[Bug 1971559] Re: After Ugrade, Jammy requires me to create a new user, although users are present

2022-05-04 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Sorry, I'm far from that machine at the moment, but I'll try describing:
- Desktop environment: GNOME (standard Ubuntu Desktop)
- I don't see the login screen, Ubuntu boots through to the desktop and shows
the dialog.
- dialog fills almost the whole desktop and nothing can be done except
finishing that dialog.
- it says (from my mind): only a few steps are required to finish setip, this
wizard will help you create an account. Then ist prompts for a new user name,
login id, locale, time zone, etc.

[Bug 1856289] [NEW] TimedLogin feature not working in Ubuntu 18.04

2019-12-13 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 18.04.3, gdm3's TimedLogin feature is not working.

Steps to reproduce:

In /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, uncomment these lines

TimedLoginEnable = true
TimedLogin = user1
TimedLoginDelay = 10

and change "user1" to an exiting user name. Reboot. Observe that nothing
happens at all.

Syslog has the following errors:

Dec 12 15:45:23 rechner-lz-06 gnome-shell[1887]: JS ERROR: TypeError:
this._timedLoginItem is
null#012_resetTimedLogin@resource:///org/gnome/shell/gdm/loginDialog.js:1068:13#012wrapper@resource:///org/gnome/gjs/modules/_legacy.js:82:22#012_onTimedLoginRequested/<@resource:///org/gnome/shell/gdm/loginDialog.js:1089:16

In contrast, AutomaticLogin feature works as expected.

[Bug 1726717] [NEW] Alignment of external screen limits placing of icons

2017-10-24 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Reporting against gnome-desktop since I do not know better. Please
assign to appropriate package. Thanks!

Using external monitors with the gnome desktop behaves unexpected in a few
ways. One is, that the alignment of screens limits, where icons can be placed
on that screens:
My external monitor is higher than the internal screen of my laptop. I have
aligned the screens at the bottom. This makes the bottom part of the (external,
higher) screen unusable for placing icons.

This is probably best seen on the attached screenshot.
Thanks for caring!

[Bug 1639604] [NEW] Pcitures have worng (and long expired) thumbnails

2016-11-06 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

I have shotwell showing a lot of wrong thumbnails. Many of the photos shown in

[Bug 1565469] Re: GPS Denied without reason

2016-09-20 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
>From my experience I believe that the issue is triggered by several apps
>sharing GPS access.
For instance, GPS frequently breaks down with uNav, when other apps access GPS
data concurrently. Like: Browser (geolocation, e.g. Google maps), nearby scope,
cachemere, etc.
I tend to have open a lot of apps in background, many of them acessIng GPS. If
I use uNav togetjer with those, it usually works for a few minuites, then
freezes an loses GPS.
I can resolve this issue by closing all other apps using GPS. After that, uNav
works perfect.

I.e.: uNav requires exclusive access to GPS in order to work. It breaks
as soon as another process requires read access to GPS.

There us no logical reason, why not several processes at once should
read GPS data (it is read-obky after all). Still, this reproducibly
breaks.

[Bug 1620336] [NEW] Publishing videos to Google Photos fails

2016-09-05 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Shotwell can publish photos and videos to my Google Photos account using the
Picasa plugin. Publishing photos works well.
However, publishing videos results in an unusable video on Google Photos:
Shotwell's upload seems to work, but selecting the video on Google Photos just
shows a grey box with text "Your video will be finished shortly." This never
changes (i.e., the video is obviously not processed correctly by Google Photos).
Uploading the video through Google Photos' web interface works fine.

[Bug 1330759] [NEW] del key does not delete marked entry

2014-06-16 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When I have marked an entry (say, in a play queue; the entry is marked with
orange background as being the active one) and press the Del key, I expect
this entry to be deleted (because this is what this key implies). However, in
Rhythmbox, pressing the Del key has no effect whatsoever. This is in contrast

[Bug 1251281] Re: gnome-flashback (metacity) fails to start without hardware acceleration, cloud/remote environments (Forwarded-X/XRDP/VNC/NX/X2GO/Chromoting)

2014-06-04 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Thanks, folks, for getting this into action. Meanwhile, here's a problem
related to Eugene's backport:

Eugene provides a backport of gnome-session 3.12, but this package has a bug:
the gnome-session-quit command is broken. This prevents that users from
logging out of the session. The problem is described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1344528#p1344528 (see comment 4:
the logout dialog was removed with gnome-session 3.12).
So Eugenes fix currently introduces another bug. Looks we need to choose: Have
acceleration but no logout, or the other way round :-(

[Bug 1326038] [NEW] No logout from remote flashback session in trusty

2014-06-03 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded our LTSP server to trusty, users cannot log out any
more from the gnome session. The logout entry from the system menu and
the logout button added to gnome-panel simply do nothing.

Running gnome-session-quit from the terminal, I get the following:
** (gnome-session-quit:2390): WARNING **: Failed to call logout: Logout
interface is only available during the Running phase

The only way to end the session is killall -u $USER.

