[Bug 299330] Re: Alt+Tab - switching applications delay. slow

2021-04-29 Thread Stephan Henningsen
This is still a problem on Ubuntu 20.04. Since it uses a completely
different desktop environment, the bug probably has a different root
cause, but the annoying user experience is exactly the same.

[Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-05-02 Thread Stephan Pearce
I have 2 monitors and one HDTV being used as a monitor. Everything was
fine on Pop OS 19. I upgraded to Pop OS 20 (which I assumed bumped me to
the latest Ubuntu) and now I'm having fractional scaling issues.

Left monitor = 1080p monitor in portrait mode
Middle HDTV = 4k HDTV in landscape mode
Right monitor = 1080p monitor in portrait mode

I can see fractional scaling in my options, but if I choose 125, 150, or
175%, it will only do 200%. And, it won't let me change it on one
display. It only applies universally.

Until this is fixed, my main monitor (HDTV) is frustrating to use with
font so small.

Also, I have to adjust the scaling in my Nvidia settings anytime I make
any change because it makes the scaling of the middle monitor way too
big. So, then the desktop actually "scrolls" until I manually fix the
scaling. I have a GeForce 1080.

[Bug 1812780] Re: Gnome Shell crashes with SIGSEGV when Android emulator started

2019-02-11 Thread Stephan Henningsen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1812527 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1812527

This is really getting a big problem since I cannot use the emulator for
my daily work.

Is there anything I can do to help debug this?

It is quite easy to reproduce as it happens every time I switch
workspace with the emulator running, no matter what state the emulator
is in; meaning the developers of this can easily reproduce this
themselves:

1) Install full Android Studio with JDK, e.g. in ~/opt/android-studio to not
pollute their computer
2) Start the Emulator; install any Android version in the process.
3) Switch Workspace.
4) Observe crash.

[Bug 1612618] [NEW] Eog overlays for navigation and rotation are cluttering the image begin displayed

2016-08-12 Thread Stephan Henningsen
Public bug reported:

(I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04)

Test case:
1) Open image in eog.
2) Move mouse pointer around
3) Frustrating and useless hint overlays for nativation prev/next and rotate
cw/ccw keep appearing and disappearing and clutter up my view of the image I'm
trying to enjoy.

I have three suggestions:
1) Remove them from code entirely. I has worked perfectly without them for
ages.
2) Make an option to disable them completely.
3) Concentrate all overlay buttons to a block and place it at bottom center
(where rotation are now) to make them more user friendly; it's annoying to have
to move the mouse across the entire screen to navigate forth/back. But this is
just an extra tip, because I basically believe that this feature should be
killed all together.

What I really used to like about EOG was its simplicity. It shows me my image
and nothing more! Nobody wants clutter -- especially clutter they cannot
disable.

[Bug 1589156] [NEW] evince does not start because glib schema files are not compiled

2016-06-04 Thread Stephan

an error message:

installed"

After calling:
sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas
everything is fine.

I am not sure if this is related to evince itself or some conventions on
calling the schema compiler that have not completly been followed in

[Bug 1452204] [NEW] evdev device for retro-bit NES controller adapter isn't set up as a joystick

2015-05-06 Thread Stephan Sokolow
Public bug reported:

Games which rely on SDL2 (and tools like antimicro) can't see the retro-
bit NES controller adapter by default because SDL2 has dropped support
for the old /dev/input/jsX API and udev lacks a rule to permission the
/dev/input/eventX node appropriately and set the ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK flag.

The following rule (or equivalent) needs to be added to the system-
provided udev rules.

SUBSYSTEM==input, ATTRS{name}==INNEX NES Controller USB,
MODE=0666, ENV{ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK}=1

I come to this conclusion because:
1. Until the mode is changed, feeding evtest with an explicit input device
number results in a permissions error.
2. Globally allowing users to read joystick input poses no security risk and
the data is already mirrored via /dev/input/jsX which is 0666 already.
3. Once the mode is changed, sdl2-jstest and antimicro still cannot see it.
4. Once ID_INPUT_JOYSTICK=1 is set, sdl2-jstest and antimicro work just as well
as sdl-jstest and jstest-gtk, which use the old API.

If have two similarly configured systems (Kubuntu 14.04.1, Eclipse running on
java 8, using gtk2 with theme QtCurve, *not* oxygen-gtk).
So far I've seen the crash only on one of the machines. So if there's more
things worth comparing, I'd be happy to provide more information.

