[Bug 1315164] [NEW] list view of Trash content is broken

2014-05-01 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- click on the Trash can on the bottom of the Launcher
- select list view, as opposed to grid view.

It is completely broken and unusable.

Main issues:
- the default width of the Name column is ridiculously small. Names longer than
just 2 or 3 characters show up as ...
- columns cannot be resized!! (making the first issue a critical one)
- every time the window is moved or resized or it gains or looses focus, the
Type column changes its width a few times in a ridiculous dance that lasts
about one second

Another issue, minor if compared with the above, is that thumbnails are
not shown for images, neither in list view nor in grid view.

[Bug 1303082] [NEW] No application menu in Unity

2014-04-05 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 13.10 (Unity), Evince's menu on the top of the screen has only
one entry Document Viewer with only one menu item Help, which is
pathetic.

The full menu is available under a button with a gear wheel icon.

contain the full menu. That's what the menu bar is for.

[Bug 1295778] [NEW] Nautilus definitely needs to be repleced

2014-03-21 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Now this is too much.

I wanted to temporarily see a folder tree in TREE VIEW and I've found
out that feature has been REMOVED. That's absolutely ridiculous. Who on
earth, in his right mind, would decide to remove such a feature from a
file browser, which was already implemented? This is one more proof, if
any more was needed, that the development of Nautilus has (since a
pretty long time ago now) taken a completely demential drift.

Recent changes in Nautilus have all been for the worse: regressions,
design decisions that can only be described as stupid, removal of
obvious features without any benefit in exchange. The file browser is a
pretty important part of an operating system. If Ubuntu wants to remain
a usable operating system, it's urgent to drop Nautilus in favour of
something else whose main developers upstream are not on drugs.

By Ubuntu has patched typeahead selection back in you mean it will
become available in some future update, right? Because currently I don't
see typeahead selection. Typing results in a search (which also includes

This bug demonstrates (if any more proof was needed) that Nautilus needs to be

[Bug 1277180] [NEW] dotted rectangles remain drawn in window after copying a bunch of files

2014-02-06 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I copyed a bunch of files from a Nautilus window into another by
Ctrl+dragging and dropping them. Both windows were set with icons
visualization, so when I (ctrl)dragged and dropped the icons, dotted
rectangles were drawn and dragged, as expected.

However, after dropping the files, which were succesfully copied, the
dotted rectangles should have disappeared, but they remained, as if
printed on the destination window. Neither by moving, nor by minimizing
and remaximizing the window, could I get rid of the spurious dotted
rectangles. Even while navigating to other folders, the dotted
rectangles stay there. Even after resizing the window. Despite the
contents of the window being redrawn and updated, the dotted rectangles
are still there, and they move around while I move around the window, as
if they were part of its contents.

The only way to have them disappear is to completely close the window.

Obviously this is not systematically reproducible. This doesn't happen
often. Don't expect to be able to reproduce it by ctrl+dragging icons
from a window to another. 99.99% of the times this won't happen.

[Bug 1264280] Re: Cannot browse file on bluetooth device. Nonsense error message

2013-12-26 Thread matteo sisti sette
After this, I noticed that the mobile device was listed on the bottom of the
left panel of Nautilus.
So I clicked it, and Nautilus crashed.

After that, I relaunched Nautilus, and now browsing the mobile device
works both from Nautilus (clicking on the device name on the left panel)
and from the Bluetooth application (following the steps in the report)

After this, when I open Nautilus, it generates a new icon in the
Launcher instead of just adding an arrow on the left of the existing
launcher icon.

There's certainly a bug in Nautilus as it crashed; I don't know if it's
_only_ nautilus or if bluetooth has an issue as well.

[Bug 1264152] [NEW] Syntax highlight: nonsense pink coloring of portions of expressions in JS

2013-12-25 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

See screenshot. This is a JS file.