Note that the X session is running remote (LTSP thin client). Same
problem when running via XDMCP.

[Bug 1326038] Re: No logout from remote flashback session in trusty

2014-06-03 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Hm, I cannot reproduce this at home (standard Trusty installation,
remote login via XDMCP: all fine). There must be some reason why logout
does not work with our LTSP server.

Question: What can prevent logout from gnome-session? What can cause the
above cited error? (Failed to call logout: Logout interface is only
available during the Running phase.)

2014-06-02 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
This bug does also prevent starting the gnome fallback session on LTSP thin
clients. The only way I got it to start is by forcing DRI False in xorg.conf.
X will then not even try to use acceleration.
I will now try Eugenes PPA.

[Bug 1318787] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not play the active entry

2014-05-12 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

- I select any play queue (file queue, etc). Rhytmbox starts to play the queue.
- I press stop
- I select an entry from another play queue (the entry is marked red, as being
the active entry)
- I press play
- Rhytmbox does *not* play the active (selected, marked red) entry. Instead it
continues playing entries from the play queue selected earlier (which is not

[Bug 1174830] Re: Display starts up with wrong screen orientation on thinkpad X230 tablet

2013-12-08 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
This problem persists in Saucy.

But I made the following observations:
- after update form raring to saucy, the problem did not manifest itself at
first, screen started up with correct rotation.
- I started using the `onboard` virtual keyboard -- still no problem
- Finally, I checked the option automatically display upon text input.
Onboard informed me that for this option, GNOME assistive techology needed to
be activated. I confirmed to use it. -- When I logged in next time, the
problem was back (screen starts rotated 90 degrees, input device not rotated).
The problem now appear every time I log in.

The problem could hence be related to the GNOME assistive technology
package.

[Bug 1178272] Re: Without pulseaudio, banshee and rhythmbox report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play

2013-09-03 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Thanks, this was of course the solution. I'd suggest that
gstreamer1.0-alsa was a dependency of ubuntu-restricted-extras. Assuming
that pulseaudio is installed is all right for the standard Ubuntu
installation, but not, for example, for Lubuntu. I'd expect that other
Lubuntu users run into the same problem.

[Bug 1178272] Re: Without pulseaudio, banshee and rhythmbox report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play

2013-09-03 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Hm, to my knowledge Lubuntu does not come with pulseaudio nor gstreamer. The
standard install relies on audio applications that use plain ALSA. Try
installing from a Lubuntu live CD.
It's certainly hard to choose which (meta-)package should pull in
gstreamer1.0-alsa. But some package should include it, otherwise Lubuntu users
will end up without it and have the problems described above. It's the link
between ALSA and gstreamer, so it could come with one of the packages that
deliver ALSA or gstreamer. There's probably no perfect answer here. It could
just be included in the standard Lubuntu install, but the Lubuntu people opt
for simplicity and use direct ALSA.

However, a typical scenario is as follows:
You install Lubuntu from a Live CD. You find a selection of slim audio software
like audacious. However, you miss your rhythmbox/banshee/whatever. You install
rhythmbox/banshee/whatever. It does not work, because there is no gstreamer.
You google a bit and learn that the gstreamer plugins come with
ubuntu-restricted-extras. You install it, but your rhythmbox/banshee/whatever
still does not work, because there is no ALSA sink. You google a bit more but
find no answer. You end up writing a bug report on launchpad ;-).

Anyway, it might even have helped if gstreamer printed a proper error
message (like no sink found) instead of trying to use the jack sink,
which is probably the least likely to exist. I don't know where's the
best place of doing it, but somehow it should be guaranteed that there
is at least one sink present when gstreamer is installed.

[Bug 1178272] Re: Without pulseaudio, gstreamer applications report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play

2013-08-06 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Correction: The problem appears with Banshee and Rhythmbox, but it does not
appear with Quod Libet, which also uses GStreamer.
This may mean it's not a GStreamer problem at all, but more a problem of

[Bug 885086] Re: XDG Desktop item not translated on Live CD

2013-07-15 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I see this behavior in a regular install of Raring, *not* using a live
cd:

Observation:

If a user has no ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs, it will be created at login
(or by calling xdg-user-dirs-update). However, this translates ony
some of the names to the current locale. In my case (German locale), for
example it translates

Music - Musik
Pictures - Bilder

however, the following names will *not* get translated:

Desktop
Templates
Public

These names will only get translated by calling xdg-user-dirs-update --force.
I believe that partial translation of names is a bug.
Could someone please confirm that this happens in a regular install of raring?

Steps to reproduce:
1. delete your ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and ~/.config/user-dirs.locale
2. change to the German locale using the system menu
3. log out and log in
4. cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and observe that only some of the names have
been translated to German

[Bug 1178272] [NEW] Gstreamer applications report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play

2013-05-09 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu Raring (13.04).
The Lubuntu standard installation comes without jack, and without pulse, just
plain alsa. Gstreamer applications (rhythmbox, banshee) used to work fine after
installing ubuntu-restricted-extras, which pulls in the usual gstreamer
plugins.
On my system, gstreamer applications stopped working. They report:
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
jack server is not running or cannot be started
Since there is no jack on this system, never was, and is not intended to be
there, I cannot understand this message. The applications do not produce sound.