[Bug 146206] Re: files are copied to a local directory before being extracted

2014-08-03 Thread Stephan Hegemann
Ok, today I wanted to decompress a gziped .iso file from an external
hard drive and was surprised when suddenly cp appeared in the gnome-
system-monitor.

So, just to be sure the problem is adressed properly: File Roller is copying
the 8 GB .gz file from my external hard drive to a folder in /home/user/.cache,
then decompresses it to the destination of the file.
This happens when compressing and decompressing .gz, .bzip2, .xz, but not with
tar.gz, tar.bzip2 and tar.xz. These are just the ones I tested, there could be
more.

This could be a good feature, as Ahmad said 4 years ago, but it is not. This is
just silly:

The gzip decompression is, in my case, as fast as the read speed of my external
hard drive. It uses just 40% of one core on my system, so it is just limited by
the copying speed. Now, when File Roller thinks it has to copy it twice, it
takes twice the time it would have to.
But there is more: I had problems becouse of this years ago, when I had only a
60GB HDD, but I didn't know why at that time. Lets say, you have a 10GB
partition image (.img) on your external hard drive, compressed with gzip
(.img.gz) which is now 6GB, thanks to the magic of gzip. You want to decompress
it to the HDD of your PC and you have 13 GB free, just right for the 10 GB
decompressed file. But this is when File Roller pisses on your great
calculation. It copys the 6GB file into your .cache directory and suddenly
there are only 7GB left on your system and File Roller fails to decompress
becouse of to few disk space. This is the worst feature that has ever been
invented.

Thanks for your attention, I am a bit angry and wanted to share my view.
By the way, does anybody konw why the GNOME people are ignoring ignoring
this now since 7 years? This is definetly not a feature, this is just
stupid.

[Bug 1286955] [NEW] Resolution detection for external projectors lacks manual overwrite

2014-03-02 Thread Stephan Wissel
Public bug reported:

When pluggin in an external projector the external resolution doesn't
get discovered reliable. This mostly happens in hotels or meeting
facilities where AV equipment has long calbles, low quality cables or
all sorts of switches between PC and projector. This renders the Ubuntu
Laptop useless as presentation machine. To adjust setting for a
previously unknown projector you typically have 30-90 sec, so fiddling
with X11 config files is out of the question.

Suggestion to fix:
In the Gnome control center, Display settings screen (where you discover
displays and set resolutions) add the ability to manually specify display
properties. Before doing that manual, display a big fat warning.

There are 2 UI concepts I could imagine:

a) Extend the dropdown list to have the last option Manual overwrite ...
b) Have a button next to the resolution Manual overwrite ...

both would then show a dialog with the most common configurations (the
most probable use case is projector at meeting facitily, so there are
not that many) and the option to memorize that for this user.

Problem occured since I use Ubuntu from 10.04 to 13.10.

[Bug 30378] Re: Joystick activity does not stop the screensaver

2014-02-19 Thread Stephan Sokolow
@10: It shouldn't. Expecting every game, past present and future
(including closed-source ones where the developers bundled a copy of
everything except libc and libGL to avoid having to maintain them) to
special-case joysticks on Linux is insanity.

This disagreement over approach reminds me of a Buddhist quote.

“Where would I find enough leather
To cover the entire surface of the earth?
But with leather soles beneath my feet,
It’s as if the whole world has been covered.”

Even if that weren't the case, ignoring the joystick is architecturally
wrong. The X server is supposed to reset the screensaver counter on
INPUT. Joysticks are input. (And they're not typically used for the
special Let's control the music player without waking the monitors
case which justifies LIRC also being an exception.)

Anyway, since the xf86-input-joystick driver can watch the joystick
without blocking other applications, I've just e-mailed the upstream
developer/maintainer to ask whether it's possible to use it to map
joystick input to the X11 input queue in a way which would have no
effect beyond being visible to the screensaver subsystem.

[Bug 1108637] Re: backspace key no longer works in nautilus

2013-05-12 Thread Stephan
It's always two steps forward and one step back with every Ubuntu
release, isn't it? I don't care about the technicalities about whether
it's Gnome, Canonical or Stallman who's responsible for introducing this
bug. All I know is that it says Ubuntu on the package, and the
maintainers of Ubuntu should put an effort into maintaining a level of
functionality that Ubuntu users have been accustomed to. Luckily there
was an easy fix for this, but it's still extremely annoying that one has
to browse the web after every distupgrade in order to restore normal
behaviour and functionality. I switched to Ubuntu for a reason, and
this is NOT how Linux for Human Beings should be like!

However, gsettings-desktop-schemas uses this option by default in
org.gnome.desktop.default-applications.terminal.exec-arg.

