synclient -l | grep -i TouchpadOff
from treminal, and if it returned:
TouchpadOff = 1
then your touchpad is disabled, just enable it by running:
synclient TouchpadOff=0

I think I found fix for my case. Ubuntu x64 freezes completely, intel i5.
I've noticed that when system freezes, chrome is always on.
