[Bug 1705864] Re: Nautilus no longer starts (again)

2017-10-31 Thread el_gallo_azul
No, I haven't yet reinstalled the operating system. It's VERY tempting,
due to the accumulation of bugs over time that happens on a computer,
but unfortunately I haven't had a chance to operate without my main
computer for the 2 weeks that it takes to reinstall the operating
system, applications, and configure everything again.

Yes, the last time I had this issue was yesterday. I don't know of any
way to make Nautilus start functioning again other than rebooting the
computer.

Note that this particular bug is not common. ie. It doesn't occur every
day. It happens every couple of weeks on average.

[Bug 1705864] Re: Nautilus no longer starts (again)

2017-07-23 Thread el_gallo_azul
Yes, I always tried to add each instance of this `nautilus` bug to
previous bug reports for the same bug. I wasn't always able to find
them, though.

You might well be right. It's more than a year since I last did a fresh
installation of the OS, and in fact, it has received a version upgrade
in that time, which in my experience, consistently breaks bits of the
system. At least this time, the computer still booted OK after the
upgrade, which is a first for me.

Due to the current level of accumulated quirks and errors, I am now
reaching the point where it is becoming so inconvenient to persist with
my current installation that I'll do a fresh installation as soon as I
get the opportunity for the week or so that's required to configure the
fresh installation again.

[Bug 1705864] [NEW] Nautilus no longer starts (again)

2017-07-22 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

I have reported this bug several times (about 5 times) before.

I have not had this error occur for some weeks.

I was using nautilus during my current session about half an hour ago.

I have tried to start nautilus by:

1. Clicking "Show in folder" from Google Chromium browser; and
2. Clicking the "Files" icon in the Unity Launcher; and
3. Typing "nautilus" into a terminal.

The best I get is the icon in the Launcher flashes as the application
tries to start.

[Bug 1615314] [NEW] It struggles to start

2016-08-20 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
Release:14.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

rhythmbox:
  Installed: 3.0.2-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 3.0.2-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.2-0ubuntu2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.0.2-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64
Packages

3) What you expected to happen

The application starts easily and quickly

4) What happened instead

4.1 As soon as starting the app, the screen greys out, as if running low
on system resources. I can now rule that possibility out, because I had
only just booted, I had not started any other applications, and this
computer has LOADS of memory and LOADS of processing power. This
'greying out' lasts for about 30 seconds or so, and I cannot use the
application at all during this time.

4.2 Also right near the end of this 'greying out' time, an error message
appears, saying "The application Rhythmbox has closed unexpectedly",
despite the fact that the application Rhythmbox HAS NOT closed. I attach
a screenshot of the message.

This bug has been occurring for more than a year, and occurs EVERY TIME
that I start the application.

[Bug 1402071] [NEW] External USB disk appears but it is no longer connected

2014-12-12 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
- About Ubuntu

ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

gnome-disk-utility:i386 3.10.0-1ubuntu3

3) What you expected to happen

When I had safely removed the disk, the disk would not appear in the
utility again until I had connected it again.

4) What happened instead

Yesterday I looked at the external disk in gnome-disk-utility 3.10.0.
When I finished, I clicked the power off icon.

That caused:
1. The partitions of that disk to disappear;
2. The disk to appear a second time in the list within gnome-disk-utility, with
all its original partitions; and
3. The Ubuntu has experienced an error application to start.

I right-clicked on the disk in the Launcher, selected Save removal,
and it worked.

I plugged the disk's USB cable in again, and it mounted as normal.

I then repeated exactly the steps above, except I might not have got the
Ubuntu has experienced an error message.

I did it all a third time.

I then left the computer for about 10 hours.

I just started using the computer again 30 minutes ago. The external
USB disk does not appear in the Launcher. I started gnome-disk-utility
to look at an internal disk, and the external USB disk still appears in
gnome-disk-utility despite the fact that it is not connected.

It is the dodgy version of the disk that appears (per step 2 above),
with no partitions and only the text No Media where the partition
descriptions would be - see screenshot http://imgur.com/XsZ3Oic

hopefully they will start working again with 14.04.