-
- Couldn't GEdit just use the same language definitions that are actually used
by true languages (I guess most of them are available as open source), so that
you don't have to rewrite definitions to emulate the behavior of language
parsers? Gedit is FULL of bugs like these (see how it wrongly parses PHP within
HTML, for example), so if it could just take language definitions from true
parsers, maybe we would finally get rid of all these syntax highlight
annoyances at once. Or is that not feasible?

[Bug 1254106] Re: browse files on device does nothing

2013-12-18 Thread matteo sisti sette
Please reconsider the reassignment to Nautilus.

I don't think the bluetooth widget in the notification area has nothing
to do with Nautilus. And when I click on the device listed there, the
computer does NOT EVEN TRY TO CONNECT to the phone; I guess it would
open Nautilus after establishing a connection to the device, so if it
doesn't even try I don't think Nautilus has anything to do here.

2013-12-18 Thread matteo sisti sette
If I open BlueTooth Settings, then select the device from the list on
the left, then click on the Browse Files button, then IT WORKS.

It's definitely the notification-area widget that it's broken.

I'm going to change this to confirmed because if we wait for someone
else to test it (let alone confirm it) we're going to wait forever.

There's enough information in this report to start fixing it.

[Bug 1261148] [NEW] nautilus became unusably slow to respond. Restarting fixed the issue

2013-12-15 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I had a Nautilus window that had been open for hours and had survived
more than one suspend/resume of the computer. I used it every once in a
while, as I usually do.

Then I brought it to front to do some stuff (after maybe a few hours of not
using it) and it suddenly was unusably slow in responding to mouse interaction.
- When opening any folder (folder with little contents which usually take a
fraction of a second to open) it would take up to 10 or 15 seconds to show the
contents (during that time it would show an empty window as if the folder was
empty, with no indication whatsoever that it was loading or waiting)
- When scrolling, either with the touchpad two-fingers scroll or with the
scrollbar, it would take several seconds to render the scrolling.

I closed and relaunched Nautilus and it fixed the issue.

[Bug 1249764] [NEW] Doesn't respond to scroll (almost); restarting fixes the issue

2013-11-10 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Up to now it has happened to me only once:
- I opened a file (a .js file) in Gedit by double clicking in nautilus
- Gedit would not respond to scroll, or it would respond with HUGE slowness,
i.e. several seconds after moving the scroll bar or mouse wheel it would
actually scroll
- Closing and restarting Gedit fixed the issue (I've opened the same file and
it works fine).

The file is not especially big nor does it have especially long lines. I
think this was totally random.

[Bug 1244366] Re: no easy way to disable screensaver on 12.04 without installing additional tools

2013-10-25 Thread matteo sisti sette
I finally was able to prevent the screen to become black after inactivity by
running in a terminal:
  sudo xset s off

I have no idea what that is (just copied and pasted it from some askubuntu
answer) and it's absolutely insane that you have to write a command from a
terminal in order to prevent the screen to turn black.
The very fact there are tons of questions in forums about how to complelety
turn off screensaver in Ubuntu means there's something badly wrong with it. ALL
system settings should be found under System Settings, and screen saving
options should be easily and readily available under Power.

By the way, I notice the bug has been assigned to the package gnome-
control-center. I guess that is what shows up in dash as System
Settings, right?

[Bug 1242982] Re: Can't open in new window

2013-10-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
This is ridiculous.

If that's an upstream decision, it is a WRONG one and a bug should be filed
upstream, and watched from here.
Either that or nautilus must definitely be replaced in Ubuntu with a decent
file browser, which wouldn't be a bad idea given what it has become lately
(consider for example the removal of the familiar
consistent-with-everything-else-in-ubuntu menu, now dismembered into a number
of buttons here and there, and other usability regressions that have appeared
in the recent versions).