The question which needs to be answered is whether gsettings-desktop-
schemas is wrong (I doubt that) or if someone has removed the -x
option from gnome-terminal without communicating this, for whatever
reason.

Public bug reported:

When making a Bluetooth connection to the phone and then selecting

[Bug 803824] [NEW] Can't change the display of Nautilus/Gnome File Open Dialog

2011-06-30 Thread Stephan Wissel
Public bug reported:

When using File open in an application the Nautilus File Dialog shows up. It
has severe shortcomings (see attached screenshot):
(1) Hidden files show or don't show based on the selection made in Nautilus
earlier. No UI (e.g. at (2)) is provided to toggle (Ctrl+H seems to work)
(3) display is always in detail mode Ctrl1-3 or Ctlr+- to alter the display
don't work.

[Bug 803824] Re: Can't change the display of Nautilus/Gnome File Open Dialog

2011-06-30 Thread Stephan Wissel
Hi Walter,
I can select or unselect Main Toolbar in the view menu of Nautilus' main
window. I also can change sort or display order in Nautilus' main window. Both
has no influence on Nautilus' (or does that dialog belong to Gnome?) File Open
dialog. I'm referring to the dialog that appears when you hit Ctrl+O in gEdit,
gnumeric, gimp or any other application. Hope that clarifies it.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. I usually upgrade once a year, so 11.10 will

example - I use a lot of other apps that don't have a Open URL dialog.
And it is 0 understandable for non-technical users. Could it be fixed?

[Bug 783534] Re: Move to Workspace have to be pressed twice

2011-05-30 Thread stephan
Hey I was on vacation so I cant answer this post.

First I use Unity.

I will try to explain the problem again.

I have a non English version of Ubuntu, so maybe it is not
workspace(could be Desktop)

The focus is on a window, then I make a right klick on the top of the
window(the panel where close, max aso. is)
I choose move to other workspace and then choose workspace 2.

If I do this, nothing happens, but when I do it one time more the window
gets moved to workspace 2.

So I think it is a bug, because the first time I do the action nothing
happens. The window dont get moved to an other workspace.

Hope it will be clearer for you.

[Bug 783534] [NEW] Move to Workspace have to be pressed twice

2011-05-16 Thread stephan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I want to move a window to an other workspace I have to do the procedure
twice.
For example:
Right mouse button - Move to workspace - workspace 2
This does nothing.
And when I'm doing the same thing again the window gets moved to workspace 2.
So I have to do this always twice to move a window to another workspace using
the right mouse operation.

[Bug 711355] Re: Songs synced to iPhone 4 do not appear in iPod app

2011-05-07 Thread Stephan
I have a iphone 4 with IOS 4.3.2 and I am also experiencing the same
problem. Not sure if this is helpful at all but I noticed

1. the files are transferred to my phone

2. the mp3 file names are the same as what they are on my computer (not
the weird 4 or 5 capital letters naming convention similar to the other
files transferred via Itunes)

3. I used SqliteMan to view the database file Library.itdb on my phone -
they were not updated after synchronising with Rhythmbox. The db tables
do not include any records for the mp3 files transferred to my phone via
Rhythmbox.

Hope this helps

[Bug 648951] Re: gnome-terminal switches desktop with small zoom

2010-10-16 Thread Stephan Mohr
I made some tests with a new user and found out the following:
- the bug occurs only if the terminal window is maximized
- the bug occurs only if you enable the visual effects in System - Preferences
- Appearance - Visual Effects to at least 'normal'

I tried maverick from a live USB, but could not reproduce the bug since
I was not able to install the driver needed to enable the visual
effects.

I hope this helps you.

Nothing more, nothing less. This is a good thing, as I as a community

Peace,

Sure? Note that Nautilus does not hang at thumbnailing this file (did
you test this?). I have other svg-files that trigger the Nautilus-
problem, but none of them has embedded tif files, they link to tif
files, some of them may be with broken paths, I wasn't able to find the
respective place. Note as well, that rsvg-view hangs with the files
that trigger the Nautilus-problem, but not with this particular test
presented here.

[Bug 581631] Re: eog freezing / hanging on some svg (also freezes nautilus?)

2010-05-19 Thread Stephan Saalfeld
Ok. I just spent the time to minimize. eog hangs when there is a tif
image linked from svg, it is irrelevant whether the file is linked
relatively or with absolute paths. Attached an Inkscape generated
example svg that contains nothing but a single tif image. Unpack the
file into any directory

tar xjf test.tar.bz2

and try to view it

rsvg-view test.svg

works

eog test.svg

hangs

Thanks for looking at this.