2014-04-08 Thread el_gallo_azul
I haven't had that problem with the application menu not showing for a

The difference might be that I am using

1. Newer hardware with much greater processing amd RAM capacity; or

2. Later versions of the operating system and software.

It doesn't make any difference to me what happens to this bug report
now.

[Bug 1030207] Re: Rhythmbox stops playing near the end of an MP3 track

2014-04-06 Thread el_gallo_azul
I probably would test it and let you know, but:

1. I only use Rhythmbox on my new computer in another room now.
2. Rhythmbox seems to be quite resource-demanding, so it works much better on a
computer with a couple of Intel Xeon E5 processors and 32GB of RAM than this
old clunker with one Pentium 4 and 3GB of RAM. That computer uses Ubuntu 13.04,
instead of 12.04.
3. My music collection resides on an external hard disk which I leave plugged
in to the computer.
4. That's why I can't test Rhythmbox on Ubuntu 12.04 now.

Feel free to close this bug or whatever you need to do for LTS version.

There is no explanation about why it is not available.

I attach a screenshot.

[Bug 1016406] Re: command field appears when playing a movie

2013-02-14 Thread el_gallo_azul
I can't remember if this happened only with Ubuntu 12.10, or if I saw it
on 12.04. I removed 12.10 and reinstalled 12.04 some time on 2012, but
I'm not sure if that would have been before or after I reported this
bug.

Does it appear without pressing alt too?

I don't really know what this questions means. The bug describes what I
did. ie. I did not press anything that is not mentioned. That is, I did
not press alt (or anything else) before it appeared.

Did you press Alt when it did appear?

No. The only thing that I pressed after it appeared was Esc in order to
make it go away.

[Bug 1030207] [NEW] Rhythmbox stops playing near the end of an MP3 track

2012-07-27 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

This has happened a number of times over the last few months. I never
thought to check the file format previously. I think it's worth
reporting a bug now.

My music was playing (shuffled) alright for a few hours. It then went
quiet when a song had (just about?) finished.

The song is from an MP3 file. It reached 3:02 of 3:04, and then stopped.
I have tried to start a different track, without success. All the
Rhythmbox control seem OK, but there is no progress on the time bar and
there is no sound coming out.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
- About Ubuntu

Ubuntu 12.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

rhythmbox 2.96-0ubuntu4.1

3) What you expected to happen

Music to keep playing (shuffled, if it makes any difference)

4) What happened instead

It pplayed for a few hours and then stopped playing (froze near the end
of a song)

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)

[Bug 699840] Re: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: Mountpoint Already registered

2012-05-26 Thread el_gallo_azul
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 386417 ***

I only think that 'duplicate status' might be wrong because bug #386417
refers to Samba, and I am not using Samba because I only use Linux
computers at home, and also because Samba wrecked everything for me
(made my desktop computer unusable, requiring me to reinstall Ubuntu)
when I tred it.

[Bug 536766] Re: Personal file sharing preferences dialog does not offer to install needed packages

2012-05-15 Thread el_gallo_azul
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday, because I tried Samba on Ubuntu
11.10 two days ago and everything went bad and my machine became
unusable. I am very wary of (trying to use) Samba. I only want to share
files between Linux machines.

Yes I am trying to work out how to fix the problem of not being able to
use Personal File Sharing because 'This feature cannot be enabled
because the required packages are not installed on your system'.

So this is a repetition of #27 above. The message itself is quite sweet,
but without providing any clue of how to identify which packages are not
installed, its usefulness is reduced.

I've just been through each item on the first page of Google results for
'ubuntu 12.04 personal file sharing this feature cannot be enabled
because the required packages are not installed on your system', but the
2 most thorough answers require Samba. A couple of others refer to
Apache, but I can't work out what package/s to install. Here's a quick
list of what I've found.

apache2
apache2.2-bin
apache2.2-common
libapache2-mod-dnssd
NFS

[Bug 919418] [NEW] Doesn't add new tracks to music library (music stored on external USB hard drive)

2012-01-20 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

This has been happening for a long time - I think more than a year.