There's absolutely no reason why opening a folder in a new window should be any
less immediate than opening it in a new tab. It's inconsistent and nonsense.
Why opening a folder in a new window is something they don't want to
encourage is beyond me. Having folders open in separate windows allow you to
drag and drop items from a folder to another, something it's much more
cumbersome to do with only tabs in one window (it obliges you to copy, then
navigate, then paste). You can open a new window anyway, and then navigate into
the folder, so why on earth shouldn't be able to do that with a single
right-click+open-in-new-window?
Pure nonsense.

[Bug 939335] Re: Missing options to run at critical battery level as hibernate and suspend [Ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2]

2013-10-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
The hibernate option is now present, but greyed out, which I guess is
because hibernation is disabled globally, which in turn I guess is
because hibernation doesn't work in most cases (very sad that nothing
has been done to fix that yet).

The suspend option is missing completely, though it is actually the action
that is taken by default.
I wonder what happens if you change it and choose turn off. You probably
won't be able to ever set it to suspend again, which inconsistent with the
fact that it is the one configured by default. On a fresh install, in the Power
settings the current option is shown as an empty item, and it does not appear
when you unfold the dropdown (see screenshot).

By the way, suspend does not work at all with low batter, see #1239402.
Perhaps that is the reason why it has been removed as a choice? But if so, then
it shouldn't be the default one.

I can't understand how such huge issues don't get attention, when they
are the most critical ones which are making Ubuntu a terribly unstable
system which cannot be used safely.

[Bug 1236826] [NEW] Nautilus randomly fails to show thumbnails of gif files

2013-10-08 Thread matteo sisti sette

Then I pick a file whose thumbnail is not shown, I copy it into another
folder, and _there_ the thumbnail is shown.

So it's completely random, it's not something wrong with the file.

I guess something fails randomly when generating the preview.
There doesn't seem to be a way of forcing the rebuilding of thumbnails, by the
way

[Bug 1223574] [NEW] [REGRESSION] Refuses to trash a directory because it's not empty

[Bug 1213961] Re: The new search feature is a huge step backwards in usability

2013-08-21 Thread matteo sisti sette
An additional demential annoyance which is a consequence of this bug:

Steps to reproduce:

- navigate to a folder
- select some files and/or folders and copy them (ctrl+C)
- navigate to another folder
- paste (Ctrl+C)

Expected: should paste the files/folder into the new folder
Observed: pastes some random text (whatever-was-the-last-text-you-copied) into
the search box.

[Bug 1213961] [NEW] The new search feature is a huge step backwards in usability

2013-08-19 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

How it used to work till Ubuntu 12.10:
A - on the top of the window there used to be a search button. Only if you
clicked it, a search textfield would appear and you could do a file search
B - on the other hand, without performing any search, just by typing the
beginning of a file name, if a file or folder existed within the current folder
that matched the typed string, it would be SELECTED.

Ok, both features needed some improvement, and particularly B had some
glitches, but the way they have been unified now is... I'll refrain from
saying what I was going to say and I'll just say it is NOT even closely
the right solution. Actually it's much worse.

How it works now:
- on the top of the windows there is always a HUGE textfield for searching,
which occupies a lot of space, and is always focused
- when you type a string, it is typed in that searchbox, and all the contents
of the current window are FILTERED, meaning all the files or folders that don't
match are hidden.
- when you do so, the current path stops being shown on the top (this is one of
the worst parts)
- The possibility to type a partial filename and have the file/folder selected,
but without hiding the rest and without hiding the path, is gone.

While this could be a good replacement for the old search proper, it is
a dramatic step backwards in usability for those who used to use the B
thing.

Why this is a terribly bad idea:
- this is SLOW. Selecting the matching files was fast; now filtering all the
contents is much slower, and can become tremendously slow when the number of
items in the folder is big
- you stop seeing the rest of files; while this may be desired in some cases,
it may well be not, so one should be able to choose. In the old version you
could choose: if you wanted a search you did a search, if you wanted to quickly
select a file by typing its name, you wouid still see the rest of the files. We
loose one option
- you stop seeing the path on the top (until you clear the contents of the
search box, of course). That's annoying
- the always-present search textfield needlessly uses a lot of space whether or
not you're going to use it

What are the advantages:
- can't think of a single one

It is an error to try to unify two totally different fetures, i.e. SEARCHING on
one hand, and SELECTING an item by typing its name rather than clicking it, on
the other hand; they have been unified into one feature that doesn't fulfill
decently any of those two completely different needs; or perhaps one (the
search) but definitely not the other.

