The only way I can get out of this bug, when it bites, is to exit my X
(and presumably dbus) session and log back in. Really annoying. evince
prints all sorts of useless console clutter, but fails to print any
useful diagnostics in this case.

AFAIK, there is no keyboard shortcut available to seek forward/backward
in the current track (by 10mn/1mn/10s increments for example like in
mplayer). The mouse control is just not precise enough.

@johnlea - no its a complete hack to make gnome-screensaver looks like
U-G. So there are no indicators, and the '' button is the equivalent
of selecting switch user in a session, i.e. it switches you to the
actual unity-greeter. It's a plan B option as we can't do the proper
switching reliably.