My music collection is on a USB external hard drive. Every time I use
Rhythmbox, I always update some information in the ID3 tags of my music
collection. I also add new music once in a while, or I use MusicBrainz
Picard to correct the tags for one or more albums at a time.

The problem is that when I add new music to the nominated storage
location, the music does not appear in the library within Rhythmbox.

I have left the application for up to 12 hours (or more) and the tracks
have still not appeared.

Yesterday I managed to trick the application into showing the tags by
moving albums from the existing music library to another location with
the new albums, and then moving the whole lot back, and then moving the
new albums to the correct artist. Unfortunately, although they appear in
the library, they are of course in the wrong location and are seen by
Rhythmbox as 'missing files'.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
- About Ubuntu

11.10

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy

[Bug 915993] [NEW] 'IP Information' is shown too short to see

2012-01-13 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

On the 'Devices' tab, there is a section called IP Information. This
consists of a field with headings Protocol, IP Address, Netmask /
Prefix, Broadcast, Scope.

I believe the table that they are shown in should be scaled to the size
of the window, and therefore the Devices tab. However, I am finding that
that table is very short. Too short to use, in fact. The size of the
headings is OK, but the text under the headings has a narrow slit, the
height of which is about two thirds of the vertical size of the text. I
will try to attach a screen shot.

[Bug 912570] [NEW] Menu not showing on more than one application

2012-01-05 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

I have noticed this occurring on more than one application - so far it
has occurred in Totem and then recently with Rhythmbox. Links to those
existing bug reports follow.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=665937
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=667162

It seems to be intermittent - sometimes it does not occur. Starting
applications directly from associated files, or in the case of
Rhythmbox, directly from the Sound menu, seems to make it more likely
that menus will not appear once the application is started, although it
has happened to me when I start the application from the Dash or from a
button that I have on the Launchpad.

Yep I just tried that just then.

The result was

Error: '*ppa:bsantos/ppa' invalid

After that, I:

1. Enabled the PPA repositories again
2. Ran Software Update again, this time successfully
3. Ran a .avi file to test the subtitles.

They worked.

[Bug 883694] Re: Downloaded subtitles not showing

2011-11-08 Thread el_gallo_azul
I tried to install the patch. I added the repositories. I even thought
to add the signature key (I think it's called) under 'Authentication' in
Software Sources, but I still can't install when I try Software Update
(although all the parts of the patch appear - about 10 or so of them)
because I get the error message about '...trying to install from
software sources that aren't trusted...' or something like that. I don't
really know what I'm doing.

[Bug 883694] [NEW] Downloaded subtitles not showing

2011-10-29 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

A recent (within the last two weeks) update of the Totem application means that
I can enable the 'Subtitle Downloader' plugin now. However, if I use the plugin
while a movie is playing, it seems to work when 'Find' subtitles is selected,
and often one or more subtitle files appear. If I select one of the subtitle
files, and click 'Play with Subtitle':
1. The progress bar (below the file list) moves, and then stops moving.
2. The 'Play with Subtitle' button is greyed out.
3. The cursor shows as the 'something's happening' icon, and stays that way
indefinitely - at least 10 minutes.

[Bug 870522] [NEW] Rhythmbox does not add music to library from external hard drive

2011-10-08 Thread el_gallo_azul
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal
Rhythmbox 0.13.3

I've spent the last few hours today trying to get Rhythmbox to add my
music collection to my library. It's set up with the hard drive as the
Library Location in Edit -- Preferences -- Music and with 'Watch my
library for new files' ticked. It's my own fault, as I started Rhythmbox
without the HDD turned on, didn't think, and chose 'Import Errors' and
then Remove', losing the whole library. I didn't mind, because when I
have loaded it before, it didn't take too long.

This time, however, I switched it on, checked the Rhythmbox settings and
waited. After nothing happening for a while, I selected 'Music --
Import Folder...' and chosen the folder on the external HDD. If I choose
an album folder (with 10 songs on it) the indicator in the bottom right
hand corner has an orange segment going backwards and forwards, and says
'Importing (0/10)', but nothing seems to happen (yet, for a long time).