[Bug 1213456] [NEW] [REGRESSION 13.04] New tab item missing in Nautilus menu

[Bug 1213457] [NEW] [REGRESSION 13.04] Most of Nautilus menus are gone

2013-08-17 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I realize this is obviously by design, but there's no good reason for
such a design which is plain wrong, so it has to be reverted.

Nautilus used to have a normal menu similar to most applications: File,
Edit, View...

Now it only has a Files menu (where Files is the new shown name
for Nautilus, formerly known as Home Directory and god knows what will
be its name in the next release, consistently with Ubuntu's absurd
obsession of changing the most basic programs' names and always hide the
real name, in this case Nautilus).

Why isn't there any more, for example, an Edit menu with a Copy, Paste,
Cut, etc items?
Of course all those things can be done in other ways, but since we're going to
have a menu bar on the top of the screen anyway, it's nonsensical to remove
from it all the menus one expects to find, consistently with all applications.
Also, that was a place where one could se the keyboard shortcuts associated to
each action.

Or name one single good reason for removing the traditional application
menus.

[Bug 1211475] [NEW] Waiting animation cursor persists long after file opened via double click

2013-08-12 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- open a folder in Nautilus
- double click on a text file that will open by default in GEdit
= the cursor starts showing a waiting animation (rotating dots in a circle)

Expected behavior
= As soon as the file is opened in Gedit, the cursor waiting animation should
stop, wherever you move the cursor

Observed behavior:
= while you keep the cursor within Gedit, it is an arrow as expected, but as
soon as it move it outside gedit and/or click again on the Nautilus window, the
cursor keeps showing the waiting animation for several seconds, about 10
seconds no matter what you do. After that time, cursor goes back to normal.

This is a regression that has appeared in Ubuntu 13.04. Worked fine in
12.10

Now I realize, the bug may be in Gedit rather than Nautilus. This doesn't
happen with files opened by default by other programs.

However, if the behavior of the cursor outside the called application
(i.e. Gedit) depends on the called application, then something is badly
wrong (either in implementation or design) in either the calling
application (i.e. Nautilus) or the system (i.e. Unity).

[Bug 1174471] [NEW] random gedit crash

2013-04-29 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I was just typing, editing a file (with a few other opened in other tabs).
Suddenly Gedit started consuming a lot of cpu and after a few seconds it
crashed.

Upon restart, it didn't even give me an option to restore the unsaved
file from a backup, which is the worst thing. Doesn't gedit
automatically save a hidden backup every very few seconds as ALL decent
text editing programs do, from vim to LibreOffice?? that's unbelievable.
If it does, then it forgot to ask me whether I wanted to restore it.

I lost all the unsaved changes.

Hope this report gets the relevant files attached.

[Bug 1174028] [NEW] Nautilus won't leave the current folder until it's done computing every subfolder's size!

2013-04-28 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- open a folder
- notice as Nautilus statrs computing subfolder sizes ( is displayed
instead of the size until the size is computed)
- immediately double-click on one of the subfolders

Expected:
- Nautilus should stop computing the subfolders' size, and immediately open the
requested folder instead

Observed:
- Nautilus stupidly keeps computing the subfolder sizes, and only when all of
them are computed (and displeyed) then it will open the requested folder

So sometimes when you enter a folder it may take a while until you can
leave it, and it is not for a reason.

[Bug 1169209] [NEW] If you're quick enough, Nautilus opens a different folder than the one you double-click

2013-04-15 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

This is not systematic, so it's pretty difficult to reproduce at will,
but I have observed it at least twice.

