[Bug 1769695] Re: Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

2018-05-11 Thread David Georg Reichelt
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic

** Description changed:

I am using a fresh installed Ubuntu 18.04 on an RX 480 and an i5 7600.
3.28.0-0ubuntu1 is running. Normaly, everything runs fine, but lately
when I had some windows open (eclipse, Texmaker, Terminal, Firefox with
Youtube and other windows) the system suddenly was nearly frozen, I
could move the mouse and change active windows by ctrl+tab but not use
the keyboard e.g. for typing into windows or make any actions with the
mouse (e.g. open menues, click on menues, ..).

When I changed the session by Ctrl+Alt+F3 and then killed firefox,
everything worked again. I do not know whether this is a Firefox, a gdm
or a graphics driver issue. Since a program should not be able to make
the desktop crash at all, I suppose its not Firefox and so I post it
  here.

/var/log/syslog around the time contains the following (even if it
contains some device removed code, I did not do anything with the cables
and am sure that there isn't a hardware defect with mouse and keyboard):

[Bug 1769695] Re: Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

2018-05-11 Thread David Georg Reichelt
I collected the information.

The bug does not appear on a certain behaviour, but from time to time.
Since this is my working computer (and I expect a LTS release to be
usable for a working computer ;) ), unfortunately I can not keep eclipse
/ Java applications closed for some time.

I am not using network filesystem mounts, but an ecryptfs-home directory
and an luks / btrfs data mount, resulting in the following mount-output:

/home/.ecryptfs/reichelt/.Private on /home/reichelt type ecryptfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,ecryptfs_fnek_sig=acac39a53194aaed,ecryptfs_sig=bc053eeba3eaac08,ecryptfs_cipher=aes,ecryptfs_key_bytes=16,ecryptfs_unlink_sigs)
gvfsd-fuse on /run/user/1000/gvfs type fuse.gvfsd-fuse
(rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=1000)
/dev/mapper/komp on /home/reichelt/daten type btrfs
(rw,relatime,compress=lzo,space_cache,subvolid=5,subvol=/)

[Bug 1769695] Re: Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like Java is causing a lot of log messages, but that might not be
related to the freeze.

Please start by keeping Eclipse and any other Java apps closed for a
while. You should be able to keep native apps like Firefox and Terminal
open.

[Bug 1769695] Re: Freeze of Surface for 2 Minutes

2018-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also these two messages suggest pauses at a low level that could block
other things:

May 7 17:27:40 reichelt-desktop nautilus[3278]: Called "net usershare
info" but it failed: Kindprozess »net« konnte nicht ausgeführt werden
(No such file or directory)

May 9 17:41:25 reichelt-desktop kernel: [ 1033.469201] perf: interrupt
took too long (2501 > 2500), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate
to 79750

The second one in particular suggests the kernel is getting stuck. Maybe
keep an eye on the kernel log (dmesg -w) for more information.

Also try avoiding network filesystems/mounts for a while (in case you're
using those). Any problem in the network while doing so could cause such
pauses. Although admittedly a properly designed UI should ignore such
issues, I don't think gnome-shell is there yet.

2018-05-09 Thread David Georg Reichelt
It seems like this happened again, but now syslog just contains:

May 9 17:41:17 reichelt-desktop thunderbird.desktop[3186]: [calBackendLoader]

May 9 17:41:24 reichelt-desktop gnome-shell[1833]: Some code accessed the

defined with 'let' or 'const' inside the module. This was previously supported,
but is not correct according to the ES6 standard. Any symbols to be exported
from a module must be defined with 'var'. The property access will work as
previously for the time being, but please fix your code anyway.
