After updating to the latest stable Alsa, nothing changed
After updating to the latest Also snapshot, a new input on my sound card was
detected (Internal Mic), but PulseAudio didn't captured any sounds.
After killing PulseAudio and reloading Alsa, I could using the microphone again.

I also got this problem (internal mic doesn't work) with my soundcard.
As I do not have an external mic, I don't know if that works.

I finally did get the microphone to work in my Asus A8F by installing
the current development snapshot of alsa (post 1.0.18a thing - the
current stable 1.0.18a version did not do the trick).
To install the current (2008-01-08) snapshot I used a script posted in
this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org
Same (perhaps) problem on Asus A8F with the same Analog Devices AD1986A
chip. when run with the current kernel (Ubuntu 8.10, kernel
2.6.27-9-generic) there is no external mic option in kmix or alsamixer
although there is one when run with an older kernel (2.6.24-21-generic).