I think this happens more probably when Nautilus is slow because it's
loading all the information for the first time (i.e. nothing is cached
yet), e.g. when you open Nautilus for the first time after boot.

- Open Nautilus
- Open a disk unit by double clicking on its icon on the left panel
= when the contents of the folder appear on the right, the folder that had
been selected last time you ran Nautilus, is selected by default
- Quickly double click on some _other_ folder

= Nautilus opens the folder that was selected by default, even though
you have double clicked another one!!!

[Bug 1133477] [NEW] cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2013-02-26 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

With Nautilus, I navigated to a folder that contained about 2,000 gif files.
I selected all of them
I cut with Ctrl+X
I navigated to another folder
I pasted with Ctrl+V

= A popup window appeared saying Preparing to move N files, and it got stuck
there forever.
Nautilus stopped responding. I waited half an hour, then I had to kill it.

Actually some of the files were moved. Which is the worst thing that
could happen.

I tried again with the remaining files and it happened again!! It's
systematic!!

I suspect it has to do with displaying the previews of a big number of
files. Nautilus becomes completely unmanageable whenever you open
folders with lots of files. Maximum priority should be given to the UI
and actual operations; displaying of the previews should be done in the
background and should never, ever slow down user operations the
slightest bit. Seems pretty obvious.

Also note that 2000 is not even that much. Actually it's very few files.

[Bug 1106317] [NEW] No way to speedup the scrolling when dragging a file into a folder

2013-01-26 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

* Open a folder with many files and a few subfolders; show files as List mode,
and order files by name. Folders will be at the top. Make sure there are enough
files so that a scroll bar will show up and the amount of scrolling is
considerable.
* scroll down until you can see the last file in the list. Now the first
subfolder is way up out of the window.
* Select the last file at the bottom and drag it up in order to drop it into
one of the subfolders

= when you reach the top of the window with the cursor (dragging the
file), the window will start scrolling up, so you will eventually be
able to drop the file into the subfolder, but

EXPECTED: if the amount of scrolling you need to do is huge (e.g. there are a
lot of files), there SHOULD be a way to speed it up at will. An option would be
to have scroll speed increase in proportion to how much you move the cursor
upwards out from the top of the window. Or it may speed up just when you are
moving the mouse and the cursor is outside the window.
Also, scrolling by means of the mouse wheel SHOULD be enabled (which would be
already a partial fix, since wheel scrolling is typically much faster)

OBSERVED: the speed of scrolling is constant, slow, and there's nothing you can
do to speed it up. (this speed is ok when you need to scroll just a little bit,
so it's NOT just a matter of increasing it).
And mouse wheel scrolling is disabled while you're dragging the file. (I know,
this is pretty common: most program won't let you scroll while you're dragging
somoething, but in most cases there's no good reason not to allow it, so it's a
common but wrong behavior)

[Bug 1068587] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't allow you to enter the sudo password and perform as root actions for which you don't have permissions

2012-10-19 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

- In Nautilus, Navigate to a folder that contains some file of which you are
not the owner and for which you don't have write permissions
- either Select such a file and hit the delete key
- OR right click on it and select move to trash

Expected behavior: a prompt should appear warning that you don't have
enough privileges and allowing you to ENTER YOUR PASSWORD and perform
the action in a sudo.

Observed behavior: the action obviously fails because of denied access,
you get an error but no option at all to enter the password and confirm
you want to do that as root.

The same applies to navigating into directories for which you don't have read
(or is it execute?) permissions. Instead of just denying you to view their
contents, it sould prompt you for the sudo password, or allow you to do so, for
example by providing an entry in the right-click dropdown menu that would be
something like open as root, or whatever (maybe with some special icon next
to it) that would prompt you for the password.

[Bug 1067520] [NEW] takes ages to show contents of some folders with very few files

2012-10-16 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

There are a few particular folders in my filesystem which don't have
anything special (that I know of) and that do _not_ contain many files
or subfolder (just a dozen items), which at random times take several
seconds to show up when I open them in Nautilus.

