[Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2009-02-16 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04?
Thanks in advance.

I installed the RC on a D630 this morning. It has the 135 Nvidia and
1440x900 display. It worked seamlessly and without incident. The install
process and post-install exhibited no failures. Impressive so far.

[Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-04-09 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I believe this bug is fixed.

I just tried a daily livecd build from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/ (specifically http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current
/hardy-desktop-amd64.iso dated April 9 8:34AM) and my laptop comes right
up in its native resolution with no operator intervention at all. I
haven't done an install yet, it was enough to see the splash screen and
get to the desktop at 1440x900.

Please try a daily livecd build and see what it does for you.

[Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-04-05 Thread Daniel Ellis
This is how I managed to get Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64 Beta 1 installed on my
Dell Latitude D630.

Boot live CD, selected UK, Pressed F3 to select keyboard layout, selected UK.
Pressed F6 to specify boot options, added 'vga=769' (without the quotes) to the
end of the line and pressed enter.

It then booted perfectly into the live CD. I was then able to perform
an install normally.

However, after the install completed, it rebooted into a black screen.
So I rebooted again (ctrl-alt-del) and selected recovery mode (the
second item in the grub boot menu). When it had booted into the
recovery menu I selected 'xfix' from the list. When that had completed
I selected 'resume boot' and was able to login.

I then enabled the proprietary nvidia drivers and rebooted. Everything
has been fine since.

any ideas how to do that?

I would suggest that the importance be raised and the bug be opened in
Xorg or the relevant driver. This basically stops people in their tracks
from using the AMD64 CD on MacBook Pro, unless you know how to switch VT
and force GDM to reload.

Re: [Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-04-04 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
The beta was set before the fix to the usplash was done, and I believe
the usplash bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147623) interfered
with the autodetect.

If there were a simple way to update the packages on the beta livecd
then I'd test this hypothesis, but apparently livecd's are built using
Gentoo. So I'll wait for the developers to release rc1.

The work around is to do the install in safe graphics mode. Then
after booting into the newly installed system and updating to most
recent packages you should get a prompt from System Hardware Drivers
saying that there's a restricted driver for your hardware. Enable the
nvidia driver and you should be all set.

Doing an install in low graphics used to be impossible, but the
installer has been made to use windows that fit on a lowres screen.

  1. The auto detection of the graphics card and LCD is failing, in this case
the laptop has a nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 135M
  2. The live cd is not handling the low graphics dialog properly.

So I would guess that the graphics detection problem is due to the AMD64

2008-02-22 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
I'm sorry, perhaps the point of my report got lost in the details.

The Hardy Alpha4 amd64 livecd fails to boot to the desktop and dumps the
user into limbo.

I expected the livecd to boot to the desktop or explain why it wasn't
possible.

In what sense is this not a bug?

I have no support question, I explain in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/147623/comments/76
the contortions required to successfully boot Alpha4 on this hardware.

The ticket has been closed because your description is rather confusing
and seems to describe different issues you had and workarounds rather a
specific bug on the software. The revelant part there is that gdm is not
restarted after using the xorg low graphic mode configuration tool
right? Does that happen using the CD only or only after installation?

Re: [Bug 194187] Re: livecd gdm failure after low-graphics dialog

2008-02-22 Thread Roger E Critchlow Jr
It happens using the CD reliably.

(I suspect the same thing has happened after install, because I have been
put into the low-graphics dialog since installing. But I don't have a way
to reproducibly get to the low graphic mode configuration tool after
install.)

I've just finished verifying the exact same issue using the amd64 desktop
CDs for Gutsy, Hardy Alpha3, and Hardy Alpha4 and captured /var/log onto a
thumb drive for each of them.

In each case:

I took the default boot path, Start or install ubuntu.
   No splash was displayed.
X started in low resolution presenting the Ubuntu is running in
low-graphics mode.
I configured to use the nv driver and the 1440x900 display.
   I tested the configuration successfully
I then clicked the [OK] button on the config dialog.

The result was to drop me into a VT with the boot progress text displayed.
The last boot progress message displayed was:
---
* Running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]
---
At this point, the boot has aborted and I switched to VT1 and tar'ed
/var/log onto a thumb drive.

The last entries in /var/log/daemon.log from the Gutsy boot are:
---
Feb 22 17:50:10 ubuntu gdm[8683]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal
X error - Restarting :0
Feb 22 17:50:14 ubuntu gdm[8829]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal

assertion `value-type == GDM_CONFIG_VALUE_BOOL' failed
Feb 22 17:53:08 ubuntu gdm[8979]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting!
---
The last entries in from the Hardy Alpha4 boot are:
---
Feb 22 18:32:31 ubuntu gdm[8563]: CRITICAL: gdm_config_value_get_bool:
assertion `value-type == GDM_CONFIG_VALUE_BOOL' failed
Feb 22 18:33:38 ubuntu gdm[8846]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting!
---
The end of /var/log/gdm/:0.log from the Hardy Alpha4 boot is:
---
configure
 * Stopping GNOME Display Manager... [ OK ]
 * Starting GNOME Display Manager... [fail]

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
---

It turns out that sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart is sufficient to fix things
at this point, the desktop comes up with the driver and resolution I
configured.

I can supply logs, or we can wait and see what Hardy Alpha5 produces.
