monitor. At this point, both monitors should be scaled at 2x because Mutter has not received a request to change the display configuration. 3) Now open gnome-control center and attempt to change a display setting like moving the external 1920x1080 display from the right to the left side of the internal display. This should be a valid thing to do. However, there will be no apply button. 4) Now, set the scale factor from 2x to 1x. The apply button will now show. Clicking apply will make the external display the right scale, but everything will be very tiny on the internal display. With the patch, you should be able to make changes without switching from 2x to 1x. [Regression Potential] Potential regressions are likely to manifest in the checking of display scale factors. It's possible that corner cases exist where a user might be able to apply a scale factor that's too big/small for their use. However, the current situation is already a regression from Ubuntu 17.04 that prevents proper monitor configuration. [Bug 1298666] Re: Preferences option not present in Edit menu
Okay, this is, of course, not a bug per se but one big fat sign that the GNOME usability people have really been messing things up recently. As it turns out, there are the usual menus in the gedit window (File, Edit, ...). BUT. Because Apple II only had a screen size of 280×192, clearly in 2014 you have to have menus in the GNOME Shell top bar to save screen estate. On a twin 1920x1200 display setup. And to totally confuse users, some menu items, that used to be in the fricking Edit menu for like ages, have to move to that GNOME Shell top bar application menu. Presumably to justify its existence. So, yes, the item is still there - it just moved to another entirely different menu. I guess we all have to drink a bit more of that OS X Koolaid to get just how awesome it is that the menu for application Y on screen 1 is in the Shell title bar on screen 3 mere 80 centimeters away. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1298666 Title: Preferences option not present in Edit menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gedit/+bug/1298666/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
I am sorry if you feel that I have disappeared. I did not intend it that way. I did what I could to help. The developers of empathy stated that they could not implement OTR unless they had a spec first. They also forced the issue that my spec had to include XTLS. I am only a novice programer and certianly not a spec writer, I also volunteered for far more then I could handle hoping that OTR would be a welcome addition to Telepathy. Unfortunately even after the Spec was ready for review, it never recieved a review. I also was working in Python as that is what I program in, and Telepathy removed support for Python around this same time. JPRvita told me that he would take my spec and complete it for XTLS and that he could program in C. For a long time it looked like this would work. JPRvita had a solid spec, but as happend with me the spec was never reviewed, I am not sure what happened to him and his GSoC XTLS/OTR Spec for Telepathy. References: http://jprvita.wordpress.com/2011/07/17/otr-over-xmpp-on-telepathy/ http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/telepathy/2011-June/005583.html Honestly my take is that this is a developer issue, they don't want OTR and no one can force it upon them. So I got over it and I use Pidgin. FYI for cbris or ScotlandHacks you should use jprvita's Spec it was much further along than mine, it is here: https://gitorious.org/jprvita- repos/telepathy-gabble/source/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296867 Title: empathy needs to support OTR encryption To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/empathy/+bug/296867/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Till, I have to apologize for a) using a super-stupid naming scheme for the two files that even I find confusing and b) for not getting that you're talking about the other file. Well. I attached Ausgabe.pdf as generated by my Evince 3.4.0. This has been generated on an up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04. Versions here are: cups-filters 1.0.18-0ubuntu0.1 cups 1.5.3-0ubuntu1 ghostscript 9.05~dfsg-0ubuntu4 evince 3.4.0-0ubuntu1 libcairo2 1.10.2-6.1ubuntu3 ** Attachment added: Ausgabe.pdf of Evince 3.4.0 based on Abschlussarbeit.pdf https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/537970/+attachment/3197094/+files/Ausgabe_of_Evince_3-4-0.pdf -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537970 Title: Evince does not print images in some pdf files. [Bug 537970] Re: Evince does not print images in some pdf files.