Most of the times it happens when it's the first time I open that folder
(since boot) or when a long time has passed since the last time I opened
that folder. After that, if I exit and reenter the folder it opens fast.

[Bug 1066531] [NEW] after ctrl+F the content of the search box is not selected

2012-10-14 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a file with some text.
2. Hit Ctrl+F
3. Write foo in the search box
4. Browse the search results (either with the arrow buttons or with Ctrl+G
5. Go on editing and forget about searching
6. Hit Ctrl+F again
7. Type bar

Expected: When you hit Ctrl+F the contents of the search box should be
selected, so when you type the new word bar, the formerly written word
foo should be replaced and you should be searching for bar.

Observed: About 50% of the times the expected behavior is observed.
Other times, apparently RANDOMLY, the search box is focused when you

[Bug 1063282] [NEW] Nautilus goes berserk when broswing folders with many files

2012-10-07 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

I have a folder that contains about 40,000 small images. When I open
this folder in Nautilus, it starts exhibiting the following absurd
behaviors:

1. It takes ages to show the list of files (even in list mode). Ages
means several minutes, while getting the complete list in a terminal
with ls -la takes about a second. Showing image previews is the only
thing that it is reasonable to expect that takes a long time, but they
are not needed to show the file list, and actually they are loaded later
in a threaded manner, so there's no reason why showing the file list
should take that long. 40,000 files is not much.

2. The file name column becomes huge (exceeding by far the windows
width, so a horizontal scroll bar appears), and there's no reason for
it, since none of the files has a very long name. You have to manually
shrink the name column to see the other columns. Every single time you
open this folder.

3. When the file list is already visible and Nautilus has become
responsive again (you can easily scroll down/up, select files etc) while
it is still loading image previews, if you *navigate away* from the
folder (e.g. by clicking on the name of the containing folder on the top
of the window), it takes ages to go out, as it took to get in. And much
worse, while Nautilus is thinking, it becomes completely unresposive
and the window greys out. That you have to wait a little when you
navigate _into_ a folder that has many files makes sense (though it's
not even closely as efficient as it could), but that it takes long to go
_out_ is absurd. There's nothing to process, just forget what you were
doing and show me the containing folder (which does not have many files
at all). Any memory deallocation or whatever, should be done in the
background.

[Bug 1054770] [NEW] Full disk shows 0bytes used (and free) in properties

2012-09-22 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Usually in Nautilus if you right-click on a disk or filesystem and
select properties, a circular pie chart is shown indicating used space
in yellow and free space in blue, and next to it the used and free
spaces in bytes/kB/MB/GB are shown. Total capacity is also shown.

When the disk gets conpletely full, the properties wrongly show:
- 0 bytes used
- 0 bytes free

If I remember correctly (now I already freed up some space) the pie
chart is not shown at all, nor is the total capacity.

[Bug 1016577] [NEW] search is done on the left column rather than the folder contents

2012-06-22 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a Nautilus window
2. On the left column, click on a disk on the top-left, under Devices. The
contents of the disk are shown on the right
3. Start typing

Expected: search should be done in the contents of the directory, on the right
Observed: search is done within the left column.

Additionally:
4. Click inside the window on the right, where the contents are being
displayed, but click on the empty part, not on a particular item
5. Start typing
- Expected: at least NOW, the contents should be searched
- Observed: search is STILL done within the left column, until you click some
file.

Searching the left column is mostly useless and I wonder whether one may
_ever_ want to search the left column; however, it's just one more
possibility, so why not.

However, when you have clicked on a disk unit and the contents have been
displayed, focus, or whatever determines the default place where search will
occur when typing, should definitely be on the contents on the right by
default.
Also, clicking within one of the two areas should be enough to switch on which
one search will be done, it should not be necessary to select a particular item
so change focus.

