[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

I don't think this really is actually fixed in Unity in Precise, or
rather, bizarrely, it seems intermittently fixed. This morning, it was
working ok, but now I have to be exactly over the very narrow border to
resize the windows.

USB is certainly subject to device disconnections and reconnections, and
definitely results in re-registrations on suspend/resume.

This is true, but it also seemed to be happening even when I had not
recently disconnected/reconnected or suspended. Perhaps they were
different bugs.

[Bug 701018] Re: a11y panel should have an option to turn on gtk-entry-password-hint-timeout

2011-10-12 Thread Martin Pool
Some people (including me, in the past) have physical conditions that
mean they type with a higher-than-usual error rate. Entering a typical
password without confirmation that the correct key was pressed is
difficult and runs a risk of being locked out through repeated wrong
attempts.

If it was in Security rather than Accessibility that would also be fine.
Since the feature exists, it would just be nice to make it easier to
reach than editing gtkrc.

[Bug 732867] Re: gnome-display-properties monitor layout not saved when using docking station (and display port)

2011-07-06 Thread Martin Pool
So this bug is now specifically about the fact that after reconnecting
the external display, your monitors go back to mirrored mode, rather
than resuming the configuration you had last time you are docked?
(Since scm split out the other bug perhaps we should trim the
description of this one.)

I can't reproduce that specific problem on natty: when I reconnect, the
monitors resume their previous configuration. istr this was not working
in previous Ubuntu releases.

Binary package hint: gdm

This seems to have recently broken on natty: gdm starts up, but ignores
keyboard input, so I cannot log in.

lsusb shows that the keyboard is attached. A usb mouse plugged into the
keyboard moves the pointer around. Xorg.0.log shows that the keyboard
is seen and connected as an input device. I tried with a different
keyboard and a different usb port with no success. I ssh'd into the
machine and shut down gdm, and the keyboard does then work to log in on
a text console, but it again does not work when I restart the machine.
I can use the mouse to start the accessible keyboard but clicking on
that does not help either.

[Bug 758335] Re: gdm ignores keyboard input

2011-04-11 Thread Martin Pool
I have no idea how, but apparently 'slow keys' had got turned on at the
login screen. Once I turned it off, it worked ok. I never normally use
that.

OK, apparently like in bug 41427, if you hold Shift for long enough
(like say by resting something on the keyboard), Slow Keys gets turned
on, and it persists across reboots. And there is no warning that it's
turned on. I can see how this would be useful for accessibility but
there really should be a clue to people who get it accidentally set.

** Summary changed:

- gdm ignores keyboard input
+ gdm ignores keyboard input because Slow Keys was secretly turned on

[Bug 742123] [NEW] creates a misaligned partition

2011-03-24 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

I installed a new 750GB disk in the expansion bay of my X201, and then used
Maverick's disk-utility to create a GUID Partition Table.
I then made a new 250GB partition at the start of the disk. Next time I opened
disk-utility, I saw a warning: the partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes.
This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested.

I then deleted the partition, created a new one, and found the exact
same problem occurs.

1- If disk-utility is smart enough to know this partition layout will cause
poor performance, it shouldn't create it!
2- Does this actually cause poor performance on modern hardware/kernels?

[Bug 701018] [NEW] a11y panel should have an option to turn on gtk-entry-password-hint-timeout

2011-01-10 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

gtk has an option to turn on brief display of characters entered into
password fields, in the way that is commonly done on handheld devices.
This is highly useful to users who for whatever reason have trouble
typing password sequences without errors.

You can put

gtk-entry-password-hint-timeout = 600

into ~/.gtkrc-2.0 but there is no UI for this as far as I can see. It
would be nice if there was a checkbox for it in the keyboard
accessibility control panel.

perhaps by unsetting SSH_AUTH_SOCK in your shell?

If you don't want the agent to run, then that's the right way to do

[Bug 465525] Re: invest-applet crashed with AttributeError in on_retriever_completed()

This happened to me in maverick.

It happens every time I restart the applet.

The avg_simple_quotes_change attribute is only created on this object on

this by just tracing through the logic path that causes it to be unset.

[Bug 197762] Re: [NO MORE COMMENTS] vague problems with USB file transfers

2010-05-09 Thread Martin Pool
Hi Ted,

 Launchpad is slow

Sadly often true. I'm told this may be the major focus for later in
2010.

Put a message at the top

The usual thing is to change the description. There is a different bug
asking for ways for packagers to display more messages later.
Unfortunately some users won't read them before talking.