Now I also lifted our laser printer to my office and printed Abschlussarbeit directly through the parallel port. You know what? The logo prints from within Evince. This indicates that the GNOME print dialog does stuff entirely different from what lpr and gtklp do with remote CUPS servers. In all former cases the same (as in ==, not as in .equals()) remote printer hardware was used. (This was also the very hardware that prints the logo when attached to the parallel port.) So that means that Evince in Precise prints just fine to a parallel port printer but not to a remote CUPS printer while gtklp and lpr print fine using the same remote CUPS printer that Evince fails to print to. That lead me to a new hypothesis: the remote CUPS server or one of its subsystems is buggy; printing from gtklp and lpr works because the hardware printer, attached to the CUPS server using Ethernet, is accessed directly from gtklp and lpr while Evince talks to the CUPS server. An experiment (printing a job using Evince and gtklp) refuted this: both jobs appeared in the CUPS job queue. What's also interesting is that the (failing) remote print job from Evince is listed as 1053k in the Size column in the CUPS jobs list for that printer while the gtklp job clocks in at 989k. And the absolute super joke is that after reattaching the darn laser printer and killing two stale print processes (hung since March) the bug disappeared and the logo prints correctly out of Evince. This is even more hilarious if you consider that this wasn't the first time we power- cycled the printer and the problems began long before March this year. I'm positive that the PNG printing problem will reappear. Until then I'm not able to repro this any further. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537970 Title: Evince does not print images in some pdf files. [Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
Hi Anand, I have pulled back work on a pythonic fix for the Telepathy OTR situation. But before I did that João Paulo Rechi Vita started advancing my work and has since completed all of the spec work for OTR. He is now building the Telepathy Gabble OTR code and will then finish the Empathy hooks that will be needed for OTR support. Gabble is the Connection manager for Jabber and Google Chat. He hopes to have all of his work wrapped up by the end of this month. His website is here: http://jprvita.wordpress.com/ He is a more seasoned developer than I and he was able to communicate with the Telepathy Developers better and faster than I was able to. Sorry for bugging out, but the pace of his work far out paced my work. But I am still watching developments for this project and will ensure it gets completed, but I am pretty sure João has got it. Once his work becomes a solid spec I may still go back and finish the Python version which will add support for MSN. Re: [Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
Actually, it would be impossible to have made the cut for 11.04 just because the day I started the project I would have only had two weeks to get something pushed through and then approved for the code freeze date. However I am shooting for 11.10 and I now have two more people that will be helping me with it. The major push for the project will begin in mid-May and hopefully our code will be accepted before 11.10. But initially their may only be support for Google and MSN, possibly Yahoo. The rest will follow those and Google and MSN should be completed about the same time. Once activity begins on 16891, we should be on the way to full OTR support for Telepathy/Empathy. ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #29904 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29904 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296867 Title: empathy needs to support OTR encryption -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
Pander, I do not see the relation between this bug and aMSN, does aMSN use Telepathy for it's back-end? The OTR patch for Empathy is actually being applied by providing OTR support in Telepathy, which is the back- end for Empathy. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296867 Title: empathy needs to support OTR encryption -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 706483] [NEW] Screen brightness reverts to lowest level
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager When I change the screen brightness level in the power management preferences, the brightness level changes correctly as I move the brightness slider, and the brightness notification on screen also correctly reflects the brightness. However, 1 to 2 seconds after changing the brightness, the screen brightness goes back down to the lowest level. The on screen brightness indicator (but not the slider control) correctly reflects the progress down to the lowest level. If I change the brightness using the brightness adjustment on the keyboard, the adjustment stays until I logout or restart. The brightness also reverts to the lowest level each time the login screen displays and after gnome has loaded when login is complete. The on screen brightness indicator tracks the brightness as it moves down to the lowest level. My laptop is a Nexlink Versatility 15.4C XP using Ubuntu Maverick with latest updates as of 01/22/2011. Reinstalling the gnome-terminal solves the issue .. but is this the normal procedure taken against external software supplied by their developers rather than Ubuntu's ? [Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
All, I have already been speaking with the Telepathy developers, there is certianly no way the work can be completed by Natty, but I think I will have a patch by or before 11.10. I am currently gathering details for my proposal, which will get tweaked and then be drafted into a Spec for Telepathy. Once that is correct and complete, I will begin to code the patch according to the Spec. Telepathy developers are taking care of me; so I will not need a sponsor; as they are my mentors, reviewers, and sponsors. I will be posting back here with updates about once a month, all other updates will be made via the mailing-list for Telepathy and/or #telepathy @ freenode.
[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
Please do not expect a patch for this by Natty, I will not be able to dedicate serious time to this until my schedule clears up. I have it slated for serious work, not just tinkering and learning starting on the 18th of January 2011. During that time I have given myself nearly 15 days to work solely on the patch. I have been speaking with the telepathy developers to get a better understanding of the best way to patch the bug. I am also looking over the Telepathy / OTR code, but it will take me a little to familiarize myself and to decide with the Telepathy developers the best approach. Hopefully in a few weeks I will have a plan to present to them. I am knew to the Open Source game, but I am eager to contribute. ** Changed in: libtelepathy (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Jordan Farrell (wolfrage) ** Changed in: libtelepathy (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296867 Title: empathy needs to support OTR encryption -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption
If I submitted a patch and it got reviewed and approved prior to feature freeze then the patch would be committed correct? I see the release date for Natty is April 28, 2011, but when would the feature freeze date be? It is possible depending on how those 15 days go that I could make Feature Freeze. I also had a question about sponsorship, if I create a branch and then submit it with a correct debdiff, then someone will review it and thus sponsor me at that time, automatically? Finally a progress update for today, I have Bazaar updated and code downloaded to include OTR. I have also taken all of the advice of the telepathy developers and bookmarked several pages, I have also got accounts for GNOME's and FreeDesktop's Bugzillas.
[Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off
I found what may lead to a solution: using vbetool instead of xset seems to ignore input. instead of running xset dpms force off, using sudo vbetool dpms off will turn off the display and not turn on unless I close the lid(invoking the default screen blanker) and then move the mouse, press a button or something else. I don't have time right now to make a replacement lid.sh, but I'll post one asap(if I can somehow call sudo without a password prompt... oh yeah, i can mod whatever sudo file to allow vbetool), and later maybe look at the source code in order to get a real fix.