[Bug 1012622] [NEW] double clicking a file in nautilus plays that file and other previously played files

2012-06-13 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

When I double click on a sound file (e.g. mp3 or wav) in Nautilus it is
opened and played in Rhythmbox.

Sometimes, after the file is finished, other files that I had opened
recently (even if it was days ago and I had already rebooted more than
once in the meantime) are played.

Looking into it, I see that a playlist of recently played files is
automatically created and maintained (it is not the play queue though,
it's called music). While I hate that, it would in itself be fine if
when you open a new file it was always put at the END of that playlist.
The problem is that the file is placed at an arbitrary position in the
playlist, so when it is done playing, the playlist goes on with the next
file.

[Bug 1004691] [NEW] properties window blocks main window forever while size of content folders are computed

2012-05-25 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

- Open Nautilus
- Navigate to a folder containing at least a subfolder F with thousands of
items totalling many gigabytes of contents
- Right-click on F and select Properties
= You'll see the contents value that grows and grows

Now keep the Properties window open, and in the main window where you
were browsing, browse away from that folder and try to go into another
one

Expected: you should be able to do so, while the size of contents still
keeps being computed in the Properties window

Observed: the main window hangs and keep waiting forever and never shows
you the folder you're trying to browse, until the Properties are done
computing the size.

The workaround is to open a new tab or window, but this shouldn't be necessary.
Or if it is, then the window that is not going to respond should be greyed out
so you know you have to open a new tab.

[Bug 878198] Re: Difficult to grab window borders in unity-2d

2012-05-17 Thread matteo sisti sette
The bug is definitely in metacity, not in the theme. The grabbable
border should be thick REGARDLESS of whether the visible border is thick
or not. Visible border should be set according to aesthetic/design
criteria, while width of grabbable border should be according to
usability criteria and should not affect the appearence in any way.

Btw this WAS fixed some version ago (I can't remember if it was in Lucid
or earlier): I used to have 1px visible border with a much thicker
grabbable invisible border. At some point it got broken, This is a
regression.

I remember I read somewhere that the fix was disabled temporarily for
some reason, like it interfered with some other bug or had some side
effect. I can't find where I read this.

I'm astonished to see it's not fixed in Precise. How long does it take?
How can the imortance be still undecided? This is critical.

[Bug 990528] Re: no clue is given of whether computing total size of folder is done

2012-04-30 Thread matteo sisti sette
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 386233 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386233

Are you sure this is a dup? #386233 seems to deal with the cases where
some property actually changes while they are been displayed. Here I'm
talking about when you open a folder's properties dialog and the size is
computed for the first time, and you don't even know when it's done
computing it.

Also this is definitely more than whishlist. It gives incomplete or
plain wrong information (since you don't know how long you have to stare
at it before the size is correct, at any time you are encouraged to
assume what you see is the total size of the contents of the folder)

[Bug 990524] [NEW] Folder properties doesn't show exact size in bytes, only approximate size in kB/MB/GB

2012-04-28 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

When you right-click on a file and select properties, both the
appriximate size in KB, MB or GB _AND_ the exact size in bytes are
shown.

The same should happen when you right-click on a folder and select
properties (and the size of its contents are computerd). Instead, only
the approximate size is shown in this case.

[Bug 990528] [NEW] no clue is given of whether computing total size of folder is done

2012-04-28 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

- right click on a folder with a lot of gigabytes of contents
- select Properties
- look at the total size

The size shown increases while it is computed, until it finally stops
increasing.

No clue is given whether it is done computing or not.

Wnen it stops increasing for a few seconds for whatever reason, you
wonder whether it has reached the total or not, and you have no way to
know except wait a few seconds more, and if it still doesn't grow, you
can guess it's done.

A waiting animated icon or progress bar or computing... message should
be shown temporarily while the size is being computed, and disappear
when it's done.

