Previously the 'Places' button would always appear to the right of
"Activities"
However since a few weeks ago, every now and then the "Places" button

Wayland doesn't work at all, hangs for 5+ minutes after login in VMware

It appears that extension comes from the 'gnome-shell-extensions' source
package. So the correct locations to report bugs for it are where you

Worth noting however that Ubuntu 19.10 is
Now...maybe this is jumping the gun a little. But after disabling
desktop icons I just spent a bunch of time on mnemosyne (which was
triggering this)...and it didn't trigger. Maybe I lucked out and just
didn't trigger it...but it's awfully suspicious that it didn't trigger.

This is a false alarm, at least partly. If username is defined like
sftp://u...@some.server.org, everything works OK. It is likely that in
the live USB test case the server I use checks username from LDAP. As I
did not specify user name and the default "ubuntu" was used, connection

Whenever a application is left opened in the background for a while and
is not minimized, and I minimize

If the mouse cursor still moves then that means Xorg is still running
and it was gnome-shell frozen. But we need to find out if it was just
frozen or the result of a crash. Please use this command:
pidof gnome-shell
to check the process ID before and after the freeze and tell us if it
changes.
Please open the 'Extensions' app (gnome-shell-extension-prefs) and check
that you only have the 3 default Ubuntu extensions active, at most. If
you have any others then please disable them, restart and retest.
