Do you mean: NVidia does not deliver open source drivers for my MD96630 notebook, so one can't work with Ubuntu/Linux etc. ? And is it the same story for the rest of the total hardware in this machine? Soundcard which don't work? Wlan which don't work? Tuning impossible for i.e LCD monitor,integrated Webcam, integrated microphone? If that's so, than Linux-Ubuntu etc. is no longer in the picture for me to serve as a alternative operationsystem for M.s. Windows-Vista for this notebook, nor for a lot kinds of notebooks and desktops which all work fine under Windows! Than Linux-Ubuntu can really forget it to be a easy HUMAN alternative for the near future. Arie - The NVIDIA driver is proprietary and closed source. This means that only NVIDIA can fix bugs with their driver. Ubuntu cannot fix problems with the NVIDIA driver, and this is exactly the same situation on Windows too. Whilst there is an open-source alternative (nouveau) developed independently of NVIDIA, the support from this driver is low and development lags behind the official NVIDIA driver because they refuse to release specifications for their chipsets, making it very difficult for anyone else to develop drivers. If you don't like this, then go and complain to NVIDIA. There is nothing that anyone else can do, and this applies in the Windows world too. I can't speak for the other hardware in your machine, because I don't know what it is. Dear Chris, Thanks for your response! I guess NVidia and that kind of manufactrs will not be very impressed of my opinion about their protectionism! That's what you and I and thousands of people don't like.And that's why Linux-Ubuntu can't break through, I guess. But I can tell you, that, also without the right drivers until now, Ubuntu 8.10 is superior in speed and simplicity to all kinds of Linux-distro's and Windows versions which I experienced over the last 20 years! If the right drivers are there, than, I'm convinced of that, M.soft is OUT! And they know that for sure! But for now I cannot promote Ubuntu to people who only know a little bit more than how to turn a computer on and off, if you feel what I mean. It would be nice if you lived at my dutch region so that we could talk a lot over the architeture, the ins and outs of a Linux system, in which I'm very interested, because I hate reading a lot of general stuff which is not direct to the points. Hello, Just open a video MP4 file with totem. Choose Preferences for videoviewing. Make some changes for brightness, colour, contrast and after that you only can close the window without saving the changes. So, as long as your linux session lasts, the changes will stay in Totem, but as soon as you shut down Linux and reboot it, the changes you made in the preference tab are gone so that you have to make these changes again and again and again after each reboot, and that is not realy nice.