[Bug 581631] [NEW] eog freezing / hanging on some svg (also freezes nautilus?)

2010-05-17 Thread Stephan Saalfeld
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

eog freezes / hangs on attempting to render some svg files (the file
might have broken links to images). I suspect this to be the origin of
Nautilus freezing / hanging too in folders containing these files.
Attached a backtrace. I tested this with both eog and rsvg-view: eog
freezes, rsvg-view successfully renders the file (though incomplete, but
that doesn't matter). I did not have time yet to narrow this down in
the svg itself, the file is quite big and complicated. If, despite the
attached backtrace, you need more information, I can also provide a
questionable file.

[Bug 305546] Re: Nautilus crashing/freezing when opening folder with svg file

2010-05-10 Thread Stephan Saalfeld
I confirm this bug on an up-to-date Lucid Lynx amd64. Nautilus, and so
the whole Desktop, hangs on trying to thumbnail some SVG files (that
contain broken links to images). Until this may be fixed, does anybody
know how to selectively switch off thumbnail generation for SVG (all the
rest works fine and is very helpful)? I did not get it from the
previous comments though Edgar sounds like if there is something. The
mime-type of SVG (image/svg-xml or image/svg+xml) is not present in the
gconf settings for thumb-nailers.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

[Bug 559106] [NEW] Appearance Properties hangs on Keep Settings dialog without compiz(-gnome) installed

2010-04-09 Thread Stephan Peijnik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I just tried re-enabling desktop effects after compiz and compiz-gnome
got uninstalled (due to a Breaks: in metacity) and Appearance Properties
just hangs at the 'Keep Settings' dialog. Looking at LP:159996 there
seems to be a check for /usr/bin/compiz, but that file is provided by

[Bug 559106] Re: Appearance Properties hangs on Keep Settings dialog without compiz(-gnome) installed

2010-04-09 Thread Stephan Peijnik
Bugfix branch pushed and ready for review. Upload of compiz-gnome alone
does not fix this bug (think of systems which have compiz-core
installed, but are lacking both compiz and compiz-gnome, just like my
system right now).

2010-04-09 Thread Stephan Peijnik
Just gave compiz-gnome 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 a try. Now effects are enabled
as they are supposed to be, but gnome-appearance-properties still hangs.

** Summary changed:

- Appearance Properties hangs on Keep Settings dialog without compiz(-gnome)
installed
+ Appearance Properties hangs on Keep Settings dialog

[Bug 542438] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2010-03-20 Thread Stephan Peijnik
I am having the same problem. It seems to be related with X-Ubuntu-
Gettext-Domain=nautilus getting added at the top of the
/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop file (actually all
nautilus*.desktop files I had a glance at look that way).

Also, starting nautilus from a terminal results in the following output
before dumping core:

(nautilus:12768): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Could not load desktop file
'/usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop': Key file does not start with
a group

Removing the first line from /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop fixes
things for me, looks like something in the build system is messing up those
desktop files. Some applications seem to be able to cope with that though, but
at least nautilus is not.
Attached is the broken desktop file.

[Bug 542438] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2010-03-20 Thread Stephan Peijnik
After another quick check I noticed that this is related to problems in
cdbs (langpack.mk to be precise, which adds X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain to
the .desktop files, possibly LP: #535650).

The changes in 0.4.62+num1ubuntu6 seem to have broken nautilus as well,
see LP: #542438.

[Bug 538165] Re: Lucid reads file size wrong

2010-03-12 Thread Stephan Muhs
It is flabbergasting that the marketing spin (started in late 80s, I
believe) to make hard drives look bigger by redefining the kilobyte as
1000 bytes has now hit Ubuntu as well. Every filesystem I have ever
worked with did stick to the old definition of kb (1024 bytes) and MB
(1024*1024 MB) and all applications and all users have come to rely on
it.

Introducing change for change's sake is helping nobody - and just
marking this as Invalid is downright arrogant in my book. If you need
to introduce insanity in Lucid's filesystem, at least make it
configurable for those of us who do not want to loose consistency with
the rest of the world.

2010-03-12 Thread Stephan Muhs
Sorry for the typo: instead of MB (1024*1024 MB it should of course
read MB (1024*1024 bytes). Where is the edit function?

[Bug 532659] Re: new theme not applied

2010-03-10 Thread Stephan Peijnik
I am having the same problem. The new theme was not applied, and I
believe I also changed the theme manually. As gdm-setup does not allow
changing the theme anymore, what is the correct way of solving this
issue, apart from deleting /var/lib/gdm?