[Bug 989555] Re: .inc files are opened in browser by default

2012-04-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
Well the bug is still valid: if the file contains html AND PHP, it
should open it with the text editor as it does with .php files. Opening
it in the browser is not the correct thing at all. It would be
acceptable if it contains _only_ html (though with a .inc extension I
would deem more reasonable opening it in gedit even in the case of only
html content).

[Bug 989555] [NEW] .inc files are opened in browser by default

2012-04-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

If you double click a file with extension .inc, by default it will open in
the browser.
Default should be the text editor, (unless there is some more suitable
application, but certainly not the browser)

I know this is only a default value and you can configure file
associations, but default values for everything should always be at
least arguably reasonable values, not absurd nonsense.

[Bug 989555] Re: .inc files are opened in browser by default

2012-04-27 Thread matteo sisti sette
Oh, I see, it depends on the contents of the file.

If the file contains html code (even if it contains also php code as in
my case), it opens in the browser.

This is the kind of features a-la-Microsoft, where the software tries
to be smart and the result is you can't rely on it.

I attach the file. If I rename it with .php extension it opens it gedit
(as expected).

[Bug 987178] [NEW] shows loading and waiting icon forever after access denied to remote samba folder

2012-04-23 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

- open nautilus
- browse to a remote samba folder
- try to open a subfolder to which you don't have access

Observed behavior
-You get the error message: The folder contents could not be displayed. You do
not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'XXX'
- The folder is apparently opened (meaning its name is shown on the top of the
window or tab and you see an empty folder),
- the cursor shows the waiting animation forever, and on the bottom-right
corner you see loading forever, until you click on the X to cancel the
loading

Expected behavior:
- you should get the error message 'You do not have the permissions necessary
to view the contents of XXX'
- you should keep seing the containing folder, there's no point in faking the
opening of the folder if you're not going to be able to see its contents, ever
- as soon as the dialog with the error message appears, the loading/waiting
animations should stop (or never start in the first place). There's no point to
keep waiting forever something that will never happen under any circumstances,
and to force the user to explicitely cancel an operation that has already failed

After rebooting (again), video and audio codec information is shown in

[Bug 923038] Re: no audio/video info in Properties for mov files

2012-04-09 Thread matteo sisti sette
Please remove the duplicate status

I have already applied the workaround for bug 856988 and I do can play
mov files with totem now, so that bug is not affecting me any more. At
first, that also fixed the no-properties issue (after rebooting).

But now, again I can't see any information about video and audio in
File Properties for video files.

Totem _does_ play mov files; Nautilus does _not_ display video and audio
properties.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 856988

[Bug 968451] [NEW] write operations on readonly folders fail SILENTLY when done via keyboard shortcuts

2012-03-29 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

Example 1
Browse to a folder in a read/write filesystem, select some file or folder and
hit Ctrl+C
Then browse to a folder in a read-only filesystem, and hit Ctrl+V (paste)

Expected: exactly the same should happen as when you drag an item from a
folder to the other: an error message informing you that the operation
failed, with a details dropdown which you can expand and see it was
because the target folder is read-only

Observed: nothing happens at all. Not even the error sound is played.

Example 2
Go to a read-only filesystem, select a file or folder and hit Ctrl+X (cut). If
it was a read/write filesystem the selected item would become grey. Since it is
readonly it can't, but:

Expected: an error message should pop up or at the very least, the error
sound should be played

observed: nothing happens at all

[Bug 959743] [NEW] some image thumbnails are shown with a black border, some are not

2012-03-19 Thread matteo sisti sette
Public bug reported:

See the screenshot. Some image thumbnails are shown with a border, some
are not.

I guess having or not having a frame is a matter of tastes, I can't tell
which is better, but there's no reason why some images should have a
frame and some should not.

Note that some of the tiff images in the screenshot have a border, some
don't, so it's not the image format. Also, all the tiffs shown have an
alpha channel and all of them have a transparent background, but still
some of them have a border and some don't.

I've seen a few bugs reports about thumbnails having or not having a
frame, but they either don't mention the coexistence of images with and
withoit frame or are marked as fixed.