This looks like gstreamer tries to start up jackd, regardless whether it
is installed or not.

[Bug 1178272] Re: Gstreamer applications report jack server is not running or cannot be started and do not play

2013-05-09 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Update: Installing pulseaudio fixes the problem.
However, pulseaudio is not part of the standard Lubuntu installation, and I
expect there is a reason for this. (Lubuntu is intended to be very lightweight,
alsa should be enough for simple sound output.)

gstreamer0.10-alsa is installed, I take it this should enable gstreamer
output with alsa. However, this does not seem to work any longer.

[Bug 1174830] [NEW] Display starts up with wrong screen orientation on thinkpad X230 tablet

2013-04-30 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

I'm quite lost as to with package I should report this issue. I report
it against gnome-control-center because this is where screen settings
are made. Please help and direct this report to the right place. Thank
you.

On a Lenovo thinkpad X230 tablet, one of the bezel buttons is bound to
rotating the screen in steps of 90°. This is an improvement in raring
compared to quantal, because in quantal, this button did not work at
all.

However, when I rotate the screen using this bezel button, shut down and
reboot, the display starts up rotated 90° to the right, compared with
what it was on shutdown. This is not a serious problem, but very
inconvenient. It startles you quite a bit booting your computer and
seeing the login screen rotated to the right. (Even the more as the
touch display orientation is not changed in the same way, but that's
another bug.)

This problem does not appear, when the screen orientation is changed via
the Display dialog from the control center. Just when using the bezel
button.

Note how the orange frame in the desktop switcher does not match the displayed
screens. This happens after the display started up with wrong screen
orientation.
This is obviously a mismatch between what is shown on the screen and what the
system believes it should be, in terms of orientation.

Transport is certainly an acceptable translation in this context.
As the wrong translation is no longer included, this issue can be regarded
fixed in newer versions. The wrong string is present in 12.04 LTS, however,
which will continue to live for several years. What is the policy regarding
translation errors in LTS versions?

[Bug 1153646] [NEW] Wrong translation conveyance-Vermittlung

2013-03-11 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

In the German translation of gnome-disk-utility, the word conveyance (from
the SMART conveyance self test) is translated Vermittlung, which is
completely wrong in this context.
Since this SMART test checks for disk errors that have been caused during
transport of the disk from the vendor to the user, conveyance should be
translated Beförderung, Versendung, Transport or Überführung.

correctly erased at the last position but stays on the desktop), until
the icon is dropped.

[Bug 961488] [NEW] Brasero does not burn DAO when burning several copies

2012-03-21 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When burning an audio CD, Brasero uses disc-at-once mode, i.e., there is
no gap between tracs. This works fine, unless after writing has
finished, you decide to burn additional copies (as the dialog asks):
Additional copies are then written in track-at-once mode, i.e., they
have gaps of 2 seconds between tracs.

Why does brasero use TAO für additional copies? Discs were not written
on the fly, so I'd expect that the additional copies feature uses the
same image as before? But obviously, it doesn't.

[Bug 936867] [NEW] Dropouts while listening to vorbis variable bit rate live stream

2012-02-20 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Public bug reported:

When listening to vorbis variable bit rate live streams, after some
minutes, I frequently experience dropouts (short periods of silence). It
sounds just like buffer underruns. The banshee GUI displays Buffering:
0.0% all the time.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Listen to this live stream (by German radio station Deutschlandfunk, a
variable bit rate vorbis stream):
http://www.dradio.de/streaming/dlf_hq_ogg.m3u
2. after some minutes (sooner or later), dropouts occur

[Bug 774417] Re: gapless playback does not work in any gstreamer application

2012-01-21 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
This is a shame! Windows apps do gapless playback for ten years now, and
still the framework that is supposed to be the model implementation
miserably fails at playing gapless audio. Please, fix it *now*. This may
be well be one of the reasons why people prefer windows over linux. Any
modern operationg system *must* play music as the user expects it to.
GStreamer does not. This will drive users into the arms of microsoft. Is
this what you want?

[Bug 803917] Re: Do not appear in Startup Applications

2011-10-16 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
Here are some examples:

1) Login sound. Many users want to turn it off.

2) Guest accounts or dedicated accounts. For example, I use a dedicated account
to play music. It's a restricted account with no password, everyone can use it
to play music. This account shall never
 - log into Ubuntu One or even try to (ubuntuone-launch.desktop)
 - display update notifications (update-notifier.desktop)
 - search for drivers (jockey-gtk.desktop)
 - do any social networking (gwibber.desktop, telepathy-indicator.desktop)

[Bug 45518] Re: Doesn't support gapless playback

Although this bug has fix released, gapless playback does NOT work for flac
files, neither in Banshee (2.0.0) with the gapless option enabled, nor in
Quod Libet (2.2.1). These are the versions released with natty.
Has there been a regression?

Unity 2D, but the traditional Gnome session as it was in Maverick.