 Close/lock bugs

Doing this as an opt-in mode for upstreams would be interesting. There
are some other things like code reviews where we do at least highlight
comments by well-known users.

[Bug 538612] [NEW] cursor blinks even when terminal doesn't have focus

2010-03-13 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

This seems to be a recent regression in Lucid: the cursor always blinks
in all terminals even when they don't have focus, which is very annoying
and I think against the GNOME UI guidelines.

As a workaround (see bug 188732) one can set a gconf key to turn off
blinking.

[Bug 527494] [NEW] [lucid regression] UPS icon appears/disappears; shows no data

2010-02-24 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This is a regression in lucid in the last few days:

I have an APC UPS connected to my Lucid desktop machine by usb, with
apcupsd and upowerd running.

Until a couple of days ago, I got a battery+ac icon on my gnome panel,
with a menu that let me find out it was fully charged etc.

Today, the icon appears and disappears about every minute. When it is
there, it has a menu with no items.

% upower --monitor-detail

shows nothing, and there is nothing in the apcupsd event log.

[Bug 415685] [NEW] sticky keys don't interact well with mouse usage

2009-08-18 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

(This is probably not a bug with the control panel as such but I'm not
sure which package is responsible for the behaviour.)

To reproduce:
0- add the AccessX keyboard status applet to a panel so that you can observe
the shift key state
1- open Keyboard preferences
2- tick 'Simulate Simultaneous Keypresses'
3- observe that you can now press shift, release shift, press a and you will
get a A as if the keys had been pressed together - this is working correctly
4- in firefox press Ctrl, release Ctrl (you'll see it lit in the accessx
applet) then click with the mouse on a link

What does happen:
The link opens in a new tab, but the Ctrl state remains lit.

What should happen:
The link should open in a new tab and then the Ctrl modifier should turn off.

The first mouse release should release the sticky key (unless it's in
the locked double-pressed state), just as the first keypress does.

The problem is not specific to firefox - you can also observe it when
for example alt-dragging a window or shift-selecting a region.

2009/7/21 Adil Arif adisar...@yahoo.com:
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I believe what you are experiencing is actually the
correct default behavior. Say you changes from Human theme to the Mist
theme it will continue to be called Mist until you do something to
customize that theme's control, colors, window borders, icons, or
pointer. Once you do that the theme is changed to custom theme because
you customized it. This is beneficial because then you can save that
particular customized theme so that you may reuse it later. If you have
 any questions please ask. Thanks!

That's fine, but that's not the situation I was reporting. The theme
was shown as 'custom' even when I've made no customizations.

[Bug 393021] [NEW] cannot suspend, GpmControlError.Code0: Cannot suspend as not allowed from policy Failed

2009-06-27 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This seems to be a new regression in Karmic within the last week. (ie
it was working a week ago, and is not working with yesterday's or
today's updates.)

My Thinkpad X61s no longer shows options to suspend or hibernate in the
logout dialog or from the gnome-power-manager applet. Also, the gpm
applet always shows a mains plug even when the machine is running from
battery, and the power history option no longer shows anything about a
battery.

I worked through the steps in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager which confirm that
the kernel and lower levels of the machine *can* suspend correctly and
do see a battery. It seems to be a higher level problem in the UI:

I see that policykit 0.9-4ubuntu1 was installed yesterday, perhaps the
problem is in there.

[Bug 393021] Re: cannot suspend, GpmControlError.Code0: Cannot suspend as not allowed from policy Failed

2009-06-27 Thread Martin Pool
I see in polkit-gnome-authorization that permission to suspend etc is
supposed to be implicitly granted to active local console users. I'm
not sure why it's not detecting me as such.

The problem that the display never actually goes to sleep may be a
regression of bug 203513

[Bug 257358] Re: Screensaver Blank Screen should use DPMS

2009-06-09 Thread Martin Pool
It would be nice if it could use just the lowest level of DPMS saving,
so that the screen comes back quickly, and then use a deeper sleep when
it reaches the put display to sleep level.

Note that you can use the 'power management' button to put the display
to real sleep, aside from bug 203513

[Bug 203513] Re: display doesn't go to DPMS sleep

This seems to be broken in Jaunty too.

If I run 'xset dpms force off' (or suspend or sleep) then it turns off
correctly.

As a workaround, you can run 'xset dpms 300' (in each session) which
will turn on power saving at a lower level.
